What Are You Proud Of: Surrender To Chance

Hello Frag Family,

There is a lot of drama and hate in the world today, so much bad news, ghastly happenings and unthinkable political chicanery. It’s getting harder & harder to turn on a television or computer without reading or seeing more of the same and nearly all of it doom & gloom.

Let’s do something different today. Let’s look back on 2016 and think of something that you did that makes you feel proud. Doesn’t have to be big or life changing, can be something simple or even negligible to you but may have made a huge difference to someone or something else. We can all read each other’s stories and see that the world is still full of goodness, even in everyday life.

What Are You Proud Of In 2016?

What am I proud of in 2016? Jin & I adopted two Greyhounds. They were ready for euthanasia because they were not fast enough to run on the track. Jin had been badgering me since Gucci was put down in January to get a replacement. He had never had a dog as a pet until he moved in with Gucci & me and since she’d been gone he missed her terribly. The day I took Gucci down to the vet he had to leave work because the poor man couldn’t stop weeping uncontrollably. It ended up being 3 days off before he could go a half day without breaking down. They had spent most of their nights together, while I was at work, curled up on the couch or floor for the last 4 years. It was a big loss for him.

I finally caved and asked a few Greyhound trainers if they had any that needed saving. Then if we could meet them and hopefully take a pair home. It didn’t take long before one of the guys said he had a couple that were good mates and that they were going to the vet the next week, would I like to meet them?

So Jin and I took a car ride to destiny. I knew we’d be taking home two dogs but Jin had no idea. He was so nervous and excited and when he met them he fell madly in love immediately. It was sweet and beautiful. This picture is the moment when Jin found out he was going to be allowed have his first ever dog as a pet that he could call his own.

Jin Paris Jinx First day

Don’t get me wrong. The dogs have come with the usual set of drama, teaching them how we want them to live will take a year or more. We are all enriched by each other though and having them is so wonderful and joyful. It’s worth the extra time and energy we have to put in, most days anyway. So that’s one of the things I’m proud of being a part of in 2016.

  1. That is so wonderful that you adopted two doggies in need of a loving home! I’m proud of myself for getting back into dance competitions at the ripe old age of 34 and I trained really hard to come back from an injury! Going to compete in my first championship in 2017!

I flew out to Venice to meet you guys, I ran 5K when I couldn’t run 5m (and raised a lot of money for charity thanks to generous pals like you), started eating better and arranged a trip to Barcelona.
Thanks for the reminder, lovely Portia.

    Congrats on your babies!

I am proud of surviving the breakup with the man I adored, multiple surgeries and doctors who tried to tell me there’s nothing wrong with me. I am proud that I am feisty, don’t give up or quit, don’t take know for an answer and have learned when to walk away and how to pray for those I leave behind.

  5. Proud of learning more about working in precious metals, wax carving, my first two rings based on old byzantine and early medieval designs, and more to come over this next year. I am so happy to see these beautiful photos of the two greyhounds, they are great beauties and true loves. I know it’s an adjustment period as they were not raised to be pets or live inside a house but once the attachments are made they will do all they can to cooperate as that’s the way the they are, they love to love you whatever way you want. Congrats to you two for having a good year and making such a lovely live together! Not entering for the giveaway, I have ridiculous amounts of perfume and all else here so it should go to a newbie or someone who has room! XOXOXO and extra to the two dog boys.

  6. Thank you Portia for the opportunity to win something for Christmas. I follow by email.

I wasn’t sure what to write about … and then looked around me. Pretty much our entire kitchen is now distributed in three different rooms and there is white haze of dust in the air, gradually settling over all the items that are sitting outside their cupboards. Wondering how I’m going to get it all cleaned and back together in time for 15 family coming for dinner Christmas Eve. Was supposed to go shopping tonight to finish present shopping for my daughter. We have two large holes newly drilled through our kitchen walls. And a safe and relatively happy cat in the spare room.
My other half brought home a 6 year old cat who had just been surrendered to a shelter. We are fostering her. She is very nervous and seems to react very badly to doors being opened and too much ‘people movement’. She got scared this morning, leapt on top of our kitchen cupboards and disappeared behind the back. Our own cat used to do this. But this one didn’t reappear at all today and made no noise at all to let us know where she was. We climbed on top of the cabinets and looked down, but couldn’t see her. We were worried she had got out, but after everyone else was asleep and I was doing the dishes, she called out to me.
Ladders, drills, torches and hammers later, and she is safely out from where she was stuck, has eaten, had a bit of a sook with me, and is now safely in a closed room.
I’m proud that we did what we had to to get her out, that she is safe and seems contented and happy, and that my partner didn’t hesitate to go through a wall to save a cat we have known for 2 days.
I’m proud that I have always known the goodness of this man.
Thanks for the chance to share this, Portia xx.

  10. I follow APJ via email of the blog. Portia, I LOVE the pics of you and Jin and the gorgeous greyts. I love all sighthounds and I would love to adopt a big greyhound, too, maybe in the new year…

I was so upset by the election in the US that I resolved to make a difference myself this year and to do everything I could personally to make things better for marginalized people and animals (in Trump world that means anyone who is not Caucasian and Christian). I bought gifts of lots of needed clothes for 2 adorable little girls whose Mom died and wouldn’t have had any Christmas without the folks in my office who adopted their family for Christmas. It was tons of fun. I got cute little dresses and outfits for them. Much better than buying for people who don’t need anything.

No gifts in my family this year. We have all we need and more! We are also eating only sustainable organic food and all my clothing now comes from a brand that is dedicated to fair wages and good living conditions for the people who make the clothes, as well as environmentally safe manufacturing practices. My only new garment this month is made from recycled wool. I know these are small changes and totally ‘first world’ changes, but it is what I can do to live my beliefs.

I also have been seriously meditating daily for the last 5 months and it’s helping me enormously to deal with stress from my various autoimmune diseases and to make me a kinder, more loving person. I’m doing lovingkindness meditation for myself, my family and I recently extended it to a person who wronged me who is in jail now. That was hard to do, but holding hate in your heart is not good for anyone.
Hope you and Jin and the doggies have a wonderful holiday!

I went to my college reunion and just listening to the accomplishments of my fellow classmates made me feel so humbled. I’m very proud to be a part of my class and of my university.
I guess I’m also proud of my resilience in the face of dramatically reduced financial circumstances. Trying to find creative and non monetary solutions to everyday life is challenging and sometimes daunting, but it must be done. Two of my adult children also needed help so they now live with me until things get better for them.
I want to thank APJ for all its fantastic giveaways;it makes it possible to participate in the fragrant community, but it has been more than that. It has been an interesting and thoughtful experience-like going through a museum with a wonderfully knowledgeable tour guide. It just so enhances one’s pleasure. 14. So happy for you, Jin, and the pooches! I feel good that I took care of my aunt along with Hospice this time last year. She passed in January. She lived about 400 miles away, and we were there for her. I also began teaching at two new schools, and I’m proud that my students excelled for their final exams. We also hosted two of our friends from the Netherlands in a small, cramped two-bedroom, one bath house…with four cats and us back in May which took some serious redecorating, furniture moving, creative “hangers” for towels, clothes, whatnot, and now I’m most proud that we rescued a four-week old kitten (now 9 weeks!) and have kept him, despite the work of keeping our tiny house immaculate. I too have been galvanized by recent events and after taking a hiatus from public events am now more politically active than I have been in a couple years. Finally, after several difficult years of probate after my parents died and a fire that ravaged the small community in which I grew up, and which unfortunately affected the property though not the house, my fiance and I rustled up a payment to do a buyout in a short three weeks, so in a few months we begin the process of moving and restoring house and grounds which will take many years! Proud about that! In a few months we will be back at my childhood home in the hills. Happy Holidays to you all and a scented new Year. I follow by email! Thank you for the giveaway!

  15. Hi Portia! What a good post! The thing I’m most proud of is simply getting through what has been a horrible year for the US and for the world in general. I had gotten so overwhelmed trying to balance my three or four “careers” and process all of the disturbing news reports that for several months I completely dropped out of my theatre group, stopped testing perfume samples, and stopped doing social media of any kind so that I could catch up in my “day-job” and businesses and also focus on my own well-being.

During this time I started back running again after a year of inactivity, and have been working out at the gym a couple of days a week, which is immensely helpful for my mental state. I plan on maintaining this training schedule over the coming year. This week I finally wrote a new short play and went back to my playwrights group, posted on my own blog for the first time since August, and have started checking my short, highly curated set of blogs again (I check APJ through my blog website). I am now working on several new fragrances that I hope to launch next year. In the end, I’m proud of having the discipline to drop enough non-essential activities to just get back on track, more or less, without any major screw-ups on the job and business front.

  16. Hello Portia, and thank you. You made me happy-cry today. The sight of Jin with your two new family members was like a cupid’s arrow of joy to my heart. Those moments of true love make all the hard parts worthwhile. When I lost a four-legged furry love to kidney disease 15 years ago I stayed home from work for three days. I am grateful that as life moves forward it makes way for love.

I’m also grateful that since childhood I’ve had time and place to love dogs, cats, birds, fish, and even reptiles a time or two, all as part of my family. At the moment our household includes five small other-than-human members, and our lives are richer and better because of them.

What am I proud of? For more than a year I’ve made myself speak up. I’m can have a hard time saying what’s on my mind. So I’ve made myself say “yes” to the important things and “no” to the nonsense. When other people’s craziness creeps in I think “Not my circus, not my monkeys” then pootle along. I’ve learned more often to say “I need help” and “Do you need help? what can I do?” As a result I’ve felt more connected to new friends and old friends and my family.

I’ve decided to make 2017 the year of compliments. I know how precious an unexpected and sincere kind word can be. How unexpected and delightful it is when someone, even a stranger, admires my choice of fragrance! I should praise people more often. And I wonder why people don’t say what they’re thinking when they have nice words to share? A compliment is good for everyone.

I follow APJ via email. Always will. 🙂

I vividly remember her saying that the correct response to a compliment is a smile and a thank you.

  19. Hello Portia. Your new furries seems to be fitting into your life well. 2016 has been difficult at my workplace with lots of ‘disruptions ‘due to an extension being built, which in turn disturbed many of the residents with dementia.
I have always been a very materialistic person, however things changed in August when I attended two forums about homelessness in my community. Each month since then I have donated a set sum of money to my local soup bus.
    I sent a voucher to a friend who I ‘met’ via Twitter who ,as a dairy farmer is doing it tough. She informed me she was thrilled to be able to buy fresh fruit and vegies {usually could only afford frozen!!!}
One of the items on my bucket list was achieved just this week actually ,as posted on Facebook. that dream?
To wrap gifts at my local shopping Centre on behalf of the Salvos
I’d like to wish everyone in the APJ FAMILY a healthy and productive 2017.

  30. It’s a different sort of pride, but I’m very proud to be the auntie of my amazing niece and 2-week-old nephew. They bring me so much joy.

Wishing all APJers the very best this festive season 🙂
