Attaquer le Soleil Marquis de Sade by Quentin Bisch for Etat Libre d`Orange 2016

Hi there APJ,

Recently I went and hung out with my mate Bronwyn of Gascoigne & King Candles. I did some Xmas shopping with her and 7 of my buddies got Gascoigne & King candles. PERFECT gift. Anyway she passed me this sample because she is also the distributor of Etat Libre d’Orange here in Australia. Well, I looked at the beautifully packaged sample and thought, “Those freaking bastards at ELdO want me to make a complete tit out of myself when telling people what frag I’m wearing.” Seriously guys, I’m just a unilingual dude that wears dresses from down under. This kind of long French name, any long name really, kills my joy in a scent. So I was already halfway ready to hate it just because of the name.

Fragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Labdanum

Smells like labdanum incense. Unbelievably gorgeous. Simple yet complex, wearable, challenging. Glorious.

Then name and the ad are irrelevant (and pretty rubbish) but the fragrance is bloody good.

My first love was ‘fat electrician’ found in a wonderful boutique in Barcelona. My gateway fume to indie and niche scents but I have gotten stronger since then and I do really like secretions magnifique, so unusual, naughty and fun. ;P

I would love to try this sample because I’ve never had the chance to smell any fragrances from the house and the involvement with the de Sade family is intriguing.
    Thanks for the contest!

  3. Strange name all right! I haven’t tried any Etat Libre scents yet, though I like the sound of Putain des Palaces. Follow by email. 🙂

  4. Follow by email – this looks interesting! I like some of the Etat Libre scents, especially The Afternoon of a Faun, but some are not wearable for me. Credit to them though for coming up with different/unusual perfumes!

  5. Eau de protection. You know, it was only last year that I finally worked out that ELDO was the internet’s acronym for “Etat Libre d`Orange”. For the longest time, I thought ELDO was some Italian niche brand.

  6. I follow via email and unfortunately I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of smelling any of the Etat Libre d`Orange fragrances yet so can’t really list what i like or favorite but would appreciate this chance thanks.

  7. Hi Portia, thanks for opportunity; I follow by email and now Facebook.

Like many others who’ve commented, I haven’t tried any ELDO fragrances, but one that particularly interests me is Josephine Baker. I’d like something in a bottle to give me a hint of her strength, determination and self-belief.

  8. I’ve been wanting to sample this one. Haven’t tried all of the ELdO line, but La Fin du Monde and Rien are wonderful and I like The Afternoon of a Faun a lot. I also wish they would rein in the names a smidge. I like that they are creative and some of them are fun, but some are just impossible to remember properly (or spell correctly. I didn’t bother to double check myself, btw). I probably won’t even bother to try the previous release, Hermann is my shadow something…whatever, because I don’t want to ever have to try to tell someone what I’m wearing if asked. Yeah, I know it’s a super intelligent literary quotation but I still think it’s a rubbish name for a perfume.

  9. Oooh, I would love this. First, I have read De Sade extensively. Justine is my favorite. I did a paper in college in a seminar on subordination and dominance in literature (husband/wife, master/servant, etc. NOT sexually) and compared the main character of Henry James’ The Americans and Justine from Justine. They are both masochistic characters who never learn from their mistakes and keep, my their virtue, being victimized. I had to read De Sade and Sacher von Masoch extensively in order to look at the psychological implications. And, I LOVE INCENSE!

  11. Hi Portia and thanks for the info on the new fragrance by the name of…ehm…what was it again…? 😀
Yes, I also can’t stand long names in French because I feel incredibly stupid when I pronounce them.
My favourite ELDO, and I haven’t tried many, is Like This. Some are rather extreme, like for example Rien. I could never wear it.

  12. I am a huge ELdO fan! They make great fragrances, but I agree they have the most ridiculous names and I also will not be able to pronounce this one. I treasure my bottle of Sex Pistols. Following by email.

  13. I’d love to try this as I adore Incense and. I think the name is great. I have a full bottle of Putain des Palaces and get great pleasure from telling people the name of my perfume! Following by email.

  14. I like la Fin du Monde, but I feel like I need to be much more familiar with ELDO scents in order to make any kind of judgment on the house. Their names are ridiculous. I remember the first time a SA suggested I try Putain des Palaces. I did a double take and stared at her, and she and the other SAs got a kick out of my naive shock.

    I follow by e-mail; thanks 🙂

  15. I subscribe via email. My introduction to ELdO was Like This, and it remains my favourite despite all the other enchanting concoctions they have to offer. Maple syrup, roast pumpkin, ginger – of the cakey variety, not the sharp spicy one – cool, rooty carrot. Sure, it’s not a challenging perfume, and “unchallenging” is often thrown about in the perfume world as a byline for “unremarkable and crude” – an accusation I think entirely uncalled for. Like This is warm, velvety, comfortable, yet polished. It melds and develops, without letting you forget what the whole looks like. Some perfumes feel like they sparkle – Like This glows from the inside. Some days I want a perfume to jolt me into a different mood or even season, to project a particular facet of my persona, or to intrigue me and continually engage my intellect and curiosity. Like This is for the days I need nothing more vital from my perfume than a soft smile and a warm embrace.

  16. I like Fils de Dieu du Riz et des Agrumes and Divin’Enfant (where I get no leather). I cannot decide if I find the names fun or not. At least they don’t seem to be in Franglais, and they are no harder to get right than other French names (says she who does not manage to get from a B1 to B2 level in French). Haven’t got any bottles from this line. I follow via email.

  17. Oooooh, I love ELdO! Like This is one of my best gourmand perfumes, Tom of Finland is one of my favourites with leathery notes, Fat Electrician is very unusual and it’s hard to explain what attracts me so much to it… ELdO is a niche as it should be. I’m dreaming to have Remarkable People, Noel au Balcone, Bijou Romantique and YES, I DO to my collection but honestly, I’d love to get them all =)

    And I subscribe via email.
