Heya APJ,

So I have had this decant rattling around my sample box. It’s hand written and has the First In Fragrance unicorn sticker, plus the date 05/16 so I’m thinking May this year. Really, I don’t know how it got to be there as I haven’t ordered from this wonderful people this year at all (OOOPS! Sorry guys). It is a mystery. If someone remembers why I have it could they enlighten me please?

Well it opens sweet and balmy. Coffee, urine, woods, birch, honey and balmy resins are my guesses. It’s a pretty aggressive introduction to Stercus and has the smell of animals and urine soaked hay after a flatulent night in the barn. I smell something that I’ve smelled before with Roxana from Illuminated Perfumes when we were composing a Feral Feet accord back in 2013. Well, I say we but it was her composition with Tom Pease and I egging her on to greater heights of outrageous.

Is this a natural perfume? It has a bit of that feel too, the dark, dank, murkiness that makes many of them so enveloping and deep. Labdanum and an oudh-ish barnyard seem to be the heart that still maintains a honeyed sweetness, the feral bits not the pretty modern sweet kind. Is it tobacco? Could be but honestly I am pretty lost. Why don’t we talk more about how Stercus makes me feel?

Stercus feels cold, alone and windswept. Imagine you are caught out in a very large and wooded park at dusk after a cool sunny autumn day. Now you’ve stayed too long feeding the ducks, the light is dwindling, the wind now has no sunlight to cut its icy blast and you are not dressed for the change. The leaves have fallen from many of the trees and they are stuck wetly to each other. As you walk briskly over them you disturb the smell of their decomposition and close by there is the smell of possums, or maybe it’s a fruit bat roost. That is how Stercus affects me, there is my vision.

Eight hours later and I’m still surrounded by a soft fog of Stercus. It’s green, sweet and funky. Still has the call of wilderness stamped upon it. Beautiful.

  1. Hey Portia, Yes that was from me! It is one of the samples I purchased when I visited the offices of First in Fragrance in Germany. (Or by their German company name: Aus Liebe Zum Duft “for the love of fragrance”) What a magic day that was! Lisa kindly curated sniffs for me and I worked my way through as much as I could in a few hours. It was fabulous.

    So yes this little sample was my gift to you from that day. I’m glad that you’ve found it interesting! Great run down, thanks for sharing your thoughts. 🙂

      What a wonderful gift. It’s quite a fragrance, more an experience than a scent really. I will be wearing this around the house and really enjoying the magical ride. Can’t even imagine wearing it somewhere.

  2. Portia – I can tell this perfume really took you places. I found it to be incredibly fascinating in a primal sense. Not sure if I would ever feel like wearing it though. It could be perfect for an isolated trip to the Outback??! 🙂 Thanks for the link love.

    • HA! Funny you should say that Steve. Yes, I too find it difficult to imagine wearing Stercus among people. The outback would be a perfect setting for its weirdness, ha ha ha.

  3. Hi Portia,

    Possums? Oh dear. I saw a big fat one strolling leisurely on the periphery of the garden early this morning. A really big one! Also about a month ago I think I saw a cougar (not the human kind) moving quickly down the side yard at about 10:00 pm. This afternoon I noticed a small bat roosting above the front door. Deer, bear, bobcats, raccoons, rabbits, owls, coyotes, eagles and a host of vermin are regulars. I suppose they come to visit (and some take up residence) because of the trees. We still have trees on our property. Everywhere else around here the trees have been chopped down. It seems that our neighborhood has become kind of a sanctuary for displaced wildlife. Feral? We’ve got it! I think I might know the smell of Stercus.

    • Hey Azar,
      How lucky they are to have your property to hide in. The possums in Sydney are bigger than the healthiest house cat and can be ferocious. We naughtily feed one with apple and other fruit because she has lost an eye and was looking so thin, hungry and forlorn. Not every night, maybe twice a week we leave a bit out for her so it doesn’t become a thing. She had a baby last year and he still comes sometimes earlier than her and grabs some.
      They haven’t marked this place but they used to in our old house where we never fed or helped them because they were too scary.
