Hi APJ,

I see these SOTD (Scent Of The Day) threads all the time on Facebook and they are really good conversation generators.

SOTD 5 February – 11 February 2018

The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:

  1. Atelier Cologne Tobacco Nuit
  2. Frederic Malle Geranium Pour Monsieur
  3. Vintage Caron Nocturnes
  4. Detaile Bois Oud
  5. Cacharel Liberrté

Comment purposefully on yours or anothers comment & you’ll have a chance, random.org will draw on Sunday.

Last Weeks WINNER: MMKinPA

  1. After a day of sharp stomach pain, probably due to stress, I seek a comforting, tonifying scent for today.
Clarins Eau Dynamisante didn’t fail me!

  2. Bottega Venneta..trying it for the first time…nicely done but I think I would prefer this on a man.

I also wanted to say that there is so much time, effort and money put forth to host and hold these weekly draws and I thank you Portia for your extraordinary generosity and kindness. Know that I come to APJ not for the draws but for the lovely chats amongst you and the commenters…APJ is such a lovely place to be. With that being said, no need to enter me in this week’s draw 🙂

    • CM,
Oh yes. We spend a lot of time & money. You guys are all worth it.
The chatter that has erupted on APJ in the last year is amazing. I love reading what you’re all spritzing, doing, winning and losing. It’s like I get daily postcards from your lives. The longer we have APJ the more it astounds me, perfume peeps are generally the best.

  3. Dear Portia, no better pleasure than wearing what you sold me a few months ago -Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Jasminora! So real and yet so subtle, not ‘in your face’ jasmine! I do wish it lasted longer though but it could be just me, perfumes just dissipate on my skin too quickly.

    Like

    • Hi there Hage,
Yes, most of the Aqua Allegories are fleeting. Beautifully crafted and pretty but no staying power.
Jasminora needed a home where it got LOADS of love.
      Glad you’re enjoying it.

Atelier Silver Iris today. I don’t expect it to last so later today I will tackle some Hiram Green samples (won in a Facebook group draw… I have never been so luckily random in my life!)

  6. Portia, I have to add in my thanks as well. I can’t imagine the cost or time of always sending out winning perfumes, but I’m very grateful and it’s always fun to receive them when I win.

Today I’m wearing a sample of TF’s Tobacco Vanille. While I definitely prefer Vanille Fatale, this is a very nice scent as well and I will enjoy using up my sample.

  7. SSS Cocoa Sandalwood today. It’s very quiet and unassuming, the best way I can describe it is dusty. Wears close to the skin. Have spent a lot of time over the weekend searching out some vintage Opium following Saturday’s question. I don’t really know why I haven’t done this before now. I need this in my life again. Yeah, NEED, haha.

    • Hey Cassieflower,
For every 3 vintage Opiums I buy on eBay two are fakes. It seems to be an oft faked frag. My BFFs mum wears it exclusively and it’s getting harder & harder to keep her in it.

      • Thanks for the warning, Portia. I only look at sellers with 100% feedback, though that in itself doesn’t guarantee anything, I know. There’s a seller with small decants that I might try out, so there’s no great shelling out of cash. Wish me luck! Oh my nerves😬

  8. Mito VdE. It is only Mito’s distracting gorgeousness that is keeping me from being a complete headless chicken right now. I just had to jump off my train a moment before it left because it was not actually my train… Somehow I had a ticket for a month from now! And was about to be charged 250 to stay on. Eek! After a mad dash to the ticket office, I’m 70 quid poorer, and burning with misplaced shame at the fuck up.. but I’m on the later train and heading north, and I smell bloody amazing.

(And many, many thanks to the cookie queen for steering me right on my quest to try vero’s work after a previous and unfortunate passion fruit overdose which made me avoid these wonders. And see what I’ve been missing.)

  9. Eau du Sud, lavishly applied. It’s the only fragrance I had at my weekend place, and I love it so much I didn’t feel like waiting till I got back to town to put on something else. It’s very summery, but also works well in the bitter cold we are experiencing today.

  11. Today I’m wearing a sizeable amount of Cape Heartache by IA. It doesn’t always get a lot of love with Bloggers, but I quite like it. To my nose it’s Amouage Bracken Woman meets Serge Lutens Fille en Anguilles but perhaps simpler than both, more easy to wear and less spendy. The smoke comes through more on me than in the SL and it’s less bracken/green than the Amouage.

  14. Yesterday was Robert Piguet Calypso. Says reissue on the little label – new formula? Only drama it did not last at all. Not even 30mins so when I got to work I put Dame’s Desert Rose over the top and I smelt awesome till well after lunch.
Home for couple days so have Montale Louban on left, Berdoues Oud al Sahraa right side. Montale, strangely is very soft and steamy. I can just pick out the Oud and sandalwood. Sahraa I get more incense but it’s very soft on my arm. I feel it’s better at floating around me than on my skin. See how they go when I step out to run some errands in the hot.

Me too super happy to have found Portia and APJ. It’s a lovely place to visit, read, comment, meet cool people and find new perfumes to add to the growing decant wish list.

I really feel like hibernating, but plenty of fruit and some warm chocolate in the evening got me through most of my planned activities today.

So grateful for the friendly community here at APJ and happy to report that one of the Amouage samples I won not long ago found a new and better home! My friend loved the scent and I was happy to share something new with her

  16. Hello All. Yesterday I spent the day wearing Imogen by Evocative Perfumes brand. It stayed on my skin for approx. 4 hours. I wore Bluebell in the arvo, then Fancy Nights to bed. Insomnia took hold of me at 3amish,so I applied the last drops of a 2ml decant of Keiko Mercheri Johana

    • Isn’t insomnia just the bloody worst? I’ve gone from someone who slept like the dead to this zombie who wakes regularly at 3 a.m. and cannot get back to sleep until it’s almost up time. Luckily I don’t work every day as I work evenings and weekends so I manage to get enough kip to keep going. Sleep deprivation is a very efficient torture tool.

  17. Sleep deprivation is the worst kind of torture! And at 3 am everything seems dire and dismal and you magnify every single one of your worries.
Perhaps a small vial of something to dab when that happens…not sure what that might be but something not too challenging. Any suggestions?

  19. I’ve decided to test my newest samples this week. Today it was from the Italian perfume house Nobile 1942 – Vespri Esperidati W (for Woman) and Vespri Aromatico. Both feel like colognes to me, although they have a rather good longevity. Vespri Esperidati W is sunshine in a bottle. I’ve never felt so much citrus during the first 10 minutes…bergamot, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit..when they’re gone it turns slightly bitter (petitgrain?) and woody in the end. Vespri Aromatico is herbal (fennel, juniper) and slightly salty. Less citrus and soon it feels like chamomille tea with salt, aquatic. Interesting but I prefer the Esperidati.

  22. Feb 6: I’m seeing a play called Farinelli and the King tonight. It’s set in 18th-century Spain, so Seville à l’Aube would be a perfect choice–only orange blossom does not work on me, for me (though it’s lovely on others). So, fast forwarding to the 19th century, I’ve picked a spicy rose–what I call a “potpourri rose”–MPeG George Sand, which I believe has now been dc’d (sad face). I really love it. It’s beautifully warm and old-fashioned in the best possible way.

Well kids, you’ll be pleased to know I slept like a baby last night. However I woke up feeling quite melancholy, and then realized I as alone…. I had forgotten hubby has gone away for a few days. I have been playing the song ‘Hope there’s Someone’ by Mick Hucknall on repeat….at least 10 times. Now I’m playing the Simply Red CD, appropriately named BLUE, lol
I usually whinge about dabber samples, however today the sample I tried was a dabber. The scent was Roaring Radcliff…..Penhaligon’s answer to the oud explosion…5 years after the boat has sailed!!! It was a SCREECHIER version of Tobacco Vanille. I adore TF’s TV, so Radcliff will be roaring in my ..do not like’ sample collection. I have scrubbed it off, and plan to be scentless until I visit my local perfumery this morning.

Card says Buddha wood, mandarin, cardamom, benzoin, vanilla & patchouli. Want to spray the last half of my sample but will save it for a going out occasion.
Yesterday I also tried James Heeley Cardinal looking for the incense it got in lots of reviews – all I could find was full on ginger fizz!
Other highlight was Mancera Black intensive aoud. Both worthy of second spins.

    • The Desert Rosewood sounds lovely. I really enjoy the one decant I have- Wood Infusion. It is a line worth exploring.

Interesting about the Cardinal. I had a decant six years ago and loved it so much I finished it rather quickly. It did not seem very incense-y to me either….or rather a more lighter take on incense…..when I think of incense I think of frankincense and the essential oil can come off as light and lemony almost…I wonder if that is the “ginger fizz” your nose is picking up.

      Like

And now the perfume – the first burst is good old Samsara from the eighties in all its beauty, creamy sandalwood! It stays creamy and woody all the way and I only get a bit of jasmine of all the listed flowers. It is wonderful, elegant, clean, it gets powdery and sweeter. I really love it…but be careful, I’m the woman who used to wear EL Private Collection and White Linen and VC&A’s First when I was 20 years old so I may be partial to such perfumes.

Probably because the flower bouquet (I can smell only the rose) which is well blended immediately joins the composition and softens it. A bit later the woody notes come in and then it becomes a beautiful skin scent for the rest of the day. It is not very original…but maybe it is THE original because the formula is the same since 1872, they say.

On my left wrist – Cosmos Flower…omg, a fruity floral which reminds me of all the Lady Millions, Petite Robe Noirs out there. It’s a genre I dislike although I know there are many fans of it. The sticky berry note (although it’s supposed to be plum) is killing me with its sweetness.
On my right wrist – Rock Rose…definitely a fougere. The lavender you can smell only shortly in the opening, otherwise it smells woody and resinous, very rounded. I wouldn’t mind my best friend wearing it when we’re together.

I’ve got more on than last try. There’s something in it which makes me think fizz. It’s has some sweetness but then next sniff all serious pepper and patchouli. It’s very interesting.

  53. I wore amber perfume again for work, coming home this evening I put on a lot of Tauer Amber Flash scented body oil. I find it does wonders for my dry and itchy skin, I have forgotten to use body lotion for a few days, so will need to make an effort to rehydrate the skin. I’m fragrant, but will find some warm scent to add before bed, Casmir (spelling?) perhaps?

  55. The Saturday Question inspired me to wear Korres White Tea Bergamot Freesia. A pretty and light floral, not quite in tune with the weather! It’s snowing lightly but steadily since last evening. Unfortunately the snow is rather wet, at least down here in the city center. Will be wearing something warmer or spicy later in the evening.

  56. EL Jasmine White Moss this evening after a good trudge in the rain by the canal. Cassie decided that swimming season has arrived, despite very low temperatures 😬 But she had a nice warm shower when we got home and is now toasting in front of the fire. A total dog’s life round this house. An afternoon of rugby and Winter Olympics. I’m not setting foot outside again today.

  57. Got a cuppa in hand? I have a story to tell; may be longish post
You all know by now I work in a nursing home, where many people I care for are elderly with many forms of dementia. Other ‘residents’…{ yes I’m aware of the awful term } are razor sharp in mind, but their bodies have let them down. One such lady is Thelma. I’ve not had much contact with Thelma since Christmas, because she moved to another wing of the Home. Her partner moved in too… along with Thelma’s perfume collection!!
    And woweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee… what a collection!!
There are 5 bottles. They seem to be have used lightly, with perhaps only 10 mls missing from each.
Curious to know the fumes? I bet you are!!!
Tweed by Lentheric…..a dinted old tin bottle
    Versace Bright Crystal
Ma Griffe….. really old…..the box is falling apart, and this is the perfume which has been used most… possibly because it’s the oldest. Thelma told me she received it as a birthday gift from her parents ‘probably in the late fifties’
    CKIN2U…..When I pick out this ,Thelma states matter of factly…I just bought it because of the bottle…. I don’t really like the smell {lol ..we’ve all been there}
Bal A Versailles…….Yes the glorious gorgeous Bal A Versailles…..Oh and in a beautifully presented tall bottle. OMG this is resplendent!! I had to have a spritz!!
Thelma saw my joy/ excitement, and gave her permission to spray.
I was so nervous I might drop the bottle ,so I sat on her bed and sprayed , some on her first, then the top of my left hand.
For the next 2 hours at work I was transfixed, as I went about attending to my duties, I kept smelling my hand.
So now I have moved Bal A Versaille up a few notches on my ‘ want ‘ list.
Sunday SOTD yet to be chosen.

  58. Ralph Lauren Style today. A quiet white floral, but I find it more rosy, in the style of Kelly Caleche. It’s puffing away quite nicely here in the cold. Had a rain/hail/snow shower earlier and it’s sunny again now. The weather is totally bonkers this winter.

  59. Had to do some chores, so started the day spraying liberal amounts of L’Occitaine Grapefruit Rhubarb. Putting on something warmer now in the evening,Prada Candy, possibly my sweetest scent. I love the note of slightly burnt caramel.

Proud of myself for not making use of any of the Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day offers online to spoil myself.

Fresh buns which is a tradition even for those of us not observing Lent. A big vase of imported (Dutch?)tulips and watching a re-run of the earlier x-country ski race from the Olympics, a good Sunday!
