Hi APJ,

I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.

SOTD 18 – 24 December 2017

The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:

  1. Aftelier Perfumes: Parfum de Maroc
  2. Leone Reinthal: Antarctica
  3. Guerlain: Shalimar (vintage extrait)
  4. Ex Nihilo: Fleur Narcotique
  5. CHANEL No 19 (vintage EdC)

Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.

LAST WEEKS WINNER: Cassieflower

  1. I am in Guerlain L’Instant de Guerlain today. I am feeling sick and wrapped myself in this rich warm vanilla blanket of comfort.

  2. Today I went to DJs and sampled Noir de Noir on card, but really want to try it properly.
    Dark and rosey and classy.
Later I sprayed Tauer L’Oudh on my skin and was surprised how authentic and delicious it is. And still hanging in many hours later!

    • Hey JackieB,
Do you ever take in your own sample vials and ask the SA if you can spritz so you can try at home away from all the smells of the beauty floor? They’re usually pretty good about it.

  3. I have been into the lighter ones the last few days as it has been so hot. The last was The Body Shop’s Japanese Cherry Blossom and I find that it doesn’t have a lot of staying power. This seems to be a common problem for me with The Body Shop EDTs and Avons. I’m still looking for fabulous summer fragrances. Must pull out my Eaudemoiselle de Givenchy, as I remember this being good for summer, as is Jil Sander’s Style Pastels Tender Green, and Yardley’s English Rose.
Tonight I had a quick, carded spritz of Tiffany at DJs – I didn’t realise they had it there – and quite liked it, but I have seen so many of these for sale on sites like Gumtree, which surprises me for such a new fragrance.

    • Hey Sue,
That is interesting about the Tiffany fragrance. I wonder why they are there so quick. Maybe the journalists who get all the early releases are offloading them?

  5. SOTD is my newly purchased bottle (as a holiday gift to myself) of Aesop Hwyl. It’s smoky, lots of incense and vetiver. It’s rather quiet, but seems to be long lasting, and after 5 hours I can still smell it on myself from time to time. (I did spray a lot though.)

    • JH, I’ve read about this one and as I don’t find Marrakech amazing, I’m keen to try this one. Sounds lovely with all the incense. I’ll go try some, cheers Melanie

“The toothpaste is fluoride-free and includes a range of spaces, with spearmint being used alongside more surprising ingredients such as cardamom, anise and even wasabi extract.”

        Is Hwyl a summer scent?

  8. Last week I wore Noir Epices by the son and now I’m indulging in Le Perfume de Therese by the father. I guess I love the Rouditska’s. I don’t dare wear this one too often because my nose seems to grow accustomed to it so quickly and it disappears for me quite quickly. But if I wait a month or 2 between wearings Oh my my, so worth it.

    • That’s weird SonomaVelvet, I thought that LPdT was one of those frags that changed and morphed so often it was impossible to become anosmic. What a bummer.

      • Ha! As I’ve only got a complliment on my Black Oud when someone hugs me I figure it’s ‘quiet’. My new aoud scents don’t seem to project out much. Lack of comments makes me think so.
Now if I wear Florabotanica or Coco Mademoiselle – boom! I can scent up the stairwell or photocopier corner or coffee shop easy peasy 😉

    • Yes- thanks for the recipe. Sounds amazing. I’d never think to have vanilla, sandalwood AND lemon in the one blend. Fab idea!

      • The lemon brings out the brightness in the rose but it also blends beautifully with vanilla alone…in the summer I have made body oils with just vanilla +lemon or vanilla +orange….delicious! (if you like gourmands) Vanilla + sandalwood create a “woody pudding” accord to my nose which I like too.

Anywho, I picked it up because it reminded me of Thailand. Their is only a tiny bit left in the travel bottle so I thought I’d put it on today cos I’m home sick and I’ll probably put something over it later.

Anyway, its very nice! I like it! Definitely Thailand in a bottle – not India. Though I haven’t been to India so thats why it doesnt have THOSE associations. Its happy and fresh. I wonder if I could get a bigger decant somehow.

  16. House on Fire by Imaginary Authors. I have two fairly decent-sized samples and I really like it but I don’t think I’d go full bottle on it. It smells a little bit like Bactine, band-aids, oudh, and smoke followed by berries, suede, patchouli. It becomes an oudh, suede, berry scent in the drydown. I like the house, however, and admire their marketing. Sometimes I am a sucker for that!

      • I enjoyed it more when I first tried it. It is very unique in the acquatic category, very expertly mimics the vibe of seaweed underwater on the seafloor. I think any fragrance that manages to be unique in the abused aquatic category deserves praise. But I did not enjoy it as much this time due to change in tastes, not because the fragrance is bad. I actually got the vintage version since the fragrance seems to have been reformulated, fresher and less of that signature seaweed note. I also get seaweed note in Bond No. 9 Wall Street but I hate seaweed note in Bond No. 9 Wall Street but seaweed note is done really well in original Bvlgari Aqua. One way to tell the difference between original Bvlgari Aqua and reformulated Bvlgari Aqua is that the original bottles had both “Bvlgari” and “Aqva” written on front of bottle. In the reformulated version, they removed “Bvlgari” from front so you just see “Aqva” now.

The first time I wore it, I was expecting vanilla and was a little disappointed as it wears more as an incense blend on me with just a hint of vanilla. • SonomaVelvet, it’s hard to describe. It smells like almonds and cherry blossom. It’s worth getting a sample of. It’s the only Amouage fragrance I can wear. Being Amouage, it starts with this loud blast of fragrance and what smells like moth balls to me. I know that sounds horrible, and I thought so too at first. But that dissipates really quickly and quiets down into this pretty, soft floral gourmand fragrance. I wore it on a really difficult day when I first got it, and it helped provide comfort. Since then, I reach for it when I want something pretty, spring-like, and comforting. I’ve gone through a few samples and that’s all I can see myself buying anytime soon. At $360 a bottle, it’s out of my price range right now.
