Saturday Question: Where Do You Spritz?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

Every Saturday we have a Question, an idea purloined from Olfactoria’s Travels. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it is a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:

  1. Vintage Diorella EdT
  2. Atelier Cafe Tuberosa
  3. Vintage Rochas Byzance EdT
  4. Baruti Dama Koupa
  5. Cartier Baiser Volé

Saturday Question: Where Do You Spritz?

Everyone seems to spritz slightly differently. I always find it interesting when the topic comes up. Different fragrances sometimes need different treatment too. So many spots that you can add perfume to.

My Answer:

So you are reading about a serial over spritzer here. I love the lavish glamour of spritzing like crazy. Well maybe not like crazy but I do like the feeling of being inside a fragrant cloud. Consequently I am often driving to a meeting/gig/event thinking, “SHIT! I am a scent bomb!”

The regular way I’ve come to spritz is two or three on each arm and my chest plus an extra on the back of my neck.

Perfume/extrait gets one on each arm and two on the chest if it’s a spritz

There are a few fragrances in my collection that do need a lighter touch or some distance. These get a belly spritz and a lower back spritz, if I’m feeling a little adventurous my knee backs will get a burst too.

My Saturday Question to you is:

Where Do You Spritz?

  1. Morning, just before I put my clothes on. If I’m going out after work, I’ll take a decant (though I’ve been known to lug something heavier) to spritz before my play, opera, or whatever.

Often, bedtime’s when I’ll reach for one of the skankmonsters—La Nuit, Musc Tonkin, or The Party in Manhattan

  2. I first spritz each wrist, then the neck (pulse points) and
    décolleté.
I never forget a couple inside my hair – it makes a real difference.
I also have an extra spritz or two after I have my clothes on, perfume on fabric lingers on beautifully.

  3. Arms, then back of neck/hair (my hair is short, so I don’t get any “swing” factor from it, sadly. . Décolleté. I tend to avoid the super powerhouses during the day but may try the lower back method so I can wear some of those more often. I’m an undersprayer except for a few very ethereal perfumes – Apres l’Ondee I’m looking at you!

  4. I love spritzing as well and I’m probably an over spritzer. .I laughed at your “scent bomb” comment. How often I have thought that! I tend to spritz more lavishly while at home and I have to be careful on work days. I always spritz both wrists so I can sniff easily, especially while sampling. The back of my neck, chest, hair, and clothes also get spritzes. I always spritz my scarves in winter, specifically before riding the light rail train to work so I can bury my nose in my scarf.

      • Yes I completely get you! I love living in the fragrant cloud as well, a wonderful place to be! I don’t wash my scarves after each wear, I spray over previous scents. My scarves end up smelling amazing and as a result, my closet where they hang also smells nice. Does anyone else also spray their clothes hanging in the closet? I do this as an “air freshener” with lesser worn and inexpensive fragrances, but also sometimes to test a scent, not on my skin. I’ll walk back into the closet a few minutes later to see how the scent evolves. One time while visiting a Chanel boutique in Dallas, the sales associate stated she sprayed the pillows in her sitting room with Coromandel. My friend and I looked at each wide-eyed! We still laugh about her “expensive” air freshener!

  5. Chronic undersprayer here…paranoid about skanking out other people!
Husband sometimes winds down the car window but is too nice to say if I have overdone it!
I think it is a waste to spray my wrists as it seems to disappear so fast, but elbows and chest are good. Always back of neck and hair before bed so it lasts on my pillow thru the night. Trayee as I write!

  6. It’s usually two spritzes on my left arm: wrist and inner elbow, then smeared against right arm, plus one each for cleavage and base of my throat. I have no idea why I don’t simply switch hands and spray each arm…

Lighter or shorter-lived fragrances tend to get a couple of wide angle extra sprays onto a scarf so I can bury my nose in it for pleasant distractions as well as general upwards rising of scent for a more drawn-out time, or just extra on the arms and chest.

Very rarely my hair, because it’s super-long and doesn’t get a daily wash.

      • Bizarrely, having gone from a decade of a sharp bob to nearly a decade of waist-length or more hair, I’ve found long hair less work than short hair. Short needed washing and styling every day, cutting all the damn time to keep the precise shape, etc, etc. Now, one trim a year. Result! Though, for the past year and some it’s been bleached and coloured through a whole range of unnatural wonders, so I probably spend on conditioner what I would have spent on cuts before…

  7. Depends on what I’m spritzing and how hot/humid/sticky it is. If it’s a stayer like Clinique Aromatics, which I love, I’ll just do the one spritz on the pulse points. If it’s a lighter one, I’ll do pulse points (wrists, elbows, neck) + between the girls, plus back of my neck, ankles and a light spritz on my upper arms – I find in warmer weather it seems to make the ones with lesser staying power bloom a bit better. We’re just coming out of a horrible heatwave – sticky and humid and gross, and I found that spritzing like that makes it last longer.

  8. I typically spritz 8 or more locations including wrists, arm, neck, sides and back of neck always. If it’s a huge scent bomb then I only do 2x lightly on wrists. Superstitious I only spirits from a distance on wrists. I have tons of fragrance to sprtitzing heavily is needed.

  9. I have been know to spray liberally from head to knees. Unless I am using one of those sample vials…in which case it usually ends up in my palm smeared from head to knees. 🙂

  11. With scent eating skin I am a massive over spritzer. Depending on what I am wearing and where I am going I can do upwards of 10 or MORE sprays on various parts of my body…tops of feet, ankles, behind knees, below and above belly button, crook of elbows, inner outer wrists, chest, behind both ears, on my hands to disinfect when I cannot wash them, and in my fingers to run through my hair……I have also done the spray in front of you and walk through the mist technique….interestingly enough I have never done the back of the neck which several of you mentioned.

    • Your mention of spritzing hands to clean them reminds me that years ago I sometimes saw 4711 splashed on and then wiped with a tissue or handkerchief to clean hands when water wasn’t available. That was before gel hand sanitizer became commonplace.

      Like

      • Yes! My mother always carried a travel size of 4711 in her purse. When one thinks about it perfume is after all alcohol so I assume it would have disinfectant properties of some sort…if not at least my hands are smelling good!

  12. Over the last several years I became a chronic “undersprayer” because of my office situation: I have a manager who suffers from migraines that get aggravated by any smells. Being polite, he doesn’t always complain about my perfumes but on several occasions he expressed his discomfort from several of my perfumes – so now not only I do not wear those to the office but with the rest I’m very careful applying just 2-3 spritzes (behind the ears and one wrist or inside my clothes. Because of that I noticed that I put on less perfume even when I do not have that office limitation – out of habit 🙂

  13. Strong frags, it’s usually just one to the left wrist and chest/neck. Medium frags, I add one to the back of the hand. Weak light frags, I will coat up my arms and backs of knees plus down the chest and stomach. If feeling sexy or going out, I will do the stronger ones one on the pubic mound and one to the lower back.

  14. I’m pretty similar to Portia in where and how many sprays. I do spray a lot – I like to be able to smell my own perfumes. However, I’m aware of olfactory fatigue, so sometimes if I’m wanting to test something out, it’ll just go on the back of the hand. Otherwise, I generally will disperse around 5-8 sprays on my arms, chest, and lately, back of my neck. If it’s a sample atomiser, it might be a few more sprays since they dispense less liquid.

I try to make sure at least a bit gets on my shirt, particularly with Colognes or EDTs.

  15. It all depends. If I am at work, wrist, chest and back of neck get one each, more if it is a weakling. I find work smells kill my scent very quickly, and my overalls rub oil and grease into my skin. Ugh.

At home, I do whatever I want. Teone has taught me that her scents are best used as a splash. It has made a huge difference. The halo effect.

But always wrist, neck and torso. Only exception is Giorgio Beverley Hills. It is a walk through.

  16. I’m actually an undersprayer: a couple spritzes on my neck and sometimes on both wrists, but when I feel dashing there it goes: chest, belly, hair and in summer or when the perfume is too hard to handle I put it somewhere around the knee area. My gosh! Now you know what no one knows, lol!

  17. Back of my neck and hair, sometimes 1 single spritz on my chest. If it’s a splash or dab bottle, then I dab it just around the back and sides of the neck. I don’t spray it on my arms or wrists because I find it interferes with the moisturizer.

  18. Due to an Office Perfume Grump I spray quite lightly during the week, on my inner arms and sometimes on my tum. On the weekend it’s often the back of my hands when I am doing a sniff-off. Right now it’s Civet vs. Femme. I forget I don’t like Femme’s top notes that much, so I’ll see how they due during the dry-down.

  19. I think I am a very conservative sprayer that usually goes for 3-5 sprays at best though 3 most often. I spray one on the back of neck and 2 on chest and 2 on abdomen (when I exceed 3 sprays). Of course, there may be few occasions when I break the 3-5 rule when the scent has a very very low sillage and longevity but such moments are very rare.

  20. Ok I spray heavily; 13 places.. occ 14!!
Each wrist, crook of elbow and middle of arms, front and back.
Back of neck, front of neck, behind each ear
And if I really particularly want to be able to get an extra sniff, I apply ,via dab method under nostrils and a squirt to the cleavage.

  21. Most days, I’m at work and spray mostly my clothing and perhaps an arm, up near the shoulder. I wear scrubs and end up smelling of veterinary stuff, most of which is pretty awful, so I tend to spray my pants legs quite liberally in a preemptive strike against dog drool. I’ve discovered that spraying my knees and thighs, I can enjoy my perfume when I’m squatting down. The extra spray on my sleeve affords me a nice smell to press my face into if something truly nauseating occurs.
Out of habit, I tend to follow the same pattern on my days off. It works, though. I like getting wafts of scent, and spraying lower on my body enables me to enjoy perfume but not be trapped in a cloud if a migraine strikes without warning.

      • That’s a fact. You would be appalled at how frequently my shoes get piddled on. Still, large dog drool is worse than you would think when you get enough soaked into your clothes on a warm day. On the bright side, if I wear something too animalic for the coworkers I can always blame a patient.

      • MikasMinion, very nice to ‘meet’ you. Lovely to have another smelly employment person here. I am thinking of our old male cat and how stinky he can be. Dog drool would be a difficult one when it dries up. Thank you for discussing all this. I’ve certainly learned something! K xx

    • Love your perfume-at-work strategies!

I’ve never really enjoyed perfume on my neck, chest, and hair for the same reason. It seems too close and can feel suffocating if a headache is coming on.

  22. Great question Portia 🤔 I’m a big sprizter! Was gonna say sprayer, but spritzer sounds nicer! 😉 Arms, wrists, chest, neck – get dressed, then repeat before I head out the door. Of late I’m feeling that my skin is eating up my scents so I spray lots. I love having a little perfume cloud follow me around.

      • I can. Scent disappears after menopause—I’ve always had dry skin, but I’ve noticed it’s super dry now, and some more recent scents just disappear. Also, some niche brands are fab—just lasting hours, while others, disappear. The entire line of Neela Vermeire does not last more than five minutes (you can imagine the tears on that one). I’ve tried and tried and tried…but Hiram Green, lasts a day. I oil up and moisturize, layering scents that are complementary and then I get good mileage.
But, I do think that as we get older we “smell” differently with our noses—things smell different to us, and we are attracted to different scents. It’s not just “maturity”—I think young noses are much more sensitive and “looking” (perhaps unconsciously) for a different scent.
This might explain why people think “older women” (I’m only 50!) douse on fragrance too much; I don’t think I’m there yet, and no one says peeps to me, but perhaps this is why we might “bathe” in Poison, Cinnabar, and Opium. It might kill a younger person. To us, ahh.
I’m wearing Solstice Scents Winter Dover right now, and I just want to keep on applying it and sniffing!

      • Well thats a bummer! Damm menopause. I was initially thinking maybe diet or medication was making my perfume disappear. Moisturising/oiling all of me is now part of the daily regime. Damm you menopause!
I agree Shiva-woman that our noses change, or mature – selfishly i think we become a bit smarter about our choices, so what we liked 20 years ago we might not like today. Plus our situations change, like where we live etc. I also wonder if wearing ‘more’ perfume is because we are more confident in ourselves and our choices. And being selfish again, because i can and deserve to xx

  23. I definitely fall on the underspraying side if the spectrum. Usually 2 sprays, one each to belly and chest and i dab my wrists on one or both. If it’s a light frag I might do two sprays to one or both and if it’s something very strong I may skip the chest altogether.

If it’s a solid or a dabber I’ll usually apply to the same points although I generally apply to the wrists directly in that case.

My skin holds scent pretty well so I never worry about topping up during the day. If anything I’m more likely to need to scrub the remnants when I get home and apply unscented lotion before selecting something different as a change of pace.

Back of neck always. Front neck mostly. Wrists sometimes. ❤️

    • I generally prefer not to have perfume on my clothes too. It seems stale the next day and until the item is laundered. But I don’t mind traces of perfumes on my bathrobe and night clothes, that seems ok to me.

  25. I totally misread the question; no glasses, just got up. Ok, so *where* do I spritz. Cleavage, carotid, jugular. Like a previous poster, double spray on right wrist, dab on opposite wrist and inner elbow. Go back for right elbow. Since I always wear my hair up, sometimes I spray the nape of my neck. And if I’ve chosen something particularly fab, one spray to the undies.

  26. I have dry skin that eats most perfumes so I spritz 10-12 times: arms, wrists, décolleté, back of neck, abdomen. I want to be sitting in a cloud of perfume at home. Going out I tone it down unless it’s a really light scent.

  27. It depends on the fragrance and how much oomph it has. For medium sillage frags it’s two sprays to side of the neck and one to the belly and lower back one in the crook of the arms and one between the girls. For the powerhouses it’s one spray on back of the neck and crook of the arms. Always before I get dressed. Colognes I just go mad and spray all over.

  28. …reading about all this exuberant spritzing is making me feel like I’m terribly parsimonious. I always assumed I was on the heavier-handed end of the spritzing spectrum. Though that’s probably because I work with people who will give one tiny spray and spread that with dainty dabs to the opposite wrist *and* each side of their neck.

  29. Wrists and forearms are my favorite spots for fragrance every day, sometimes ankles when they are bare, sometimes torso before dressing.

Years ago when I daily wore skirts and dresses to work, I often spritzed my under-slip with perfume so that it would waft when I walked. Nobody could really tell it was me wearing perfume. 😀

Love this question, it’s great to go beyond what scents we choose and think about how we apply fragrance.

  30. I am rather conventional, one spritz on each wrist and one on the neck usually. If it is a fleeting eau fraiche, then a bit all over the upper body, like on the tummy, or by the elbows. Also, I would rather have had a dab bottle for certain eau de parfums, but I know I’m in the minority.

  31. I must be heavy on the trigger. Any real estate that is open I spritz—body, torso, neck, cleavage, arms, behind the knees and sometimes, as someone else put it, the “boiler room” too. But I don’t stop there! When I’m dressed, I spritz scarves, clothes, and if there are undergarments, those get a spritz too. Hair is a must. My hair is longish, so I do an all over on top and then the bottom. But…This is with most perfumes.
Some scents are so “Uber strong” that I “try” to be more restrained. My recent aquisitions of Oud Picante and Russian Oud, and some older 80’s style perfumes really require less—less is fine in this case.
I also don’t leave the house and go to work and wherever like this. It’s usually an hour or two before I leave home, so it settles on my skin. If it’s a quick jaunt out, then I spritz something lighter, more edc so I don’t fumigate people. But I probably am anyways. In my life, more is more—better!

  32. This is all very inspiring to a shy spritzer! I got scent-shamed in class once and it’s stuck with me (and er, it was Bal a Versailles meeting a pregnant woman, which must have been pretty awful for her too). But y’all are making me want to go big again, at least in non-work/school situations.
The problem at this time of the year (winter) is that I’m wearing so many bloody clothes, I’m not sure scenting my body would be any good when it has three jumpers over the top of it! So I am loving the suggestions of the sides of the neck, and the backs of the hands.

  33. Man, I realised I very much underspray. Bit I can wear heavy scents- the naturally oily Indian skin helps, perhaps? And I don’t have a huge range either- I’m still doing bac- of-the-napkin calculations for the older Saturday question- how many perfumes…😄
All this self-deprivation. And to what end?
So, today, I am Cherguied to the gills. Must say, I love it!
