Hello Fellow Fumies,

Once a week here on Australian Perfume Junkies we have a Question, an idea purloined from Olfactoria’s Travels. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it is generally a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Saturday Question: What 4 Would You Rebuy First?

There’s been a terrible drama and your whole perfume collection has been lost. Thank goodness it was heavily insured and you will get your money back within the month to start rebuilding your collection. Nothing else was lost, hurt or broken and everyone is safe so you’re not mourning anything except your fabulous fragrance collection. You are given a certificate that allows you to rebuy any FOUR fragrances from your collection. There’s no price limit but you must have had a bottle of the fragrance in your current collection. They can come from different places and the magic of this certificate is that no matter where the fragrance is in the world it will be in your hands tomorrow morning, first thing. So you’ll not be without perfume for your daily rituals.

My Answer:

Mitsouko EdT by Guerlain:

I’m feeling guilty because I’ve picked Mitsouko over Shalimar but I think right now that Mitsouko would be the one I’d like to have on hand. That gorgeous fruity chypre, so sweet and so bitter. It could enfold me in its silky caress and keep me smelling beautiful.

Ashoka by Neela Vermeire Creations:

AHH the guilt is real. I feel like I’m cheating on Mohur but today I think the figgy woods of Ashoka are what I’d ask for. There’s something indomitable about this scent that I think could really help me through a crises. Let’s hope it’s never put to the test.

Eau Absolue by Mona di Orio:

The soft, sheer, glassy smoothness of Eau Absolue is magical. The resigns are perfectly balanced against the spicy fruit and flowers. I can never reconcile the note list and the scent here. What I smell is light warm rain, fresh thick cotton sateen sheets and endless snuggles.

Agent Provocateur Original:

Roses, saffron and woodsy amber. Agent Provocateur is a constant delight for me and punches well above its price range. Long lasting scented glamour that can be dressed up or down and seems to fit so many occasions. Let’s not forget too the sensual pleasure of the pink egg bottle, so cool.

    • I should add that our apartment burned down in 2010. I had a few bottles and a box of sentimental items in my car trunk because I had only recently moved in with my now DH, but otherwise we lost everything. My list is the first four I replaced when we got back on our feet.

      Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose is wonderful. There’s a Drag Queen in Sydney who wears it perfectly and every time I smell her I smile.

      • I used to put a spritz of PW Tea Rose on cold light bulbs. When the lights were on the scent was so gorgeous! Sadly doesn’t work on fluorescent bulbs 😦

  9. Ooooo good question! Many of my favorites are limited edition, so in this scenario, let’s pretend I also had the luck of the Irish on eBay!
    1. Shihan by Piotr Czarnecki (formerly Sensei). My favorite scent in the universe. Woods, tobacco, spices, incense, vanilla, and more.
    2. Coromandel in the new EdP formulation. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the EdT as well, but call me crazy – I have fallen more deeply in love with the sparkle of the new version.
    3. L’Artisan Parfumeur Fleur d’Oranger 2005. This limited edition perfume is incredibly sentimental to me and is the most perfect orange blossom perfume that has ever existed.
    4. Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab – Monsterbait:Underpants. This perfume is liquid gold and insanely hard to find. Vanilla, sandalwood, and saffron. The aroma is indescribable. Totally addictive, pure delight. I would be furious about losing it!

  10. This is hard! Chanel 1932, for sure. Shalimar Souffle, Tocca Colette, and….either MFK Lumiere Noire if I lost my collection in the cooler months or AT Eau d’Hadrian if it’s summer!

    • I really like 1932. Don’t know if I would rebuy it immediately, but I like it so much. Lumiere Noire pf would also be in the second tier of rebuys for me.

    • Ooh Yes Maggiecat! Seasonality would affect my choices too. Much as I love La Fille de Berlin, if it were the height of summer I’d probably be tempted to swap it for Le Jardin Sur Le Nil…

    1. Propellor bottle of Vol de Nuit – it’s my treasure.

    2. Ummmmm, not sure there is a #2. I’d pool the rest of the funds and get a vintage Après l’Ondee. And that would be me happy. But that isn’t playing by the rules….. so:

    3. Muschio by Santa Maria Novella
    4. Borneo 1834 by Serge Lutens

  15. 1. Vintage Opium, in quantity. Huge quantity.
    2. Mona di Orio Vanille. I still think it’s the most perfect dry vanilla out there, although I haven’t tried the stuff in the new bottle.
    3. Annick Goutal Songes edp. Again, the original formulation.
    4. Vintage Fracas parfum, because it makes me incredibly happy for some reason.
    After that, all the good white florals that I could get my hands on, then other stuff, and soon I would be back to the clutter that I have now 😉

    • You know, that was my thought too, that I could pare down to four and then would shortly be back to a (ahem) fuller collection.

      If I really tried hard, I could maybe make a collection of about 20 work for me. 🙂

  17. Well, there are 3 that would always make the list: Chanel 19, vintage Chanel Coco and Shalimar, which like many of us I have in various strengths and vintages. The fourth is kind of seasonal and very hard to choose: Winter= DSH Inner Sanctum, Spring = En Voyage Fiore di Bellagio, Summer = Seville l’Aube, Fall = Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser. For now, anyway.
    PS I just received a package of vintage perfumes I bought on a Facebook group and one is a mini of original Obsession parfum. Omg, it smells so good that my eyes rolled back in my head and I feel unable to do anything but sniff my arm. So different from the harsher modern version. Any other fans?

    1. PdN Le Temps d’une Fete. In whatever version I could find, but would love the older, richer, bottom-heavy version. Six bottles, please.
    2. Chanel No. 19. In EdP or vintage EdT. Maybe a bottle of each.
    3. Mary Greenwell Plum.
    4. Ralph Lauren Safari.

    And then my second tier of rebuys 😀 would include FM Iris Poudre, vintage Coty Emeraude PdT, MFK Lumiere Noire pf, and… crap. I’m going to need a third tier, for seasonal wear. Maybe a fourth and a fifth! So many I would miss if I didn’t replace them.

  22. The first three are easy:

    1. Mitsouko would also be my very first thought, without even pausing to think. Probably the EDP.
    2. Paul Schütze’s Tears of Eros. I can’t believe how much and how fast I grew to love this hyacinth beauty, all rich resiny incense and cold air. It gives me a lot of joy to wear this.
    3. A vintage Miss Dior edt, for strength and merciless beauty.

    the fourth is tricky: something calm? something pretty? something filthy? *another* chypre? something lush and pillowy? Hmm. Chergui, for the warm comfort?

    4. oh! of course… Mitzah. (and it would almost certainly take magic to get me a replacement bottle of this.)

    • If it’s any comfort to know, Mitzah is not discontinued as has been so often rumored – it’s just exclusive to Dior France. From time to time it’s been unavailable there but never for long, and the SAs over there promise that’s only due to ingredient acquisition when it does happen. I know I rest a little easier knowing there is actually more to be had. ❤

        • Cross my heart – I wouldn’t joke about the existence of Mitzah. Kurkdjian Absolue Pour le Soir is alive and well too, despite thre never ending rounds of discontinuation stories; it’s just exclusive to France and to the International (not U.S.) franciskurkdjian.com – and it’s much less including free shipping from them than it was when it was sold here. Hurrah!

        I’ve never been to the DIOR store in Paris but next time I will. Normally I buy my DIOR at Galleries Lafayette so I can be under he dome while shopping and they told me it was DCd.

        • People in the EU at least, idk about Oz or GB, can order it from Dior.com/fr even. It’s only ever in the larger size but that’s okay with me. Mitzah and Macron, I’m ready to move to Paris. =)

  27. This a real puzzler. If I had to decide right this moment my four would be

    Eau des Merveilles
    Hiris (I’m wearing it right now)
    Ambre Narguile
    Jour d’Hermes

    Each is pure comfort for me, and as a group these four have enough variety to make me feel content. Also one-stop shopping at Hermes makes it easy to get scented post-disaster.

    Vol de Nuit has a few mentions in these comments. I find it very comforting. If Hermes were closed my Guerlain list would be VdN, Cologne du 68, Jardins de Bagatelle, and Apres l’Ondee.

  28. It’s a hard question. Not because it’s difficult to choose my Top N perfumes but rather because those, without which I don’t want to ever be, are not perfumes that I wear often: they are “special occasions” perfumes for me so while my knee-jerk reaction is to get them, I realize that I wouldn’t want to wear them every day… Still, my first three would be definitely these:

    1. Lancome Climat (I have all possible concentrations and versions of it in my collection so I’d decide, which one of them to replace – if possible, a vintage one in perfect condition; if no – then La Collection EdP)

    2. Ormonde Jayne Ta’if in either concentration

    3. Amouage Ubar

    The forth one I chose because I like it a lot but would be able to wear more often, while re-building the rest of my collection 😉

    4. Tom Ford Fleur de Chine.

  30. I have not lost my fragrance collection but 2/3 is on the other side of the world, so I know exactly what I miss or deemed important enough to come with me! Right now this would be: Eau de Merveilles Bleu, Infusion d’Iris, Passage d’Enfer and Seville a l’aube.

    1. Azuree vintage by Estee Lauder…..in vatfuls ,please
    2. Aliage vintage by Estee Lauder…… huge quanities
    3. Madness by Chopard
    4. Narcisse Blanc by Caron in a vintage Baccarat bottle

    I think I need to hi with the things that are the most “me” and I couldn’t imagine being without
    1 vintage Rive Gauche
    2 Coromandel (in any format !)
    3 Knowing
    4 Interlude Man
    I think that Coco would be 5th….

  34. Wow! this is tough! For now I would say Reglisse Noire, Tibetan Mountain Temple, one of my Dames (maybe Black Flower Mexican Vanilla) and one of my Berdoues Grand Cru Colognes (maybe Assam of India).

  35. Well, my answer would vary depending on the season. Right now, summer, I’d choose Guerlain Initial Perfume (ok, GIP isn’t in my normal summer rotation but I’m not sure how many bottles are left and I would want it replaced a.s.a.p. – it’s my favorite flanker), AG Songes, Les Infusions d’Iris and Ann Gérard Ciel d’Opale. Those should hold me over until fall.

  36. What an awful thought – my perfume babies gone…but it’s a funny exercise and it was fun reading the answers. My choice would be:
    1. Armani, Giorgio Armani – vintage
    2. Jil Sander III – vintage
    3. Wrappings, Clinique
    4. Rush, Gucci
    This would cover all my moods and needs.

    It’s not a scenario I like to think about… but the four I would not want to be without are:
    – Dzongkha by L’Artisan Parfumeur – for calm
    – Journey Woman by Amouage – for opulence
    – Duel by Annick Goutal – for being understated
    And the fourth is a toss between Bandit by Robert Piguet or Rien by Etat Libre d’Orange – for being butch (hahaha… doubt I can ever pull that off)
