Hi APJ,

I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.

SOTD 15 – 21 January 2018

The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:

  1. Gres Cabochard Parfum
  2. Guerlain Shalimar Cologne (NOT EdC)
  3. Armani Prive Cuir Amethyst
  4. Estes Lauder Modern Muse Le Rouge Gloss
  5. Oliver & Co Ambergreen

Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.

Last Weeks WINNER: VerbenaLuvvr

  1. Well I tried my sample of Ex Nihilo Fleur Narcotique today (thank you, again, Portia) and while it did not blow my mind (y’know narcotique and all that) it was pleasant. And it has lasted all day. It’s unexpectedly soft and gentle now.

    Like

    • My exact problem with it Jyotsna, but I keep coming back and the decant is nearly empty. That soft & gentle phase lasts forever.

  2. Today is Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose paired with Penhaligon’s Rhubarb & Rose lotion. Gives you almost a Tauerville Rose Flash vibe.

    • Tea rose was one of my mom’s signature scents. I have her old bottle which I never wear but like to sniff. Sounds like a good combo.

  3. I have a set of travel sprays from Maison de la Vanille from my early days of perfume. Today I have the divine des tropiques and givree des Antilles. The divine is white flowers with just a hint of vanilla – it’s not working for me either way. The Antilles is another poor mans Angel, cmarzipan- without the something in Angel that sends me scrubbing. So I can wear it but It’s not likely to steal my heart. I will probably try the other three later today.

    • The names of them are dreamy, though! Sound way better than Angel. But then, doesn’t everything sound better in French??! 😉

  5. I’m on a mission to finish up my “almost gone” samples and decants. Today I finished Jar Bolt of lightening. One of the few tuberose scents that I love.

    Like

      • I pulled out about 20 mixed samples and decants. I’ve used up 6 so far. Yes! Many are full bottle worthy! I had the samples and decants though because I can’t afford the full bottle of many of them (especially this Jar!)…. or they are sadly discontinued. 🙂

      • How annoying that is?! I have a habit of stockpiling samples, finally getting around to them, only to find they are incredibly expensive (and require overseas shipping, if they ship to Oz) or discontinued. So, I’ve put a ban on samples this year. I still have my Sena Unique subscription boxes from 12 mths ago to get through. You have inspired me, yet I’ve scared myself off too!!

Let us know which ones capture your attention!

      • Shiva-woman, do you order samples based off other’s recommendations, or simply ones you’d like to try? Do you ever order blind?

How many vials have you got to use up?

  6. My SOTD is Naomi Cuir Velours. I ordered her complete range from STC and am determined to work through them and not get side tracked by a lonely loved FB sitting on a shelf. I even ordered the Bakelite despite my feeling that I will not like it, but everyone raves so my nose must have a sniff.

    Like

    • Hmmm. I’m curious now, how you go with the Bakelite. We have similar tastes in scents at times, and Bakelite is one I’m keen to try. Simply because others have raved about it.

      • Hi Kate: I do very much order samples based off of certain blogger’s comments, four in particular. After years of reading various reviews and getting to know certain reviewers, I get a strong sense of whether I will like a perfume or not. It’s almost uncanny now that about 100% of the time I will like something that someone whose taste reflects mine recommended. However there are scents that I just want to smell as a reference point because other people are talking about them. Two examples come to mind: Warszawa Puredistance, and La Douceur de Siam Parfums Dusita. I have not tried the former, but have the latter. I think Siam is pretty, but for me, a pass. Both get raves, but I suspect they are too sheer and light on me, and just not my style and taste in fragrance. Nonetheless when other people speak about them I have (or will have with Warszawa) that scent memory that I can recall. I not only like to try scents that I know I’ll probably wind up loving and even perhaps purchasing a FB but just trying scent as an exploration and to find out what others are sensing and picking up. The whole perfume process I find utterly fascinating. Even a perfume that I don’t love, I still quite enjoy the project of deciphering the ingredients and considering the quality and the backstory of the perfume. Some perfumes/reviews just don’t call to me. If the word “aldehyde” appears, there’s a strong chance I’m not going to try, and even less buy, or, at least there will need to be a lot more going on, but there are exceptions (my vintage channel 5s are grinning at me now). Iris is a note I approach with caution, sometimes loving in leather-osthmanthus based perfumes, but less so in green perfumes. Finally there are houses I love: Serge Lutens, Dusita, Amouage, Aftel, Slumberhouse, MFK, Teo Cabanel, T Ford, Papillon, Tauer, Histoiries, IA, Green–and I think that’s true for a lot of us: some houses rarely disappoint. The aesthetic appeals to us.

  7. A bottle of slightly old Red Door found its way to me. I wore it 2 nights ago. I hugged my eldest, Nono. He loves all my weirder, abstract scents, but Red Door is one he requested I never wear again. Dede said the same. Strike that out.

Yesterday was a Teone day. Blossom was my homage to 24 Faubourg, but instead of 24’s refined honey, Blossom has full creamed honey effect. Scrumptious! After lunch I wore Spirit. One of the foremen mentioned how lovely it is and a co-worker said he smelled pot pourri. Whatever, dude! Then the gym in eau de diesel and Ambrosia. Gorgeous aura of floral beauty! It stayed with me til my final shower at 8pm. I wore Klein’s Beauty to bed. Nono approved of that!

Not sure what to wear today. Edging towards Knowing by Lauder, but maybe the undilute cordial like feel of Nahema or Chamade…? Meh. I’ll decide in 30 min.

I snagged a boxed set of four Dior 10ml EDT minis (oh, so cute, that little line of flat bottles!), maybe late sixties or earliest seventies from the styling. All of them full. They arrived today. I’ve only had a little open-and-sniff of three of them, with no wafts of acetone or other horrors…

He can’t ship the alcohol based ones, but he has added body creams to the range as well. God but I’m in trouble now.

I have a travel spray of Dark Horse which comes across quite sweet on my skin (my skin amps up sweet notes). Some of the soliflores are quite potent and true to their name (Gardenia and Narcissus…wow! powerful but gorgeous!). I don’t think you will be disappointed with the oils and I rather DO like the body creams as well. I have also used the hair oils as all over body moisturizers and perfume oils.

      • Ooohhh. Didn’t know there was a hand cream. I will have to look for that. I have been trying to find the Tibetan Mountain Temple Spray that I believe you mentioned in a post but haven’t been able to find it locally anywhere. And I would like to try the Mediterranean Fig since I guess I now have to find a replacement for Fig Tree from SSS. Haven’t had much luck finding that either.

        Like

      • Pacifica sells the Tibetan Mountain Temple online. My local health food store stopped carrying that one as it isn’t as popular as the other scents. Med Fig is lovely but I don’t believe quite the same as Fig Tree but do give it a try. It comes in solid and rollerball, both of which are quite inexpensive for blind buys.

  25. I’m spending more time with Olympic Orchids today. I have California Chocolate on one wrist and Seattle Chocolate on the other. They couldn’t be more different. They are both lovely. And they are both excellent representations of scents of place. Having lived in both Seattle and Southern California I can smell each one, and it reminds me of my time there. California Chocolate is bright and zingy with a prominent scent of orange from the orange groves there with florals just under the surface. The chocolate scent wore off fairly quickly to just a whiff in passing. Seattle Chocolate has underlying notes of fir and pine trees and remind me of walking through the forests there. Again the chocolate was just a whiff to start. While I believe these are both considered gourmand on the OO website, I think anyone could wear them whether you like gourmands or not. I’m definitely enjoying both of these and may consider a travel size of each down the road.

Le Sillage Blanc is spring blossom and the school’s-out-soon vibe. I get why some people have compared it to Piguet’s Bandit but I was underwhelmed by Bandit, LSB feels smoother and, well, simply more interesting.

  50. Well here we are at Sunday again!! Already? Doesn’t time fly. this morning I asked hubby to ‘play lucky dip’ with my latest Luckyscent samples.
    left wrist…the Coveted Countess Rose
right wrist…. Grand Neroli by Atelier
I think I need the Countess in a 10 ml spray decant
Will shower soon to get ‘public ready’ for work, and I’m going to wear a few good sprays of the uncompromisingly radiant vase of flowers called Il Bacio.
    Enjoy your Sunday, all.

    • I used to love Il Bacio! I didn’t know they still made it. I will have to look for it. I’m guessing it’s pretty cheap at this point.

  51. Have been wearing warming scents like five o’clock au gingembre, the Tauer Amber Flash body oil together with Ambre des Merveilles and so on all week. I don’t care much for all this snow we’re getting, but spring is still months away.

Tried the Twilly perfume yesterday while out shopping and it was yet again a new perfume I didn’t like much and it lasted less than 3 hours on skin. Will have to get hold of a sample and try in warmer weather, I think. For sure it is not a perfume for these frosty days.

  52. Unusually for me: same perfume two days in a row this week. Feve délicieuse on Thursday and Friday, which was just the softness I needed on these snowy, slushy, icy days.

I hate walking on this slippy slithery treacherous stuff–particularly on cobbles. I’ve got a lot of metalwork in my leg, and I’m terrified of falling. And the number of times my stick goes out from under me on the walk up to the station… ugh. So stressful. Hate that feeling of vulnerability. A cozy, soft, reassuringly lovely sort of scent is just the ticket.

Never thought I would love a gourmand scent so much.

  54. Received my samples from Solstice Scents yesterday and am so happy to have discovered them (although my pocketbook may not be). Of the four I bought, I have tried three. Snowmint Mallow is a wonderful peppermint vanilla scent that I could literally bathe in. Unfortunately it dries down in minutes to a skin scent that’s barely there. I’m wondering if a spray version might do better. I’ve also tried Smokewood Apiary which I really like and which is a smokey honeyed scent. And I’ve tried Chasing Shadows which is more woods and resins. I’m still on the fence about that one. I have one left to try tomorrow. I’m already seeing another purchase from them soon. And here I thought I was done with perfume purchases for awhile!
