I received a text from my daughter last week: “Stole two spritzes of your new perfume. I feel like I could conquer the world and just hop on a plane and go anywhere I want.” No fear of her turning into a perfumista then!

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Raspberry, ylang-ylang
Heart: Rose, cacao pod, hinoki wood, tuber
Base: Vetiver, sandalwood, musk, amber

Oxana at Bloom Perfumery, London tucked a big sample of this into my bag as I left her shop. I had never heard of Phaedon, although I know Pierre Guillaume of course.

From Phaedon: A Gothic composition, as opulent and dark as the shadow of the Papal Palace looming over nations and centuries… The carmine red of the papal stole is conjured with a fleshy, spicy rose facetted by ylang-ylang and raspberry. In the heart notes, waxed woods, cocoa bean, black truffle and earthy smoky vetiver lure us into the private apartments of the Supreme Pontiff. Gilt moldings and religious ornaments glint in the firelight while gray tendrils of smoke rise from a censer burning sandalwood chips mixed with musk and amber.

So you know what – it´s pushing 40°c here in Austria so let´s skip the usual banter.

Rouge Avignon shocked me with it´s splendour. It´s unusual and beautiful enough that someone may well ask what you are wearing, but you don´t need an instruction manual to understand it. It’s a gliding, seamless scent and it will be a stunning fall to winter fragrance, but it is beyond fine now too. I feel an addiction coming on.

Rose. Red. Opulent. Velvety. Ylang ylang. Spicy rose. Earthy rose. Gorgeous, succulent, but never gourmand raspberry. It is so vibrant and cerise and strangely pretty. But don´t be fooled, it mingles with amber and vetiver and sandalwood and musk. To all that you may indeed add a little smokiness. Dark and sparkly. The fruity note is always there though, hiding in the shadows. I could see Ann Boleyn wearing this. Quite medieval.

  2. In general I dislike fruit notes in perfume, but in the past, when I had a collection of David Austin roses, there was a dark red that had definite notes of raspberry and black raspberry when it bloomed. I fantasize that this perfume would recover that exquisite rose.

      It took me a while to get into rose too. In fact I only wear rose at home, in the evenings, to end the day. Rouge Avignon doesn´t quite fall into that category …… other things going on there too, But all smooth as a baby´s bum. 🙂 Love CQ xxx

  8. Firstly, I follow APJ by email. Secondly, here in Sweden, the air is becoming chilly, the days are shortening and before long autumn will be here with winter “hot” on its heels. I’d love to have the opportunity to test ROUGE AVIGNON during this seasonal transition. The description of this perfume evokes sensations of mystery, opulence and darkness but also ones of hope,simplicity and brightness. The same as after the long winter months, there is the renaissance of spring. Finally, thank you all at APJ for the lovely posts that I so enjoy reading.

  26. I follow by Bloglovin. I do love perfumes that conjure up another era and transport you back in scent; it’s about my favourite thing that a perfume can do. I’m sure this feeling is partly responsible for my love of Mitsouko! Also, in the best possible way, this description made me think of another of my favourites, Black XS for her – only richer, less sweet and more grown up, the gothic lolita girl grown into a woman of the world – so I think I would love it…

    • Ruth! This does not smell like raspberries that you eat. You have to smell it to see what I mean. The rapberry note is always there but it´s not like Kool-Aid! Ha ha.

    I would love to try Rouge Avignon because I’ve been getting into the nuances of rose lately as they’re flowering, spicy, citrussy, or red-fruity, they are all unique and deep. I love darker earthy rose but have very few rose scents…. There is a rose that grows a block away that has the most distinct raspberry note I’ve ever smelled in rose an I was just wishing I could bottle it. Hopeful that Rouge Avignon is like that married to sandalwood and cocoa. Also have never tried Phaedon but love PGs…

  33. Rose has never been my thing, but I have recently come to the conclusion that maybe I am just biased and should try to test out some quality rose perfumes. Surely a note so lauded cannot always smell like that horrible shower gel I had when I was a child. So I would love to test Rouge Avignon! I follow with bloglovin.

    • Nadja!! hahahahahahah. I know what it is too be biased, because I often am. I usually put it down to the fact that my head is stuck up my backside. LOL!! I am not too into rose, and as I have said before only wear it in the evenings at home. Howver this is something else and smells absolutely nothing at all like a childhood shower gel. Shudder.

    Here’s a list for my ‘floating’ reasons:
    1. I am a sucker for raspberries. Now is their season up here in Bulgaria and I am in a bliss. Hoever, I still haven’t found the perfect perfume with real juicy raspberries that is not a dummy-Barbie-doll scent, synthetic or just blurred by other non-describable ingredients. Well, I looooove Fields of Rubus by Kerosene but it’s not juicy raspberry there.
    2. Earthy rose without patchouli – that has to be smelled! Half of my fume collection is rose-headed, so I badly need to be surprised! Well, I haven’t tried Mohur by Neela Vermeeire and I was really pleased with L’Eau de Chloe and Dahlia Noir L’Eau. I crave aromatic darkness!
    3. I said it before – anything from Pierre Guillaume fascinates me! Well, PG’s Bois de Copaiba was a bit of disappointment, but I am a devoted fan to His Gourmand Majesty!

  37. Roses are among my favourite flowers but I didnt like to wear rose perfumes until I got some samples mentioned on the Perfume Posse Guide to Best Rose Perfumes. I’ve been smitten with the darker, noir, newer blends and have a running ‘must try’ list. This will definitely go on that list! I follow by email.
