Hey Crew,
Just arrived in my hands is one of DIOR’s newest set of releases. Apparently they are available in the Paris store so far and maybe NYC but they still don’t even know about them in the Sydney DIOR store, but were really excited by the news. It’s all so new that aren’t even up on fragrantica or parfumo yet, so no notes lists. So today’s post is mainly guesswork. We can all have a laugh when the lists are revealed.
Sakura by DIOR Privé 2017
The only two notes I can find are on baseNotes and they are Cherry Blossom and Almond. As sakura means cherry blossoms that makes sense.
Cherry and greenery open. A wet, sheer, delicate fragrance that has an interesting warmth underneath the cool fruit and frosty cool morning feel. Like going out to get the newspaper on a frosty weekend morning in your warm tracksuit, Uggs and robe. Though it’s cold you are kept warm by your prior internal heat from being in the house. Why a weekend? Sakura feels like there is time, no rush, a calm embrace to the day. Maybe you have already made your morning tea and while you get the paper it’s steeping. There is also a tea feel, dry tea leaves and the dry ache at the back of your throat when drinking it.

The almond is a constant base where all the lighter, wetter and more colourful notes can float around but remain anchored. You know after you’ve had a biscotti and tea? There is a curious taste that follows these together, it’s a happy and comfortable taste. Sakura has moments of smelling like that taste. I think there is vetiver and maybe sandalwood but the creaminess could be ylang.
I would more have expected this style of scent to come from L’Occitane than DIOR but it’s smooth, unrumpled, comfortable elegance does also put me in mind of DIOR post Raf Simons and into the Maria Grazia Chiuri era. It’s pretty and effortless, a softly shimmering scent that will be perfect for the modern day fragrance wearer. Not incredible or ground breaking, in fact quite derivative of what we’ve smelled before but done in a luxurious way. Closer to Hermès that DIOR.
Are you excited by the prospect?

This sounds so pretty! I will be exercising my bloodhound nose on these I think.
Nonchalantly adding that I will be in Paris next weekend…
Silly girly squealing ensues!
Any other recommendations Portia?

I’m excited!! This sounds lovely. I’m surprised at its gentleness though, considering that the Privè collection has some heavy hitters. But, I’m tending to wear softer frags at present, so may suit me well. Look forward to trying this one.

Hey Tina,
I’ve been thinking since writing this article. The Privé line does have some big frags but it also has some very quiet achievers. We need to go in to DIOR in Sydney one day and really smell the range again.

SCOOP!!! Portia, you’re way ahead of the game as usual.
I can’t wait to try the neroli I was told about at Harrods. They are going for a more wearable style so this sounds like it fits into that. Doubt there’ll anything much for the likes of us to get very excited about but I look forward to trying them all the same. It might be hard to justify the price if they’re not extraordinary but we’ll see.

Hey Tara,
Yes, I am very lucky to get my nose on these so soon.
I still have Jasmin des Ange, Souffle de Soie and Cologne Royale to spend time with. My butterflies are fluttering around my tummy because I’m so excited.

I was surprised that I loved the combination of cherry blossom with other notes in Amouage’s Blossom Love. I may have to try this just to compare. Thanks for the heads up!

Hiya Kandice,
Blossom Love is pretty, they are similar but completely different. Yeah, clear as mud, I know.

It sounds rather tame for my taste, but will give it a sniff. I like the notes, but L’Occitane scent at Dior Privé prices does not excite me.

TaraC,
I think you’ll be a bit bored. It’s beautifully done though.

This very much sounds like something I would like, I am always on the search for anything with almond. And comparing with L’Occitane? That is my style of light, work-friendly scent. I shall add to my ever-expanding and completely out of control ‘want’ list 🙂

Hi there VerbenaLuvvr,
I like the L’Occitane ranges too. I think they are excellent fragrance at moderate prices. This will be a winner for you, I reckon.

I know Raf has been praised but I don’t think I am excited about Raf’s era, especially, in perfumes. The best Dior era in modern times for me will always be Hedi Slimane era. Even though he gave us masterpieces like Eau Noire (though it is not exactly to my taste), I will always be grateful to him for giving us Dior Homme. These new privee are commercial releases, at least original privee releases were daring (at least some of them). These new ones are mainstream in exclusive packaging.

OK Fazal,
I don’t agree with you but I love that you have such conviction.
Dior Homme is a masterpiece of mainstream perfumery indeed.

I like the polished elegance of the perfumes I have tried so far from this line and also like almond in perfume. However, the cherry blossoms scents I have tried earlier have all been too sweet, girly and floral. At the same time light fragrances can be real winners in my book,if they are more than skin scents. So yes, I would try this.

Hey Ingeborg,
Yes, loads of cherry blossom has been ethyl maltolled into sugary sweetness. This one is not like that at all.
