Hello Fellow Fumies,
Once a week here on Australian Perfume Junkies we have a Question, an idea purloined from Olfactoria’s Travels. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it is generally a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
If we get over 100 responses I will draw a $10 Surrender To Chance Gift Card. If we get over 200 responses I will draw a $20 Surrender To Chance Gift Card, that should buy you a couple of ml or pay your postage. Saturday Question: What 5 Would You Take?
This is not a new question but hopefully the way I’ve posed it will be a little different. Every time I do one of these questions the answers change so it always makes me ponder joyfully.
OK, so you’re renovating your house and you have to move out for a month. It’s an Insurance Job so they’re putting you into a Serviced Apartment for one month. You’re really happy about that but there’s a downside. There’s only room in the bathroom for your ablutary stuff and 5 bottles of fragrance. It’s not forever, right, and you only have to choose for your current weather so that cuts down the crossover. What 5 Would You Take?
What 5 Would You Take? My answer
It’s winter here so I’m going to pack mainly stuff I love for cold weather and one “pretend it’s summer” scent.
Keiko Mecheri Un Jour d’Ete:
This winter my “pretend it’s summer’ scent has been Un Jour d’Ete. Its creamy summer vibe has kept it on my desk as a Go-To for months now and as the weather gets cooler I seem to be reaching for it more often. Citrus, coconut and amber meld seamlessly in this beachy beauty. It’s perfect summer scent and works equally well as a reminder.
Guerlain Tonka Imperial:
This beautiful baby came into my collection recently from another collectors wardrobe. Thick, rich, ropey gouts of gorgeous in a sweet/dry sillage that instantly warms me through. Tobacco, tonka and incense over dry woods and almonds and all the Guerlain sweetness without fairy floss-ish-ness. A very gentlemanly gourmand.
Serge Lutens Arabie:
One of the earliest of my Serge Lutens, this bottle has only recently made its way out from the back of the frag cupboard. It is love all over again. What a fabulous perfume. Cloves, spices, fruit mince and resins all come together to offer a pre-oud look at fragrance from the Middle-East. Smelling more like a dessert market than a desert market to our 21st century noses.
DIOR Mitzah:
Aaaah Mitzah! So bold and head turning. Spicy honeyed roses with patchouli and a resinous growl. She is such a queen of a fragrance. Sometimes I wish there were only 20 bottles in my collection so I could wear my favourites much more often. This enforced month would be heavenly.
Divine EdP:
I am not quite sure why but there is little said of the Divine Parfums range. My favourite is the original EdP but I also have the extrait. When I want glamour then Divine EdP fits the bill perfectly. A spicy peach tuberose with a very vanilla mossy dry down Divine EdP is from the 1980s but shows remarkable restraint for the era. Don’t worry, you’ll be fully fragrant all night long but not in the super bomb standards of the day.

It is hot and humid summertime here! Temperature AND humidity both in the 90s. In no particular order: Hermes’ Un Jardin Sur le Nil, Penhaligon’s Blasted Bloom, Chanel Cristalle, Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Nirmal, Lili Bermuda’s Lily. But where am I going to put all my other fragrances for safekeeping during the renovation??

I can’t decide on the weather, and sometimes I wear heavy stuff in summer and lighter in winter. I would bring Vallee Des Rois by Mira Takla, Salome, vintage Shalimar from 1960, Guerlain Encense Mythique, Serge Lutens Foureau Noir. But that’s just this very minute. I’m already changing my mind. And if this was a “real situation” I’d still be anxiously switching out. What about the Tom Ford’s or POAL or Alahine…? If it was entirely “weather based” and only for a very short time, since it’s hotter than the blazes and California is essentially on fire, I might just keep it to some Allegorias, herba, mint,mandarin, and maybe Serge Lutens Gris Clair, or Burberry Brit Rhythm.

Shiva-woman, do you mind letting me know how you feel about Alahine? And SL’s Foureau Noir? I have a small vial of Alahine, but it is still not making a huge impression. I think I need to atomise it. Thank you!

I first tried Alahine from Surrender to Chance. Then I got more. Finally I got a FB.I love it. All my samples I order in at least a 2 ml atomizer if not larger so I can really try it on–heavily if need be. I don’t do well with dabs. The projection and silage is just not great with dabs or roll-one. I
think Alahine is warm and sexy, probably better for winter but I don’t care. I do wake up some mornings just craving something with complete disregard as to temps.
Sl’s Foureau Noir is amazing. This is a lavender that is warm, sexy, and Tonka! I find it considerably more complex than Alahine, but they’re such different scents anyway that I can’t compare. Unlike many perfumistas I truly love lavender. My taste goes all over the place from ambers and incense to lavender. I’m least enamored of big white florals, though some are in my collection. Foureaur Noir is probably for people who want a bit of lavender. It’s not a lavender scent per se; it has an incense rich and Tonka quality with woods, though not astringent (and I like stringent lavenders too, but this isn’t). Think warm and cozy, sexy and mysterious. I’m on my second batch of it. It’s sold in the bell jar of course, but also in a less spendy two-bottle black plastic purse atomizer (good quantity).

Lovely! I’ve seen Foureau Nour in the two pack. A very kind petson offered to decant some for me. I might take her up on the offer. I love my lavenders too!
Dabs. Ugh. I’m not a fan either. I’ll need to invest in syringes to transfer them.
I’m wearing Oha now. I’m finding it does not last more than an hour. I’ll try Alahine again.

Mmm…we were just away for two weeks and I took about 20 decants/samples LOL. But I know what my main staple wears were during those two frosty winter weeks:
Serge Lutens – Five O’Clock Gingembre
Serge Lutens – Chergui
Chanel – Bel Respiro EdP
Hermes – Galop
L’Artisan – Passage d’Enfer
Plus I’d have to cheat and take my Guerlain Le Petite Robe Noire body cream because that’s my favorite comfort/sleep scent…

Lillibet, Galop is on my to-buy list. I ADORE the bottle. It is hefty and soooo Hermes. The scent has that love/hate quince that drags me in for more. The leather is Caleche-like, so blends so well with the quince. A forlorn sunshine scent I expect will work wonders on rainy spring days, when the weather cannot make up its mind.

I sure do enjoy the comments! Such an ecclectic mix of beauties. There are some in these lists I am very keen to try myself. Why is there never enough time to access them all??! A few classics were mentioned there by many, so useful info for newbies to the frag scene.
Given that I can hear the magpies warbling, heralding in the cusp of spring, I am leaning more to florals. But it is also a last minute dash to bathe myself in the richer scents. So,
* Amber Roses by Shay & Blue. I’ll need a 100ml bottle soon. I love the dark incense notes at the base. I have the candle form burning incessantly too.
* Batavia by Teone Reinthal. Move over Coco. Your reign is over, baby! This one has loads more sass.
* 24 Faubourg by Hermes. Edp version. That rich floral nectar has bewitched me big time.
* White Sandalwood by Goldfield & Banks. Sandalwood in faceted diamond form. Sparkles with delight.
* Rajkumari by Evocative Perfumes. A strange beauty. Flits from one note to another, yet gives an overall intangible effect. Not a hippy chick, not an Indian princess from the time of the mighty Hindu empires. Hard to place. A dab on my neck and a few drops in the bath.
I must stray into more of Lutens’ territory. I have Feminite du Bois and want to cry each time I use it. It is the very pale, wallflower sister of Shiseido’s version. So, it has really coloured my view of Lutens. Can any of you suggest a non-cumin Lutens that might sway me? I am tempted by Chergui, Gris Clair (lavender fiend in me!) and 5 o’clock.

Oooh you have mentioned 3 of my favourite Lutens frags and in regular rotation around here. Chergui’s honeyed spices seem to cry out for crisp cold weather but the other two are more versatile. All three are lovely and I’d also give La Fille de Berlin a go if you like darker spicy rose.

I have; all the Lutens. Gris Clair is astringent. But Ensens et Lavande is fantastic: lavender smoke! As I mentioned the Foureau is more sweet without being sweet, and more sexy comfort. Chergui was the scent that I originally followed into SL, but it has been reformulated. Though not the same scent at all (and that’s a pity), it is a beautiful floral now (less tobacco and hay). 5 o’clock has also changed and seems less potent, but it’s one of my favorites. Many of his scents do not go “all the way to Arabic.” Chene is fantastic and Jeux de Peau is a comfort yummy scent ( it really is the smell of warm skin–or apricots and toast, without being full-gourmand). Cedre though simple is not cumin; it’s a cedar with rose and a few other accords. There’s so much in his line that I adore. Those are just off the top of my head.

I second Jeux de Peau and as another lavender lover Encens et Lavand is gorgeous although I’d have described it as more soapy than smoky which is interesting. I must seek out the travel atomiser because I’m using small decants at the moment. Adding Foureau Noire to my sample list.

Kate, thank you! My favourite from that list is definitely Tauerville Rose Flash but it is so potent, and alive! I’d love to wear it more but I’d feel a bit scent-shy. 😛 I have a bottle of L’Heure Bleue EDP but EDT is also very good, slightly different; airier. Jicky is wonderful. I wore it out to dinner on Saturday 🙂

Ballarat is still very much in Winter vibe. Cold blustery winds which pierce right through oneself. Days which barely creep into double figures.
I’m tempted, like Maggiecat, above to throw in a few samples and decants!!! However, 5 bottles is the challenge and as difficult as it is I shall rise to it.

It’s summer here. That doesn’t matter much to me as I’m super intolerant of the high humidity/heat combination we have in Philadelphia and spend even more time indoors now than the rest of the year. My perfume choices have always been based more on mood than weather or clothing anyhow. The biggest problem with this question for me would bse that I almost always wear my fragrance in both dabbed extrait & some form spritzed, so of course I would need 10 bottles rather than 5. In no order then:

Michelle is perfect creamy tuberose, done old school floral aldehydic style. Just the right amount of buttery coconut,along with ylang, jasmine and a small bite of carnation make it so lovely and balanced. As it dries down the green, benzoin, sandalwood and oakmoss in the base come out giving it a little powder and woodiness. I don’t imagine a lot of people now would care for the opening as it is strongly aldehydic and while it’s ladylike and not a killer like Amarige or Fracas it’s still probably stronger than is anticipated today. I always feel pretty wearing it and it never fails to get compliments. I like it all year but love it in summer.

Gorgeous! The smell is so heavenly, so fruity and sharp and perfect for bathing. And then it vanishes so that it doesn’t compete with whatever perfume I’m wearing. I really like using it at night, so it can be my scent for the evening until I go to sleep.

Chiming in late as I returned Sunday evening from a week-long beach trip with 9 family members. Fun and exhaustion rolled into one adventure of swimming, beach combing, mini golf, shopping, too much good food, and a day at the Legoland amusement park with our kids who are growing up too fast for my liking.

I thought I’d wear Terracotta often but spritzed Hiris and Infusion d’Iris more than the others. I must admit I had minis of Eau des Merveilles, Jour d’Hermes, and a handful of samples in my luggage as well.
Great question, I know I would enjoy a month of only these five bottles. Looking forward to reading everyone’s lists.

Legoland is good entertainment for anyone who is a kid at heart or who loves Legos. The park in the western US is smaller than some of the mega-amusement parks so it more walk-able, less overwhelming. A lot of the entertainment is aimed at young children though there is plenty to see and do for the grown ups. If you’re ever somewhere in the world with a Lego park and can spend most of a day there it might be a fun outing.

Adorable, no? Especially the little elephants. I blind bought my first Berdoues Grand Cru because of those elephants. Then I fell in love with the whole line…four bottles now float around my house!
