I inherited three beautiful diamonds and an emerald and diamond ring. They are pieces of great beauty.

Writing about perfume is challenging and can be surprisingly difficult. It is all so subjective. Then add that to the fact that it is impossible to know what something smells like without physically smelling it. Nevertheless some writers prefer lists of notes and go onto describe them. Which is just fine unless they get it wrong. This can have a knock on effect with perfume people deciding, predicated upon what the writer says not to try it. This is extremely disheartening for the perfumers. So if you are waiting to have each and every note of Pichola dissected and discussed, move on!

All of the Neela Vermeire Créations are jewels in a sea of paste. Pichola is no exception, indeed it may be the diamond in the collection. Like my own diamonds, Pichola is for special occasions or social events. (I must add that my daughter aka BlondesWunder does not agree at all and has worn it on many days using up at least half of my stash, and even wears it to the gym)) I hear through the perfumista grapevine that Pichola wears close to the skin, with an average sillage. Which is exactly what I mean with perfume being subjective. Pichola is an absolute spicy, floral bombshell and develops and lasts for many hours, leaving a soft and elegant sandalwood as its last breath – to me. Notes do include cardamom, clementine, and bergamot, orange, rose, jasmine, sandalwood and vetiver. Pichola is in perfect symmetry with Bombay Bling, Mohur, Ashoka and Trayee. That Bertrand Duchafour has achieved this with Neela Vermeire is formidable and speaks highly of their relationship.

In the manner of the reflections off of Lake Pichola in Rajasthan from which it is named – Pichola reflects and diffuses each of its many notes. As light moves through a diamond, it is scattered and fractured, creating the sparkle that diamonds are known for. A diamond is evaluated on on its ability to reflect and refract light in all directions. Pichola glimmers and sparkles and changes with the light. Flawless.

    Neela’s perfumes are like jewels and Pichola is a real gem.

    I actually think it’s more difficult to write about a scent without referencing the notes and what it smells like the whole time. Youve done an amazing job.

    I bet BlondesWunder is killer in it.

    • Hi Tara! I am so sick of notes you cannot imagine. I know they are necessary and it is the first thing I look at too, but really, wouldn´t it be better to just try a fragrance without having preconceived idea about it? Yes, Hannah smells incredible in it. Bussis. xxxxx

  4. Val, I sure do wish this worked on me. Sadly, tuberose is my nemesis. I tried to ignore it in Pichola but nope, couldn’t!
    Btw, I love that you have refrained from dissecting the notes and your approach to that is hilarious and refreshing.

  5. Hi Val,
    Loved this post! I also love Neela’s gems. For me Pichola is a slightly warm pastry enjoyed early on a cool summer morning while sitting on a veranda overlooking a garden full of flowers. I keep my fine jewelry in the safe and my favorite perfumes in dark cupboards. I just have to remember to use them once in awhile…even if I have to wear them to the grocery store!

  7. Beautiful review – nay, coruscating! I especially liked the phrase ‘jewels in a sea of paste’. I can see the link with the sun sparkling on that lake in India now – it is all coming together in your exquisitely cut diamond of a post. Having worked in the industry, I would definitely call Pichola a ‘fancy yellow’. It didn’t work on my skin particularly, but as the Blondeswunder attests, other people’s mileage will surely vary.

    • A 20 year old body, with long blonde hair blowing in the wind, makes such a difference.
      It really does. She smells utterly fabulous in it. I must add that smelling it on someone else, and not on my skin with my mind being totally on how it smells (we all have our own idiosyncratic ways of “testing”) gives another impression. Bussis. xxx

    I am usually not very keen on tuberose but Pichola smells heavenly on my skin and on me it really is a bombshell, too. (My favorite form Neela is Mohur).

    • Hi Anka! I am a bit hesitant to mention that I really didn´t feel the tuberose was dominant at all, but it wasn`t. Mohur is the one that I have a full bottle of. I enjoy the others too, and if I was rich I would have them all. I love the bottles. xxxxx

  12. I have learned that I cannot determine even remotely what a scent will smell like from the list of notes. I do know however, there are some notes that just don’t play well on my skin, so I tend to avoid perfumes with those notes. That said, I am eager to try this one. I am so happy that a local perfumery has just gotten this in stock. Now I just need to find the time to drive into The City to try it out.

  13. I need to test it more because – as of now – it’s the only NVC’s perfume that made me question the price. It might be that it needs to be sprayed not dabbed. But “as is” I felt a little cheated: as much as I love the brand, I didn’t get along with this one. But I’ll try it again since in your interpretation it sounds so appealing 🙂
