Hi APJ,

I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.

SOTD 6 – 12 November 2017

The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:
Guerlain Mitsouko EdT
Pharrell Williams Girl
The Different Company Oriental Lounge
Vintage Fendi original
Vintage YSL Opium EdT
Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.

We didn’t get 100 responses last week so no winner.

Go To It Crew.

  1. As we get cooler temps I start rotating through my ambers including samples. Ambre Narguile from a dabber today. I find it to be lovely but fleeting on my skin- I’m sure spraying would be more successful.

    • Yeah, you need to spritz it. Much better scent life. It becomes infinitely more flamboyant too MmkinPA.

    • I was thinking about getting some Ambre Narguile — have you found it similar to other ambers? I’ve started collecting them but found many to be too harsh.

    • What other vetivers would you recommend, P? Right now the only vetiver I actually like is Phlur’s Greylocke which combines it with a pine resin that makes it chewy and appealing to me.

      • Oh there is. The EdP is much much more like a sprayable version of the parfum. Next time in Vienna I’ll cover myself in it and see. will keep you posted. And half way through? I seldom get half way through anything. 😃

  3. Today I am testing a vintage Karl Lagerfeld KL Homme that a friend sent me. It’s like a subdued, powdery Opium that dries down to amber and civet. Mmmmm.

  4. Wearing my tiny sample of Guerlain Lui today. It’s very pretty and reminds me of Chanel No. 5. But for that very reason I don’t really need it, so I’ll use up my sample and enjoy the scent for what it is.
(don’t enter me in the draw please!)

  5. Considering the date, and my weather of late, I’m thinking that Spring has not sprung at all this year!!! Waking up to temps of between 1 and 4 degrees C and struggling to reach 12 to 16 degrees C I’m still firmly looking for ‘warmth’ in my selection of fumes. Yesterday was Guerlain’s SDV {a sample} and today will be 10 wild spritzes of vintage Samsara.

  6. Monday I wore Nasomatto’s Pardon by mistake. I was reaching for Black Afgano and pulled out the wrong box. Once I saw, I thought “what he hell” and sprayed Pardon anyway. It’s one of the better chocolate-y fragrances that I have, and always welcome in cool weather.

Today is Richard James Savile Row. Possibly the ugliest bottle ever designed, but a hugely under-rated fragrance. It’s proof that you can do a masculine tuberose without making the wearer smell like his widowed great-aunt. Naturally, it was discontinued because the men aren’t allowed to have nice things. 😉

  7. I just got a bottle of Fancy Nights. I don’t think I’ll wear it to work, but I squirt with abandon when I get home! Also over my bed. Love the drydown and price!

  8. This Tuesday I’m wearing Dusita La Douceur de Siam. It’s not raining or too cold-crisp today though we are in the midst of fall, so I can just barely get away with it but wanted a sniff. Roses, fresh, spring, green, dewey roses. My skin really amplifies that though this is supposed to represent the flowers and spices of Thailand, my spiritual homeland I’m sure.
The violet leaf carries the rose, and then softly in the background is the frangiopani, champaca, then a whisper of ylang. I do not pick up much else, and it’s so fresh and rose-like with a bit of a tea note in the drydown.
I’m putting away until spring after today, but for now will spritz with abandon as needed! It’s a lovely, light beauty, and I heartily recommend for rose lovers as it’s not particularly tropical on me. Low silage, good longevity.

  9. Yesterday it seemed like the perfect day for Amouage Epic Woman. I had not worn it in a couple of months and I love that feeling of smelling an old favourite again after a while, like greeting an old friend, familiar and yet somehow new again. Today I’m keeping myself scentless, (well almost) because I have a package coming in the mail today and I’m excited to put that on. Blind buy of Dame perfumery Narcissus perfume oil. I’ve read so much about it, I think I’ll really like it, hope so anyway. Even if I don’t the anticipation has been pretty fun. If I do, I’m ordering another from them, this time it will be Black Flower Mexican Vanilla

    • Dame Narcissus is gorgeous but very potent..you really need to love narcissus as a note. It reminds me so very much of DvF Tatiana from the 1970s. Black Flower Mexican Vanilla is equally as fantastic as is Dark Horse. I recently got to try Earth Mother and was smitten. Jeffrey Dame not only makes very wearable and accessible and affordable perfumes he is also a really lovely human being. I hope Portia will do more reviews from this house 🙂

I love Jeffrey and will do some more reviews for him. I keep not buying his sample pack because I have such a backlog here .

  10. Tuesday evening I spritzed with joyful abandon Nikki st Phalle EDT after using the shower gel of same name. It instantly transported me back to the glorious sunshine of Noosa. I’m writing at 7AMish on Wednesday morning, smelling only very faint trails of Nikki.
    SOTD Wednesday….undecided.

  11. SOTD- combo of Phlur Hepcat and Moab…it is so cold today and I am really liking this pairing of tobacco, oud, vetiver, spices and cinnamon! The Moab has a very Taueresque vibe to my nose.

  12. Today was commando. Woke early with the opening discordant jangling of the migraine that’s been threatening for two days, hovering around the edges of my eyesight and making life a bit blurry and swoopy. I couldn’t deal with any sensory input, so hid in the dark until it subsided. Ugh. I loathe migraines.

Yesterday was lashings of cuir cannage. (Autocorrect is insistent that this should be “churning cabbage”) Gorgeousness. Though there’s slightly too much iris at the front for it to be a true love. That grey fuzz just doesn’t sit quite right on me. But, it fades down soon enough and behaves beautifully.

    • Migraines are YUK Crikey,
Cuir Cannage on the other hand is freaking beautiful. That iris makes the whole fragrance vibrate beautifully for me, like it’s keeping the sweet honest.

  15. The sun peeked out from behind the clouds a bit today and the temperature crept into the twenties, so I reached for a cologne. I went with Floris Cefiro on a whim. It’s nothing special and there are many more EdCs in my collection that I rate ahead of this one.

  17. Well the Narcissus arrived and it is stunning!!! Smells like what I remember the real flower smells like. I haven’t smelled the real thing in about 8 months, but it smells great. There is a great beeswax smell underneath the narcissus that drifts up too. Dame perfumery included about 6 samples with my order so today I’m wafting Monsoon on one wrist and Dark Horse on the other. Oh dear!!! I really like them both.

    Like

    • Oh yes, the Narcissus is swoon worthy if you like that note. I am so impressed with the offerings from Dame. Jeffrey is one of my all time favorite perfumers. and he is incredibly generous!! What else did you get in sample besides the Monsoon and Dark Horse? Black Flower Mexican Vanilla is also a great one…hope that was included in your sample pack.

      • Well today I tried out Osmanthus on one wrist and Earth Mother on the other. Neither one was great for me. I’ve never smelled Osmanthus in real life so have no idea how the soliflore compares to the real thing. The only other experience I’ve had with Osmanthus as a note is in Osmanthus Yunnan by Hermes and that didn’t work well for me either so maybe I just don’t care for Osmanthus? I also got Chocolate and Musk in my package. My favourite from the samples has been Monsoon. I really really like that one and can see myself buying some. I’ve already put in an order for the Vanilla so I’m hoping I can try out that one in a couple of weeks.

  18. It is cold and rainy today so I needed something to brighten my day. I used Alba Botanica’s Midnight Tuberose in the shower this morning and then followed that with Carnal Flower. It was a good choice and gave me some of that sunshine the day itself was missing 🙂

  21. Thursday morning here, bright, sunny day and expecting about 32 celsius.
Despite this, as I thought it might be a little rich, I spritzed Gucci Guilty from a sample I haven’t tried before. Dabbed about 90 mins ago and couldn’t smell it; have just re-applied. And I can’t smell it – again!
Humph! Might try again later. Perhaps I am anosmic to it. Reapplying yet again may put others at risk!

  22. Thursday morning and I am going with Monsoon again today after testing it last night. It is a bit odd but I need to try it again because the drydown is fantastic….I like to give fragrances more than one shot when sampling.

      • Definitely! Also, i like to test across seasons…case in point Absolue Pour le Soir smells like dirty women’s panties in the winter (skank bomb) but in the summer it blooms into this resinous, honeyed amber and is to die for.

  32. Chergui for me today, to soften the sharp cold of a dark early morning start.

And my curiosity got the better of me–at lunchtime I was pottering about and decided to have a sniff of Dent de Lait. I got some over my fingers when I sprayed a card, and it was creeping me out all afternoon at work as I kept bumping into a smell I wasn’t expecting. Part of it is so bland it’s offensive, and part of it is so weird it’s fascinating (anaesthetics and cling-film).

  33. Yesterday, {Friday} I ended up wearing Il Bacio….It simply bloomed on my skin and I received 3 unsolicited compliments..2 from work colleagues and the third from a patient. I have decided though ,that I won’t wear it to work anymore, due to wishing to keep it as the scent I associate with Love and Romance…..After all ,it was my Wedding Scent.
Saturday is warm again, although won’t see much of it having to work this arvo. Thinking I might wear Mahora

  35. I spent too much of today surrounded by the smell of flatulent egg-eating demons and ancient vase water. (I was using a colour stripper on my hair, as it will NOT wash out enough to get a palette change, but is too faded to be the saturated insanity I want. This stuff smells appalling, and I had to use two boxes of the stuff because of the length of my hair. Double dose of stinkage!)

Now that’s gone, I’m still pondering what to wear to make sure my evening is spent with some gorgeousness to counterbalance that…
