Hey there APJ,

One of the best things about being a perfumista is sharing the fun. Today Evan came over Ainslie Walker had given me a bunch of stuff to pass ages ago on but we’ve not been able to co-ordinate ourselves till today. There was also a hiatus where I had misplaced the goodies.

Found them now and Evan was free so today it was.

Evan Came Over For A Sniff

Here we are as Evan arrived. We knew we were on a time budget so I snapped away quickly.

I thought we could meet some vintage DIOR fragrances. I brought out my best preserved of the earliest I have:

Here is Evan. His nose is blown, and his mind.
Then I kicked him out, ran to my computer to write this and now I’m of to get ready for work.

Evan has also agreed to try writing for APJ, you’ll be seeing him around here a bit.

Do you even get together with friends to sniff stuff?

  1. Not since I booted my “best” friend of 32 years out of my life. All my other frag friends live out of state. I have met a friend from Pennsylvania once and plan to again in October. We each drive an hour.We sniff and swap and mail each other stuff.

  4. I am sooooo jealous of that vintage Dioressence you have there! I did find a vintage edc version of Miss Dior a few years back though. For a mere EUR 5. This is not a typo… only 5 eurodollardinares… am wearing it today actually, how coincidental is that!
    As for sniffing stuff (initially read that as “sniff snuff”), i am very lucky to have found someone in my own home town who is as obsesses as i am, and who has even been making a living of her obsession! I am too lazy for that though. Too bad her website is in Dutch only, otherwise i’d be plugging it shamelessly!

      So nice you have a sniffing companion. I love how different people get different pieces of the fragrant puzzle from the same scent, one the same arm, on the same day. It really broadens my experience.

  5. Wow! i am blown away by your collection (and i know it is much larger!) Curious how you got your mitts on full size bottles of SSS?

    I have a childhood friend of almost 50 years and when we get together several times a year there is usually some sniffing going on…for my bday this year I met her in NYC and we spent the entire day walking up 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue…by the end of the day we were reeking-LOL! The SA in Malle made such a face when we walked in…but then she was gracious enough to give each of us a sample when I told her it was my bday.

      A few years ago regulations were not so tight and things could be sent much more easily. There was a sale on one of the US sites and I bought those.
      50 years!! That is an amazing friendship. How lucky you both are.

  6. Fabulous! Right now, I’d be most excited about sniffing the vintage Dior as I’m obsessed with the Miss Dior you generously gifted me.
    I hadn’t even considered the fun we’d have with perfume when I visit, Portia.
    I mostly only get to go perfume sampling when Val comes over, but we make up for lost time.

  7. Jealous, I am. Very.

    For years I bored friends and family with my perfume talk. Glazed-over eyes all around me. Eventually I learned to can it, but it was hard. And kind of lonely.

    Now though, with the internet, and with your site especially Portia, I no longer feel that aloneness. And I’m quite fulfilled just reading of your passions, and those of others in your APJ family, only occasionally feeling the need to enthuse or even remark.

  8. We have just started our group, and it is so wonderful when you first start chatting to other perfumistas, I have to curtail my verbal diarrhea!
    I have to say, my husband is hugely tolerant of my enthusiasm, and has been known to come inside Jovoy and talk to sales people. I love him.

  9. It is always a pleasure to visit your place for a sniff. As usual my nose & head were blown away. All the vintages were so good. Dioressence, Dune & Miss Dior were my favourite. Poison reminded me my mother. Its been a while I haven’t touch her. But unconsciously I felt her presence around me (hallucination).
    It was fun yesterday. I enjoyed my time. Hopeful we catch up soon.

  11. I do not get to share my perfume passion with friends too often for multiple reasons (it happens from time to time though, so I won’t complain 🙂 ). But the most fun I usually have when I meet perfumista friends because with them I’m not afraid to overwhelm them 🙂
