Hello Fellow Fumies,

Every Saturday we have a Question, an idea purloined from Olfactoria’s Travels. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it is a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:

  1. Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur EdP
  2. Parfum d’Empire Fougere Bengale
  3. L’Artisan Seville a l’Aube
  4. Lolita Lempicka EdP
  5. Rouge d’Hermès

Saturday Question: Which Serge Lutens is your favourite?

Serge Lutens, Uncle Serge, Lutens or however you know the house has been a groundbreaker. Held firm in the hands of Shiseido yet Creatively Directed by Serge Lutens: a mystery, enigma. Serge Lutens for most perfumistas is a slightly mad, eccentric perfume god whose genius was stewed fruit and pushing notes as far as they could go when being created. His new releases were, for decades, hyped and hyperbole-ed out of the stratosphere and still managed to blow us away when we got our sniff on them.

Sadly it seems his star has dimmed somewhat in the 21st century but the company is still putting out interesting works. I think it has been subsumed into Shideido completely now and Mr Lutens himself is less involved but that is hearsay, not fact confirmed.

My Answer:

This is an easy one for me. Though I have FBs for a lot of the Lutens line, there are only five that get heavy wear. Datura Noire, Arabie, Chergui, Fille en Aiguilles and my favourite Five O’clock au Gingembre.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Tea, bergamot
Heart: Ginger, cinnamon, woodsy notes
Base: Cacao, honey, amber, patchouli, pepper

The swirl of spices and dry tea that float over a honeyed woodsiness with a hint of patchouli is so wearable in warm or cold weather. It’s fragrant in the first hour but not outrageously so and softens of beautifully to a lightly sweetened woodsy hum that lasts for hours. It can be casual or dressed up and never seems out of place. Not one of his more challenging works, that’s fine by me. I want to smell good and Five O’clock au Gingembre can be relied upon every time.

Saturday Question:

What 3 Things Are You Grateful For 2017

Gratitude. I think consciously saying Thank You for things reminds us how lucky we are. It’s easy to make a litany of complaint but it’s also easy to find things that are good. In the same way we thoughtlessly complain about lifes rotten moments, we need to thoughtfully be grateful for the good.

My Answer:

Most obviously I am grateful this year for Jin and our friends. They are the soul of my life, the blood that keeps everything functioning. Without their daily injections of time, fun, conversation, advice, reassurance and love this life would be worthless.

Work. Yes, I know that’s not most peoples gratitude point but I am so grateful for having work, helping others have work and all the fun we have while doing our job. Sure, like every job there are nights when I’d rather hurdle in a ball than leave the house but seriously, I have one fabulous job.

The climate here in Sydney. We have four seasons but none of them are dreadfully extreme. Though this year has been a little dry mostly we have a good balance of rain and sunshine. Even in winter we can get out and about, catch public transport or drive, meet friends and basically live. I love how much light we have and the length of the days. We are so lucky here and I’m totally grateful.

Saturday Question:

What Scented Gift Are You Hoping For Under The Tree

It’s Christmas (and many other giving times) right now. Aside from our religious or secular beliefs we can all pretend that these times are about giving but seriously, it’s all about what you get to open. Come ON! Admit it. Even if only to us. We won’t judge. We are all greedy AF too. Well maybe not that extreme but wouldn’t it be nice to get exactly what you dream of for once?

So here’s your chance at a fantasy gift receiving. What do you get? Imagine yourself unwrapping it, the sheer incredulity that your crew got it SO right.

So let’s all give our one true hearts wish for fragrant gifts. Who knows, maybe they’re reading…..

My Answer:

Aedes de Venustas Eau de Parfum Aedes de Venustas FragranticaFragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Rhubarb, vetiver, red berries, tomato leaf, incense, green apple, hazelnut, honeysuckle

The original Aedes de Venustas fragrance. In the purple bottle. I’ve wanted it since it was first talked about on the blogs and for some reason I never bought it. It was a glorious revelation when released, we all swooned. The bottle, the scent, everything was just right. To have this under the tree would be un-freaking-believable.

Saturday Question: My Three Next Full Bottle Purchases Will Be?

Do you have a wishlist? What’s at the top currently? Are you saving for some special things or are they going to be an impulse buy at the mall, or trolling the discounters late at night? Do you have separate wishlists for different things? Vintage, expensive, bargain, discontinued?

My Answer:

Still trying to work this list down to zero but instead of concentrating on fulfilling my list I tend to get distracted by new and shiny things. Especially if there is a sale or someone is selling a half bottle on the Facebook pages.

So here are my current Top 3 most wanted in bold. I can’t believe that Grandiflora Michel still isn’t in my collection, it’s a freaking masterpiece. SO, by New Year 2018 I’m going to try and own these 3 fabulous fragrances. Wish me luck.

Saturday Question:

What Are Your 3 All Time Fave Movies?

OK, totally off topic but I feel like I’m in a film rut. Basically I watch a couple of oldies that I adore and the DC and Marvel series. It’s been a long while since I bothered to see anything much at the movies except the Kingsman sequel (awful but hilarious) and some dreck on planes.

A bit of background history. When I came back from the UK at the end of 2015 Mum kindly offered to have me back at our childhood home. My sister had moved out and taken all the VHS Video Cassettes except a very limited selection. Mum and I only really like a few of the movies but two of them could always be relied on for entertainment on so many levels. We must have watched my first two choices 40 times each or more in the 6 years we had before she died. I still love them and can watch them again and again.

My Answer:

The Colour Purple:

The story of Celie’s life, a coming of age. Every time I’m completely and utterly captivated. Every character built and portrayed to perfection, cinematography, music, everything. Love it.

Stage Door:

Rich girl Katherine Hepburn wants to be an actress so she slums it with the rest of the wannabe starlets in a hostel for young actresses. It’s a star studded cast with young Lucille ball, Ava Gardner, Ginger Rogers and a slew of others. Some of the funniest lines, arch zingers and some tender moments.

Muriel’s Wedding:

You’d think because I was part of Priscilla it would be my favourite Australian film, nope. Muriel’s Wedding is freaking hilarious. Everything about it is perfection. It was shot in and around Sydney in places I used to haunt, has the most spectacle;ar cast and is a genius gem of 20th century Australian comedy.

Saturday Question:

What Would You Ask For If You Knew The Answer Was YES?

Saw this one a while ago on a Facebook page and it tickled my fancy. This week we don’t have to keep it fragrance related but I would ask that we keep Medical or Relationship Saves, World Peace and Money out of the equation. Let’s make this fun, interesting and personal. Maybe something you’ve wanted but only as an “if I win the lottery” kinda thing. You might have a secret dream that you could make reality. Could there be a different work direction you could have taken that seems far more appealing now? A trip, extra child, bathroom renovation, perfume cupboard, backyard studio or granny flat, live in the country/city, study law or have your favourite chef in to cook for you every Sunday. Seriously, anything

My Answer:

I would ask Jin if we could move to a small town and have a garden. In the garden there would be enough room for an entertaining verandah, pool, vegetable patch, chicken coop, Hills Hoist clothes line and dog run.

Why a small town? Well, I’m not talking outback Australia with under 1000 people. Maybe I mean a larger town. It has to have the amenities: Supermarket, Hospital, Main Street, nearby Airport and all Utilities. Part of me likes the idea of having so much less invested in our bricks & mortar, the extra space and a vegetable patch to dig in. Doesn’t need to be a very big patch either. Room for a couple of fruit trees, some spinach, potatoes, peas/beans and herbs. Chooks have been on my wish list since childhood and I love the idea of the dogs having an easy care run.

Saturday Question:

What Do Family And Friends Think Of Your Perfume Obsession?

A particular longtime friends discovery of my addiction and subsequent question this week got me thinking. I’m pretty sure that loads of our friends and families think we are fully bonkers and are flummoxed by our irrational perfume (and often all things fragrant) hoarding collecting. Do you mainly get intrigue, outrage, bewilderment, support, drama or any kind of reaction to your passion? What are some of the hilarious, upsetting, ridiculous or damning reactions that you have met while being part of this amazing world trend?

The hoarde in 2013

My Answer:

My perfume obsession has baffled so many friends and family through the years. Fortunately Mum was always very supportive of all my quirks and wrapped it all up into a huge blanket of acceptance. I think her laissez faire attitude of do what you want but don’t hurt anyone rubbed off and set me up well to deal with and ignore the worlds need to have people work and live within parameters.

Most of my mates have known me to get very involved in whatever takes my fancy at a given time and are quietly surprised fragrance has lasted so many decades in all different levels and forms. Having discovered the online perfume worked, the boards, blogs, niche stores and discounters I became a man obsessed. It was around this time that Jin and I watched the film  Julie and Julia and the pilot light burst into a bonfire and then a conflagration. As Australian Perfume Junkies started my reach and scope became instantly much broader and suddenly I had access to the world. The blog has added a sheen of respectability to my outrageous frag spending and continued my trajectory of try and buy.

Jin doesn’t have anything but support for my habit, though he sometimes wishes we could land in a city without me having a bunch of frag meetings organised. My mates are intrigued and I’ve made a plethora of new friends too.

Last week a guy who I worked in bars with through the 1990s and have remained mates with got in touch and gave me some of his current loves and fave notes and asked for recommendations. I gave him 10 from across the price board. He was disbelieving at some of the prices but happy for the info.
