CHANEL N°5: The One That I Want – The Film

Hi there APJ,

Gisele Bündchen has been the highest paid model in the world every year since 2004, and in 1999 was credited with bringing sexy back to the runway and killing the heroin chic look. She was born in 1980 making her 36 years old which is basically a model dinosaur. There is still something so fresh and endearing about her, still sexy, that killer body and a smile that men and women fall instantly in love with. Did you know she is 5’11”? So tall yet she always manages to look petite, and enormously strong. Wikipedia notes that: In 2014, she was listed as the 89th Most Powerful Woman in the World by Forbes PLUS Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell have stated that Bündchen is the only remaining true supermodel.

Below we get to see Gisele in the 2014 CHANEL No 5 ad, this is the long play version. A seriously controversial piece of film. The song’s lyric change had feminists up in arms, the billion $ lifestyle and the 2 minute hug with her daughter before relegating the child to nanny care had mothers upset and running off before a job was finished had working women outraged, there were other complaints that have slipped my mind. Yet if you can overlook all that there has appeared a gorgeous and lush piece of escapism that you can get lost in for three minutes to unclog your brain.

I hope you enjoy,
Portia xxx

Doesn’t make much sense to me, but it’s visually stunning. The love interest is the actor who portrayed Sonny on the premium cable series Treme–check it out on Amazon or Netflix, it’s about the lives of New Orleans residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Obtaining vintage no 5 edc on ebay has given me a newfound appreciation for the scent–finally clicked for me.

      Hey Caroline,
The EdC is perfect. I have some here and it lives so beautifully on my skin. Gorgeous.

Among the classics such as Shalimar and Chanel 5, I def. prefer Chanel 5.

That fact that it is subject to multiple interpretations probably shows that it’s an effective and interesting film. Whether or not it sells the product is another matter.

I could do my own narky response: the woman is torn between her child, her career, and her rather weak and confused bloke, who, it seems, needs to have her run after him to make everything right.

And why would we criticise the woman for a two second hug but not the man, who did not interact with the child at all?

Goes to show that money doesn’t buy happiness, eh? 🙂

    • annemariec says:

Actually, the heart of the thing for me is the moment when the woman sees the note and realises that something is seriously wrong. Instead of panicking, she puts on a brave face for the child, plays with her as usual, and gets on with her day. It takes courage to do that.

What is thoroughly intriguing is that Chanel obviously gave the green light to Baz Luhrmann explore these real life problems in an ad. I guess that are hoping that some people will appreciate it, while others will just enjoy the ad on the visual level. The main criterion for a successful ad is that people remember it. If people forget your ad, you are toast.

      • australianperfumejunkies says:

Yes, Gisele is a surprisingly good actress too.
        Well, I remembered it.
I wonder too who it’s aimed at. Was it a Christmas or Mother’s Day ad aimed at the men who buy for women or was it a general ad?

HA! Goes to show that CHANEL does not buy happiness.
I’d rather be crying in a Porsche than laughing on a pushbike though.

I saw it as a huge push to sell a ton of No.5, on the eve of the Launch of yet another revamped version. This is a disturbing trend that’s been around a while now. When I see this behaviour, I start scanning press releases, for clues… I call it “the big cheat” and it means a new flanker is on the way. Fortunately I still have a 70’s bottle of the EdT. I’ll stick with it.
