Hi APJ,
I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.
SOTD 27 November – 3 December 2017
The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:
- Guerlain Vol de Nuit Evasion
- Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur
- Tauer Un Rose Chypree
- Rochas Madame Rochas (vintage)
- Mona di Orio Carnation
Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.
LAST WEEKS WINNER!! Melanie

Today we had a cooler spell and I ended up wearing Musc Ravageur. This is very classy, but I really think it’s just too vanilla-y and powdery for me. I’d go FB on a lot of the Malle line if I had the cash, but not this one.

Oh Greg,
NOOOOO, this is one of my Malle faves. Oh well, more for me.

Another one I haven’t tried. (Well, that list is endlessly long!) I like the vanilla-y but less interested in the powdery.

Feeling like so many of my bottles are neglected, so another random.org selection from the spreadsheet row numbers. Annick Goutal Grand Amour EDP. The opening of this is a little sharp (maybe the lily, which is a tough note for me) but it very quickly becomes so beautiful. It needs to move to the front of the tray!

Today I’m wearing Cafe Tuberosa by Atelier Cologne. When I read about this on the blogs I was intrigued. But when I heard the notes list I wasn’t sure. It contains some notes I love and some I’m wary of. And when I sprayed it on a card at Sephora, I immediately thought “no way!” This isn’t going to work for me. But the nice SA made a sample for me, and I brought it home and wore it yesterday and today. It IS absolutely beautiful and intriguing, and I am in love! This is so good. I haven’t had much luck with this line before though my dealings with the company have been stellar. So I am very happy to have found one of their fragrances I love so much.

After shower applied my homemade vanilla bean body oil to which I added a touch of orange essential oil and sandalwood oil (I made this blend especially for an APJ commenter and will hopefully get it to the post to her today…
and now, Mitsouko EDT…ten years ago I gifted away a half used bottle to a perfumista friend who absolutely adored it…now that I am wearing it again, I can see why!
Hope everyone has a pleasant Monday.

Cuir de Russie today.
I’m starting to get a little nervous about the less than 10ml remaining of old EDT (circa 2005). Any thoughts on the new EDP? Should I just grit my teeth and empty my wallet for the extrait instead? Is it glorious?
LikeLike
Hey Crikey I have the same dilemma with my darling Bel Respiro. I only have about 10ml left and I’ve been slowly savouring it because I don’t know what will have been done to it in the reformulation to EDP. I think I would definitely want to try it before rebuying it.
LikeLike
There often seem to be “fell off the back of a lorry” testers of Bel Respiro showing up on eBay, at least in the UK. Sometimes even the big 200ml ones. I’ve been stalking them for a while. Becauae while I love BR, it vanishes on me unless I drench myself, at which point it stays almost all day. So it makes it hard to consider paying full price for it. (I’ll probably hold out for duty free on the CDR, and really have to test the edp version first.)

I love the new EDP.

I find that the birch tar in CdR EDT is stronger and the EDP is more floral, but I love them both. Also, I tried the parfum on once, and loved that too. Basically I’m a CdR fan.

Off for an early morning doctor appt. so didn’t want to stink out the office. Just wearing a discreet spritz of Guerlain’s Mandarin Basilic. I’ve just emptied my 2nd bottle of that and have been testing a couple of other similar ones before I buy a 3rd. In the running were Malle’s Bigarade Concentree (Adore but can’t afford given the lavish way I want to use it), Atelier’s Orange Sanguine (Very Good but something about it just gets irritating after a few hours) and Hermes Eau de Orange Vert ( Very Good but a tad too bitter for me, again I’m tired of it before it’s tired of me haha)
so another bottle of Madarin Basilic it is!!
LikeLike
I happen to like Orange Sanguine and don’t mind the irritating drydown..that initial blast is so worth it…have you tried any others from the Atelier line? I also like Cedrat Enivrant and others have written favorable about Clementine California..and given my sweet tooth I also like the one made initially for Canadians which I think Sephora now sells…its a citrus with a very sweet maple syrup note which I assume comes from immortelle…Citrus D”Erable I think is the name. Some of the large Ateliers sell for a very good price online so you could use them lavishly. There is also good old 4711. And I also recommend Berdoues Grand Cru Assam of India…incredibly refreshing with a nice sandalwood in the base.

It’s so interesting how different perfumes hit different peoples like and dislike buttons isn’t it? I have a friend who’s absolute fav vanilla is Tauer’s vanilla flash, which I gave to her because while I love it initially, I can’t bear the sweet tobacco that comes out after awhile and of course it seems to come out much more on me than on her. Black Flower Mexican vanilla however, total opposite, she likes it, especially on me but on her after wearing for awhile there is a note that comes out that doesn’t work for her, yet we both really like Atelier’s Vanilla. Maybe one reasons there’s so many versions of essential the same them out there.

Yes there is so much that can influence how a perfume can read on different skin…but I also find that the seasons factor in as well which is why I like to test things year round…and even perfumes that would appear to be for a certain season can come off as quite lovely and different in the opposite season that it is intended for.

Random pick of the day is row 214, L de Lolita Lempicka. From my early days when everything needed some vanilla. This one has lots.
LikeLike
I think it was Arielle Shoshana that observed a striking similarity between Malle’s Musc Ravageur and L de Lempicka, both being by Maurice Roucel and both exploring a common kind of warm vanilla, cinnamony goodness. Makes me wonder if you’d also like the Malle. I’ve run out of the bit of both I had but often go to bed in Givenchy’s Organza Indecence which has a similar orangey/vanilla,cinnamon thing going. Less subtle though, kind of hit you over the head with a big cinnamon stick kinda way

Yes, there are similarities, namely the cinnamon as best as I can remember. L de Lolita is as rare as hen’s teeth now. Unless you want to spend fortunes on eBay. I should have stocked up when it was plentiful and relatively cheap.

Hi SonomaVelvet. I was browsing Luckyscent and the bottles caught my eye so I checked them out. Rodrigo Flores-Roux is the perfumer and since he created Arquiste Flor y Canto and Ella, both of which I love, I added a couple of Xinu samples. OroNardo is lovely but may be too short-lived. Copala is the other one. Sniffing it from the wand in the vial, it might be a resin I actually like. The resin is obvious and after a while,I sniff something I really like but am not familiar with, maybe mesquite? I will try it on skin later tonight. Fingers crossed.

It took me three days to get the bottle open: it was locked solid on the ground glass stopper, with dried up perfume gluing it shut. I spent three days feeling thwarted, and guilty for wasting money buying a perfume I’d never get to smell. Horrible luck.
And then it finally popped open. I was so surprised I almost dropped it.
A dinky 7.5ml bottle, almost completely full. It was so entirely sealed up there’s been no evaporation. 45 quid. Aye, not bad luck after all. Brightest spot in a tough week.
It’s heavenly.
