SOTD 25 – 31 December 2017

I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.

SOTD 25 – 31 December 2017

The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:

  1. Thierry Mugler Womanity
  2. Oliver & Co Vaninger
  3. Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee
  4. Etat Libre d’Orange Yes I Do
  5. Evocative Perfumes Vanille Tonique

Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, will draw on Sunday.

Last Weeks WINNER: Jyotsna

  1. Laura Keller says:

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate and happy Monday to everyone. SOTD is vintage Cinnabar parfum again, because I love it and it’s what I’ve worn on Christmas since 1980. Later today or this evening I’ll change over to Lagerfeld KL.

    • Jyotsna says:

      Beautiful tradition.

    • Saffyishere says:

How many bottles of vintage Cinnabar have you gone through since 1980?

      • Laura Keller says:

Oh my gosh, between perfume and fragrance spray/splash I’d say…geez, an awful lot. Scores. In the 80s into the mid to late 90s Opium was one of my signatures and overspraying was the norm, so easily 2 – 4 2 oz bottles a year; since then around a bottle a year plus perfume. Now I have this awful mental image of all the Cinnabar bottles I slayed. I have all of the perfume empties and a bunch of the others in boxes in storage, like the souvenirs any good serial killer might keep. I actually never thought of it in terms of how many over time before, ouch! =)

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

WOW! I love that you’ve chosen and stick to a Christmas scent Laura.
      Portia xx

    • Neva says:

Both beautiful 80-ies scents. Lucky you that you still have the vintages. I’m sure your friends and family were delighted!

  2. JH says:

SOTD: trying for the first time Andy Tauer’s Rose Flash. I quite like it. A gorgeous jammy rose with lots of resins.

  3. Chez Marzipan says:

    Merry Christmas!!!!

Wearing a tiny drop of vintage Opium 🙂

Saving some skin for a test of Jo Malone Orange Bitters which is under the tree for one of the Marzipans (it was a gift with purchase that came with the Ginger Biscuit I bought her for her birthday).

and there are several chocolate covered marzipan logs under the tree for moi!!!!!!

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

Woo Hoo CM? You’ve gone totally glam for Christmas. was it perfect?
      Portia xx

    • Saffyishere says:

Have you eaten all the marzipan logs yet?
      How was the Orange Bitters?

      • chez Marzipan says:

The marzipan logs are gone 🙁 But in my defense, I did not eat them alone!

Orange Bitters is fantastic…bright fresh spritz of bitter citrus with a sandalwood drydown…I wore it once on naked skin and then tested it again on a base of sandalwood oil to give it some longevity. The next morning I could smell it on my sweater and it was sublime.

  4. MmkInPA says:

I chose my DSH holiday sample Hanukkah Canelle for this morning. It smells more than a little like a cinnamon apple candle. For dinner I will choose one of the other scents. Last night it was Dark Moon- Chocolate and spices. Going on the list for a travel size! Merry Christmas to all who celebrate.

  5. Gina says:

Yesterday, I wore Rochas Absolu in the morning then layered Mugler Pure Wood with i Profumi Dulce Patchouly and Reminiscence Essence. Not sure what today will bring — the smell of cooking in my hair and clothes?

  6. Lizbee says:

Merry Christmas, APJ! I’m wearing Lipstick Rose today, which I received as a gift from my brother (the only person in my family who likes to shop from a want list, as well as the only person in my family who seems to truly appreciate fragrance). Anyway, I smell glamorous. 🙂

  7. shiva-Woman says:

I wound up wearing Amouage Myths Woman am, but needed a spritz of something for the eve and went with Guerlain Encens Mythique. Happy Holidays to all!
    shiva-Woman recently posted…SOTD 25 – 31 December 2017My Profile

  8. Ceil says:

Happy holidays! I’m wearing Guerlain Guet apens today. Nice on this snowy day.

  9. australianperfumejunkies says:

Serge Lutens Clair de Musc. Going clean and fluffy for Boxing Day.

  10. Jyotsna says:

Wearing my mum’s Arpege. I love it so and miss her terribly. I think I’ll watch the cricket today and drink pots of tea.

  11. Melanie says:

    Bond no9 Chinatown for yesterday.
Today I’m thinking Mitsouko, or maybe last bit of Ambre Gris, or maybe Dame dark horse – decisions, decisions!

    • Melanie says:

Doh! Last minute change of mind – CdeG incense Jaisalmer. Need some smokiness today

    • Chez Marzipan says:

ooh, Chinatown..thanks for reminding me that I have a bottle of it floating around in my basement.

      • Melanie says:

In your basement! Oh my! CM I adore this one, got a tester online at a good price ages ago when I first come across bond no9, but since then it’s skyrocketed out of my reach! And the bottle is super pretty

      • chez Marzipan says:

I keep the surplus less used perfumes in the basement where it is cool to keep the perfumes safe. Actually Chinatown was won by a younger Marzipan several years ago in a draw. She owns the 100ml bottle but doesn’t use it any more and willingly shares. Do check out some of the online retailers as it often appears heavily discounted making it more affordable.

      • Melanie says:

Thanks CM, I love the fact that a) you have a basement and b) you have enough perfumes to store some in there! I’ll keep checking online and one day, the planets will align for me!

  12. crikey says:

Christmas smells good. I indulged in a luxuriously large dollop of 1950s Cuir de Russie extrait, which is still purring along smoothly twelve hours later. And the rest of our quiet, lovely day contained whiffs of the Egoiste I gave to my beloved, bacon sandwiches, a benzoin diptyque candle, warm cats basking in blankets by a radiator, and the glorious scents of saffron and lemon from the chicken tagine I cooked for dinner.

I hope that everyone who needs it gets a low key day of peace and comfort like this.

  13. Saffyishere says:

I’m having my Christmas today. Yesterday was a normal Monday Sloth Day
Heading to Melbourne….And in a change from tradition I’m wearing MANY spritzes of Estee.
Like Laura ,I have a tradition of wearing Winter Delice from 24th to 26th December, although only since mid 90s..or whenever WD was released lol

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

      Heya Saffyishere,
Woo Hoo! Estes seems perfect for a date in the big city. Enjoy Melbourne.
      Portia xx

    • Jyotsna says:

Enjoy Melbourne & your Christmas celebration, WD is a very Christmassy scent. Thanks for the wishes on my SOTD win. Portia and APJ are so generous. I’m in Canberra and don’t think Tauer ships here?

      • Saffyishere says:

You can order Tauer via Mensbiz ,in Sydney or Melbourne. I have enjoyed my visits to Canberra…twice in approx. 18 months….I live it up at the very posh Hyatt.

    • Laura Keller says:

I have yet to sample Winter Delice but I imagine it’s wonderful. I managed to overlook Estee (along with Azuree) for decades when they were so popular; I didn’t dislike them but somehow had the impression that they weren’t for me. It’s only in the last five years that I’ve fallen hard in love with both, but particularly Estee. What a wonderful thing to wear for a trip to the city – or almost anywhere. =)

    • chez Marzipan says:

      Estee!!!!!! Nice 🙂

  14. Cassieflower says:

I went with Miss Dior parfum. I needed its strength and good grace to get me through the day.

  15. Fazal Cheema says:

Mine was Shiseido Mai eau de cologne. It seems to have some similarities with classic Shiseido Zen

    • Laura Keller says:

I love to know that you’re wearing Mai! I never hear of it now. It’s got a quiet, woody loveliness to it that does bring Zen to mind.

      • Fazal Cheema says:

Oh you know about it 🙂 It has almost disappeared. You are so right, it is quiet fragrance. Even though my sense of smell is pretty good, I rarely smell it on myself even after immediate application.

  16. australianperfumejunkies says:

Tonight I wanted something to sit over the musk remnants of Clar de Musc so Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely was a perfect choice. It is.
    Portia xx

  17. Jackie b says:

Yesterday I grabbed Mohur because I was in a rush, but I remembered I wanted to wear Opus 1V because of the spice. Anyway my friend (who loved Ambre Eternel last Christmas) kept huffing my neck and telling me I smelled like Indian incense. Did have my Opus 1V later that night, so all good.
Today was Shalimar, gift of body lotion from hubs and then Montale Blue Amber. Death by vanilla!

    • Jyotsna says:

And what a way to go! I’m slightly obsessed by Montale – I keep reading reviews and save all the images to pintrest. To me, Shalimar is a wormhole into an magical world- my mum had it. mmm.

      • Jyotsna says:

I mean “obsessed with”, not by- gah!

      • Jackie b says:

Montale is wild…I went to a perfumery in Prague that stocked every single one. Apart from the sight of all the metal containers, I could hardly decide which ones to sample. Fabulous!

      • Melanie says:

I love Montale! I have Black Oud but the list is growing, so many choices.
Jackie b, I think I would pass out with joy if I went to a store that had them all!

    • chez Marzipan says:

While I don’t own any Montale bottles I love watching youtubers review them as they make that wonderful clinking noise which I assume is the stopper on the top.

    • Jyotsna says:

Like Melanie- I think I would pass out if I went into a store that had them all💕
I love the bottle designs and the notes… and, and, and oh my!!

(Note to Self: Put Prague on bucket list)

      • australianperfumejunkies says:

Jyotsna, you definitely need to see Prague. It is fabulous.
JackieB, which perfumery is the Montale one? I’d love to check out a place with so many to try at once.
        Portia xx

  18. chez Marzipan says:

On a base of Australian sandalwood e.o. Jo Malone’s Orange Bitters….later I may top it off with Chinatown.

    • Jyotsna says:

CM- where do you buy your e.os? Are you in Australia too?

      • chez Marzipan says:

Nope! USA. I usually buy my oils from Eden Botanicals. Not sure if they ship to Australia , though. I also like Now Essential Oils which I can get heavily discounted online or at my local health food store.

  19. SunnyDay says:

Today I’m in OJ Tolu. Coincidentally it did complement the turkey leftovers. 😋

  20. Jyotsna says:

Does wearing the gingerbread house count? My son smashed the house and we were all covered in pieces, icing and sugar jubes.

Today , a sprtiz of La Fille de Berlin- in honour of the incomparably glamourous Marlene Dietrich.

  21. Melanie says:

Today is Guerlain Vol de nuit evasion, from the lovely generous Portia. It’s very soft and different to my usual choice. I’m continually sniffing my arm. It could be bit cool for it as air con at its max as we are getting roasted again here in adelaide.
Have just tipped the last bit on so there it goes…

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

Woo Hoo! I love that you wore it all Melanie. It’s pretty, isn’t it? Not necessarily something you’d buy but good to have smelled.
      Portia xx

  22. australianperfumejunkies says:

Peau d’Aillures Starck green, swampy and resinous.

  23. chez Marzipan says:

Will be heading to our favorite local Indian restaurant today for an all you can eat buffet (look out here I come with my insatiable appetite!). My childhood friend of HALF A CENTURY is coming up on the train from the city to visit me and the Marzipans and we are going to eat up a storm. I will be wearing Berdoues Grand Cru Cologne Assam of India (lemon, assam tea, mysore sandalwood) on a base of my homemade vanilla body oil (marinated vanilla beans in sweet almond oil) to which I have added a good dose of sandalwood e.o. I think I will be properly scented for my excursion today 🙂 and for those of you not familiar with this fragrance do check out the adorable marching elephants on the bottle. I bought this bottle with a gift certificate said childhood friend gave me several years ago and I bought it blind because of the elephants.

  24. VerbenaLuvvr says:

Today it is Guerlain AA Winter Delices. I could really like this one overall, it is such a festive holiday scent, except for one nagging note that ruins the whole thing for me, still trying to determine what exactly is the culprit.

  25. Neva says:

Happy holidays everyone! I’ve been wearing my sample of Bracken Woman the last two days and I really love it. It may be the second best Amouage I’ve tried so far and that may be a problem for my wallet in the near future…I just love the longevity of the Amouages.

    • Jyotsna says:

Bracken Woman, hmm? Which is your favourite Amouage? Lyric Woman, I do like.

      • Neva says:

My favourite and the only one I own so far is Epic Woman. I also like very much Jubilation XV, Beloved and Opus I. Now that you mention it, I haven’t tried Lyric…will do so as soon as I’ll get the chance.

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

      Hey Neva,
If you love Bracken Woman then I better hunt it down and have a good sniff.
      Portia xx

  26. Sue Mills says:

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all. I can’t remember what I have been wearing, except for Serge Lutens Fleurs d’Oranger on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I do love it! So rich and strong, something to help me power through hosting my family and the other half’s on alternate days.

    • Jyotsna says:

Sue- Fleurs d’Oranger is my absolute favourite. I smell like a goddess when I wear it. You chose well. Happy Holidays.

      • Sue Mills says:

Thanks, Jyotsna! Isn’t it something? It’s my only Lutens – a blind buy of a partial bottle as part of a massive collector’s sale – and it’s just wonderful. Glad to find a fellow fan – and I’m sure you do smell like a goddess in it! Hope you’re having a fantastic day.

      • Jyotsna says:

Sue- do try Charlatan. There is sure to be a note in it that you will amplify beautifully. Let us know what you think!

  27. Jyotsna says:

This morning is Charlatan by Fort and Manle (thank you, Portia). Perfect for this day that’s heating up. Wearing a brightly beaded necklace that my son made when he was three. Tres chic 😊

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

SNAP! We are both wearing Charlatan.
Lucky you having a glam, kid made necklace. I bet it’s beautiful.
      Portia xx

      • Sue Mills says:

Wow, both wearing that wonderful Charlatan! I had just emailed a thanks to you, Portia, and I said in that I am not sure if I can wear it … it’s so immensely beautiful! I will take inspiration from the two of you, girl up and get some on tomorrow. I’m wearing Desnuda today and despite saturating myself with about 9 sprays, it’s just not doing it for me, but I don’t want to mess with Charlatan so I need clean skin for it, I reckon.

  28. Tiffanie says:

It’s a quiet day. I am glad for the post-holiday calm. Today is just right for wearing a few dabs of Ambre Narguile and eating a gingerbread cookie.

  29. Melanie says:

    Trialling Comptoir Vanille Ambre today.
Did have L’art Mure de Musc in my hand, ready for lunch date with girlfriend but she’s not well and we have to reschedule.
Comptoir not as vanilla as I expected- the Ambre a bit sharp first up. will give it a little while and see how we smelling bit later.

  30. Anna Maria says:

For Christmas Day I needed the strength of Christian Dior Leather Oud to get me through an evening with my In Laws! It worked, we had a nice evening.
Xmas eve to hospital visit my brother wore a fresh fragrance, O de Lancome.

  31. chez Marzipan says:

Heading out today in zero degrees fahrenheit weather so fortified with SSS Winter Woods…nothing woody about this on my skin…very sweet dense vanillic amber and I love it!

  32. Neva says:

It’s getting colder so I’m wrapped in Gucci Rush today. Interesting, it’s my most complimented perfume.

  33. Melanie says:

Trialling Tom Ford Oud Wood on left arm, Tobacco Vanille on the right.
Not as powerhouse as Black & Velvet Orchid. Oud Wood really light & mossy on me, I don’t get any oud. Yet! Tobacco V is winning but it’s only been 20 minutes since applying. See how we going in a few hours.

  34. Saffyishere says:

Hot and muggy today. Draining a 2ml decant of ‘something’ lol ,Sadly the writing on the label has smudged so I cannot read it.
I will take my bottle of green tea to work as a back up .

  35. Jyotsna says:

We tackled the beast that is the spare room. So until mid-afternoon, I was wearing dust, must and cobwebs. Now a spritz of Charlatan, as a reward, and I smell freakin’ delicious.

Hope everyone has had an easier day with most of the celebrating done.

  36. chez Marzipan says:

I had been saving all of my discontinued Pacifica solid perfumes (hoarding them in my basement) but younger Marzipan is wanting to only wear solids so I decided to bite the bullet and bring them up for her (they were all untouched). I am really miffed that Pacifica has not only discontinued these scents but also discontinuing making solids.

Nonetheless, today I am wearing the solid of Avalon Juniper- grapefruit, heliotrope and juniper…and it has an adorable gray owl on the tin and box.

    • Saffyishere says:

Wow that ‘basement itinerary is getting a shake up….Avalon Juniper sounds lovely. I took my bottle of Avon City Rush to work with me. It is a non descript scent… but did receive a compliment lol

      • chez Marzipan says:

I made a decision to NOT save anything and allow others as well as myself to enjoy what I have until it is all drained. Perfume is meant to be worn, not saved is my new motto.

My very first bottle of perfume (almost 47 years ago) was Avon’s Field Flowers. That bottle turned me into a perfume fanatic! I wore Avon for a good four decades but haven’t in the past few years as no one I know sells it (I used to work with someone who did). I love to see Avon mentioned as I feel that they make some pretty good fragrances at outstanding prices.

    • Jyotsna says:

Love some of the Avons. My mum use to get them and her ‘Avon girl’ was such a delightful person and so sweet to me. I can’t remember the names of most except Birds of Paradise.

  37. Melanie says:

I second you CM, don’t save it, wear it. Wear them all! That goes for nearly everything – shoes, necklace, fancy tea cup – whatever. We all know you can’t take these things with us. Of course we have our favourite scents but dont save them for a special occasion – wear it because you can. And because you deserve to! A lady at my work used to tell me off for wearing Florabotanica into the office. You should save it, she said. Save it for what? I love it and I love smelling it so i’m wearing it!
Enjoy life and your favourite things while you can ❤️

    • Jyotsna says:

I’m with Melanie. Wear them! You buy them to enjoy. The scent in the bottle is never as magical as the scent on YOU.

Melanie – I have worked with people like the work lady. People vary, I’ve learned to ignore them.
And I love being here with my fellow perfume-lovers.

      Have a scentalious 2018, APJers!

    • Saffyishere says:

Indeed….Sometimes a ‘special occasion’ is being able to wake up and get out of bed. I work at a nursing home, so I see many people at the end of their lives. Family bring in a few ‘special pieces’ to display in their rooms….There are lots of tea/cup/saucer trios, and a few Royal Daulton figurines. Not many perfumes. Wear what you want.

  38. Saffyishere says:

Wow 24 hours ago I was whinging about it being too hot and had air con on. Today it is raining in bursts and I have the heater on HIGH!!!!
Again working this arvo ,I need a scent to give me comfort and ‘warmth’ Uhummm..what to wear…decisions decisions….Thinking a few good blasts of YSL M7 Oud Absolou might just do the trick.
    Have a fabulous Saturday ,all.

  39. Kate says:

Sorry for being away, y’all. Life, family, work. Been a busy few months.

I looked at a newly acquired bottle of L’Eau No 5 and realised it has been pumped a lot this week. I don’t even remember when I wore it. It is quite a lovely scent; just so quiet and gone after an hour. Still, a gift is a gift.

Many of Teone’s got a workout too. Antarctica has been a nightly must. Ritual has been my knightly armour to face the world and peopling. Dragonboat was worn to work on the hot days. I also got to know Juniper Bay.

I had a few sprays of Jardins de Bagatelle the other day, and I wore a surprise blind buy – Red Door Aura. It was dirt cheap and I had plenty of points to redeem. Not bad, for the hour it lasts.

Wishing everyone a marvellous New Year. xx

    • australianperfumejunkies says:

      Hey Kate,
I am loving Antarctica, WOW, it’s so dense and intricate.
Gladd to see you back after your mini hiatus.
      Portia xx

      • Jyotsna says:

Can’t wait to try some (thanks, Portia). Just the very name delights me. I’m a winter gal and this heat is a killer.

  40. chez Marzipan says:

Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit Solid perfume from the solid stash I brought up from the basement. This one reminds me of the eldest Marzipan when she was 13 years old and wore this the entire winter. Thanks to all who reminded me to enjoy what we have and save nothing….perfume is meant to be worn and I am enjoying revisiting these fragrances.

  41. Tiffanie says:

Saturday chores are mostly finished, so I’m quietly dabbing, sniffing, and dabbing again from a sample vial of Bogue MEM. I love the lavender and how the scent veers off in unexpected ways.

  42. Saffyishere says:

Amazing.. the last day of 2017!!! What scent will get the ‘last bang Guernsey”? Today it is warm again.. glorious blue skies and sunny yellow sun….So drumroll please…..
Carnal Flower and Study #17 combo

  43. Melanie says:

Blue skies and sun here too! Heading off to Adelaide oval for the cricket (& fireworks ) for New Years. Was going to wear Stash but given it’s a bit warmer than I expected i’m going for my favourite Montale Black Oud, sitting over Montale vanille absolu, which i put on this morning and is floating around me like a little fluffy cloud – have a lovely night everyone xx

  44. chez Marzipan says:

SSS Champagne du Bois today to ring in the new year! (granted I will probably be asleep at 7pm 😉 !!)

  45. Neva says:

Today I will celebrate with my good old classy friend – Armani by Giorgio Armani.

  46. MMKinPA says:

Starting my resolution to work through samples- this morning I have nomenclature ad_rett on one arm and Acqua di Parma Peonia Nobile on the other. The nomenclature smells like old books on me. Not in a good way. The Peonia is a pink fruity floral, pleasant but not my thing. Happy New Year!!
