1. Funnily, I’m not one to buy back up bottles.. I prefer buying only one bottle each of what I want and need/love and not having many of the same bottle and that extends to everything else I purchase because I dislike clutter. Unless it’s a different formulation or edp/edt and parfum its fine but I can’t bear to have, for example, 3 Chanel no.5 edp sitting there. I suppose because my collection is always growing and I know there will always be more perfume out there to love.. Well that’s the fun part anyway hehe.

   • Very wise and careful collecting, Latia. Maybe it is not too late for me to do the same!
     I have to admit that I am one of those people who have several bottles of Chanel No. 5 perfume just sitting around, but that is not entirely my fault. At least one of the bottles is a cherished gift. Also, I don’t consider any of these as true back-ups because they are from different years and are all different sizes (Am I rationalizing?).

2. More than I’ll get through for a long time! They make handy ( and lovely) gifts. I feel a sense of dismay when I see large bottles of perfume. It’s not a selling point for me.

     These extras do make great gifts. Re the big ones: I think the whole point of any large bottle is nothing more than the sheer size of it. Anyone who buys a biggie knows that there will always be some fragrance left behind negating any notion of a cheaper price per ml. Personally I love taking the 10 ouncers out of the dark every once in awhile and simply watching light reflect through the jus inside.

3. I normally dont do backups because I haven’t finished any bottle since the late 1990s. That said, I do have some backups of vintage Vol de Nuit, Mitsouko, Chamade and Mystere to name a few because I just dont enjoy the current formulations.

   • Yes, BBMc! The reformulation issue has played a big part in the creation of my backlog of back-ups. Discontinuation is also another factor. That being said, I believe the number of identical extras in my collection is a direct result of my fear of tackling a complete inventory of what is in perfume storage. Do you have an inventory?

     • Hi Azar, no inventory for me but if I can get my hands on vintage, I go for them. My other problem is I have issues unsealing bottles. I normally buy a decant or sample, try them and decided I need a FB and so get one but ended up the FB never gets opened as I have moved on to others. More than 50% of my collection are still sealed. One day…

       I am a fiend for vintage and have had to address the frozen stopper issue many times. Please check out my recent January 25th post on PerfumeNW. Perhaps you will have some success with the method I describe there for opening stuck stoppers. It works for me! Good luck!

     • OH DEAR! Perhaps I misunderstood? If the stoppers remain unsealed because you don’t WANT to open them or you simply want to keep you back-ups pristine…well, that’s a completely different story. I understand but I can’t help you with that one as I rip into boxes (with the exception of sealed back-ups) and open perfumes stoppers with abandon. However, I do save all boxes and sometimes even the cellophane. That is yet another problem for which I should probably get professional help. 😉

4. I spray the heck out of myself daily. I usually wear a morning and night fragrance. I only have one backup bottle of Santa Maria Novella’s Melograno since my original bottle is getting low. And, I have a few versions of Bal a Versailles and Le Dix. I don’t buy backups.

5. Holy Cow. Nope. No back ups. I use perfume in the mornings and that is usually it. Lasts all day and into the evening as a rule. I have a very small collection and seldom add to it. On saying that I did just get Chanel Misia. Hugs. xxxx

6. I have very few back up bottles. 3 vintage Dana Tabus, 1 back up of Yves Rocher Rose, 3 back ups of McQueen My Queen, Idylle and L’Instant backups, 1 each and that’s it. But I have 108 bottles total, enough to last me til I die!

7. Wow – you have some collection of perfumes Azar! I, myself have no back-up bottles (and only have a small collection of bottles). As a rule, i normally have a few sprays in the morning, and perhaps around lunchtime i may have another spray if i feel lacking in the lovely smell dept. Unless i am going out after work, i don’t spray any more (unless i am doing some perfume testing in the evening).

     I have to tell you that the photo and you-tube in this post is NOT about my stuff but looking at it was kind of a wake-up call for me! If I never buy another bottle of perfume in my life I will have more than I can ever use. I have some real beauties that have only been sprayed once or twice. Instead of backing up any reforms I should just go use what I already have 😉 BTW, have you ever emptied a bottle of anything?

   I have about 35 bottles and wear one in the morning and something for afternoons. Maybe bedtime scent. I bought a backup of Ambre Fetiche because it was super cheap on special. Oh, and have an extra one of vintage L’Heure Bleue. Because.

     I always fall for the “super-cheap” thing. I almost feel obliged to buy something that is 75% off the original price – even if I have yet to finish the sample – yikes! 😉 Here are a couple of questions: Do you have a current inventory? Have you ever emptied a bottle of anything? I know I’ve asked these questions before but I’m trying to get motivated and take control of this situation. Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to “just say no”!

9. Hi Azar, I can actually say that I have no backups. My skin eats up my perfume so I spritz (6-7 spritzes) in the mornings and in the evenings. Even with all the spritzing I still have far too much perfume and need to work on reducing my bottles even further. ?

     • Hi Azar. I have used up so many bottles but recent ones in the last three months (winter) include, Guerlain Cuir Beluga, Guerlain Gourmand Coquin, Tihota and Vol de Nuit EdT. I have never been one to keep the empty bottles, but I may just do so with the blue Guet-Apens bottle. I decided to use the perfumes instead of hoarding them and am very grateful to have some extra space now.

10. Oh wow, TWO backup bottles for each? I thought I was the ruler of backup bottles… nope. Guess you get to hold the scepter. 😉

    Well, okay, I *do* have a couple of fragrances for which I have more than one backup. (blushes) (eyes Azar’s list and reconsiders the blush) Those are generally the ones which are discontinued and which I really enjoy: Cuir de Lancome and Crown Perfumery Crown Bouquet, plus my favorite-ever Le Temps d’une Fete. I do have two backup bottles also of Shalimar Light and L’Arte di Gucci, but to be honest, I’ve been thinking that one backup is enough and I should divest myself of the other. -Oh, and I do have a couple of bottles of vintage No. 5 parfum that I really should find new homes for.

    I don’t think my five 7.5ml or smaller bottles of vintage Jolie Madame parfum count. (Do they? Nah, I don’t think so. Altogether, they hardly add up to ONE bottle.)

    There are others I have one-bottle backups of: Silences pdt, the first Ines de la Fressange, Soivohle Centennial… oh gosh, I really don’t want to enumerate them. I should get rid of some of them, probably – I do sometimes have nightmares of getting run over by a tractor and my kids having to get rid of most of my perfumes.

      I think we are in the same boat but you sound like you are in denial 😉 !
      Here is my rule: 7.5s DO count as back-ups in perfume/extrait and similar concentrations but not in EdTs, EdPs and colognes. My questions for you is: Do you consider different size bottles of the same formulation to be true back-ups? Also, do you have a current inventory?
      I can certainly relate to your nightmare as I have often wondered what my children will do with the perfume, the shell collections, the porcelain, the music and musical instruments…and Gomez the parrot, as there is a very real possibility that he outlive both B and me.

    I actually only have one back up bottle – California Reverie, which I got mostly because it was a good deal and my bottle is about half done. I am currently searching for 1 more back up bottle, Douce Amere, because its one of the first fragrances that I’ve found I actually crave. So that’s a new one for me. On the whole I don’t think I’ll be a big BUB person, because honestly I barely even use the bottles I have. I rarely find scents that speak to me enough for me to return to them frequently. It’s kind of sad!

    I can definitely understand getting back ups of the discontinued and hard to find fragrances, as long as you think you may actually wear them 🙂

      I have numerous scents that “speak to me” but I still don’t get back to them very often, simply because there are just SO many of them. The ones I really love I will back up for fear I will never be able to get them again in the original (or favorite) formulation. But in general, I think that my obsession with backing up a fragrance has more to with with taking advantage of a bargain or collecting bottles than the fear of reform.

12. Hi, I confess that I’m a hoarder too. But I have back-up bottles only of vintages: Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander III, YSL Nu, Shiseido Feminite du Bois. The problem is – you never know what’s going to be discontinued and that makes me nervous and I keep my finger on the trigger. In my case it’s definitely an obsession. On the other hand, I wear them for special occasions and for myself when I get in the mood so they will probably last a lifetime.
    After the eighties I have never found any perfume I would love unconditionally and wear it the whole day round until I empty the bottle and that makes my collecion growing each year. I sometimes organize a get together with my girlfriends where we bring along perfume we don’t wear anymore and we have a perfume swap. That certainly saves money.

      AH! The “H” word finally surfaces. Now that you brought it up this is indeed “hoarding!’, whether it be bottles or perfume. And, like you, I haven’t emptied a bottle for many years. A friend and I are planing a “reject perfume swap meet”. I’m wondering if the participants will want to take home anything that the others bring? 😉

      • Don’t worry, it works perfectly. My girlfriends aren’t so much into perfume like myself, but I always find something I can use, even if it’s Arden’s Green Tea which I like in the Summer. And of course, they love my neglected babies 😉

13. I don’t have any back-up bottles either. It takes me forever to use up a bottle and by the time I do I might not want any more of that particular fragrance. These days I buy the smallest bottle possible, and if I truly love it I’ll buy another.

      I will try to follow your example – but I keep thinking of price per ml! When a sample of something I like (but not necessarily love) goes for, say $8, and 100 ml sells for $140 (discounted, of course) I am still tempted to go for the big bottle, even though I may never actually take advantage of the lower price per ml by finishing the large size. Your plan is so sensible and in the end, cost effective and certainly worth a try!

14. I have precisely 1 backup – Tihota. The first bottle I bought was a partial, and I used it with abandon, never knowing it had been discontinued. Then, it was brought back to all sorts of happiness in the frag world. I promptly bought my BU bottle, and have continued to spritz happily.

15. So far I have only one true back-up bottle in my collection. Last summer I fell deeply in love with Slumberhouse Rume which was a limited edition re-release and reformulation of a discontinued older version. So since I adored it and it wasn’t going to be around for very long – and probably would be impossible to find ever again – I went ahead and bought another bottle. I also have two bottles of both Slumberhouse Sova and Dior Homme Intense but each bottle is a different formulation, so I don’t think that quite counts.

    I think the only situation when I would consider a back-up would be with a discontinued, reformulated or limited edition top 10 favorite.

    I usually wear two sprays in the day and then maybe one or two sprays to bed. My bottle collection is on the small side (around 20 30-50 ml bottles, mostly extrait or edp strength) but I also have a numerous collection of small decants and samples. Between that and my fairly limited consumption I do think I have more perfume than I’ll ever be able to use up.

      I just read your lovely Leather Sample Revisited review and noticed that you are a hoarder of samples! I’m encouraged that you are able to admit it and that you can use the “H” word with abandon. In the past I have hoarded samples too and tended to spray them only a couple of times each, fearing I might like one so much that I would have to buy the large size. These days I am simply using up my samples! At least I know I CAN use up and finish these small sizes (if I try really hard)! This realization is SO liberating! 🙂

      • I treat my sample collection kind of like a reference library! 😉 There are a scant few that I keep because I love them and am waiting for an opportunity to get a decant… But most of them I keep because it’s a scent (or note/family/genre) that often gets discussed or compared and I feel a need to have a sample around so that I can refresh my memory of it from time to time. When a sample is gone it’s gone though, beyond as a useful reference I can’t say that I feel attached to them at all.

17. Azar, As you know I’m a hoarder of samples, but I try to limit it to one of each. I do keep a log of all my samples and file them in boxes after I’ve tested them. I literally have thousands of them, but rationalize it as an “educational activity”. I try not to buy bottles larger than 30 ml, and most of the bottles that I have are smaller than that. Nevertheless, my small bottle collection has reached hoarder proportions. And don’t get me started on shoes!

    • Exactly! Samples are educational and therefore useful to have around! 😀 I’m not in the thousands yet (WOW!), but I’m slowly but surely getting there. Currently there are about 500 samples in my perfume reference library. 😉

      Oh no! The shoes! I never throw them away unless they are totally worn out, but, surprisingly I do wear out a few out from time to time and stock back-ups for those styles. When I throw out a real beater I can literally pull another identical pair off the shelf. I don’t re-stoc these until I’m down to the last pair on my feet. But sadly there all the other styles that are rarely worn and never donated or other wise disposed of. They continue to pile up. Sigh.

      Regarding the samples: I have always admired how you handle your “educational activity” – so organized, so efficient, inventoried, logged in and out with comments. So well done and probably tax deductible too 🙂

18. Holy cats and crackers! I just checked my extensive collection and found not ONE backup bottle. I do have a lot of ‘iterations’ of vintages, though. But, like you, it would take several lifetimes to get through even half of it!

19. What a flipping huge collection!! I don’t do back ups but I have some in EDP/EDT/Extrait. I guess my collection is pretty small and I’m still trying to reduce numbers of bottles. Having said that, if I really love something and if it’s discontinued, I might think about buying a back up. 🙂

20. Oh my goodness. I just wrote about how I’ve cut back on purchasing and hoarding tendancies. I’ve been wondering what is happening to me. I’m going through a very slow perfume phase and some days I’m forgetting to even wear it. But I actually don’t have one backup bottle of perfume. Not one. I am thinking about getting another Fourreau Noir as it’s one of my favourites, but I’m finding it more and more difficult to part with the cash!! I have to say I loved this post Azar.

This month I’ve decided that every time I’m tempted to buy yet another full bottle I will go down to the perfume storage and rummage around for something that I haven’t used for years. This experience might be almost as good as (or perhaps even better than) purchasing something new – but I wonder how long I can maintain my resolve? They don’t call us Perfume Junkies for nothing!

21. For me, I think backup bottles are a product of fear. I generally keep backups of most things, i.e. when there is a sale on toothpaste, I will buy a few to save a dollar. I will never understand why companies reformulate a perfume that is selling in the bucket loads, and put the exact same name and packaging on it. Perhaps to save money? In any case, back to the topic: I don’t see any issue in having backups, especially if it is something you use on a regular basis, or something that doesn’t come any bigger than a 30ml or 50ml. Even if you don’t end up using it, or have buyer’s remorse, perfumes are still a fantastic gift to give!

      We seem to be on the same page with the back-ups. I take advantage of sales to stock up on all kinds of things. I like to be able to just pop down to the storage room for whatever I need, be it perfume, shoes, toothpaste, tomato paste or whatever. I know part of this “stocking” or “hoarding” behavior is based on fear, but convenience and frugality are also involved…with the exception of the perfume back-ups, that is. 🙂

22. Hi Azar. If you can afford it, why not. I don’t have many backups. There are a few I really love and want to have extras in case of reformulation. I have different formulations and different bottles of vintage Joy and also vintage Shalimar and vintage Bal a Versailles, among others. Thinking about it, vintage is where I have most of my backups, for obvious reasons. Perfume should be a pleasure – collecting, hoarding, sampling……..I think it’s all good.

23. Only one backup bottle (Lutens Chergui), however, more full bottles than I will ever use 🙂 Don’t even want to mention how many samples and decants I have. However, all of these contribute to my love for library-style experience or knowledge collecting! (If that makes sense) I could say I am trying to behave, but, right now, I have the Luckyscent page up with samples of Hiram Green and Ginestet on order. So, maybe not really trying to behave 🙂

      When I was digging around I found an 8 ml decant of Tabac Blonde that still had the tape on it. I really have to be better about actually opening some of these things! Like you, I often find myself on the Lucky Scent page with the intent of buying even more individual samples or sample packs. As far as samples go, though, I need to remember that I really prefer the little sprays. The pop off tops on those little 1 ml vials can be quite annoying. I find I rarely finish these samples, simply because the tops are NOT user friendly.

24. I like backup bottles. I have a few and have been thinking of more. I know I have plenty of perfume but having more than enough of my favorites makes me happy. I’ve had plenty of times where I loved a perfume, finished the bottle, bought a new one and was hugely disappointed because its not the same anymore.

      I totally agree with your take on back-ups. Having additional bottles of my favorites always gives me a nice, warm, secure feeling. I don’t like things to change and these extra bottles postpone the day when I will have to deal with the unpleasant facts of reformulation.

25. None, I can barely afford perfume in the first place, let alone a back up. I spend enough time saddened when something I have been saving for is reformulated before I can even buy one (Jubilation 25). Can’t afford to worry about those already gone.

      What’s gone is gone and that’s it. Regarding affordability: It is very rare that I ever buy anything at full price. I am strictly a bargain hunting perfumista, both by choice and by necessity! I would never have purchased all of these back-ups if I had not found them somewhere for pennies on the dollar!

26. the way perfume industry is evolving leaves me with no choice but having backups. I usually count backups in ml than number of units. The most I have is of vintage Eau Sauvage (at least 3 liter :)) some others also get close to the 1L mark such as dior homme (silver tube version) and Morabito Or Black vintage

      Thinking in mls is a good way to gauge back-ups of old favorites. It seems to me that 3 liters of vintage Eau Sauvage should be sufficient to get you through all kinds of tough times! Are there a few more fragrances you need to back-up or are you now totally prepared for the perfume apocalypse? I can comfortably say that I am now ready. 😉

      • I am more or less ready. My goal in the near future is to significantly downsize my collection and it is certainly possible I would move to backups of my most favorite ones. Some other ones I would like to have more are oriignal Cuiron and Nombre Noir 🙂

27. Crikey! Who woulda thought that the issue of backups would generate so much discussion!

    I’ve bought one or two back-ups but usually I give them away in the end. I’m a relatively light spritzer I guess, so I rarely get to the end of anything. Chanel No 19 is the exception. I have … mumble mumble … bottles of that. 🙂

29. I’ve always wanted to buy more backups, but as you mentioned, I’d need several lifetimes to use up what I have now. An I has yet to acquire some of my most wanted fragrances. So, I have backups of a couple reformulated or discontinued fragrances, and leave it at that. I use 3 sprays per application, and usually one or two spritzes per reapplication once or twice daily. So I’m hoping to use up some of this beautiful fragrance and enjoy it!

30. Hi Mom – This is too funny:)! As Brad says “anything worth doing is worth over doing”. I just put on perfume on the weekdays in the morning. I don’t have back up bottles but if I did I would have mass amounts of Versace Bright Crystal. And hey, if you ever feel the need to get rid of some of your back up bottles feel free to send them too me:)!

31. I have back-ups only for 2 perfumes – my all-time love and favorite Lancôme Climat and limited edition Jo Malone Sweet Milk (but my first bottle of it has just a quarter left in it). But if tomorrow I learn about the discontinuation of one of the 10-15 other favorites, I’ll immediately buy a back-up bottle for those – just to feel safe(r).
