Jackal by Jacqueline Steele for Goest Perfumes 2012

Hey Independent Perfumery Lovers,

One of the things that makes Indie Perfumery stand out for me is their fabulous ability to ignore the mainstream, mass-tige and niche restraints by ruling bodies. If they want to put an overdose of some regulated ingredient then they damn well will. That opens up a world of fabulous ingredients that the rest of the fragrant world must skimp on or ignore. As you can tell I LOVE Independent perfumery……

From Surrender To Chance: Goest Perfumes is a Los Angeles-based artisan fragrance house. Perfumer-owner Jacqueline Steele creates fully handmade fragrances with an intuitive unisex aesthetic using only pure, essential, raw quality ingredients made especially for the sensual person wanting to enhance, rather than disguise, his or her persona.
Jackal’s effect is that of your own skin, only sexier. It wears very close to the skin and can easily enhance your other fragrances. It features notes of bitter chocolate, vanilla, patchouli, toasted tobacco and sweet smoke. It is a parfum.

I bought my Jackal sample today from Surrender To Chance and I grabbed a nice big spritz decant (pricey but well worth the spend). Resinous chocolate!! The first spritz is dark chocolate with a earthy, breathy, funky patchouli. Quite a big scent to start with and I’m surprised there’s no mention of birch, there is real darkness and depth and the patchouli is old school. The vanilla tempers the darkness of both patchouli and chocolate and round the fragrance out beautifully.

Here we smell a perfumer using essential oils but completely bypassing the often murky and dank natural creations for something luminous and nuanced but with a burning dark heart. I could imagine the Goth crews going apeshit for Jackal and filling their lightless clubland with its compellingly dark lustre. To be fair I could imagine this appealing across genres to a very wide audience; from hippies to hipsters, Dads and daughters, even office appropriate if you give it half an hour to burn off.

Jackal smells amazing up close and is quiet from a few steps away, interesting how they do that, longevity is really good for a natural too.

I’ve never heard of Goest, but indies are fab. Do Serge Lutens and Jo Malone count as indie? I have to admire perfumers with the skill and nerve to do something gorgeous, daring and non-mainstream. Follow by email!

    Hi there Portia,

I follow by email and FB. I haven’t ever tried Goest Perfume before but would love to!

One of my favourite Independents is Perfume by Nature, located in Byron Bay in Northern New South Wales (Australia). I know you only asked for one, but another favourite is Aromantika, another Aussie Independent. Both of these make natural perfumes that are beautiful and distinctive and some of them are my very favourite, most reached-for scents.

  3. Patty Pong says:

I follow by e-mail. I like many creations from many independents. One that stands out among them to me is Shelley Waddington’s Zelda. 🙂

Email follow. Deep Midnight for goth deep dark yumminess, lasting and $17. Rebel and Mercury for naturals that are not herbal, especially the incense notes.

    Hi Portia,
I follow by email. I’ve never heard of Goest, but Jackal sounds right up my alley. My favorite indies are Sonoma Scent Studios, Olympic Orchids & SmellBent. All of them have some non-floral scents that I love. Thanks for the draw.

    Hi Portia,
I follow by e-mail and bloglovin’. I have not tried Goest but adore so many Indies and am very interested to give this one a try, especially after your great review. My all time favorite Indie is Olympic Orchids. No surprise there 🙂 Ellen’s fragrances all have a rich complexity that keeps me coming back for more.
    Azar xx

I have not tried Goest Perfumes. The description is very attractive so I wish to try it. And name “jackal” is fabulous, I like it very much.
My favorite Independent brand is D.S. & Durga. I’m in love with their Siberian snow, also My Indian Childhood and Spirit of the Glen are very good.
I follow by email. Thank you.

Follow by e mail and social media.Have never heard of Goest and the closest I have got to Indie would be Gorilla perfumes if that even counts.

  9. Sun Mi says:

I’ve never heard of this line but the scent sounds really interesting. I can’t say that it sounds like something I’ll love – but that’s exactly why I have to try it! I haven’t tried a lot of indies yet, but I am rather fond of Olympic Orchids. Thanks for the draw, I follow via bloglovin!

I follow by email and facebook. I’m new to exploring fragrance and haven’t tried any indie perfumes but I’m looking forward to trying Sweet Dreams by Lhami.

  12. dari says:

I follow by email. I have never tried the perfumes before, they look nice.

  13. Lena says:

Given that all the more niche perfumes I’ve tried are owned by one of the big conglomerates, I don’t think I’ve ever actually sampled a true independent. I’ve resolved to remedy that very soon by ordering some decants for the first time (which, by the way, I now feel confident in doing thanks to you and the gang, Portia, because I wasn’t sure how reliable etc the services were prior to reading about them on your blog (which I follow by email). So thank you!).

  14. Rincoglionita says:

I follow by email. I’ve heard of Goest but not yet tried. My fave indie is Sonoma Scent Studio – love her wares!
