CHANEL No 19: Vintage EdC by Henri Robert 1970

Hello Vintage Lovers,

One of the things that often surprises me is that on Etsy and eBay sometimes you can still find amazing bargains. Recently I was lucky enough to find a 3/4 full 45ml CHANEL 19 EdC, the spritz in thesilver satin finish case with gold waist and CHANEL C’s on top. It’s a beautiful case in its own right before I even get to the juice, so reminiscent of times past and when owning some CHANEL mass market fragrance was to feel rich and pampered.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Neroli, bergamot, green notes
Heart: Iris, narcissus, rose, lily of the valley
Base: Sandalwood, leather, vetiver, oakmoss

BaseNotes gives these featured accords:
Top: Galbanum, Bergamot, Neroli, Hyacinth
Heart: Rose, Orris, Jasmine, Narcissus, Muguet, Ylang-Ylang
Base: Musk, Sandal, Oakmoss, Leather, Cedarwood

WHOA BABY!! I love the snappy green opening, so fresh and buoyant, all sparkly green galbanum and citrus. There is a wet feel to CHANEL 19 opening, like there is dew on the world that you’re smelling, or maybe those lovely flowers have been washed before becoming a bouquet. As the bouquet takes over, slowly it eclipses the citrus but the green freshness stays right into the heart. So many people use CHANEL 19 as their back straightener fragrance, and I understand why they feel like that. It certainly has a very stiff upper lipness about it to begin that reflect the cool and aloof that we all sometimes strive for.

Though the opening is magic and the heart softly beautiful it is the base of 19 that I love the most, sadly it doesn’t last long enough on my skin but I do get a couple of hours with the lovely warm, sexy, sensual floral woods that still maintain a very discreet nod to the green open, like the job is done and the hair has been let down. CHANEL 19 becomes less restrained, more open and engaging, like SJP as Meredith Morton in The Family Stone as she unwinds in the bar with her fiances brother. Often when I wear CHANEL 19 I catch myself smiling in remembrance of the film and its now associated fall from uptight. It was never an Oscar winner but it’s one of my favourite go-to films, here’s a peek.

Hi, Portia! I’m so jealous of your find (in fact, the shade of the current Chanel No 19 green with envy!).

It was another perfume that I bought with my student grant when it first came out – I was intrigued by its adverts showing a girl in a man’s suit striding into a men’s club and shaking her long blonde hair as it tumbled to her shoulders when she threw her hat off. I felt damned good wearing it (and rather grown-up and confident), although its first blast of notes always reminded me of a tasty gin and tonic – I don’t know why!

He He he! Yes even the colour os 19 has become super green, my vintage is a very pale green but more beige really.
I didn’t get to see those ads sadly but you have me about to go hunting.

If there was more vintage No.19 to be found, this would be the closest thing to a signature scent for me. I would wear it almost every day if I weren’t so afraid of running out of it. So I save for those days when I need to feel strong, like I’m wearing a suit of armor. Love, love, love No.19. Then again, I am rather a Chanel girl. At least when it comes to scent.

Yes, there is a problem of world lack. I have quite a stockpile though, it would be a terrible shame to run dry.

Of course I’m a #19 girl – I’m British damnit! We have the monopoly on stiff upper lips 🙂 I found a teenie weenie bottle at an estate sale a while back and have had to be satisfied with waving it under my nose mostly and wearing it occasionally as I’m a bit of a hoarder and dread using it up…

oh thanks to the link to the etsy store- I love etsy but haven’t found vintage perfume there- so thank you!

I have a bit of vintage edt- it is a very lovely perfume but I rarely wear it. It is one of those perfumes whose greatness I can recognize but which I don’t enjoy wearing often..The last time I wore it, I felt sad for some reason..weird!

WOW! It is a melancholy kind of scent if you take it that way. You’re welcome for the Odona link, they are excellent,

I haven’t tried No. 19, and I’ve never thought about wearing a perfume to lend one a particular attribute, rather than just a general confidence that one smells good. I’ll have to try both. And The Family Stone was a fun movie, it really captured the uncomfortableness of staying with a significant other’s family for the first time.

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

      Hi there Laurels,
There are so many great ways to wear perfume, armor, strength, seduction, sweet simplicity and a trillion others too. It’s really fun to explore that aspect of perfumery if you haven’t already.
      The Family Stone, great movie.

I love No. 19, and love vintage No. 19. Although I wear it for many occasions, it’s my go-to fragrance for big days at the office.

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

Yes, those big days at the office would need something like it. I can’t imagine that life.

I also love “The Family Stone”, so underrated, but such a good movie, I would watch it in every season expecially autumn and winter.

Ah, now I must search for a vintage CHANEL No 19! Thank you for the beautiful review and the awesome movie!
