Hi APJ,

It’s weird. Many fragrances I write about, fall in love with and buy a large decant or bottle. Sometimes it feels like I’m keeping the perfume world solvent, HA! Then you all never hear about that perfume again  unless it’s in my Sunday Scent Diary, and then just a tiny entry or picture. So today I thought we’d gran out some things that have been written about before and still see regular skin time.

Afternoon Of A Faun by Etat Libre d’Orange:

There is something deeply satisfying when I spritz Afternoon Of A Faun. It’s a honeyed immortelle, leather, iris and peppery spices smell like nothing else in my collection. One of the last really fabulous, love to wear even though it’s a bit freaky, releases from the ELdO house. It’s like they have taken the late 20th century mens fragrance and twisted just enough to make it interesting again.

Aqua Allegoria Lys Soleia by Guerlain:

Wearing this beauty today inspired the post. I read the fragrance quite differently to the notes presented. My skin throws lily and creamy coconut mixed with the ylang. A tropical scent using all the old tropes but injects an airy freshness and a jaunty lilt. Well into my second bottle and a back up bought just in case. On cool but sunny days like today, boiling summer heatwaves and even the dead cold of european winter Lys Soleia works.

Antaeus by CHANEL:

Antaeus is often a sneaky spritz for me as I go walking the dogs or shopping for groceries. I think I’ve told you all before that my first long term partner and I wore Antaeus in the late 1980s and early 1990s. There is something so classic and finished about it, from picking up the black, super smooth reflective bottle to the earthy leather dry down. The whole experience feels special.

 

Madame Rochas by Rochas:

Rochas answer to CHANEL No 5 is a clever play on the aldehydic floral. A thicker, more treacle feeling opening. Yellow flowers feel like the centre of attention and the iris, amber and oakmoss create an earthier, less outer space type fragrance. Madame Rochas manages a similar sparkling glamour as No 5 but does it in a more perfumey way. It manages to cut the aloofness and feel like a Christmas hug from a favourite aunt.

Morn to Dusk by Eau D`Italie:

Yes, it lasts all day. The jolt of citrus over vanilla starts this beauty out with a zing but it’s the vanilla heart that goes on all day long. A crunchy, caramelised vanilla that changes with your mood and the weather. Some days it’s more sheer and weightless and others Morn To Dusk can be sweet, thick and heavy. It seems to feel my mood and offer its own magical accompaniment. Simplicity with levels.

  3. Oh, I love Antaeus! A boyfriend wore in the 80s and I liked a little spritz for myself too. I still wear Givenchy Organza on the regular. My husband and I were in Chicago when it made it’s debut at Saks and it was everywhere, he bought me a bottle on the spot. A couple Donna Karan’s that I wear a lot are Black and Gold edp.

  6. YSL Opium (vintage), my first big love in perfume, signature for a decade at least -during a time I only had about five perfumes, is still in my wardrobe. I adore it but rarely wear it, it refers to a time which is definitely over for me. 🙂

      My BFFs mum wears vintage Opium exclusively. It’s getting more and more expensive to keep her in her 100ml per year addiction. It’s fun searching.

  8. This one took some thinking about. Safari is one I vowed I’d never buy in reformulation ever again. Third bottle later… I guess I still must love it. I cannot justify the vintage prices. And I wore it DAILY from 1996 til 2002.

    Youth Dew is another. As silly as it sounds, I am never without a back up bottle. I probably go through more oil than perfume.

    Arpege. Such a complex beauty. I think I’ll wear that today. And yes, a back up bottle is tucked away.

    • Oh gosh, Safari is to die for!!!! How does current formulation compare to vintage? I am tempted to buy a bottle…I also wore it in the 1990s…

    • hey Kate fab choices re the Youth Dew and Arpege….both scents I love, but do not wear because my mum wears Arpege and my mother in law wore Youth dew. Safari, on the other hand I never really paid any attention to.

      Was that the original Victoria’s Secret? So many people remember that one with affection. I never smelled it. BUM.

      • Yup…that one…could not even tell you the notes as their is virtually no information on it…but the bottle was gorgeous and the scent was divine…I got so many compliments from men whenever I wore it!

  10. I love the sound of some of those Portia! I loved Jean Patou 1000 in the 80’s and had a large bottle. It was expensive so I felt very special wearing it. I bought a bottle recently and even though it’s not as rich and luxurious as the original, it still takes me back to a great time in my life when I wear it now.

    • Hey there Sue,
      You can often find a vintage 7.5ml Patou 1000 parfum in the green bottles unopened for around the same price as a current 100ml. It’s well worth the search and will blow your mind.

  12. For me, it would have to be Estée Lauder Private Collection, it’s the only one that I’ve had continuously since the 80s. I love the reformulation as much as the original now (not at first though). Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune by Guerlain would be a close second as I’ve worn it since it was released and can’t be without it.

    • Good to hear that the reformulation is still good. I saw it the other day in a perfumery and I hesitated because of the bad experience with reformulated perfumes that I loved. Unfortunately they have only one wrapped bottle and I cannot try it.

  15. The Afternoon of a Faun is on my to-buy list for a while now. I like its retro vibe and it’s so comforting.
    There are always my vintages I crave for every now and then: the first Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander III, YSL Paris…and then there are other beauties that I wear seasonally – Clinique Wrappings in the first days of spring, Feminite du Bois in autumn and Dzing in winter.

  16. OJ woman and safran troublant are always at the top. They are an enjoyable sensory experience but more than that they feel like me.
    The original gucci also, it has this awesome synthetic cumin inflected orange blossom thing thats just weird but i love it.
