Hello APJ,
In a recent APJ post, Peety, the new fragrance by O’DRIÙ, drew critical comments from almost every direction.  Some people were amused or repulsed by the idea of adding their own urine to a perfume. Others were wary of O’DRIÙ’S marketing strategies.
Today I am excited to have the opportunity to ask questions and speak with the perfumer himself.  Thank you so much, Mr. Pregoni, for visiting us here at APJ.

In addition to a perfumer you are also a poet and a performance artist. O’DRIÙ is obviously selling fine fragrances in the luxury market. How do you reconcile the constraints and often-conservative outlook of luxury and niche with the freedom and innovation that is performance art? Have you ever had to “reformulate” your perfumes or your aesthetic to conform to the image of the luxury goods marketplace?
I believe that luxury or, if we prefer, the extreme version of tastes towards high cost products, is a phenomenon which is still fighting against illuminist’s wastes. Illuminism is the background of the same cosmopolitism; on the other hand it has drawn the attention towards the ideals of freedom of thought giving to France the cultural leadership in the western area.
Since then, the rational approach has been adopted for the aesthetic experience also, trying to bring back the reflection on the subject of the canon of beauty under an objective condition. This has led to a lack of aesthetic values and, as an effect of this, also led to the idea of “taste” as merely subjective.
So, subjective “tastes” could even sublimate the “classical” beauty… preferring something ugly but with the power to awaken emotionalism in the human soul.
The current, motionless fashion world is imbued by this idea of “taste” as it was an ultimate achievement which no one could leave from. By the way, Andy Warhol pointed out that the “pop” taste (the masses’ one) was going to be the new rule in taste! Well, fashion world seems uncertain between two opposite roads: persisting in a rigid vision about luxury or embracing the ultra-commercial consumerist horizon. As a Nose and as an artist I’m trying to go back to the subjective roots of taste, and to propose them as the real meaning of luxury.
I regenerated my thoughts starting from non western anthropological and cultural concept. From these ideas Peety has been conceived: an exclusive and luxury perfume, which (after ten drops of pee) becomes a not reproducible and “su misura” one; a creation which has truly “pop” marketing characteristics, as well as primeval, superstitious or magical meanings. Peety is my contribution to luxury and art: a fetish perfume!

Peety’s classical profile and the suggested addition of urine can’t help but bring to mind the portraits of Robert Mapplethorpe and the controversial 1987 photo series Immersion by Andres Serrano . Have you been at all influenced by the work of Mapplethorpe or Serrano?
Peety, the very first perfume which becomes a “su misura” after ten drops of pee, has given me the opportunity to put together cultural and artistic concepts, using perfume as a language, with an unpredictable “pop” energy.
Just a few day ago, Andy Cohen –a TV top manager and talk show host- collected Lady Gaga’s pee making a perfume from it, I think that it stems from a sort of viral spreading. Peety is someway a threshold: before of it, the creation of perfume using some pee was simply unproposable, after Peety it doesn’t create sensation anymore, it has become an anti-establishment paradigm. At the same time Peety consolidated a different kind of approach to smells and to their ancestral meanings. Peety is the past and the future of perfumery: it was launched in September 2013 and already it’s a part of perfumery history.
Each artist, somehow, plunges its roots in other artists issues. I have to say that I feel myself close to Urs Lüthi’s provocative work, and to its very first body art concept, full of irony and without signs of tragicalness.
Peety rejects at the same time the mawkish and sexualizing clichés of todays perfumery; it looks at the outer world, to the wide set of visual stimulus which continuously surround and tempt us, what ones could call “the urban folklore”.
This is why the Peety advertising generates a linguistic chaos: it embodies masculine and feminine, the Virgin and Lawrence of Arabia, Rudolph Valentine and a nun too.

Could you describe a few of the fragrance notes and a little about the chemistry of Peety? How did you know that urine would work better in this composition than in another?
Peety is a powerful and unexpected perfume. It opens itself with some liberty tones, between yellow tangerine, sweet orange and cinnamon. Then it changes, and we enter in a dance room with tangos and milongas, tobacco notes, castoreum, woods, pink pepper. Later, it finds the levity o a rose kissing a woman neck, or the elation of the jasmine, under the dark elegant black of a fine man.
An exotic smell of vanilla emerges from moss and patchouli, with ethnical stains which are made ancestral by the Tonka beans.
But the only way to achieve Peety’s complete roundness is adding ten drops of pee. Water, salt and the acid elements in urine react with alcohol and perfume ingredients; they slightly oxidize the perfume leading to some carboxylic acids generation, and this gives an original, unrepeatable “stain” to each Peety.
Now, one can smell fruits traces, while some animal notes give room to more pungent perceptions which complete and “close” the perfume. It’s important to say that, in no way, adding pee can link the final result to what one has eaten. Nevertheless, a strong psychical element exists when one uses this “added” version of Peety. It’s something like an unconscious self-satisfaction; it seems that this feeling modifies the way our brain controls secretions, changing our body odors, and making it more attractive.

Last question: I know that I can purchase samples of Peety at Surrender to Chance and from your O’DRIÙ websites. Will your fragrances be available soon from other retailers, online or otherwise?
Really? We don’t have any distributor for our samples! The only chance to have Peety and Eva Kant samples is to order them on our odriu.com store.
Indeed, Peety and Eva Kant samples are sent with an art work from me: it’s made in a very limited series, only 100 pieces. As in O’DRIÙ samples tradition, the cost is a very affordable one.     Have you tried Peety yet? It’s a fantastic smoky amber-y leather, with a warm, citrus spice basket and rose up top – I found it to be in the same vein as LDDM by Tauer, but with a greater evolutionary development.
    Eva Kant is also incredible, one of my favourite releases of the year. Kudos on getting this interview arranged! xxx

    • Oh and personalise? Of course :’) Although I have to admit it’d be after a night of cranberry juice and salad. The residue of wine, coffee, soda and junk food is still a creepy thought, more so than the fact it’s pee. But Peety’s great on it’s own so either way…

        I love Peety and am wearing it right now but have yet to try Eva Kant. The perfumer mentions that what is eaten before should not have a negative effect but I am still a little reticent to personalize. I trust the perfume but not my pee!

  11. I once won a sample of Peety, which I dug out and drained yesterday evening after reading the first part of your post. Loved it, loved it a lot, which is hard to reconcile with my need to spend less on perfume in 2014, so I hope I am a winner! At this point, I would definitely try personalizing. As I read the perfumer’s remarks about it, and read comments online from those who tried it, it sounds as if it makes a genuine difference, and one that I might like even better.

    Not sure if I’d personalize. Would definitely try on skin a few times first.

    I think asparagus, medications, other things would affect the chemistry/scent of urine quite a lot but maybe in such small proportion it would mostly have some sort of acid reaction in the perfume. But then maybe a different ingredient would work also?

  19. I am so curious about this release and I enjoyed the interview. I am amazed that this is so polarizing among the fragrance groups, especially considering the nature of ingredients in vintage perfumes. I would want to compare “customized” vs. no additions. I would split the bottle (half into a decant) and do a smell/wear test. I follow by e-mail, bloglovin, and FB.

  20. I follow APJ through my blog. I have to admit that I’m cynical about the whole mystique-of-urine thing, which seems to surface periodically and predictably in the art world. Why pee in this perfume specifically? Why do you need instructions or permission from the perfumer to do so? Why not piss into all of your perfumes and “make them your own”? Why not shit in them? Why not spit or cry tears or drip sweat from your armpits into them? As long as we’re dealing with “taboos”, why not add your semen if you’re a man, or your vaginal secretions if you’re a woman? This would be the ultimate in DIY perfume. Who knows? You might make a masterpiece.

    It seems that peeing (or depositing any other sort of bodily excretions/secretions) in a place that’s generally considered inappropriate will get (mostly) positive attention as long as it’s labeled “art”. If you’re just homeless, drunk, high, an exhibitionist, or have some other logical or illogical rationale that is not supported by a publicity campaign, it might get you attention on a small scale, but it might also get you arrested, fired from your job, or worse.

    If you’re going to pee in your perfume, just make sure you eat a lot of asparagus first. It should make for a heightened experience.

    After this tirade, please add me to the drawing. I’m told the perfume is quite good on its own.

      I agree with much of your “tirade” but I find this perfume beautiful on its own. I have yet to add urine to my samples, perhaps because I am still haunted by references to the work of Andres Serrano.

      Regarding Peety, I really think there is plenty of substance behind the “sensationalism”. Much to my own embarrassment, I spent several years of my life involved in what was truly vapid performance art that was almost totally void of substance. I was relieved to see that there is real beauty at O’Driù as well as informed creativity. The not quite sensational marketing got my attention but the quality of the perfume is what sold me on the product. Peety is much more than just throwing paint at canvas.

      I am looking forward to the blogpost!!

  24. I wanted to hear more from the creator on this one I do admire his energetic and prolific work. Yet even after this fantastic interview I remain quite unconvinced by the words. It all reeks of taking the piss, and not *just* literally! To some it sounds *so* shocking, but surely adding the piss is chemically not dissimilar to the effect of the little glow of perspiration we add to all the perfume we wear…

    Still, descriptions of the scent sound more than solid, and of course, as an experimental soul I’m more than curious to try this both untainted *and* personalised. I would keep a little decant of the untouched even then, cos I love a side-by-side comparison and always love to play with and observe the power of suggestion.

  25. Hi Azar, and thanks for following up on your previous post with such a wonderful interview. I quite liked the idea put forward that “My need was to depict the inner universe of the human being, going beyond every denomination, in a non-aesthetic and non-retinal way”. Great concept.

    I also really like Ellen Covey’s comments above, fleshing out the why and what if aspects of the approach to personalisation. And I giggled at the asparagus approach – thought had crossed my mind! 😉

  26. Hee, I must confess I haven’t added pee to my Peety sample yet! (Thanks Azar!) As you know, it reminds me of being on the dairy farm and I’m happy for it to remain that way. I guess if you’re wearing perfume and you perspire then you get a bit of your own odour mixed in with it anyway. 😀

  29. Azar – thank you for the interview. What an interesting artist.! I will be interested to see what he comes out with in the years to come. Regarding this fragrance, I would love to be entered in the draw. (I follow via email.) I’ve heard the fragrance is beautiful in it’s “virgin” state, and I believe that’s how I would wear it.   30. I’d have to do a side by side comparison, I’d always be left wondering ‘what if…’ otherwise. I liked Ellen’s comments. I, too, am dubious about the sensationalistic aspect of this perfume. But I’m heartened to hear that even without any additions it’s actually good.
    Even though Angelo says what you eat and drink beforehand makes no difference, I’m not sure I can believe that. Even just your hydration levels would alter the concentration… And as for asparagus…
    Hmmm, maybe I’d have to do more than one decant to test the various additions!

  31. Hello Azar, Great to ‘meet’ you. Great interview, with this creator of what can only be described as an “intriguing’ scent. Initially I thought..Ewww putting urine into a scent, but then after recently securing a decant of Secretions Magnifique {supposedly containing semen and blood} I thought..why not urine? Why not indeed ,so yes I’d personalize it. And I may even ‘disobey’ instructions one time and use 9 drops or 15 drops of urine ,instead of the prescribed 10. Another thought, each person’s ‘dropper’ may contain more or less i.e. what measure is considered a ‘drop’? Too many questions ,sorry!!! In summary, I follow via Twitter Facebook and now email.   32. i follow apj by wordpress. The ingredients in Peety sound right up my alley, so I suppose personalizing it with my own “ingredient” would truly make it a “me” scent, although I would probably do it to half of the perfume, thus making only 5 drops of pee necessary.

  36. Fascinating and provocative interview that stirs hidden, but deep and universal, motivations. I love the primal ideas about magic and the power & danger of body substance that are embedded in the story of this scent. Makes me want to read anthropologist Michele Stephen, as well as Mary Douglas’ classic “Purity and Pollution”, all over again.

Besides the fact that I think it would be kind of gross it seems strange because your pee doesn’t smell the same all the time. What happens if you eat asparagus? Obviously you wouldn’t want to use that day’s pee. That being said – I’m sure others have done it and liked the results. It’s just not for me… -Lauren

  42. Great interview!! Thanks! I would try both ways and would have fun shocking my friends (well, some of them) by wearing the “tainted” version. I also love the various comments folk have had with regard to personalizing ‘fumes in all manners. As for asparagus, actually not everyone can smell it in urine. And for the name, we had a parakeet years ago called Petey…so there’s my association 🙂

  45. Hiya, APJ: I’m a new follower, though I stop by regularly just to read up. Great interview.

    I’m endlessly fascinated with the idea of urine in art–or even generally, bodily excretions, hair, etc. etc. It’s not my aesthetic choice, but I respect the statement. I recall a passage from Patrick Suskind’s “Perfume”: “Every human being smelled different…And yet–there was a basic perfumatory theme to the odor of humanity..: a sweaty-oily, sour-cheesy, quite richly repulsive basic theme that clung to all humans equally…”

    I guess my point is that the odors of sweat, BO, urine, and feces accompany us, and, at times, we’ve found their animal equivalents and gilded the flowers of perfumery with them.

    As for ‘personalizing’ Peety–I’m with the group that would personalize a decant and leave the rest ‘as is’ so I could compare the two. It really would depend as to when the urine was added, too.

I don’t feel that the hullabaloo around the pee aspet really matters much as the bottom line is that the product stands on its own, but any marketing startegy that can generate this much interest is successful in my book. I’m firmly in the divide and pee camp – I might even divide into several deviants because it would be interesting to see if there was any difference between morning pee or evening pee etc. I too would think that how hydrated you are would also make a difference? I agree with Portia – it would be a hoot to see people’s reaction to Peety, but I would find it SO hard not to tell them what I was guffawing about! I,d love to be included in this generous draw – I follow by email.

  48. Great interview, Azar ! I follow through wordpress and facebook. Would I personalize or not ? I would make 2 versions, a virgin one and a personlized one and wear the one I like best. This might seem an odd question but does the perfume stay good with the pee in it ? I am willing to test that 😉

      Edith was also concerned about the longevity of the personalized version! I don’t have an answer for that since I’ve only used Peety neat. That brings up another question. How long should we expect our perfumes to remain unspoiled? … You are so IN! Have a great 2014!

  49. I’m a fence-sitter on this one. I would personalise half of it and keep half as-is for comparison.

    Of course we personalise every scent when we spray it on our skin anyway, so maybe I’m just being squeamish.

  50. Great and insightful interview. As for personalizing it, I’m leaning towards not doing it. Like some people who have commented, I’m scared it might spoil the perfume or at least make its shelf life shorter.

    An interesting interview, but…ewww. Nope, I spend time & effort on NOT smelling like bodily excretions so I definitely wouldn’t be binding them with perfume & splashing them on myself, even though I’m doing the whole raw diet thing at the moment I can’t see that it would be pleasant. But, each to their own lol.

    I would “personalize” Peety for sure! I quite like the idea of further embracing perfume in relation to the body, as this relationship is already implicit!
