Hi APJ,

I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.

SOTD 11 – 17 December 2017

The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)

This week:

  1. Neela Vermeire Creations Pichola
  2. Hermès Monsieur Li
  3. Bogue Gardelia
  4. Guerlain Meteorites
  5. Vintage Bal a Versailles EdT

Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.

LAST WEEKS WINNER: JackieB

  1. SHALIMAR! Oodles and oodles of Shalimar EdP and vintage parfum. I smell Ah May Zing in this fuggy humid heat.

    • I cannot do Shalimar in heat–only on the crisp fall days, snowy winter ones, and rainy-day spring days. I love it though and have a sticky thick vintage from 1960–Heaven.

      Like

    • oooh, I love Shalimar. Often in my bath, and often my bedtime comfort scent. What’s interesting is it took me literally years to learn to love it. So many times I would try it when browsing and just couldn’t bear the opening. Not sure why I kept trying but I did and one day…. Wow!!

      Like

      • That is EXACTLY what happened with me! Now it is ultimate comfort scent and touch of luxury. Have you tried the body cream?

        Like

    • I wore Shalimar in the 70s….the mother of my childhood best friend of 50 years received a bottle of Shalimar as a gift, never wore it and gifted it to me as she knew I loved perfume. I need to get my nose on some again. How does current formulation compare to vintage?

      Like

      • If you haven’t smelled it in a while you will only notice how clean it smells compared to the past. Still excellent. If you remember the past well then go for the EdC, it has the best old school smell to my nose CM.

Today as soon as I got up, in the heatwave, I doused myself in Shalimar Cologne and felt instantly better.

  3. Trying DSH Fleurs de Soleil today. It’s a pretty scent but it disappeared very quickly on my skin. Yesterday I tried DSH Vanilla Bourbon Intense. Didn’t get the Bourbon at all but got a nice vanilla incense, in fact more incense than vanilla. It was a past holiday scent and seems just perfect for that.

  4. Patricia de Nicolai Vanille Tonka today. This is so good, and quite strong, doesn’t take much and it wafts around me for at least 8 or 9 hours. So much so, I have to be careful when I’m going to being working close to people. Love it, and happily, even though I only have a bit left in my first bottle she’s still making this one, so I’ll be able to get more.

  5. Yesterday, late in the day I retried Figment Woman, inspired by Greg’s trials. I remembered why I had put it in the ‘not for me’ pile. I don’t find white flowers to be the main quality for me, I could only wish. There is something cool and sweet and fruity (fig?) in the beginning with the flowers, I don’t read as flowers really, just a kind of plushness with lots of white musk. As it fades it reminds me of MDCI Nuit de Andalouse and Histoire’s 1969. Not that they smell the same, just the way the musk makes the scent plush or pillowy. As it fades more, all I get is monstrous amounts of that musk, very like Narciso in the square pink bottle. Not for me.

    • What a shame SonomaVelvet. That NR musk is heavenly for me. I rarely wear it but LOVE smelling people in the street in it.

      • You know Portia, I actually like it too. I like it on others and I like it at first on me, but it really lasts for quite a long time on me, and I don’t know if it’s some kind of olfactory illusion or something but it seems to get bigger and bigger and after awhile I’m just done with it but it’s not done with me. If only jasmine and orange blossom would do that to me haha

  11. I’ve got a day off so after getting to the post office and finding two perfume packages for me I am super happy. Wearing four things at once because I have no patience!
Tom Ford oud Wood – very soft on me, I’m almost thinking water/marine, might need a more on. worthy of a top up.
Tom Ford tobacco vanille – liking it better three hours after first spray. First thought was no but it’s more chocolate now. Have a dear very charming male friend who it might suit better!
Juliette has a gun anyway – it’s ok but it’s bit floral for me, musky violets? Thought I’d picked her midnight oud one – that’s what happens when you in a hurry.
And lucky last, montale vanille absolu which is awesome! Fantastic replacement for Tokyo milk Bittersweet which is discontinued. Chocolate, vanilla and little spicy as it wears on. Love love love.
Now, I told myself I couldn’t play with my perfumes again until I have finished some stuff at home. I’m about to melt dark chocolate and dip pretzels for my nieces and nephews for treat later today. Then red velvet cupcakes, oh and boring old washing!
Love reading how different the weather is around our world. Wish it was snowing here – we are about to get roasted for next few days.

      Like

      • There is something odd about it ….maybe the calamus or maybe the fig? It is not your typical fig…it almost borders on that rotten fruit to my nose and it has sweetness (but then again lots of stuff turns very sweet on my skin). I was told, however, that I smell good so I guess it is agreeing with my skin chemistry. If you want to try some down the line just let me know.

  22. When I first tried Epic Woman I ran to the bathroom and scrubbed it off, and wondered why anyone would ever put that in a bottle and sell it :):) and yet, in a strange kind of horrid fascination I tried it several more times, mostly ending with washing off. Good thing Amouage gives generous samples because one day I tried it again and was entranced and fell in love and paid an exorbitant amount of money for a big bottle of it and it’s been one of my dear loves ever since. So today, I enjoy a fragrant ride of plush cinnamony sandalwoody goodness that morphs and changes, one minute sort of creamy, the next a little rosy, the next a hint of whatever it was that made me run screaming the first few times ?oud, something a little bitter/sour that to me now makes the whole thing fascinating. Makes me wonder if we need a little winter to not take summer for granted and vice versa, or a little dark so that we continue to perceive the light by it’s contrast, to act like a frame in a way.

This is warm, vanilla, musk, soft rose. Chocolate? Sugar? its sweet up close and i can get the rose but wafting around me is creamy vanilla and musk. Very glad i picked this one.

    • I wore Cinnabar in the early 80s…haven’t smelled it in years…you smell fantastic! Such a great cold weather scent. Next time I am in a dept store I will have to give it a whiff.

      Like

      • The current Cinnabar is imo sadly a ghost of it’s former self. I’ve heard passing reviews from people who never encountered it in the past, but I’ve been wearing it since it came out in the late 70s (with a brief dry period when store bought became unwearable for me and eBay was not yet on my horizon) so I’m spoiled. I love it enough that I’m known to wear it in summer too – it actually kind of blooms in the heat, much like vintage Opium – but a winter without it would just be missing a piece. =)

      • Ah yes, the dreaded reformulations. Maybe I won’t revisit it then. This is how I feel about Chanel Cristalle. The vintage with top notes intact (which does not exist anymore) was sublime. Current reformulation just isn’t the same.

    • I had an Earth Mother EDP decant, Earth Mother body cream and Earth Mother hair oil (which I still have a bit of). Out of the three the hair oil is my favorite and I use it as both a perfume oil and body oil. I did finish up the EDP decant but out of the three Earth Mother products liked it the least. I find that sometimes the scents are slightly different in different products (body creams vs edp, etc.). The Earth Mother EDP was a tad too sweet for me (believe it or not 🙂 !!)

    • Safran T is gorgeous…the first time I tried it many years ago all I got was cumin..but I was gifted a 15ml decant not that long ago and my skin picked up very little cumin and lots of saffron, rose and vanilla…I used up that decant in the blink of an eye and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I am wondering now if I am getting used to cumin in perfume as I have grown to love L’Air du Desert Marocain and Absolue Pour le Soir and I am pretty sure that they both have cumin in them.

(My father was beautifully cared for in a dementia unit at a nursing home for his final three years, and your note makes me think of a lady there who was impossibly glamorous. Like my Pa, she was considerably past the stages that allowed for sequential language. And I loved that the staff took the time to get her so impeccably turned out, complete with her jewellery and lipstick and hair done, and her pretty silk scarves. It was clear how much pleasure this gave her, and she would sit and admire her painted nails for hours at a time. I wonder if she got a wee dab of scent to go with that…)

  39. It has been a strange week for me in many ways. So, I spent yesterday lulling myself into calm zen by reorganising my fumes. It took the whole bloody day. I STILL didn’t catalogue them. And now I have a ‘must use’ shelf that I awoke to this morning, wondering why I thought they were a good idea. I had to rummage around for Coco cos I felt like it. Then I wanted my Allure Sensuelle shower gel and had to unpack half the ‘do not use’ carton to find it. My brain isn’t boss of me, however much it may have superior powers. This is what it does to me. Much better my heart determine my perfumed life.

I’ve reached out for a hodge podge of stuff, plus spent some time researching things for Teone. The biggest shock of my life is how much I adore Poison Girl edt. I got a small bottle given by a female who didn’t like it. As I have the edp, she thought I may enjoy it. YES! I DO!

I have also been craving some Chanels. No idea why.

I’ve not wanted any of my niche stuff. Not in the mood for them.

But I have been opening some of my forgotten unopened bottles I’ve hoarded.

    Strange week.
