Hey Independent Perfume Peeps,

I got a bunch of stuff a while back from a split group I’m in. For some reason todays fragrance didn’t get sniffed. I’m not quite sure why. Anyway, in the words of Pretty Woman, Big Mistake.

Before we even start this review I want to tell you that I have already been in touch with Spyros at Baruti and bought at full retail a bottle of Dama Koupa. The website was playing silly buggers so I wrote to him direct and got a response within hours, he offered to send me a PayPal invoice and get my fragrance out to me ASAP. YAY! On its way.

Dry, nutty, boozy, sprinkled with sugar that seems to accentuate the lack of sweetness rather than lightening Dama Koupa up. Woodsy, like sawdust with this completely unexpected feeling of desiccated florals. You know those almond biscuits? Like the first unsweet bite into one of those….. but not. Actually, through the heart I get something grain-ish, like barley broth.

I know other people are getting the scent of Macaroons, the original coconut meringue confection, but my nose is getting something much more masculine, outdoorsy and mountainous.

Longevity is excellent and I smell Dama Koupa almost exactly as it went on hours later. Who could wear it? I think anyone with a sense of olfactory adventure because where I am getting manliness others get this bakery style gourmand.

  1. I love gourmands but not the cookie sweetness type. My preferences are fruity: apricot, pineapple, apple, mango especially and the vanilla, chocolate, coffee types.

      Very nice. Do you ever wear the sweet spicy fruit mince of some of Serge Lutens fragrances? They are really yummy too.

  2. I have Baruti Chai, quite a spicy tea creation. I think I am getting tired of too sweet gourmands now or those who are a bit too realistic in terms of reminding you of food. I enjoy some from Gourmand categories but with a creative twist. They should not smell like a particular food but you can also immed. tell they come from a gourmand category.

        • Yeah, I love spicy Indian tea. My last partner is an Indian man and he taught me the how too. That’s a lie, his parents servants taught me how to and he translated.

  3. Good morning!

    I am not a gourmand fan at all. Having said that, I am growing to the idea of some food types, as long as they do have a quirk in another direction. Same as Fazal, above. Fruity ones are generally fine, and I like tea scents. The manliness, outdoorsy, barley vibe is one I gravitate to. I’ll check the range out.

      I can imagine you liking the weird beauty of Dama Koupa. Don’t wear it when you need to concentrate n your tasks though, it’s pretty overwhelming. I find myself falling into daydream.

  4. Yet another brand I haven’t tried. Vanilla in scent is difficult for me, so I tend not to seek out gourmands. The original Prada Candy is, I think, the only true gourmand I own, it is so relaxing in the evening. I like some scents with apricot, plum or rhubarb, but not the sweetest varieties.I tend to like tea scents, but that’s another thing, isn’t it?

    Is it the fir balsam absolute which cuts through and would make the Dama Koupa seem more outdoorsy than gourmand?

      I’m not sure exactly what’s going on in Dama Koupa. The whole seems much greater than the parts and I’m not even 100% sure what fir balsam smells like. Whatever it is that creates this slightly awkward scent is fabulous though. I really like it.

    Thank you for sharing, this one sounds amazing. Last time at wine fest in Auckland I tried grappa and was thinking that I like its smell much better than taste 😀 and I wondered if there are any perfume with this note. Now I know it really exists!))

    • Hey Anastasia,
      Many years ago I worked as a Bar Manager. There was a guy working there that LOVED Grappa and we used to sip it after work.
      It smells WAY better than it tastes. It would make me recoil if I didn’t sip and warm in my mouth.

  6. I agree this is a wonderful dry orris with just a smidge of macaron around the edges and some crinkly papery woods . LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS ONE
