Cookie Queen’s Fragrant Year 2014

The year started with a visit from Portia Turbo-Gear and Michael dropping by and staying for a few days. We had a blast and they got to come along on the Salzburg Cookie Run.
They headed off for a week´s travel around Europe and we got to meet up again in London, for the now near legendary Blogger´s Meet at the fabulous Bloom Perfumery in London´s
Spitalfields area.

Val, portia, Michael Austria 2014

Meeting so many bloggers in the flesh was nothing short of amazing.

APJ Bloom 2013 #2

Tara of Olfactoria´s Travels and Vanessa of Bonkers About Perfume and I have since become proper friends and I flew back to the UK in July to meet up with them again. This time there was only the three of us which which was a little less hectic than the Bloom Party and we got to know each other better. I adore them.

CQ Vero Milan 2013 #2

I went to Milan for the Esxence, The Scent of Excellence Fragrance Fair in Spring and to the Pitti Fragranze in Florence in autumn. These events are within driving distance of my home, which is consolation for having to spend a large part of my life speaking German.

I took regular trips to Vienna to meet up with Birgit and Sandra from Olfactoria´s Travels. Intimate fragrant breakfasts together.

So dear readers, a you might imagine I have got quite a stash of samples, and the truth is I have more than enough and would like to give some away.
Living in the heart of Europe allows quick access to many of the new releases and I hope that someone, one of you, can get to sample something that you find difficult to get hold of.

My favourite perfumes this year? The three Rozys from Vero Profumo. Now there´s a surprise..

January will mark two years since meeting Portia, who has become such an integral part of my life. Nearly two years as Cookie Queen. What have I learnt? That when pushed,
people will swop most anything for cookies!

Have a peaceful Christmas season. Take some time out to smell the coffee and be thankful.

  1. Great article Val; you’ve clearly had a great 2014.

This year I encountered some great perfumes and had my first encounters with niche houses such as Heeley and Arquiste. I was very pleased to find a fragrance that my perfume-hating wife really likes: Ophelia. L’Etrog Acqua was my favourite new perfume this year; it’s destined to get a lot of airtime this summer.

But without doubt my favourite fragrance find was the full and unopened bottle of 1950s era Miss Dior I found in an antique shop, still in its hounsdtooth pattern box, and with its black bow attached. Seeing that on the shelf made me more excited than anything else I found this year.

    I follow via email.

  8. This year, I discovered Neela Vermeire Creations, her Mohur Extrait is a beautiful scent to wear in the cold winter months here in Michigan. You feel as if you’ve stepped back into a more elegant time when you apply it. Another discovery this year was Divine Life Perfume, I adore Roses, and she has created some of the most perfect Rose scents I have ever come across. Thierry Mugler was another recent discovery for me, Alien wears soft on my skin, I love it. I follow you on Bloglovin

Though I am not much fond of coconut in perfume. Except for Jeux de Peau…
I think I found some Holy Grails this year. Well, yes, several 😉
Iris de Nuit – Heeley, Calling All Angels – April Aromatics, Violette Sacree and Rose Irisee – Au Pays de la Fleur dÓranger, Unknown Pleasures – Kerosene (yum!), Antonia and Black – Puredistance, Monocle Sugi – Comme des Garcons, Sortilege – Le Gallion…Surely, there are more to add, but I don’t want to be tedious.
I follow by email, and on the FB page. Thank you for the great generous draw! That’s a gorgeous holiday feast for a fumie!

Just bought myself Champs Elysee after reading the review on this blog. Portia is right, you can get it at amazingly cheap prices. Guerlian is one of my favourite perfume houses ever since my then fiancee bought me Jardins de Bagatelle 25 years ago at almost exactly this time. He had to fly to New Zealand and send it to me as he got it duty free. He bought me another bottle this year to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary! We had to order it since very few stores stock it now. So even though I have only ever had 2 bottles in my life, it is a very special perfume to me.

    Happy Holidays to all!

  31. 2014 really has been a humdinger of a fragrance year for me. I became a
Member of Facebook Fragrance Friends, and that has changed my life in so many positive ways. I have met the best people through this lovely group, including Portia and you Val! I am so grateful. And I have been introduced to countless beautiful scents. There are many standouts (Rosae Mundi, Rose 31, Liqueur Charnelle, Kiki VdE, etc, etc) but the one that made me literally have to sit down from being bowled over was Rubj. Rubj, in all it’s forms, is pure full-spectrum loveliness in a bottle. Thank you Vero Kern!

  34. Hi Val – I follow on WordPress and Twitter and will do a retweet. Thanks for the draw. Your pic with Vero is outstanding and that blogger meet up in London looks brilliant. I’m pretty sure I follow nearly everyone in that picture so quite good to see what everyone looks like. My discoveries have been Rozy EDP (but I haven’t tried the other versions so will probably love those too) and Anubis which is a dark beauty. Also have discovered Shalimar – the current version which I love. I probably won’t try the vintage anytime as you can’t buy and sell Guerlain on eBay in France – highly annoying! And to add to that I really have been liking Angel Les Parfums de Cuir which I actually end up wearing quite a bit at home.

  37. Hi Cookie Queen,

What an exciting year you have had!

I have been very short of money this year, so I have only bought a couple of very inexpensive fragrances. I love violet perfumes and ordered a 100 ml bottle of Violette from Molinard’s Les Fleurs range. That would be my favourite for the year. It is a lovely sugary violet that reminds me a bit of purple jelly beans (no bad thing), and it is close to the old violet and vanilla scent of Cyclax cosmetics that I adore.

Recently I found a range of inexpensive fragrances at my local Terry White chemist by a company named “Jeanne en Provence”. As the weather was so hot, I was drawn to the “Pear and Apple” eau de toilette. It is very refreshing and lasts at least a few hours on me. At only $16.95 for a 60 ml bottle, I can afford to spray this one a few times during the day.

    I follow APJ via email.

Thank you for the generous draw and thank you to all who keep APJ such a fun place to be. My fragrant highlights of the year was meeting Portia and many perfume lovers in Myers Sydney.
I really really liked Journey (W) by Amouage and my find for the year is Black by CdG which, while not terribly original, is very distinctive. Fingers crossed for Santa to bring me a bottle.

This year I have found so many true beauties, it seems almost impossible to choose which one was “the best”… There is Tolu, Rose de Kandahar, Montale’s Oriental Flowers, Terre de Feu, Bois de Gayac, Oud Imperial, APOM, Phul Nana, Moon Dance by JHAG, Dzongkha…
Much to my surprise I must confess BK Criminal of Love is the winner. A warm, rich and distinctive perfume, I love it.

    Following by email.

Have a wonderful December, all!! 🙂
