Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 12 – 18 March 2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

  2. Good morning APJ’s, today I am wearing Coriandre by Jean Coutorier. I always forget about it because the sprayer was stuck on the vintage bottle I bought so I managed to get the perfume into one of those cobalt blue sprayer bottles. A generic looking bottle with a sticker label never catches my eye in the morning! I had planned to consider wearing it ahead of time otherwise I would have overlooked it again.

      • Wow! Wendy, it always amazes me how people identify notes and really know what they are smelling. If someone asked me if I liked rose and patchouli I’d say absolutely! But I am not realizing that’s what’s going on with me and Coriandre. No wonder it triggers my hoarding instinct. I always want to buy a backup bottle…I have it in my perfume cabinet in the spring/summer half on the chypre shelf. I read it as French and woodsy complicated and “just right skanky.” I’m totally not able to say things like here come the Iris notes. I may get there someday.

    • I like that one…such a shame they discontinued it. There was another one from Le Couvent that I adored that was very citrusy…..my best friend sent me a one ounce bottle of it and I used it up rather quickly..it has also been discontinued….

      • Portia, I sold my MIP to a friend. There are some things I just can’t wear. It smelled like a jungle flower using death smells to attract prey on my skin. I still miss that fantastic bottle though. I sold my Lolita Lempika to the same friend. Now whenever something is too “oriental’ for me, I run it past her.

Wearing Incense Suede by Salvatore Ferragamo, bought in a quest to find a tarry/carbolic acid smelling fragrance (it hit me later than Le Labo’s Patchouli 24 is in fact THE most carbolic smelling fume out there.. to me at least). The smell of carbolic acid always brings me back to my horse riding days.. If only there was a fragrance combining the smells of leather (from the horse tack), horse feed, hay and straw, horses, dung and carbolic acid (used to weatherproof the fences) I could stop buying perfume (yeah right). I also still want to find the perfect indian ink smell-alike – hoping to have found it in Lampblack.. Bought but not yet smelled: had it delivered to a UK address from Roullier White and am going to pick it up this weekend… fingers crossed! cheers, Wendy

      • Ah?! no i have not.. but sounds absolutely intriguing, thanks for the tip! One commenter on fragrantica states “Arabian Horse by Parfumerie Generale” so yes, it seems to tick a lot of the boxes hahaha! plus, I love Arabian horses… they are so graceful…sigh…

  5. For the near to last summer blast I am back to Eau de Givenchy, my comfort scent: woodsy, green citrusy floral (Fragrantica) that I reserve for temperatures above 25c.

    Later I will do a walk through the mist of Marbert Man because it is very cold today and this vintage aromatic fougere wears beautifully in the winter.

  7. Wearing Essence No. 3 Ambre from Elie Saab thanks to a decant sent by a friend. Slightly spicy, rather than sweet, it is a nice bracing scent for the 1st post time change workday

  10. Goodbye Picadilly, from 4160 Tuesdays. Knew I wanted violets today, but dithered for ages between this and Kerbside Violet. Decided to go for the leathery version, and have been in lovely warm clouds of parma violets, facepowder, and soft leather all day. A nice wrap up of a Suffragette special after last week’s IWD choices.

  11. Today it is Dandelion Fig by Shay & Blue. It received a thumbs down from my fellow travelers in the car to work this morning, but I like it as a change of pace from what I normally wear and am feeling it today.

  17. I recently found a bottle of Shalimar parfum from the 80s. I’m giving it its first wearing today. Happily it is intact and has not turned! I forgot how strong the opening is but how lovely the dry down on this one is.

  19. I wore Eris Belle De Jour. It is so different from what you would expect from the name that is inspired by classic french movie. No classic feel at all but kinda futuristic/metallic. It is not something I love but it does keep you engaged with that futuristic vibe.

      • Not at all, could not be more different. Now that I looked at the notes, I think it is the very prominent seaweed note that gives it that metallic vibe… the seaweed note is noticeable but it is not deep like vintage bvlgari aqva but rather thin like the style we witness in many eldo creations created by Antoine Lei who created Belle de Jour also. Despite the name, Belle de Jour does not feel classic even in the least bit. It’s metallic vibe is futuristic to me, maybe the kind you would expect in many comme des garcons perfumes as well.

  20. Goldfield & Banks Pacific Rock Moss for me today. Changing it up a little from my usual spicy ouds. This one lemon, sage, geranium and cedar wood. Super fresh yet pretty.

  22. Yesterday morning I wore Mystre, last night to sleep I wore Prada La Femme L’eau. I just heard a news report that Hubert Givenchy has died. So I thought I ought wear a Givenchy scent….and to my dismay, I don’t own ANY… not even any samples !!!!
    I’m wearing the sample of Sables which I received from Portia last week…will be fab in this mild day.

      Givenchy was one of my favourite houses when I was younger (and knew nothing of perfumery), – all sorts of Irresistibles were my jam, and now I only have a bottle of Givenchy III, and a decant of Irresistible for men (still like it) and a minibottle of Organza that scares me with its sweet tuberose.

      • I am a big Organza fan, it would take a lot more tuberose than that to scare me😏. I just remembered today that I also have Hot Couture so I might give it an outing tomorrow in honour of Monsieur Givenchy.

  26. Just a few years ago when I was starting to get serious about perfume I bought a “lot” of used Creed bottles because I was wowed by all the hype. Today I am wearing one of them. It’s called 2000 Fleurs. We will see if it stands up to a day of middle school teaching…

I just go my House of Matriarch “She” which is a “lemon” scent using lemon verbena, lemon balm, and lemon grass–so it’s really not truly citrus save for the Bergamot; other notes are quite warm and woodsy including Aoud and beeswax. It is absolutely fantastic–one of the best from this house, which can be quirky. This is NOT Aqua Allegoria or DG Light Blue–it is herbal, sweetly green with a “lemon aspect”–a grassy-sweet woods lemon. Just love.

    • Despite my interest I have held off on sampling from HoM because the full bottles are so pricey and way beyond my budget…but I can live vicariously through you 🙂 Looking forward to your mini reviews on any other HoM you may try in the future.

  32. Amber Absolutely by Fort & Manle – so so good. Trying to stretch out my sample so i can smell awesome all day. WIsh i had more so i could spritz madly. Think it beats Harlem Rose?

  33. As promised, vintage Givenchy Gentleman today. I can’t really feel said at Givenchy’s passing given his advanced age – we all have to depart some time. But it is appropriate to honour his achievements, and this fragrance is certainly one of them.

  34. I sprayed a sample of Mary Greenwell Plum….not really nice in the beginning.. mellowed after a couple of hours into a ‘pretty’ and ‘safe’ scent. Sorry Cassieflower, not my cup of tea.
    As I write this, news has just broken that Stephen Hawking has passed away. So ,being in need of another fragrance to wear this evening, I’m going to apply a few hefty squirts of Sun Moon and Stars.

  37. This almost never happens to me, but when it does I am prepared–I left the house without having spritzed this morning! In a big hurry to get my kids to school and make it to work for a meeting, I realized the omission as soon as I plopped in my desk chair. Fortunately, I have emergency backup rollerballs in my desk and purse. The sun is peeping through the clouds and it could get above freezing here today, so I went with Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange to further brighten my day. Have a great day everyone! 🙂

      • Saffyishere – i’ve tried to track down Pacifica in Oz and didnt have much luck.
        Contacted them direct and they suggested iherb or aussie well – some online sites. I did find Pacifica on STC – picked Tibetan Mountain Temple (thanks Chez Marzipan) MOR do a blood orange scent next time you at DJ’s xo

      • Pacifica has come out with a whole new line of perfumes geared towards the younger market so my gut tells me many of the older ones might be on the chopping block. Over the years so many of the good ones have been discontinued and they recently sold off the last of their stock of candles (which were so phenomenal and highly affordable) and no longer sell them on their site. Maybe best not to seek out samples because if you try and love obtaining a full bottle might be a challenge in the future..

        Melanie- I will be curious as to how you get on with Tibetan Mountain Temple…it reads like delicious gingerbread on my skin.

  39. Today I’m wearing Acqua di Biella No 1. This is a good choice for somebody looking for a change from the inescapable AdP and Hermes colognes. I like the initial mintiness in this, and it has a jasmine note that is subtle rather than overwhelmingly tropical. It’s not the best cologne that I own, but it gets a regular run because it is a bit different. As we move into autumn, this might be its last run for a while though.

  41. Mitzah yesterday and Ambre Precieux today. It’s freezing, so ambers are still just what I need. My house on the other hand is a jumble of the various essential oils, coffee grounds and odor sponges I’m using to try to get rid of dead rodent smell from the crawl space below my kitchen. (said rodent is gone now but the smell is lingering….) any hints welcome!!

    • When a rat expired under my washing machine (took us a few days to figure out where the smell was coming from…we thought it was under the floor at first or the drain) after I’d cleaned everything as best I could I bruised (slightly crushed) a whole container of cloves and then spread those out under the wahing machine and left them there. You ciuld try an open container of baking soda too (bicarbonate of soda) as that is also good for absorbing smells.

    • Onion Slices: Like coffee grounds, onion slices are effective absorbents. Get a large onion and slice it up into medium sized cuts. Then, place them in a bowl or on disposable plates. Place the slices in different parts of the house—especially near where the odor is strongest. Let them sit overnight. After a few hours, the dead rodent smell should be totally absorbed. Some people follow onion slices with bowls of vinegar to really remove the smell completely. Of course, after using these methods, air freshener and cracking a window or two will most likely be needed.

      I found this and thought at least it won’t cost you an arm and a leg even if it doesn’t work 100 percent.

  43. LOL…I think I finally ‘get’ what truly serious sillage is all about. Put on one, admittedly generous, spray of L’Heure Bleue EdP tonight after I changed out of my work clothes and had removed the leftovers of Bois des Iles from this morning. Wandered into the kitchen to make the salad for dinner, then wandered out again to another room while hubby cooked the BBQ.

    He came into the kitchen (I wasn’t there) and said loudly ‘oooh…that’s a good one! ‘. This from the man who on being asked to smell anything other than Chanel No 5 can be relied on to say ‘is it musk?’ or occasionally ‘what’s that smell?’ (It was the gorgeous santal majescule).

    Cracks me up that:
    1. He could still smell my perfume when I’d left the room and
    2. Only chanel no 5 and l’heure bleue meet his definition of good perfume (‘that’s a good one’ is praise of the highest order lol)

  45. Ostara today. A little heavy handed, perhaps, in its earliest hour, but I smell gooooood. Though the man on the bus who sat down next to me sniffed, rubbed his nose for about a minute, gave me dirty looks, and then moved away in horror. Which is fine–one reason I wear perfume unapologetically in the mornings is to protect myself from the scents of long-term-unwashed and old beer stinks from some of the other passengers. Like him.

    Yesterday, at home, in a huge cloud of Mitzah without offending anyone.

  46. We had a “restructuring” at work yesterday, and while I am happy and lucky still to have a job, I am definitely not happy with the way things have worked out for me. So today I wore a LOT of Papillon Salome today. Olfactory armor. What a great fragrance. It’s old-fashioned in the best sort of way. I can see some of those belle-epoque women in Lartigue’s photos wearing something like this.

Re your comment above on Italie Paestum Rose – if you had said ‘Mel, you’re going fall for some scents with rose in them this year’ I would have said ‘don’t be mad!’ But here I am wearing and loving Rose in some of my perfume. L’art Voleur de Roses got me started. Would like to try some others from the Eau d’Italie line xo

      • Can I jump in here and recommend a lovely rose that’s very very affordable if you can get it. Paul Smith Rose was my gateway rose, I always said I didn’t like rose fragrances before I tried this one. It’s probably ten years since this came out but it’s worth a sniff and won’t break the bank, and you can spray with abandon, wohoo.

        I’ll add some more
        -Neela Vermiere Mohur (so very Indian!);
        -Luten’s Sa Majeste La Rose (stunning and deep. I am a Lutens fan)
        -Ormond Jayne Ta’if (gosh I would so love to smell a taif rose);
        -Amouage Lyric Woman (I fall in love with myself when I wear it).
        -Lush used to have Imogen Rose but I haven’t been able to find it in the Canberra shop lately.
        -Lastly Guerlain Nahema (very elegant. I have a near empty decant and only ever wear it to weddings. Usually I forget because I reach for my fleurs d’oranger instead!)

        +1 for Rouge de Hermes and SL La Fille de Berlin (mmm RAWR)

        Roses are such personal scent- not sure how you like yours. I havev the typical dark, oily Indian skin so I can wear fairly heavy scents. Plus it’s cold a lot of the time in Canberra and I can get away with brazen choices.

        I’ve heard good things about les parfums de rosines who make a million rose scents.

        Tauer roses are at the top of my rose wish list. 😁

  48. Feels like autumn is finally here. The street trees are on the turn and it’s cool and there’s the promise of rain in the air. Sycomore EdP was calling to me again and I definitely need a bottle. I reach for this at least once a month and sometimes more and my samples are almost gone. Going to stop in the city tonight on the way home and do some sniffing, probably Black Saffron and Tempo if our Mecca has them, and then drop into DJ’s for some Sycomore EdP.

Did you know they are opening a Mecca Maxima at Burside soon – might be some more scents to sniff in there as i find Mecca sometimes a bit limited. Happy Friday xo

      • The EdTs had already been phased out by the time I became a serious perfume addict. Yes I bought my 75mls of Sycomore and admired the lovely Lubin Kismet but walked very firmly away from it…for now LOL.

        Mecca had both Tempo and Black Saffron and I went there pretty much straight from work and checked them on strips and then put a spray each arm befire wandering around to do the rest of my errands.

        I enjoyed both of them and can actually still smell their dry downs this morning. Black Saffron really is a glorious shapeshifter. There was something in the open that bothered me bug the rest was gorgeous shades of light and dark as the fruit and leather took centre stage. At one point it Reminded me really strongly of YSL’s Noble Leather but later it was much softer.

        Tempo was lovely too. Kind of like a rougher-around-the-edges Coromandel.

        Enjoyed the rides but they didn’t shift Kismet or Charlatan down my WANT list. If I didn’t already have Noble Leather and Coromandel EdP though it might have been a different story…

  51. I’m enjoying all of my PG Intrigant Pachouli today – thanks Portia for your review. This is lovely. Musky, amber and patchouli – not scratchy like some patchoulis but warm and mellow. Has wafted around until nearly lunchtime and is definitely worthy of re-ordering another little decant.

  52. Last night I wore Carnal Flower to bed… just felt like being a little extravagant. This morning some remnants on me ,and my pillow.
    Now after washing the loo and shower I smell of ammonia….yucko.
    After my shower, using a lemon myrtle soap I’ve sprayed a few liberal doses of Charlie Oriental.
    By the time I get to work ,it will have mellowed..only a little though.

  58. Summer has returned. Is going to get to approx. 30C today, and the ‘experts’ have warned of a high fire risk day.
    It is also St. Paddy’s day, so to work I’m wearing a bright green hair scrunchie, green eyeshadow, and green shirt. In Ballarat tonight we are also holding White Night, where our gorgeous buildings are lit up with artistic illuminations.
    SOTD has to be green green green…..so what better than my sample of Miller et Betraux by the same name…Green Green Green. And I’m taking my bottle of Wrappings to apply later in my shift.

    • stay cool….wish you could send some of that heat my way…while we should be experiencing spring like weather we are instead getting more snow on Tuesday and the morning temps will range from 10-12 degrees Fahrenheit this week. This cold weather is putting a damper on my spirits.

      Happy St Patrick’s Day to you…I will be making my usual corned beef and cabbage feast. I was going to skip it this year but the youngest Marzipan requested it so I guess I will be cooking 🙂

      Did you get to the Illuminations? Sounds lovely. Completely forgot about St Patrick’s Day. Balloon viewing chasing was rained out but went to a birthday party. Was pretty darned hot here too.

  65. Well hello All. Sadly hubby didn’t want to go to White Night, so I was a bit bummed. Anyway home after work I showered then applied some Rochas Absolu. Sadly the predictions of fires came to be, and as I type this there is an active bushfire approx. 100kms from me. No deaths fortunately, however quite a few houses/ farm sheds lost.
    Oh ,and the wind is awful. Going to wear Carnal Flower .

  68. Home at last! Phew! am worn out. It’s not easy being an 18 year-old in a fifty two year-old body😬. But was a total blast. Today is Papillon Tobacco Rose. I can smell my own trail.
