Happy New Year APJ!
I am a citrus junkie. I love eating and smelling the new crops of grapefruits, pomelos, lemons, limes, oranges and tangerines that come into our local markets in November through early December. I also adore the flowers of the early winter blooming (Northern hemisphere) Cattleya orchid hybrids that, coincidentally, often smell like citrus fruits or flowers. On December 15th Ellen Covey introduced her new White Cattleya fragrance happily coinciding with the arrival of fresh citrus in the stores and the opening of cattleya blossoms in greenhouses everywhere.

Olympic Orchids give these featured accords:
Citron, lemon, neroli, jasmine, heliotrope, orchid accord, light vanilla, musk.
White Cattleya was created as a wedding fragrance but to me it is the ultimate semi-gourmand citrus perfume opening with an oily-sweet lemon zest. Imagine the pores of a yellow lemon rind exuding droplets of fragrance and you have an idea what I smell right off the top. There are almost fifty varieties of lemons grown commercially these days. In our local stores we see a lot of “Meyers” lemons (a lemon x orange hybrid), “Villafranca”, Florida’s leading lemon and “Eureka”, the top US commercial variety. For me the zesty, sweet opening of White Cattleya is very close to the fragrance and flavor of the sweet Persian lemon “Limoo Shirin” (C. limetta). This mildly sweet, slightly bitter, low acid fruit has a smooth, thin skin and is about the size and shape of a tennis ball.
As we all know certain citrus top notes are flighty and evaporate within moments of application. Not so in White Cattleya. What I perceive as Persian lemon zest stays in place on my skin for at least 30 minutes before its starts to shift to the scent of one of my favorite Italian liqueurs – Limoncello. As Limoncello comes to the fore I begin to detect one of my least favorite florals, the dreaded heliotrope. Fortunately for me, the gooey sweet marzipan aspect of heliotrope is tempered with jasmine and the tenacious citron. The floral/citrus heart of White Cattleya stays in place for hours, eventually morphing (but not fading) to an ethereal vanilla and musk. White Cattleya is a powerful fragrance with strong to moderate sillage, easily lasting for 14 to 16 hours. Also, on my skin, it does not wash off even after a hot shower. If you are not a lemon lover, be careful how you apply this fragrance! That being said, lemon and jasmine scents are both known to sharpen our wits and help us feel better about ourselves

White Cattleya is really one of a kind and bears little resemblance to most citrus fragrances I’ve tried. Like all of Ellen’s perfumes it is original and unusual. You might enjoy it!

Quite by coincidence, this afternoon I was having a browse over at the Olympic Orchids website, musing about a first purchase (tbc). I did indeed notice the new White Cattleya scent, and thought to myself that if I bought a sample set, I would choose all of the different Cattleyas to compare (I know practically nothing about orchid scents, but I am curious!).

Lemons are memories of my grandfather who died when I was six. We used to slice a lemon in half, grind it into sugar on a plate and suck the lemons. I love the smell of lemon if it is not like furniture polish.

Never tried White Cattleya. I tried OO Red Cattleya and liked it very much. It was spicy, fruity, sharp floral. Very unique.

Oh all things citrus and lemon are fab. I have a wonderful friend who makes the most amazing lemon drizzle cake for me. I find it hard to share too much of it!
White Cattleya by Ellen Covey has been on my radar for a while and i hope to order some of her scents when finances allow. I do love lemon in a scent and as you said in your review, i too find that it makes me more aware plus it’s a feel-good scent for a murky monday morning.

I loooveeee lemons especially lemon blossoms! I love it for baking, infused in water, in salad dressings, on food, the juice, the zest, the smell .. Everything about it to me just screams fresh and summer. I love the citrus family in generally. I haven’t tried the new white cattleya though.

It is amazing to me how many different orchid blossoms smell like specific fruits, various foods and spices. Some smell like peaches, others like lemons or citrus and still others like chocolate. The scent of lemon, in various versions, seems to be as popular with orchids as it is with people. As you probably know there are also those orchids that smell like rotten meat or worse! Whatever it takes to attract the pollinators…perhaps people and plants have a lot in common 😉

Hadn’t seen your message before now. One of my classic citrus favorites is Hermes Consentre d`Orange Verte. To me it’s summer in a bottle. Being a huge fan of grapefruit I very much enjoy Miller Harris Le Pamplemousse. And for a citrus with the softest oriental twist I like Chanel Allure Pour Homme Edition Blanche. Citrus was my gateway drug to the world of perfume. Such an easy category of notes to love. Uplifting.

Yep, I love lemons… love lemony flavours and lemony fragrances… In fact I love all citrus. It started when I was but a wee kiddy with a lemon soap that was even shaped like a lemon. And then there was grandmas lemon meringue pie. These days I have graduated to Mitsouko, lemon ginger smoothies and tea and cocktails and just straight up lemon.

Wow, Azar, this sounds fabulous – and I’m impressed with your knowledge and familiarities with lemons! I love lemons, and I find that when I’m pregnant I especially crave lemons (particularly in the form of chick fil a lemonade, which is easily accessible). I follow via email. I adore grapefruit and lime, tangerine paired with violet makes a wonderful sherbet accord. Lemon is something I cook with more than wear, but I love everything I’ve smelled so far from Olympic Orchids.

One of my favorite citrusy treats is an Orange Creamsicle. The orange sherbert and vanilla ice-cream taste like sunshine on a stick! Lolita Lempicka’s Elle L’aime is a creamsicle for the nose :). Portia calls Elle L’aime “sunshine in a glass”. White Cattleya, while not at all like Elle L’aime, gives me that same sunny, happy feeling. Do you have a favorite Olympic Orchids?

Citrus perfumes usually associated with insignificant summer scents for me, but I tried some of Olympic Orchids (all scents very good balanced and rich) and that’s why I believe in success of this particular lemon)) Thanks for the draw. I follow by email.

White Cattleya is NOT one of those ephemeral, light, insignificant summer citrus scents. It IS balanced and rich with plenty of body and amazing longevity. Which of the current Olympic Orchid fragrances do you favor?

My favorite Olympic Orchid is DEV #1: Foreplay. And California Chocolate is very good too – mighty dark chocolate with orange liqueur.

When I smell heliotrope I almost always get a very cloying, almondy sweetness, reminiscent of almond extract flavored marzipan with something fruity thrown in, cherries or fantasy berries. I can detect this same sweetness in White Cattleya but it IS very balanced here and tempered by the jasmine or the musk or both?

Hi Azar, I love lemons. So much that as a child I would eat them, but without the sugar that Gina mentions. (I was a lover of sour and bitter even as a child.) About the only kind we get in Canada are the more generic ones, often with a very thick skin. That makes Meyer lemons the winner by far. Hefty squeezes of lemon juice into glasses of water are very necessary to me to re-hydrate.
Will never turn my nose up at lemon meringue pie nor at citrus fragrances.

I don’t normally gravitate towards lemon notes in perfumes but since I like/love most of the Orchid Scents I can’t help but want to try this one. I’m even more interested if it doesn’t smell like furniture polish.

I love lemons when they are done right in perfumes but many are getting them wrong lately. I guess IFRA has to do with it, too. I have not tried Cattleya. thanks for the generous draw. I am in the US

I agree that many perfumers have really messed up the lovely lemon! And it’s not just the celebu-scents and lower priced fragrances and body sprays that have made a botch of this sunny citrus. IFRA might indeed have something to do with it. Whatever the case may be I can’t abide dishwasher detergent in my perfume. Ellen’s lemony White Cattleya is free of the smell of cleaning products!
Please forgive me for repeating myself, but did you see the corrections I made to this post in my comments above?
Also – another detail! APJ needs to know how you follow for each and every draw. I don’t understand why but it seems to be important.

Hi Azar, I follow APJ via gmail. I enjoyed your review of White Cattleya very much. Your description made my mouth water because I adore lemons.
I grew up in a climate where citrus trees are common in many gardens. I have vivid memories of the green-sharp smell of crushed citrus leaves and stems, the bitter sap from cut branches, and eating all parts of the fruit.
I dearly love citrus in fragrances. The traditional trio of citrus top, floral heart, and vanilla base is my idea of fragrance perfection. I have not tried any fragrance from Olympic Orchids, but I have had the chance to smell scented orchids. They are divine.

I’m so happy that you enjoyed this review. It was fun to write. Just thinking of all my favorite citrus made my mouth water too.
Several years of my childhood were spent in a warm, sub-tropical climate I recall a blood orange tree, a pink grapefruit and a navel orange in our garden. I also remember the acres and acres of the local orange groves when they were in bloom…Aah! And also the various botanical gardens that grew orchids and kept trained parrots.
I suppose it isn’t surprising that even today I love citrus, grow a few orchids and have a pet parrot. 🙂

I love the smell of fresh lemons and citrus, and citrus zest. However, I have not tried a lemon perfume I have loved, or even liked. However, I am REALLY curoius to see how citrus fares in the skilled hands (and nose!) of Ellen Covey 🙂 I follow via email, and I am in the US.

Ellen did a great job with this lemon/citron combo. I have an orchid in the greenhouse whose pinky, orange blooms smell a lot like the limoncello phase of White Cattleya. Now I can have that fragrance year round in a perfume!

I adore lemons, so much so that my wedding fragrance (long, long ago) was Diorella. We have an Eureka tree in our garden and a Meyer lemon tree waiting for us in our ‘tree change’ place. I grew Heliotrope for a while; the deep purple color and honey scent attracted bees, but I was repelled by the underlying bitter almond/ almond essence notes. I had not since thought about those smells or understood why Heliotrope repelled me until I read your piece. Thanks for the post! White Cattleya sounds intriguing. I follow via email.

How long have you had your “tree change” place? We tried to make a “sea change” several years ago to a cute cottage on the Oregon Coast. To make a long story short, we ended up with the “big” house in the burbs and the cottage right next to some of the worst winter weather in the north Pacific. After ten years of we finally sold the little house by the sea. I miss it but I don’t miss the long distance maintenance. No lemon trees either, here or there! It is just too cold, even in the summer on the coast. My citrus fix has to come from the market.
Regarding heliotrope: I have tried time and again to like it and have used the plants in the garden as you do, to attract bees. I just can’t abide that sweet, cloying, powdery, almond extract scent.

Hi flowergirlbee!
In addition to certain cattleya hybrids with white flowers, many other orchids have a lemon or citrus scent. The green flowering BLC hybrid Ports of Paradise “Emerald Isle” smells like citrus. Aerangis citrata’s small light yellow flowers produce a strong lemon scent and the deep yellow to orange flowering Polystachya bella smells a lot like Lemon Scented Pledge furniture polish. It seems that several perfumers, and orchids plants too, have problems getting that lemon scent just right 😉

I think you would like this one. It is not light and lemony, but rather more like the zest of a persian lemon. BTW – I planted some C. limetta seeds the other day. I hope to have a few baby trees sometime soon. 🙂
