Hi APJ,
I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.
SOTD 5 February – 11 February 2018
The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:
- Atelier Cologne Tobacco Nuit
- Frederic Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur
- Vintage Caron Nocturnes
- Detaile Bois Oud
- Cacharel Liberrté
Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.
Last Weeks WINNER: MMKinPA

I also wanted to say that there is so much time, effort and money put forth to host and hold these weekly draws and I thank you Portia for your extraordinary generosity and kindness. Know that I come to APJ not for the draws but for the lovely chats amongst you and the commenters…APJ is such a lovely place to be. With that being said, no need to enter me in this week’s draw 🙂

Oh yes. We spend a lot of time & money. You guys are all worth it.
The chatter that has erupted on APJ in the last year is amazing. I love reading what you’re all spritzing, doing, winning and losing. It’s like I get daily postcards from your lives. The longer we have APJ the more it astounds me, perfume peeps are generally the best.

Dear Portia, no better pleasure than wearing what you sold me a few months ago -Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Jasminora! So real and yet so subtle, not ‘in your face’ jasmine! I do wish it lasted longer though but it could be just me, perfumes just dissipate on my skin too quickly.

Thanks for the warning, Portia. I only look at sellers with 100% feedback, though that in itself doesn’t guarantee anything, I know. There’s a seller with small decants that I might try out, so there’s no great shelling out of cash. Wish me luck! Oh my nerves😬

Today I’m wearing a sizeable amount of Cape Heartache by IA. It doesn’t always get a lot of love with Bloggers, but I quite like it. To my nose it’s Amouage Bracken Woman meets Serge Lutens Fille en Anguilles but perhaps simpler than both, more easy to wear and less spendy. The smoke comes through more on me than in the SL and it’s less bracken/green than the Amouage.

Yesterday was Robert Piguet Calypso. Says reissue on the little label – new formula? Only drama it did not last at all. Not even 30mins so when I got to work I put Dame’s Desert Rose over the top and I smelt awesome till well after lunch.
Home for couple days so have Montale Louban on left, Berdoues Oud al Sahraa right side. Montale, strangely is very soft and steamy. I can just pick out the Oud and sandalwood. Sahraa I get more incense but it’s very soft on my arm. I feel it’s better at floating around me than on my skin. See how they go when I step out to run some errands in the hot.
Me too super happy to have found Portia and APJ. It’s a lovely place to visit, read, comment, meet cool people and find new perfumes to add to the growing decant wish list.

Isn’t insomnia just the bloody worst? I’ve gone from someone who slept like the dead to this zombie who wakes regularly at 3 a.m. and cannot get back to sleep until it’s almost up time. I’ve decided to test my newest samples this week. Today it was from the Italian perfume house Nobile 1942 – Vespri Esperidati W (for Woman) and Vespri Aromatico. Both feel like colognes to me, although they have a rather good longevity. Vespri Esperidati W is sunshine in a bottle. I’ve never felt so much citrus during the first 10 minutes…bergamot, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit..when they’re gone it turns slightly bitter (petitgrain?) and woody in the end. Vespri Aromatico is herbal (fennel, juniper) and slightly salty. Less citrus and soon it feels like chamomille tea with salt, aquatic. Interesting but I prefer the Esperidati.

I usually whinge about dabber samples, however today the sample I tried was a dabber. The scent was Roaring Radcliff…..Penhaligon’s answer to the oud explosion…5 years after the boat has sailed!!! My Goldfield & Banks samples arrived so today is Desert rosewood. It’s super pretty. Soft, classy and quiet but I’m getting wafts as I move around. Card says Buddha wood, mandarin, cardamom, benzoin, vanilla & patchouli. Want to spray the last half of my sample but will save it for a going out occasion.
Yesterday I also tried James Heeley Cardinal looking for the incense it got in lots of reviews – all I could find was full on ginger fizz!
Other highlight was Mancera Black intensive aoud. Both worthy of second spins.

The Desert Rosewood sounds lovely. I really enjoy the one decant I have- Wood Infusion. It is a line worth exploring.
Interesting about the Cardinal. I had a decant six years ago and loved it so much I finished it rather quickly. It did not seem very incense-y to me either….or rather a more lighter take on incense…..when I think of incense I think of frankincense and the essential oil can come off as light and lemony almost…I wonder if that is the “ginger fizz” your nose is picking up.

Today I’m test driving Clive Christian No 1 from the Original Collection. First I must say, it’s all very confusing with the four different collections, the numbers and letters…it was hard to decipher which samples I got in the first place.
And now the perfume – the first burst is good old Samsara from the eighties in all its beauty, creamy sandalwood! It stays creamy and woody all the way and I only get a bit of jasmine of all the listed flowers. It is wonderful, elegant, clean, it gets powdery and sweeter. I really love it…but be careful, I’m the woman who used to wear EL Private Collection and White Linen and VC&A’s First when I was 20 years old so I may be partial to such perfumes.

Contained within were empty bottles for me to add to my display…AND….. oh me oh my….a 5ml decant of 2003 Opium, as well as 2 vintage bottles with fume left inside .Both splash bottles…..Paris circa 1993ish and Oscar de la Renta, in a ‘squat flower/cloud’ shape.
THANK YOU SO MUCH , Indigo.
I’m simply sniffing these bottles, atm but no decision re my SOTD yet.

How exciting! Now you’ve got a nice occupation the whole day long. You reminded me that I have two mini bottles of Opium and Oscar de la Renta from the eighties. They are at my mother’s house. I think I’ll drive over today and have a sniff from the empty bottles. It’ll be worth it.
Enjoy your new babies.

Today again Clive Christian – Original Collection 1872 feminine (there’s obviously also a masculine). Lovely fresh herbal citrus that never gets sharp but feels cozy and warm. Probably because the flower bouquet (I can smell only the rose) which is well blended immediately joins the composition and softens it. A bit later the woody notes come in and then it becomes a beautiful skin scent for the rest of the day. It is not very original…but maybe it is THE original because the formula is the same since 1872, they say.

Hey Neva,
Maybe it is the original? I’m not sure how much perfume copy I believe anymore though.
Doesn’t matter if it smells fabulous.

Often when I’m in a rush and/or having trouble deciding what to wear, I reach for my bottle of vintage Lénthéric Tweed cologne. So that’s my SOTD. It was my mother’s favorite when I was very little, so it has nice memories associated.

I’m wearing Alien today. If I dab this very lightly, I can wear it. Unlike Angel which I can’t wear in any concentration without getting a terrible headache. I have a large sample of Alien. And while it’s pretty I don’t think I’d ever buy more just because I hate having to be so careful when wearing perfume.

Candice,
Do you ever perfume the backs of your legs/knees? Sometimes with the BIG frags a spritz all the way down there is far enough to cut the heft.

I haven’t ever tried that, Portia, but that’s an excellent idea! I will give that a shot and see if it helps ward off some of the headaches. You are a lifesaver 🙂

I’d like to report that Saffy is a VERY happy camper this morning!!!!!! I slept. In fact I slept for 6 glorious hours and I’m so grateful. Anyway yesterday I received a package of mostly empty bottles to add to my display, from Indigo. Two bottles still contained liquid…one is a vintage Oscar de la Renta in a squat/ cloud shape, the other is Paris in it’s original round bottle with the black lid. I have the bottle of Paris sitting on my kitchen table,{Approx.10 metres away from where I’m sitting}, and it is wafting glorious bright rose as it is ‘aired’. I will not be wearing it today..it is too precious to be worn to work. I’ve yet to choose my SOTD

Testing another two samples from Clive Christian. This time it’s the Noble Collection in black bottles. On my left wrist – Cosmos Flower…omg, a fruity floral which reminds me of all the Lady Millions, Petite Robe Noirs out there. It’s a genre I dislike although I know there are many fans of it. The sticky berry note (although it’s supposed to be plum) is killing me with its sweetness.
On my right wrist – Rock Rose…definitely a fougere. The lavender you can smell only shortly in the opening, otherwise it smells woody and resinous, very rounded. I wouldn’t mind my best friend wearing it when we’re together.
I’m a bit disappointed today. I’m gonna wash it all off and put on something that really pleases me.

keeping it simple and fun on this Friday morning with Demeter Ginger Cookie. So happy it is Friday!!!

How does it smell? Is it a sort of ginger nut type of fiery sweet ginger, or a lebkuchen type of ginger cookie, with more cinnamon-clove-nutmeg type of spices on top?
LikeLike
very heavy on the clove…and sweet…(which works for me!)…leibkuchen is a good comparison (and now you have me wanting one to eat-LOL!)….it reminds me a bit of Pacifica’s Tibetan Mountain Temple (which I adore!) but TMT has vetiver and patchouli so it is more earthy but also has that sweet gingerbreadiness in the background….the Demeter has lasted an extraordinarily long time…I put it on quite early (one spray) and could still smell it in the late afternoon. Most Demeters don’t last as long on my scent eating skin.

There’s Daim Blond and a couple other Lutenses, nine different vetivers, samples of colognes, a few L’Artisans… And today I got a present from dearest Portia! Perry Ellis Oud on left arm, Heeley Cardinal for the right. PE all spicy, manly, leather and cedar. But soft. I’m getting more of the sweet incense today from Cardinal. Got a cuppa in hand? I have a story to tell; may be longish post
You all know by now I work in a nursing home, where many people I care for are elderly with many forms of dementia. Other ‘residents’…{ yes I’m aware of the awful term } are razor sharp in mind, but their bodies have let them down. One such lady is Thelma. I’ve not had much contact with Thelma since Christmas, because she moved to another wing of the Home. Her partner moved in too… along with Thelma’s perfume collection!!
And woweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee… what a collection!!
There are 5 bottles. They seem to be have used lightly, with perhaps only 10 mls missing from each.
Curious to know the fumes? I bet you are!!!
Tweed by Lentheric…..a dinted old tin bottle
Versace Bright Crystal
Ma Griffe….. really old…..the box is falling apart, and this is the perfume which has been used most… possibly because it’s the oldest. Thelma told me she received it as a birthday gift from her parents ‘probably in the late fifties’
CKIN2U…..When I pick out this ,Thelma states matter of factly…I just bought it because of the bottle…. I don’t really like the smell {lol ..we’ve all been there}
Bal A Versailles…….Yes the glorious gorgeous Bal A Versailles…..Oh and in a beautifully presented tall bottle. OMG this is resplendent!! I had to have a spritz!!
Thelma saw my joy/ excitement, and gave her permission to spray.
I was so nervous I might drop the bottle ,so I sat on her bed and sprayed , some on her first, then the top of my left hand.
For the next 2 hours at work I was transfixed, as I went about attending to my duties, I kept smelling my hand.
So now I have moved Bal A Versaille up a few notches on my ‘ want ‘ list.
Sunday SOTD yet to be chosen.
