I picked up 140 kilos of chocolate on Monday morning. The beginning of a batshit crazy week. As many of you know, or will have gathered, I make cookies for living. Sounds cool huh? Indeed it has opened many doors and I am thankful. I have been supplying a chain of groovy, funky restaurants for the last four years. There are stores in Cologne, Munich, Salzburg and Innsbruck. I work in a kitchen too small to swing a cat in, located at the back of our bike shop. Glamorous does not spring to mind. The company has ventured into the coffee shop business and asked me if I would like to make the cakes and muffins for them. Starting with one store, a second coming along sometime over the next six weeks or so, and a third at the end of the summer. I thought it over for a couple of weeks and decided to give it a go. It all sounds so exciting on Facebook, or when talking to people. I seriously think it might kill me.

I am sat here banging this out after the opening of the store in Innsbruck yesterday evening. I am determined to have this post went to Portia before deadline. That is one of my new goals. (In-between having my head stuck in the oven, I will NOT be late any more!) I just got back from delivering 4 cakes and 50 muffins and you know what? I am really scared that I cannot do it. I think I have bitten off more than I can chew. Don´t tell anyone. I shall see how it goes over the next few weeks and if I can’t do it without having to check into a loony bin for a break then I shall go back to just doing their cookies.

Whatever! Let’s celebrate by sharing some of the fabled Tihota from Indult. What could be more appropriate in a “baking post” than vanilla huh? I love vanilla. Indeed I work with three different types, Mexican, Madagascar Bourbon, and Tahitian. The Tahitian vanilla is extremely expensive, has a wonderful cherry aroma, and I use it sparingly. Indult´s Tihota uses Tahitian vanilla. Tahitian vanilla is truly the most fragrant of all vanillas, a fruity floral vanilla. Tihota means “sugar” in Polynesian, so between sugar and vanilla you nearly have a cake. Tihota is a proper vanilla scent. A vanilla perfume for vanilla freaks. It has a heavy sillage and despite being sweet and musky, it is quite adult. It is very rich and caramelly. If you don’t care to wear your vanilla this won’t change your mind, and you will have to enjoy vanilla in your baked goods. I cannot imagine there is anyone out there who doesn´t like vanilla in one way or another. Is there? Tihota has epic lasting power. Notes seem to be musk and vanilla although I have seen tonka bean mentioned. (Musk is funny stuff though. I get it more in the cooler months in Tihota.)

Tihota reached cult status over the years, especially when it was discontinued. Fortunately though, the Indult collection is now under new ownership and the fragrances are once more available. They are presented under their original formulations, as created by Francis Kurkdjian.

    • I´m hanging. Not about to give up. It took me three days to get over getting home at 02.30 i the morning after the Innsbruck opening. Seriously, I am getting old. I just cannot hack the late night thing anymore. Perhaps if I had two days to recover on a beach. MdO´s vanilla is great. Hugs. xxxx

  4. Damn straight who doesn’t love some vanilla?!!! Yep I’m a vanilla freak, I wear it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And then to bed. My fave would probably be Micallef’s Note Vanillee.

  5. I have yet to try Tihota, but I hear big things! My favourite vanilla fragrance is L’Artisan’s Vanilla Absoluement, also known as Havana Vanille. While my SO is not a fan, it’s by far the most original vanilla scent I have ever tries.

    • Hi Morrigan. I haven´t tried the havana Vanilla, although I would love to. It sounds fab. That is definitely worth a try – but it will not turn a vanilla hater into a lover. No way. 😉 XXX

    DNEM but i LOVE vanilla fragrances. Today I was awash in Un Bois Vanille by Serge Lutens and I enjoyed it so much I’m wearing it to bed.

    I can see why it’s some people’s ultimate vanilla even if there is no love lost between me and Frank 🙂

  9. A room „too small to swing a cat in“, haha, I’ve never heard that expression, so funny! Are you allowed to tell which restaurants in Munich you supply with? I am a native of Munich and even though I live in Berlin for a very long time now, I still feel like a Bavarian (Haimatpatriotin) and love the shops and restaurants there.
    After reading your luscious review I must go and find my sample and wear it (but just one spritz since I remember it as being really rich).

  10. I am still searching for a vanilla that I actually want to smell like, but have read good things about Tihota.
    I also like the benzoin drydown of Ambre Fetiche which reminds me of a dry vanilla.

    Who better to recommend the perfect vanilla than a Cookie Queen (THE Cookie Queen)! I usually inhale rather than eat my vanilla. These days I am inhaling Dame Perfumery’s Black Flower…a very powerful Mexican vanilla and my current favorite. Regarding baking: Do you have or have you considered a trusted assistant? A lavish spray of Tihota or the Mona di Orio Vanille, a lovely vanilla-flavored cheesecake, a vanilla bean used to stir my tea, a furtive huff off the extract bottle as I pass through the pantry…it’s all good. Very good.

  21. I’m in love with two polar fragrances: not vanilla in the lead – LouLou and definetly vanilla-centred Musc Maori. Vanilla in PG is soft and very misty for me. In LouLou I feel strong, dry and sharp vanilla. Anyway, I think sweet perfumes must be dramatic and a bit vicious for not to be insignificant.

  22. Love getting your emails. My favorite vanilla is steamed Vanilla milf with mountains of fluffy whipped cream. When it comes to wearing vanilla, I veer right to Vanille Intense by Parfums De Nicolai, or lately Tauer’s Vanilla flash.

  29. I follow APJ through WordPress (bloggers unite!) and I love vanilla in so many things, but especially ice cream. Currently loving Andy Tauer’s Vanilla Flash, for all its weirdness, but my so-far-favorite has to be Profumum’s Dulcis In Fundo. I would LOVE to try Tihota, please! It’s legendary. 🙂 Best of luck managing the higher workload–FWIW, I think it’s always great to challenge yourself even if it’s terrifying or you realize later it was a bit too much to handle.

  31. Vanilla has been a journey. I finally realised I didn’t mind it with Guerlain Spiriteuse Double Vanille, but then I discovered Mona di Orio’s Vanille. Fabulous.   33. Oooohhhh. I would love to try this! It has been on my wish list forever, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I didn’t think I liked vanilla in perfumes, but then I happened to try Guerlain’s Spiriteuse Double Vanille and fell in love. To date, this is my all-time favorite vanilla. The sweetness is cut by the more boozy notes. I didn’t know Tahitian vanilla had cherry notes in it. I love cherry added to anything foody but am curious to see how it works in a fragrance. Thanks for the opportunity to sample this.

    On another note, I have every faith you can pull this off. I guess the question is whether or not you want to. Is all the work worth the end result? Since everyone raves about your cookies, I’m sure the cakes and muffins are equally delicious. So your customers will be happy, but will you?   34. I follow by email, and I love vanilla in all my desserts. In perfume, I like Vanilla Tonka (I also, incidentally, love root beer floats). My favorite vanillas so far though have been the ones where the vanilla note kind of sneaks up on you, like Phi une Rose de Kandaher. Thank you!

  35. Vanilla is my favorite smell and taste. I’ve literally put vanilla extract on my skin just to smell like it in a pinch. You could say I’m a little obsessed ha. Vanilla-y custards and of course perfumes are probably some of my favorite ways to indulge in it. I follow by email 🙂

  38. Tihota is good stuff indeed. I love Eau de Missions lately for a budget friendly vanilla.
    I love vanilla perfumes but eating vanilla is rather enjoyable as well. I’ve got a thing for vanilla paste actually. I’ll eat that stuff straight from the jar.

  40. Hi Val! I love vanilla ice cream and I used to make a cheesecake with a vanilla topping. Very 70s, but it was good … I follow by e-mail, and I don’t really have a vanilla scent, although I am a devotee of SL Un Lys which I have read has vanilla undertones (or base, or something). I have no analytical skills, but whatever’s in it, I love it. If it’s not to late, please armadillo me! (A sentence I never anticipated typing, but I rather enjoyed it.) Chussis!
