Portia’s Desk Fragrances December 2016

Hi there Fragrant Fumies,

As you know my desk regularly gets a declutter from all the accumulated fragrant stuff that lurks there. This month has been particularly spectacular for frag usage without putting it away. I know, naughty boy. So before I find the homes where all these beauties belong I thought I’d share the true horror of my mess.

    • HAH! Yes, I do tend to exaggerate JackieB. Come over some day and sniff the collection. there’s always something new or very old that you’ve probably not sniffed before.

  1. Only hand cream

I might bring a vial from my to-be-tried box in my lunch bag to put on in the afternoon if I wore something weaker in the morning. But, I work with one of those “sensitive to smells” people who complains to Human Resources if you wear fragrance.

    • Hey Gina,
That must be tough for you and the sensitive person. Luckily my office is just for me and it’s as far as you can get from most of the apartments common areas. I’m better left over here to stink the place up as much as I like.

    • Hey Sue Mills,
I get the paperwork done every week because there’s nowhere to put it down. He He he.

  2. Papers and more papers. They get up to mischief at night and reproduce ceaselessly. No perfume but my collection is in a wardrobe in the same room.

    • Hey Mary,
I have a paper spike. Everything important that needs to go to the bookkeeper gets spiked, everything else gets binned. seems to work.

        • HA! The Opium I buy for my BFFs Mum. Every time I see one for a reasonable price I buy it. She doesn’t know how expensive the old stuff is getting and goes through more than 50ml a year. He He he.
I do wear them though to make sue they’re not fakes. SHHHHH

        • Bought it at Officeworks for about 15 bucks. Every couple of months all the papers get pulled off the spike and put into an envelope, in order, so the bookkeeper has a complete, dated list of all expenses through this house and the businesses. They are all marked what they are bought for as I spike (well, as Scott spikes)

  3. Dang, Portia, you have as much perfume stuff as I do! My desk has no perfumes but my bedroom is drowning in them and a whole closet is full of their boxes and unopened backup bottles. AND I have a ton of untried samples. I’ve sold some things and swapped some things but there is still too much!! I need to go on a perfume diet but perfumers keep making so many beautiful perfumes…. Help…. Actually I love my beautiful perfumes, couldn’t live without them. The one I keep reaching for lately is the lovely Annick Goutal Nuit Etoilee EDP. Stunning!

    • Hi there rickyrebarco,
Yes, we have both been bitten hard by the perfume acquisition bug. Might as well enjoy it eh?

  4. I spoke too soon, I did find a sample of Diptyque Do Son in my desk, mostly used, along with2 L’Occitane lip balms (great stuff!) and Sisley hand cream, which is great for dealing with those hand wrinkles!

    • Hey rickyrebarco,
Recently there were some studies done about meeting people for the first time that shake hands. Apparently within moments of shaking someone’s hand for the first time you put your hand near your nose to sniff them, like a dog but less obvious. I like the idea of people smelling my excellent choice in hand cream when I meet them so keep a small one in my bag in case.

      • That is fascinating. I’m in the legal field so I do a lot of handshaking. I’m going to be ‘mindful’ of what I do next time I shake hands! Love that tidbit.

In most of Central and South Florida it’s the thing to hug people and do an air kiss or even a light cheek kiss when greeting someone you know, no matter what their gender. It’s the wonderful Latin influence. I love this because you do smell them up close and personal. Maybe that’s why I like this custom better, immediate sniffs!! And humans also like to groom each other. I am always wanting to touch people’s hair, but I’ve learned to ask first. Some folks don’t like it I’ve discovered. I don’t need much personal space but it appears others do!

  5. Wow, it has been a long time since I wrote! I have moved onto a sailboat with my SO. I had to destash in a big way, but these favorites made it onboard and now sit snuggled in a box with cotton padding…glass on boats can be tricky 🙂 : a sample of Guerlain L’Heurre de Nuit; Prada Infusion D’iris; Guerlain Jardins de Bagatelle vintage and new; Guerlain L’Heure Bleue; Serge Lutens Bas de Soie; Jovan White Musk; and Chanel Coco Mademoiselle 🙂

Curently we are in La Paz, Mexico. Today I am wearing the Coco (which I never thought I would like, but it was a gift and I am really falling in love with it 🙂

    • Hey Eliza,
How lucky are you? Life on a boat must be gorgeous.
Looks like you have a terrific selection to choose from.

    • Hi there Ceil,
If it was $100 for a 50ml I would own a bottle. In Australia with the Armani Prive range at $340, when that whole line used to be $200 about 2 years ago, seems outrageous. And I’ll never use 100ml of it.
Also if I was looking for a white floral to fill a void in my collection things would be different too.

  6. Do you actually manage to use your desk for anything else but keeping a part of your collection there? 😉

The only perfume that can be found on my desk is a mini-bottle that I decide to use as a part of my Zen garden – and that’s in my work office. At home – no perfumes, just some papers, magazines and memory sticks. Boring, I know. Especially compared to you desk 🙂

    • Hey Undina,
Yes, the blog, trivia and real estate is managed from this desk. Every fortnight, or month in this case, I go through and put everything away and then it slowly builds up again. Only two things survived the cleanup: Splash Forte and Liberté. The rest is off the desk and away now till next time I need it.
