Ubar by Amouage 1995

Hiya Perfumed Peeps,

Today I sit swathed in the glory of Ubar. I jumped onto a split with the fabulous Ruth K of FFF, thanks mate. Coming from last century it feels like ancient niche to me.

Ubar by Amouage 1995

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Tangerine, orange, litsea cubeba and violet leaf
Heart: Jasmine, orange blossom, ylang-ylang, tuberose, freesia, lily-of-the-valley and palisander rosewood
Base: Sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli, vetiver, copahu balm and black amber

It is so thick and dense and lavish, reminiscent of fragrances of old and full of animal and human depths. Ubar smells like I remember perfume smelling when I was a kid. Rich, intense and glorious. The first 2 hours are big and wonderfully powerful on me and then it calms to a stealthy purr that comes upon me unexpected and gives me a little waft of wow every time. I’ve been out and about in Ubar doing return from holidays chores: bank, hair, car, bills, and it has stayed with me all morning. There is a story but its a not a tale of surprises and jolts, more a blossoming and then a fade. I lose track of Ubar at the 6-7 hour mark, fine longevity and I’m sure there is still some fragrance there but I can’t smell it. I wonder how long this decant will last, I’m guessing not long.

Ubar is one of my absolute perfume loves without which I do not want to be ever! Every time I wear it I think how beautiful it is and how happy I am that I found it.

I’m glad you like it as well 🙂

I’ve been meaning to comment ever since the post ticked into my email, but yes and thank you, Portia, because I’m one of those who think that Ubar really IS…all that. At the time I found Ubar, I had almost given up on perfume, thinking that somehow along the way, opulence, mystique and fragrant storytelling had been lost forever. I had read about it on several blogs – it was reorchestrated in 2007/2008 – and something stuck in my mind when I read those reviews. As if an epiphany were just waiting to happen. First thought at first sniff: Thank you, God! 😉 Grand, plush, complex, incredibly luxe. I was blown away…It was my very first Amouage (if nowhere near my last, alas), but for me, Ubar will always be incredibly special – for one, since it was the very first ‘perfume story’ I ever wrote. That made it possible to say things and convey aspects of perfume that couldn’t be done in any other way – and that, dear Portia, is inspiration (or aspiration? 😉 ) at its finest! xo

Great images for this! Ubar was not one that really grabbed me, but I feel I need more time with many of the Amouages, because I tend not to like them at first and then grow to like them more (with a few exceptions!).
