Hi APJ,

I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.

SOTD 20 – 26 November 2017

The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:
Guerlain Mitsouko EdT
Pharrell Williams Girl
The Different Company Oriental Lounge
Vintage Fendi original
Vintage YSL Opium EdT
Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.

LAST WEEKS WINNER!! Kandice

Guerlain Shalimar tonight. Perfectly glam to farewell a longtime friend who was exactly as fabulous, elegant, loud and lovely.
    Portia xx

  2. Jesse Lewis says:

Nicolaï New York on my neck since this morning. Layered Bvlgari Mon Jasmine Noir and John Varvatos Dark Rebel Rider (which works brilliantly if you use 2:3 ratio)

  3. fanny says:

Opus VIII by Amouage, caved in to a FB about a month ago after having hoarded samples of it. Love this perfume !!

(Not entering, btw, I know and have/had most of them 😉 , thanks Portia!)

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

      Great choice Fanny.
In the last 12 months I have finally come around to the Library series. Don’t know how it took me so long.
      Portia xx

  4. Anna Maria says:

AnaisAnais L’original EdT, revisiting my early frag experiences, and Fleur Fatale by KK.

  5. Jackie b says:

Today I revisited Parfum Sacre by Caron, it was pretty and lasted most of the day.
Maybe perfume is like children, the pushy ones get the most attention but the ones at the back of the shelf are kind of special.
Not that I would know anything about children! Prefer animals.

  6. Marzipan says:

Layering three of my full bottle Dames- Mimosa, Narcissus and Osmanthus….I am in floral heaven on this Monday morning!

    • SonomaVelvet says:

oh my Marzipan… that does sound amazing. Narcissus is now one of my most favourite cravings. I’ve got the Gardenia on its way to me, and I can’t wait to try that too. Have you tried the Tuberose by him. I’m so intrigued by his soliflores and I love Tuberose.

      • Marzipan says:

I have tried all of the soliflores…they are all gorgeous…the Tuberose is incredibly true to life so be prepared if you decide to get it!!!

    • Melanie says:

Marzipan, I’m super intrigued about these ‘Dames’ you keep wearing. Will check them out & see if they ship OS The Black flower Mexican vanilla has me super interested.

      • Marzipan says:

He has an “international” shop and indicates where he can ship outside of the States…I will see if I can find the link and if it is OK with Portia will try to link it here.

      • Marzipan says:

here you go…P, if it’s not OK to provide the link then just delete this comment!

        https://export.dameperfumery.com/pages/frontpage

      • Melanie says:

Thankyou – there goes some more pocket money!!

      • Marzipan says:

Yes but it is well worth it as Dame is very reasonably priced and I must say that for an indie perfumer Jeff is incredibly generous!!! always includes LOADS of extra samples in all of his packages! If you do decide to bite the bullet and place an order do come back and let me know what you got and how you like it (good, bad or indifferent!)

      • Marzipan says:

Oh and don’t be put off by the mens selection! they are most definitely unisex and some of my absolute favorites from his line!

      • Marzipan says:

Yikes, Portia is going to kill me…but one last word 🙂

same for the womens selection of three notes….my 80 year old dad loves them , his favorite being Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli…I must have gifted him around 5 bottles from the original three note line. They are unisex as well.

      • Melanie says:

Thanks Marzipan -i think i’m going to order the Black Flower. Some of the other scents you mention aren’t available to send overseas. Have you tried Dark Horse – has everything in it i like so maybe that is worth a try too. Will keep you posted – thanks for the info, cheers

      • Marzipan says:

I have literally tried them all. I DO like Dark Horse but keep in mind it reads quite sweet on my skin…has a similar vibe to Earth Mother (which is now my favorite) and Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. If you decide to place an order ask Jeff for a sample of Dark Horse in the comments. He will most likely send it to you.

  7. MmkInPA says:

SJP Stash! Found at TJ Maxx, a great bargain.

  8. Gina says:

    Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger

    • SonomaVelvet says:

Another of my favourites. I find I need to be alone when I wear that one. I love it dearly but it’s one of a few that garners loud complaints from those around me when I wear it. I find that so fascinating how our perceptions can be so different, I’m in heaven and someone else experiencing the same thing thinks it’s awful.

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

      Hey Gina,
Sometimes I love this and other times it turns nasty. I can’t pinpoint why either so it gets neglected.
      Portia xx

  9. Lizbee says:

Ormonde Woman, spritzing from the bottom of my decant. Sooo close to buying a bottle. Trying to wait until December. Not sure I can, though.

  10. Kandice says:

So excited I won last week! Thank you, Portia 🙂 wearing Ginestet Botrytis today.

  11. AnnieA says:

In JM Velvet Rose and Oud which is about the only JM lasting over 15 minutes on me.

  12. SonomaVelvet says:

I have to shovel this morning and it’s going to take me a while. I’ve got myself all cozy with a thermos of tea and I’ve doused my scarf with Amouage Fate Woman. I can’t think of another perfume that for me just says, ‘cosy warm loving hug’ like this one does for me.

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

Shovel snow right SonomaVelvet? My first thought was shovelling shit from my helping out at the horse stud days.
      Portia xx

      • SonomaVelvet says:

hahaha Portia. That is so funny. That never in a million years occurred to me being a city girl in a northern climate. No indeed, I was shovelling Snow snow snow. I think my dear Amouage Fate would not fare well indeed if I had been shovelling shit.

  13. Jackie says:

    Wazamba Parfum D’empire
    Ex Nihilo French Affair
    Fumabar Cputeau de Poche

  14. Anastasia says:

On Monday it was Tom Ford Noir de Noir. Today I’m wearing Lubin Epidor, smells pure honey so far))

  15. australianperfumejunkies says:

Tom Ford Patchouli Absolu today. Soft and plush patchouli.

  16. Melanie says:

Narciso again for me! Picked Poudree.. Am nervous how it will travel – gonna be pretty warm here today in Adelaide. Did have Burberry Body in my hand. Can do that one tomorrow!

    • Melanie says:

Ha! I just checked myself and I’ve sprayed perfume on my shirt leaving a lovely perfume spot! doh! Hope the heat today dries it out and no one notices!

      • australianperfumejunkies says:

HA! I do that too Melanie, Aiming for my throat and misfire.
        Good luck with it.
        You smell lovely.
        Portia xx

      • Jackie b says:

I’ve done that too, but not as bad as shooting yourself in the mouth…PAHHH!

  17. VerbenaLuvvr says:

Staying home with a sick child today and wearing yummy Demeter Irish Cream. One of my favorites of their line, their booze scents are quite good. I know they get knocked for generally poor sillage and longevity, but for the price, I sprayed heavily and still perceive at 8 hrs later.

    • SonomaVelvet says:

oh, I’ve done that so many times, accidentally and on purpose. Depending on what kind of shirt and what kind of juice, I usually get away with it. I like it on the shirt because the perfume wafts up to my nose as I move around, less deliberate than bringing my wrist to my nose. I’ll move and get a delightful waft, that’s somehow a different kind of enjoyment.

    • Marzipan says:

I have been eyeballing the Demeters for a while..I tried a few samples and small decants and really liked them and fell in love with Incense (which is actually quite sweet). And yes, the price is right!!!! Have you tried any of their coffee scents? Or tobacco ones? Those I am interested in too.

  18. SonomaVelvet says:

So, post shovelling and bath, I had a desire for something completely different and here I am in Frederic Malle’s Eau de Magnolia. Oh my, I love this one so much, one of my never want to be without. I haven’t worn it in a couple of months so a couple of spritz’s seems strong and gorgeous to me mmmmm

  19. Fazal says:

I am wearing Amouage Memoir Woman, for the first time 🙂

  20. Saffyishere says:

On Monday morning I woke up and felt ‘odd’ So off to doc.. BP sky high. ordered to go home and rest. So to assist with me trying to be ‘calm’ I wore Yardley’s Lavender in the morning. mid afternoon to bed I wore a sample of Montale’s Sweet Oriental Dream. Woke up this morning, Tuesday feeling much better, less ‘heady’ and have chosen to wear Mahora.

  21. Greg says:

I’m really enjoying the heat, in a peculiar way, because it’s allowing me to break out colognes and other summery scents that haven’t seen the light of day for months.

Monday was Hermès Eau de Gentiane Blanche. This is unlike any other cologne I have, with floral accords and a notable iris scent. Nothing like the usual citrus and greens.

Today was the more traditional citrusy cologne: Penhaligon’s Extract of Limes. This one is discontinued, but it smells exactly as promised – limes! Sadly it has very little in the way of longevity, so I can see why this one may not have been a success.

  22. australianperfumejunkies says:

    Guerlain Lys Soleia

  23. Marzipan says:

Another day with my Dames but this time altering the number of sprays of each one….two Osmanthus over one Mimosa over one Narcissus. I am a floral sillage monster today!

    • MmkInPA says:

I love your Dame experiments! right now I have samples of Honeysuckle, Narcissus and Orange Flower. Not sure how they would combine!!

    • SonomaVelvet says:

hmmm, I’m thinking I’m going to have to pull the trigger and just order up some of that Tuberose. I’ll try to wait until my Gardenia comes and see if maybe possibly it might have been included as a sample but I have a feeling I’m going to love it.

  24. fanny says:

Tuscan Leather, from a miniature. Lovely!

  25. Lizbee says:

I’m wearing Amouage Dia today. Wore it out last night for dinner with a friend, too. It’s so gentle and fully present at the same time. I feel like a million bucks in it.

  26. Kandice says:

Wearing Guerlain Spiriteuse Double Vanille today. Needed the warmth and comfort of vanilla.

  27. SonomaVelvet says:

I have Black Flower Mexican Vanilla on one hand and my favourite rose ever, Sonoma Scent Studio’s Velvet Rose on the other hand mmmm. I forgot about Amouage Dia Lizbee, now I think I’ll go dig out my sample of that and give it another go later. I think I liked it when I tried it the first time.

    • Marzipan says:

I am going to suggest that you try layering them. The Black Flower makes a lovely base for so many of my favorite perfumes.

  28. MmkInPA says:

Today I have a sample of just released Sonoma Scent Studio Bee’s Bliss. I’m getting a bouquet of flowers, beeswax, gentle amber. Really nice.

  29. Saffyishere says:

I’m feeling a bit ‘off kilter’ this morning….I’m very tired, but my BP is lower but not quite ‘controlled’. Another go easy on myself day. I’ve chosen to wear Philosophy’s Amazing Grace.
    Have a terrific Wednesday everybody.

    • Kandice says:

Amazing Grace is a lovely scent especially when you need something soft and comforting. Hope things get better soon 🙂

  30. Melanie says:

Very happy to receive my first of many samples from STC – sweet packaging.
LArtisan Safran Troublant & Seville a l aube, Diff Co Oriental lounge & Osmanthus, Lorenzo Villerosi musk and Le Labo Santal 33 – of course i tried them all, at once!!
Oriental Lounge reminds me of something else – BLV Aqua Amara?? Osmanthus was very interesting and will get another run. VL Musk – exactly like musk lifesavers ( a lolly here in oz) the other two will get another test run tonight.

Todays winner was the Le Labo – when i first put it on i didn’t like it – not sure how to describe it – green? bit sharp? then about 20 minutes later i kept getting these wafts of something warm, sweet and a bit cedar. I LOVE IT! Wearing it to work today so will see how long it lasts. I don’t think my little sample will last for long. sorry for the essay 🙂 i’m a bit excited about smelling so great !!

  31. australianperfumejunkies says:

Fleur Narcotique by Ex Nihilo from a decant. I don’t really love this but for some reason I keep grabbing it and spritzing.

  32. Marzipan says:

Keeping it simple on this hump day and the day before Thanksgiving…one spritz of each of my full bottle Dames today on a base of Black Flower Mexican Vanilla…really liking this.

  33. Greg says:

Oh man, the heat. I decided to get in a bike ride early today, before it got too hot. I was out less than an hour and the temp rose 4 degrees. When I went out later on, it was like my eyes were being baked from the inside out. It’s too early in the summer for this.

After my shower I put on Virgin Island Water. This is a very good scent for this weather, but it just did not hold up today, disappearing on me very quickly.

  34. SonomaVelvet says:

Inspired by Lizbee I’ve got Dia on today. It’s very pretty and it’s got that Amouage ‘a little goes a long way’ thing about it too. I find I’m wishing I had 5 mls or 10 mls of it.

  35. fanny says:

Bvlgari Jasmin Noir, very nice for fall/winter. 🙂

  36. cassieflower says:

My large sample of Cuir d’Ange arrived today. OMG I fallen in lust instantly. It’s like leather that’s been soaked in beeswax. Straight up leather, quite linear. Thanks for the recommendation, Portia. I wouldn’t have sought this out without you.

  37. Kandice says:

Trying Smell Bent Snobirds today. Not sure what I think yet but will be baking a pumpkin pie soon for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving. If I don’t smell good at least the place will. LOL.

  38. VerbenaLuvvr says:

Today it is Chabaud Lait de Biscuit. I adore Chabaud scents, so delicate.

  39. crikey says:

L’Orpheline on Monday, which suited the mild but misty, rainy day. Bois des Iles on Tuesday. Tears of Eros today. There may need to be a bitey chypre to balance out all this lush softness.

  40. MmkInPA says:

More Bee’s Bliss. Trying to decide if I want to put it on my Christmas list. (The small bottle fits within the family grab bag budget!) Right now leaning toward yes.. I think this would be even better in the summer.

Made cranberry sauce today, dry brined the turkey. Making stock for gravy tonight. 12 people here for thanksgiving dinner tomorrow!

  41. Melanie says:

Different Company Osmanthus today. Its quite soft so have kept topping up.

  42. Marzipan says:

For those celebrating in the States- Happy Thanksgiving!

The kindness and generosity never ceases to amaze me! A fellow perfumista and good friend sent a package to my girls of all sorts of beauty stuff (GWPs) but she also included a mini of Tauer’s LDDM as she knew I had drained my sample, was itching for that mini, but am currently on a “no buy” due to family expenses. Wow! Talk about kindness…I am ever so grateful….and loving it as it is and will be my “scent of the very long weekend starting today”…..I put it on last night and can still smell it this morning….my scent eating skin has met its match. And it dries down very sweet on my skin and I am not picking up any dryness or cumin (yay!)

Safe travels to all who are visiting family and friends!

  43. fanny says:

Today’s choice is Kashnoir by Laboratorio Olfattivo, oriental woody is my favourite perfume category…!

  44. Cassieflower says:

I’m wafting around in Cuir d’Ange again. I just love it. Am madly excited today as I put in an order with Laurie at SSS. My friend is visiting the U S next week and she’s gonna be my scent mule. Wohoo. I’ll be trying two new to me scents, Equestrian and Bee’s Bliss. And replenishing my Jour Ensoleille (just a little bottle as it’s in short supply) and Champagne du Bois.
Happy Thanksgiving to your US readers. They’re probably in a tizzy in the kitchen around now 🦃 🥔 🍗

  45. SonomaVelvet says:

Hermes today, le jardin de monsieur li on one side and sur le toit on the other…. mmmm, Like them both.

  46. crikey says:

Miss Dior today (c.mid1980s edt version). Because Tara, Portia, and co.

Dinner with a friend this evening, she tries to identify a waft of scent near by (one of the waiters, Prada Luna Rossi, we think). So, talking perfume, she sniffs my wrist and announces with delight that whatever it is, this is the scent she most associates with me. Is it daft that it makes me ridiculously happy that–of all the different perfumes I wear–this is the perfume she identifies as mine?

  47. Melanie says:

Some lovely little STC & Decant packages in the letter box last night – which I didn’t think would show till next week- very exciting.
L’Artisan Passage d’Enfer today. Reminds me of the CDG Incense range but a little less smoky. I have sample of Kyoto to try so will compare.

Stand outs from last nights sniffing – BondNo9 Nuits de Noho and Montale Full Incense. Oh and some more LArtisan Vanille – yippee!

  48. Chocolate Marzipan says:

    LDDM for Black Friday

  49. fanny says:

L’Agent, by Agent Provocateur. Great winter perfume!

  50. Kandice says:

I’m wearing Bee’s Bliss by SSS. The opening on this is lovely. I will have to see how I do on the drydown as some of her scents don’t agree with me. (Although she makes my all-time favorite fig fragrance!). Some on here have wondered if it’s similar to Jour Ensoleille. I would say there are some similarities but they are not the same fragrance. The focus is drastically different in my opinion. I get more of the beeswax and warmth so far from this fragrance and less of the white florals. Either way, you should definitely try this one!

    • SonomaVelvet says:

Definitly on my to try list, but that will be a while because I don’t know anyone going to the states for a while. I do love my Jour Ensoleille but it’s the white flower part I like the best so hard to say how I’d do with less, leaves me very curious indeed.

    • Chocolate Marzipan says:

thank you! that means Bee’s Bliss must go on my must try list!

    • MmkInPA says:

I totally agree with your assessment. Jour is much more indolic. I found bees Bliss to be sweeter and definitely got the beeswax note. It’s summery but I think it is more year-round than Jour, at least for me.

  51. SonomaVelvet says:

Fracas today. I have a little rollerball of it, and for some reason when I use it, it seems to stay fairly close to me and not rise up and assault everyone else within throwing distance. Just a little blissful drift of white flower heaven drifting up to me when I move my hand. mmmmm
ooh, by the way, my le jardin’s that I was testing yesterday lasted an amazingly long time, I could still smell them on their respective wrists 9 or 10 hours later if I put my nose on my wrist. I was quite surprised as I tend to think of them as Colognish…I know, is that a word? I don’t know, I’m thinking maybe Monsiour Li might be edging out Sur le Toit by a hair in my heart’s desire.

  52. Ingeborg says:

I was in a rush this morning to get to a meeting, so forgot to put on perfume! Have put on some of Tauer’s scented body oil, Amber Flush, in the evening, relaxing scent and the oil is brilliant for super dry winter skin. Will add a spritz of Prada Candy before bed.

  53. Greg says:

Continuing to wear lots of hot weather fragrances. Thurssday was DS & Durga’s Italian Citrus. Friday I went for a tea scent that works well in the heat, Bamboo Harmony. Today I cracked open my Batucada (which I always mis-name Batacuda for some reason).

I met up with a friend today who was kind enough to give me a sniff of the three Tauer Stories fragrances. My impressions were:

Hyacinth and a Mechanic. Starts as a strong floral but seemed to develop a note that reminded me a little of Lonestar Memories. Quite odd.

He Left His Cologne in my Bedroom. I was certainly up for a cologne in today’s muggy mid-30s heat, and this is not bed. It’s a herby cologne rather than citrusy, so good for something a little different. Fading fast on me, unfortunately.

When We Cuddle. The name alone made me expect creamy, warm vanilla, and that’s exactly what this delivers. It’s a bit like Malle’s Dries Van Noten, but probably more a cool-weather scent.

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

I call it Batacuda too Greg. That’s why it was never a hint. The name was spelled wrong.
Excellent scent of a Splice ice block. MMMMMMM
      Portia xx

  54. Chocolate Marzipan says:

Pacifica’s Tibetan Mountain Temple today..I was reminded I had this one when I bought significantly reduced candles at the Pacifica website yesterday during Black Friday.

    • MmkInPA says:

I love this one. I wear it to bed a lot- I find it very relaxing!

    • Chocolate Marzipan says:

Oh and gobs of vintage Fendi which slipped out of my hands and the entire sample landed on the floor..quite amusing to see me rubbing my wrists against the hard floor to soak it all up 🙂

      I DO, however, smell delicious!

and thanks again, P, for this win!!! I am going to enjoy sampling my new goodies and hopefully will be more careful with the other four!!! (heck, at least it wasn’t the vintage Opium that got spilled!!)

      • australianperfumejunkies says:

OMG! You must have a VERY fragrant floor. I don’t reckon that scent will die off till spring CM, Original Fendi is big.
        Portia xx

  55. MmkInPA says:

Yesterday I had a weird craving for Fig so I wore Philosykos. It was sunny and warmer so it worked. For the next few days I want to focus on my neglected bottles. To be fully random I plugged the spreadsheet row numbers for my full bottles, minis and roller balls into random.org. The winner – Poison edc!!

  56. SonomaVelvet says:

Back in Dame’s amazing Narcissus today. oh my, this is a beauty. Love love love it.

  57. australianperfumejunkies says:

    Vintage Miss Dior parfum. MMMMMM

  58. fanny says:

    Boucheron – Trouble. :p

  59. Chocolate Marzipan says:

CDG Girl….Nice!!! and super cheap online if I ever decide that I “need” a full bottle.

  60. Greg says:

Final scent for the week was Herbas de Ibizia cologne. Very under-rated this scent, and I got it super cheap, so it is certainly a keeper.

  61. JanPeta says:

a scent by issey miyake- found in an Op shop for $2.00 Yay ! Reminds me of the many scents in my Grandfathers Garden sniffed in as a youngster while laying on the grass looking up at the starry night …. violets ruled with a hint of herby smelling Marigold in the background.
