Hello APJ,

We all know that perfume evokes memories, changes moods and perspectives, makes us feel beautiful and desirable, serves the purposes of seduction, warms our winters, cools our summers and transports us to lands near and far away. Some fragrances also seem to increase our self-confidence and amplify our power. I wear my “power scents” for the same reasons that some people wear their “power suits”. I have an “armory” (so to speak) of bottles that provide much needed support (power shots) for a variety of occasions and purposes. Today’s review is not about one of those but about a new fragrance, Dom by Catamara Rosarium. Here is a description abstracted and condensed from the Rosarium Blends website:

“Dom – A charm for establishing your sexual dominion. -To lure that which you desire the most. Wear to invoke and manifest your deepest, darkest desires in the flesh. This perfume is for domination in all manner of ways and can be worked with lots of different intentions: [To dominate] a problem in your life, perhaps to dominate your boss, or a coworker, maybe to dominate a spirit… The perfume can also be used to repair damage…giving renewed confidence. The perfume itself is the base for many forms of magic… The only limitations are the ones we create ourselves.”

Rosarium Blends lists these featured accords in one line:
Vanilla, Smokey Vetiver, Neroli, Lemon, Patchouli, Myrrh, Mugwort, Black Storax

As far as I am concerned domination (whatever that means) is only a very small part of personal power. Nevertheless, I find it intriguing that any scent can have these magical effects. This summer I received a small sample of Dom and subsequently purchased a 9.8 ml bottle, which is fast disappearing.

My first impression of Dom is that of smoke, vetiver and vanilla laced with citrus blossoms and mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). This mugwort is not at all dry. The vanilla, the sweet black storax (styrax) and the rich, earthy, slightly damp and spicy myrrh amplify the natural resinous qualities of the mugwort (AKA European artemisia). As the fragrance develops it becomes an almost gourmand confection of vanilla, lemon and artemisia (a gothic lemon bar!). After two or three hours this strange, dark treat dries down and finishes with more vanilla and incense. Dom is actually quite tenacious for a natural perfume. Even after 24 hours a little bit still lingers on my skin. Also, the sillage changes with body temperature. The hotter I am the more this fragrance projects, even after several hours of wear.

I love wearing Dom but I can’t really say that it fills me with a sense of power. I do find that people are drawn to me when I wear it and that problems and misunderstandings just seem to melt away or are resolved with gracious good humor. The single issue I have with this perfume is that whenever I wear it I tend to lose focus. I find that I am drawn to myself, fixated on the scent, continually sniffing my wrists, completely under the spell of the smell.

Rosarium Blends has $15/4ml spray or $30/9.8ml splash

  1. My fallback perfume is good old Chanel No 5, but if I need to smell like a designer millionaire at an exotic resort, Acqua di Parma’s Colonia Intensa Oud is pretty, well, intense! It’s made to be noticed. I follow by email. 🙂

    • Jaybee,
Thanks to a generous friend I have a little decant of the Intensa Oud and it really is powerful stuff. Do you find that use it often?

      • Hi Azar! No, just because it is that powerful and I fear I’d skunk people too much. However, if I head up north where it’s tropical for a holiday, I might use it more often. xx

    • Hi Chris,
Vintage Opium is in my closet of power perfumes too! The older formulations have a lot more punch than the newer ones and seem to last forever. Merry Xmas to you and thank you for joining the draw.

  2. My sense of power would be enhanced by wearing a perfume that no one else can recognise. I wore Amouage Tribute last night and even intimidated myself!
    I follow by email.

    • Hi Jackie b,
I have a few perfumes that no one knows about. I especially like one that was a trial created by an indie perfumer and sent to me as a comp. I understand that this has been reformulated and will be released early next year. And… I must say that I am also intimidated Amouage Tribute, especially by the price!

Thanks for the generous Christmas draw!Happy Holidays!

      • So far, the Artemisia is missing from my blog. Or at least I didn’t pay it the attention it deserves. Moreover, I am looking for my Artemisia Holy Grail perfume, and still haven’t found it…
I know Tresor Prejs is known the love of Aromatics Elixir, but I am AE devotee, too. I can wear it in swelter, indeed. Or as an insomnia soother (though not a sleeping pill).
My Christmas will be salty as usual (oh, that sauerkraut – it’s all around), but I am making a stout-cherry-marzipan cake this evening, and my sister is tuning in with a pumpkin-cinnamon filled banitza (thined rolled pastry). And I saw my Mum hiding a huuuuuuge Toblerone somewhere…So, there will be suuuuugaaaaar! 🙂
Have a great time this Christmas!

    • Hi Kandice,
All the comments here are giving me new ideas for power perfumes! I hope you find one that works for you. My power perfumes are all over the map, that is to say the prices all vary a lot as do the styles. They are not all bombastic . Some are very subtle. Have a wonderful holiday and thanks for joining the draw!

  8. Azar – this perfume sounds… magnificent!! Can it really deliver such domination?? I must know! I know you love artimisia – I don’t think I know what it smells like as I haven’t come across it yet in any of my meager perfume trials, so I’d certainly love to try this. As for power scents – I don’t think I’ve quite found one yet. Do Son makes me feel beautiful though, which can be nice when you’re a sleep deprived and haggard new mother. =D Nonetheless I will continue to search for a scent that makes me feel bold and invincible. Thanks for this lovely giveaway, I follow via Bloglovin!

    • Hi Sun Mi,

I have a closet full of artemisia (Artemisia ludoviciana and Artemisia tridentata) that was picked this past spring and summer along the Columbia Gorge and in the Methow Valley. I had intended to distill it but never got around to it. Some is being tinctured.
It still smells fabulous and perhaps is serving to drive moths away?

It has been many years since I was a sleep deprived new mother but I remember the feeling all too well! You do need a powerful pick-me-up!

  9. After reading the post this morning I thought I’d try some “Queen” by Queen Latifah. Seems pretty powerful considering who made it and also because it’s not overly flowery like most of my perfumes. I started out feeling good, but that was soon replaced by shame because of all the cookies I ate this morning. Is there a perfume that can help with that?

But some which I wear to feel invincible (well I dont wear them often due to fear of running out) are Nombre Noir and Cuiron..In fact, I don’t remember when I wore them last but having them in my collection alone makes me feel invisible 😀

  11. I don’t know that I can think of any perfumes right now that make me feel stronger. Most of the time, I make my perfume choices to make me feel more complete (depending on what I think I might be missing that day). This past week or so, Bvlgari Black has always seemed like a good choice! Comforting, but just a little weird and not completely lacking backbone. I follow by email, thank you!

    • Yes, Nemo, B. Black is a little weird. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it and have not used it for a long time. It really does have that rubber tire thing going on but dries down so nicely. I think I will dig mine out of the pile. Thank you for the comment and for entering the draw!

Hmmm… Power scents for me come in 2 varieties–the cool, calm, collected I-am-in-control ones and the strong, powerful, bow-down-mortals kind.

Pour Un Homme de Caron is one of my go-to calm ones, and TDC Bergamote, and SL Vetiver Oriental. Tauer LDDM and Dark Passages straddle both categories. I think the ultimate power scent for me is Ormonde Jayne Woman which also encompasses both aspects.
Dom sounds like it fits in that miche, I would love to try it! Thanks!
