Mon Guerlain by Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk for Guerlain 2017

Hey Hey Frag Heads,

Well, hasn’t there been uproar on the scentbloggosphere around this one? Guerlain’s first stand alone pillar fragrance since the Limited Edition turned regular range Terracotta Le Parfum and L’Homme Ideal, both arriving in 2014. It seems though that this one was to be launched in the grandest of old styles like back in the 20th century. All over Europe and Australia the bus stations, buses, cinema ads and TV showed Mon Guerlain. They picked a controversial celebrity, Angelina Jolie, to be the face of it and then made her a silhouette. It all seemed like we had returned to the golden age of fragrance and because of all the hype, it being a Guerlain and the strange lack of hype for anything else they’ve done except those fun cartoon ads for La Petit Robe Noire (how CHANEL didn’t think of that I’ll never know) we were all expecting a masterpiece, a stroke of genius. Could it be the new Jicky, Shalimar, Mitsouko or Samsara? How could anything live up to such wild expectation?

Mon Guerlain Guerlain FragranticaFragrantica

Parfumo gives thee featured accords:
Top: Bergamot, Provençal lavender
Heart: Paradisone®, Jasmine sambac, Coumarin
Base: Iris, Tahitian vanilla, White sandalwood

OK, I need to tell you that I bought my bottle of Mon Guerlain 100% for the bottle. I had sniffed it in passing and found it to be a fairly predictable rehash of most of what is on the market currently. Sweet, candy like cordial with little to help it rise above the celebuscented fairy floss storm except the bottle, which I adore. So, while in a small corner perfumery across the road from Luxembourg’s central station earlier in the year they had a 20% off Guerlain sale. Could I resist? No I could not. With my purchase I was also gifted a 5ml Boxed mini of Mon Guerlain EdP and a 30ml Mon Guerlain Body Lotion. Both of which are up for grabs in our giveaway tonight.

Once I had bought it I was able to wear it on my own, had time to really enjoy it and get to know the personality buried under the uninspiring scent it feels like in the mall or airport. Suddenly I found myself not only enjoying wearing Mon Guerlain but choosing it over other favourites.

I am reminded strongly of recently D/Cd Guerlain beauty Oriental Brulant with added Lavender. Mon Guerlain sparkles with lavender and it makes the whole fragrances gourmand-ness less stickily sweet and adds a historical linkage to one of its all time most popular scents Jicky. Not the same as Jicky but a passing reference to Guerlains history. The dry down is a 21st century Guerlinade reinvention with the same or similar vanilla in pride of place, cooled by iris and creamed by sandalwood.

Is Mon Guerlain a masterpiece? No, not in my opinion. Is it a modern LVMH money making adaptation of a Guerlain? Yes. Some of the heart has been removed but the soul remains.

  1. I follow via FB and email.

My fave…hmmm…that probably would have to be the one that I wear most often and was my FIRST EVER expensive frag purchase and first Guerlain about 25 years ago: Le Jardin de Bagatelle.

  2. Hard to pick a favourite but I’d nominate Le Petite Robe Noire EdP because it was the fragrance that first brought me to Guerlain and ultimately led me down this fragrant rabbit hole. It is still a favourite comfort/sleep scent of mine – particularly in the body lotion.

  3. I remember being asked once whether I was a Chanel girl or a Guerlie girl, and I couldn’t really decide. Some years later I think my best loved scents are Guerlain. I have many, including vintage. I love them all and cannot answer…oh, OK maybe Shalimar, or Cuir Beluga.
Have not tried Mon Guerlain. I follow by email

  4. The Guerlain I’ve worn most is Champs-Elysees, though I never fell in love with it. I do like the sound of the lavender in this one. And the pretty bottle! Thanks for the giveaway. Follow by email. 🙂

  5. I had Imperiale EDC for women. It was oh so light a skin scent and I sprayed so much each time from the decant in order to smell anything! Very citrus. I follow on email and the WordPress.

  6. Hi Portia! My fave, absolute fave is Cuir Beluga. It is also my first and most expensive (for me) bottle. I wear it on special occasions and sometimes to bed, if I’m feeling a little down. I follow via email. Thanks!

  7. Being very new to the perfume world I recently bought the Surrender to Chance Guerlain sampler!

I can’t believe how quickly Mitsuoko has grown on me! It makes me feel very elegant, feminine and refined… which is peculiar as I’m very much a dirty jeans, spilled coffee & dog hair kind of person.

I follow via email & FB.

  10. Hi Portia Johnny bought me a bottle of Samsara, the gold one when it first came out, the first fragrance he actually chose himself, and also a small vintage Mitsouko that a certain someone graciously gifted me. Two very beautiful perfumes in my collection. Thanks for letting me have a sniff at your place of Mon G, it was nice, but loved the Santal BIG time….

  13. Hhmm my fav would be Mitsouko. I only recently finally understood and liked Shalimar.. it took a while but I finally like it.

My first introduction to mon guerlain was at Myer with someone squirting it onto a card and thursting it at me. Rude. So I declined and decided to try it on my own accord at another time.
I love layering with body lotions so I wish more niche scents came with body lotions in gift sets or even to purchase separately. It’s not very common.
That’s for the giveaway darling! x

  14. Hi, I follow via email and Facebook. My favorite Guerlain is Guet apens. Guerlain is not easily found where I live anymore. They removed their cosmetic counters from our department stores. So I have been quite curious about this one.

  15. Hi Portia,
I follow by email and my #1 favourite is the dearly-departed Auntie Mame of Guerlains: Mahora.

Of more recent Guerlains, I love Lys Soleia, and have a lifetime supply of it. (I hope.)

  16. My two favorites are Shalimar vintage only, followed, okay perhaps succeeded, by Ne m’Oubliez Pas (“forget me not”) recently released. My only wish for NOP is that they had released it with a simpler name for us English speakers. Then there is L’heure Bleu, well…. Mitsouko is tops too along with vintage Samsara. I’m definitely more a Guerlain gal then a Chanel one though I have favs from both houses, but Shalinar and “NOP” are the zenith.
I have tried the new Mon Guerlain, and just was so bored. I hunted for that Lavender, a note I love, and never found it.

  17. I have sniffed Mon Guerlain and your review is so perfectly on point but darn it that mini is the cutest. I’m not a fan of the bottle but the mini…. so cuuuuute!

Har to pick a favorite as always… but the ultimate has to be Chamade!

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! I follow via e-mail and facebook! Wish you all the best!

  18. I confess I hated Mon Guerlain. I wanted to hate it the minute mention was made of Jicky and sweet in reference to it. All the ‘buts’ came in….

It began with Sui-vez Moi by Fragonard and a bar of Coco Mademoiselle soap. The soap accustomed me to sweetness and I began to crave the scent at night. Sui-vez Moi introduced me to lavender and vanilla.

So, last week, I bought a 50ml Mon Guerlain. It will never be a deep love, but it scratches an inner itch. I may need to buy a 100 ml by the end of the year. It brings comfort and a little femininity.

My fave Guerlain is maybe Idylle – because its the only one I have? It’s such a great straight up floral – Its all lilac and jasmine on me and makes me think of spring.
I also really like Champ Elysee if it’s anything like I recall it from sniffing at a counter a while ago. It’s on my To Buy list thats for sure.

  22. That mini is super-cute too 🙂 I follow by e-mail. My favorite Guerlain is probably Cuir Beluga! But that entire line is pretty fabulous. I’m glad you’re mostly enjoying the scent! It’s sad to hear the heart is gone, but then, I’ve never been a fan of most of the Shalimars or the other Guerlain classics.

I follow via email. My all-time favorite Guerlain is Spiriteuse Double Vanille. In fact it’s one of my all-time favorites period. But the rest of the house I’ve had a lot of trouble with and have yet to find one I like. Maybe this will be it? I doubt it 🙂 but it would be fun to try. Thanks for the chance!

  32. Chiming in late to say thanks for the musings on Mon Guerlain. Have not sniffed yet, but I adore lavender and hope this might be one to love. Also glad that there is something to counter the sweetness. Hope the jasmine is soft, some jasmine notes are spiky to my nose. It’s hard to name a favorite Guerlain because Terracotta, L’Heure Bleue, Eau de Guerlain, Vol de Nuit, and Jardins de Bagatelle all make me happy. Be well and be fragrant, Guerlain-o-philes! 🙂
