Reading about Rose Musc on the Perfume Posse made me laugh, Tom is hilarious. There are a LOT of rose fragrances in my collection, from my all time favourite rose Mohur by Neela Vermeire Creations through a bunch of Parfum des Rosines, a few oudh/rose frags, and some from independents, designer and niche. There’s something about roses that call to my soul. The ultra smooth, modern sheer heft of Voleur de Roses by L’Artisan Parfumeur to the dark, bitter, unfettered and pulsating Ballets Rouges by Olympic Orchids, I love them all. So if Tom rates it, though not for him, then I thought I better gran some and get it on me.

Sonoma Scent Studio gives these featured accords:

Roses, Roses, Roses! big a full and fabulous. Blooming dark pink roses with their sweet and spicy, tart apple and plum skin overtones. You know the ones? Maybe 7 to a stem, fabulously opulent looking, as big as your hand and when you touch their open flowers the petals float off the bush leaving a carpet of cerise, as if the bush has been bleeding. Rose Musc is all of that and more.
The labdanum/amber warms the rose and bolsters it, keeping it vegetally sweet and engaging. Where Ballets Rouges is darkened by twig, branch and humus Rose Musc is lighter, smoother and more regal. You still know you are wearing an independent perfumers fragrance, there is none of the pasty and pastel hum drum of the department store designer, nor the delicately overproduced loveliness of the designer prive lines. Rose Musc is adamant, strident and over the top gorgeousness, an oldie-worldie rose that has a Mucha picture as its focus. I chose another Mucha picture that I think captures the soul of Rose Musc even better.

Laurie Erickson at Sonoma Scent Studio writes: …I wanted Rose Musc to be a true rose softened by a powdery musk base. I like the innocence of the rose paired with the dusky labdanum and musk. The blend has a very light touch of animalic notes.

I wear Rose Musc on occasion, one of the few roses I do wear. I really adore it but my mother wears Velvet Rose and they are close enough that I check over my shoulder for Mom all day when I have it on. Also, Laurie’s roses have huge sillage and a heckuva half-life so I have to be up for the commitment. That said, the SSS roses are the best true roses that I have tried. I prefer them to Mohur, even in the extrait, and every other current rose I can think of. Yes, there are a couple of roses that I love as much but they are discontinued; Fresh Bulgarian Rose which the internet doesn’t believe existed was a lovely thing and the original Evelyn was beautiful, but both were lighter realistic tea rose scents which nobody seems to do anymore.

Hi Portia,
My all time favorite rose is still the old La Rose Jacqueminot by Coty. Second place goes to Al Jazzab by AgarAura followed by Ballets Rouge, The Rosarium and Rosa Ardiente (not always in that order). I also love one current mass market rose, Calligraphy Rose by Aramis. For the total rose experiencpersian or bulgarian rose oil. Sonoma Scent Studio roses sound lovely. So many roses, so little time…

You should get a commission, Portia! I’ve just ordered Rose Musc based on your description. Can’t wait to try it. My current rose faves are Amouage Lyric Woman, and A la Rose by Kurkdijan. And Azar above has given me a whole list of other roses to try. Long live rose fragrances, they are as varied as they are beautiful. Much aloha, Fifi

You know, I love the way roses smell but I haven’t found a ton of rose frags that I really love yet. I once tried to swap for some Mohur, but unfortunately got swapjacked! Haha, bad luck. I enjoy Miss Charming, and I have Rose Velours but something in the drydown starts to bother me… hmm and I like Marni… Clearly I need to try some more rose fragrances!
