Is Your Perfume Making You FAT?

Hello APJ Pals,

Spring is here in February and there is no snow pack in the mountains! Despite assurances to the contrary from the local “powers that be” I’m afraid that the PNW may be in for a long drought and one hot, endless summer. The possibility of dealing with year round bathing suit weather has led me to the realization that I need to drop ten pounds – and FAST!

Is Your Perfume Making You FAT?

Where did this extra weight come from? I exercise daily and eat wholesome food (albeit in mass quantities). OK. I’ll admit that my diet has had an impact on my weight gain but I am beginning to suspect that some of my lovely, vintage fragrances have also had an effect on the pudge. Oh Dear! Perhaps my perfumes are making me FAT!

fat_chespin geckomania DeviantArtPhoto Stolen DeviantArt

Of course, this statement is mere speculation, based on personal experience and totally anecdotal. This assertion is not tied to any scientific studies about phthalates in perfumes (or in anything else for that matter). Phthalates? No doubt you have heard about those plasticizing, xeno-estrogenic chemicals that have been implicated in obesity, infertility, various cancers, asthma, allergies, etc. Most of the phthalates now being used in perfumes have been deemed safe by the international “powers that be“. Nevertheless, I could swear that when I wear old Fidji for more than a week or vintage Poison for a day I start to pack on the pounds.

From what I hear it is almost impossible to avoid exposure to phthalates. They are present, in one form or another, in cosmetics, hair care, deodorants, soaps, perfumes, cleaning and laundry products, shower curtains, candles, garden hoses, lawn furniture, toys, roof shingles, carpeting, automotive interiors…There is even one fragrance that is reminiscent of the smell of a new plastic shower curtain.

Let me make this clear: I understand that all phthalates are not equally evil. That being said, if I can lose a little weight by simply changing my perfume I’m all for it!

And so, starting today, I intend to relegate my vintage beauties and all of my yummy, appetite stimulating gourmands to perfume storage. Out of site, out of mind! Until the ten pounds are lost I will be going au naturel! Perhaps you will join me?

  1. I don’t think perfumes really make a difference one way or the other. The effect of phthalates would be minimal compared to lifestyle/diet/health factors – if anything, foody/gourmand scents makes me less likely to want an actual cookie!

Hmmm…maybe that’s why I’ve put on a few kilos, I’ve just started trying out all these gourmand scents, wonder if they are making me hungry! I haven’t really thought of the phthalates, I’m kind of new to the fragrance world but I do care to research more about it.

    • Hello Gaby,
Most gourmands work on me just like the smell of vanilla or freshly baked bread from a bakery! Instead of quelling food cravings they stimulate them, not unlike the canned smells that some restaurants (and bakeries?) use to draw in customers. Thank you for joining this draw!

Your gourmands are already making me hungry. There is a bowl of raw hazelnuts on the dining room table. I will go for those…gee, I hate dieting but raw hazelnuts are almost as tasty as Toblerone and have to be cracked open first . That slows me down a little bit. Thank you for joining the draw!

  5. Hi Azar and APJ,
what a fabulous giveaway, thank you for the chance!

I admit I had to stop caring about what’s inside my fragrances because it’s one of the few life pleasures I feel I can enjoy with a certain carefree attitude, and although I have a little shiver when I read all those horrible names in the INCI’s I try not to think about it and enjoy my fumes.
As for scent effects on my weight I didn’t notice any changes since I am a fragrance addict (4 years now), but I feel like gourmand scents could sometimes be a good way to satisfy one’s craving for sweet things. One thing I’ve noticed is that I started paying more attention to food’s taste and smell since loving scents so much, I guess smelling/tasting more accurately could be good for wealth (avoiding to devour food)? Who knows…

I follow by email, thx again!

I believe taking the time to really taste food accurately might help this diet. I will start treating my food like I treat my fragrance. Thank you for that helpful suggestion! One of the aspects of food, though, that keeps me munching is the texture. I am a crunch junkie! What to do about that?

  8. Hi Azar, I don’t think we wear enough fragrances for phtalates to have a significant impact on weight gain. Do you use plastic waterbottles/food containers? I think phtalates ingested orally is more damaging on our hormones.

Maybe you can step up your exercise regime? Two weeks of crossfit shredded my post-Xmas bulge.

Thank you for your positive outlook and encouraging words! I do walk up and down very steep hills for an hour a day, but I imagine crossfit would be far more effective!
Are all plastic containers created equal? I’ve read some are less of a problem than others.

      • Indeed, not all plastic containers are created equal. But I’ve been warned by radiation scientists not to use ANY plastic in the microwave.

Hills are fantastic workouts too! The trick to exercise though is to keep switching it up – never do the same kind of exercise all the time for too long. For your hills, I recommend running up and down, or walking up with 15kg weights in a backpack, or carry heavy dumbells. That’ll get the cardio pumping!

  13. This comment box is not big enough for all the things (read: vitriol) i have to say about phthalates. And you’re right, it’s not just perfume. what’s ODD is that when it’s in perfume, we’re all “oh. ok, it smells pretty.” Yet, we all agree that despite a big mac tasting good, we understand it’s certainly not good for us. so, you know, if the poison smells or tastes good, then “could we have some more, please?”

Consumers have, in general, lost their power. it is no longer supply and demand, but we demand you buy what we supply.

it’s understandable why some people don’t resonate with natural perfume… it doesn’t last long enough (no extenders, no phthalates), doesn’t project enough (no boosters, no phthalates, no aldehydes to carry into damaged olfactory systems)and costs too much (real plants used using real farming and real humans to carefully harvest distill and prepare the perfume.) why go through all this giving people jobs and caring for the planet when you can pay 30 cents to make a 30 dollar bottle of chemicals that, while smell good, are collecting in breast tissue, collecting in your furniture and clothes and remain carcinogenic for long after you can smell it. Not to mention the incredible toxic waste which you’ll end up drinking later anyway.

Does that mean i don’t like synthetic perfume? of course not. There are mixed media scents out there which rock my world! there are a few synth perfumes which are olfactory genius. Perfume is ART.

Humans mitigate damage as a form of survival on earth. A day basking in Joop! won’t kill you (i might)- but a lifetime of it will build up toxic chemicals. (and a lifetime of lavender essential oil may build up allergens to it, in fairness.) what you are willing to mitigate is up to you. The greater picture that synthetic perfumery is, by definition, a spin off, an attempt to mimic and ultimately a poor representation of natural perfumery- even the most dedicated synthetic raw materials dealer has to admit- there is no replacement for real jasmine; for real rose.

oh right… fat. (which is exactly where phthalates are stored btw)– have seen people use scent to satiate food cravings with both gourmand and non-gourmand aromas… i don’t know if it works. i don’t immediately want ice cream after smelling vanilla, and i certainly feel much more clean and “active” after a huge citrus waft.

The PNW will hopefully remain it’s evergreen shade this summer, although i can certainly understand the worry. Perhaps you could take a very PNW attitude and bask in the beauty of yourself… be it in bathing suit or power suit. i’m fairly certain you could walk down Capitol Hill, Pike or Pine without anyone batting an eye. you know what i mean. 😉

ok, sorry about the soapbox, but you asked… and i happen to have this travel sized one i keep in my shopping bag. 😉

    • HA! I love your rant, einsof! Is there room for a couple more in that shopping bag?
Seriously, I have so many allergies that I can’t keep track of them all. I carefully avoid a few things (certain drugs, some seafoods, celery and legumes) but manage to moderate the effects of the rest by ROTATION! I love my natural fragrances but will have to rotate those too. Fortunately for me scents are not as much a problem as foods, but even with the food allergies I manage to gain weight! The cause could be phthalates but more than likely has to do with consumption of mass quantities of crunchy things… And yes, I know what you mean! 😉

I’m resolutely not going to go and examine my boxes and bottles. I do not wish to know. If Nahema is responsible for my extra 12 pounds I shall stay 12 heavier! Interesting idea though. I wonder if there is a relationship between people who wear gourmands and weight gain, as if spraying vanilla and other such sweet aroma chemicals indicates a likelihood of actually eating the same flavours?

I don’t like gourmands very much, a snooty cold chypre is more my thing but I do have a sweet tooth and a wobbly belly.

I don’t think I’ve notice perfumes making me fat (I’m in the slow process of shedding baby weight – perhaps slower because of perfumes??) but I am concerned about the number of chemicals and substances that we are ingesting (via mouth/skin) on a daily basis. The only culprit about my weight gain is my insatiable sweet tooth. And I am struggling it. Sometimes, sweet and gourmand frags help me, like Spiriteuse Double Vanille, most of the PG/s, Keiko Mecheri’s Loukhoum/s, Uncle Serge’s vanille, etc. But sometimes, it’s just the other way around – I am craving more. It’s a hormonal thing, I guess. I always blame my hormones.
Probably, scents like Secretions Magnifique have the potential to cease the hunger, but I haven’t tried it yet…Some of the Blood Concept frags did that to me…

Your description of of Sultana was so gourmand. I have not tried this but have several other oils made with musk, rose and oud that smell like – well – musk, rose and oud. That could be because of the oud oils used or because I am not searching for the foody scents in these attars. I know that some of my pure oud oils are very fruity or chocolatey.
What is this thing with hormones? I am so old that I’ve almost forgotten that I have (or had) them. 😉 I mixed blessing for sure.

When it’s Springtime in New Hampshire
      It’s 99 below.
      The residents go barefoot
In the ice and drifted snow.
      The polars bears get sunburned
And the seals sing all the day.
When its Springtime in New Hampshire,
      In new Hampshire far away…

I’m sure you can come up with a better version that includes Olga.

And yes, and of course everything and anything will give you cancer. I’m convinced it was the brown rice. 😉 BTW grapefruit scents don’t work so well for my weight loss anymore. I just crave more citrus. Now I’m wondering how many pomelos one person can eat in a single day? You are IN this one.
