Saturday Question: What Are Your Favourite Rose Scents?

Hello Fellow Fumies,

Every Saturday we have a Question, an idea purloined from Olfactoria’s Travels. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it is a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Over 100 responses I will draw a Scent Sample Pack (from my collection)
This week:

Rose Sample Pack

  1. Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur
  2. Yves Rocher Rose Oud
  3. Vintage Paco Rabanne Calandre
  4. Olympic Orchids Ballets Rouges

Saturday Question: What Are Your Favourite Rose Scents?

Rose has been a stalwart fragrance note for centuries. Almost everyone can find a rose that suits them. From the simple sharp green of Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose to the rich and textured Rochas Byzance there are thousands of stops in between. Wet, sweet, fruity, musk and oud roses galore, especially in the last five years.

I can’t wait to read your favourites and why they are.

My Answer:

You all know how much I love DIOR Oud Ispahan or Mitzah, Yves Rocher Rose Oud, JHaG Midnight Oud, Guerlain Rose Nacree or Nahema, Olympic Orchids Ballets Rouges, SOIVOHLE Rosa Sur Reuse, Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin and Fille en Aiguilles. Roses are a huge part of my fragrance wardrobe. Sometimes as a pivotal note, others as backup.

Mohur Neela Vermeire Straight Milan 2017

Parfumo gives these featured accords:
Top: Ambrette seed, Elemi resin, Cardamom, Carrot seed, Coriander seed, Black pepper
Heart: Hawthorn, Iris, Jasmine, Leather, Almond milk, Moroccan rose, Turkish rose, Violet

The fragrance I reach for most when roses are in my head is Neela Vermeire Creations Mohur. Yes, I’m sure it’s no surprise to any of you. There is something so glamorous, rich and spectacular about wafting such a multi faceted scent created with such love. Having worn Mohur for years now here in Australia and around the world I not only smell the scent of it but also have wonderful flashbacks to times worn away, doing amazing things with friends and seeing the world. Neela is also a mate of ours so I’m also spritzing her friendship every time.

My Saturday Question to you is:

What Are Your Favourite Rose Scents?

  1. Rose Potion or Rose Embers from Teone Reinthal Natural Perfumes – the freshest dewyest rose note I’ve ever smelled.

  2. Mohur is one of my favourite rose fragrances as well, both in EDP and in Extrait. I also like Nahéma but shame that the current EDP doesn’t last. Rose Barbare is quite nice too though a bit too much honeyed for me. Nicolaï’s Rose Royale from last year is a gorgeous take on fresh roses. Rive Gauche in vintage form is another of my favourite.
On the darker woodier side there’s Guerlain’s Rose Nacrée du Désert which I’m currently enjoying a lot and debating whether to get a full bottle. Rose Nacrée somewhat reminds me of Malle’s Portrait of a Lady, but that one I’m not too fond of. I’m not sure why. It smells quite lovely to begin with, but to my nose it just keeps “shouting” with the same voice afterwards and maybe that’s what bores me. I enjoy Diptyque’s Oud Palao as well, but it’s really really similar to Oud Ispahan.
Smolderose from January Scent Project is quite an interesting take on roses. The roasted seashells add a salty and slightly marine (not that calone kind of marine) facet to the rose. I quite like it as well.
As you see I’m a huge rose fragrance fan! One that I need to check out next is Aramis Callligraphy Rose, but it’s so rare and basically impossible to sample. Fighting the urge to blind buy a bottle…

  3. I am a huge rose lover. In my collection, I have roses of all sorts because I reach for different ones depending on my mood, season and weather condition. I enjoy Roses and More, Nightingale’s cup, Caron Rose. Parfait des Roses, Rosa Nobile and Sloan Rose when it is warm and when it starts turning cooler, I reach for Ensar Rose by SPA, Calligraphy Rose, Miroir des Majestes, David Yurman Extrait, Rosam, John Galliano, Smolderose and Rose Potion.

  4. Mohur Extrait is breathtaking…a rose I adored and miss very much due to its discontinuation status is Pacifica’s Egyptian Bergamot Rose (but the middle Marzipan has this in solid perfume so I often steal a few whiffs from the tin)….I also really like Eden Botanicals Egyptian Rose 10 % and Jasmine Rose 10%.

  5. My favorite is Penhaligon’s Vaara. I also really like Sunflowers Dream Petals, Calligraphy Rose, and Narciso For Her.

  6. 4160 Tuesday’s Who Knew? is my favourite perfume of the last year and am already halfway through a bottle. Sitill have a bit of Yves Rocher’s Rose Ansolue sweet and a bit boozy.

  7. I do love rose as a note but tend not to like soliflores so much.
    But a favourite? Hmmm 🤔
Well, my obsession with Rive Gauche has been well documented, then there is Magie Noire, Rose Nacree and Coco….but the Rose in these fragrances is like Shelley Winters in The Poseidon Adventure – a big star with a huge supporting cast.
If I had to pick one it would be Knowing. It is *mostly* rose to my nose (with some moss, woods and 80’s shoulder pads in there too)
It feels somewhat subtle, dry and masculine when I wear it. The total opposite of what I usually wear 😂 And, it’s longevity is amazing. Hangs around all day.
    Another interesting question thanks P!

  8. I love Andy Tauer’s Une rose chyprée (spelling?), but it is complex and I have to be in the mood for it, if not it annoys me after a couple of hours. I also own a bottle of JHaG Citizen Queen, easier to wear. There’s at least one perfume I really wish I had bought while it was still produced, Enlèvement au Sérail. Hope so much that beautiful, sensual blend of jasmine and rose will return one day.

Generally I don’t buy very rose-sentric perfumes, I prefer just smelling rose perfume briefly, so more on others than on myself.

  9. If you’d asked me this a few weeks back I would have said Portrait of a Lady, but something may have stolen her crown. I recently got E Coudray Rose Tuberose and am blown away by that. It is a close run race is all I can say. I came late to the Rose party, and only after smelling Paul Smith Rose did I realise that I liked rose in a perfume. So that was my gateway, and I still wear it and get loads of compliments too.

It’s so hard to make definite judgements when there’s always something new and interesting in perfume that can turn your head. Glad to have you on board with roses nowadays.

  11. I am a rose addict. My tops are Perfumer’s Workshop Tea Rose, Tauerville Rose Flash, LUSH Imogen Rose, Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin and Sa Majeste. There are so many more. Calligraphy Rose and a few others like Angel Schlesser.

  13. Have loved roses / Rose, since forever (yes, I’ve been around, lol)… I read everyone’s response so far, and the last one (Hamamelis – witchhazel, lol) mentioned Goutal’s Ce Soir our Jamais, which is the one I favor when I need a rich, opulent rose fix… I think it owes it’s pedigree to that uber classic of Rose & Jasmine i.e. Patou’s Joy. Another beautiful rose experience. A more contemporary version of the Queen of Flowers that I enjoy is ‘Rose Ideal’ by Anonyme. A very pink rose, light, airy, a bit of the stem and leaves, but yet quintessentially Rose – definitely a soliflore. The rose note, as the jasmine note are both stalwarts of the perfume pyramid, almost ubiquitous in most floral fragrances, and sometimes even in those that are not primarily known as ‘florals’. Salve Rosa, long may she reign.

  14. Ooh, what a question! I’m a huge fan of rose-based perfumes, my biggest favourites being Parfum Sacre, La Fille de Berlin, Rouge d’Hermes and Kazimi. All of these are roses mixed with spices and/or woods, but I also like wearing, – less often nowadays, – rose chypres such as Agent Provocateur, 900 or Paloma.

Never tried Mohur but it sounds great!

  15. It’s funny; I say I’m not a rose fan, but there are 3 I adore and could swim in. Teone’s Rosalie, one of Andy Tauer’s – the one with a screeching metallic note – and Smolderose by January Scent Project. Beside these, I really do not seek out rose scents. I own a few, such as Nahema, Body something by Burberry, a stach of modern Chloes, etc, but they rarely make it out of the hardly ever wear basket.

To top it off, my yardstick of rose perfection was shaped by 70s rose scented bubble baths and Yardley sprays. Soliflore type rose scents. Nothing like them.

Rose throws me into a contradictory mess.

Being such a new rose lover I’m trying to sniff so many more. My fave right now is Tiziana Terenzi Gold Rose Oudh of course. Closely followed by ELDO Eau De Protection. But I also want FM aims Rose and Lipstick Rose. And maybe one day the Serge roses… I really could go on!

  19. La Fille de Berlin for dark & spicy.
Grace by Grace Coddington for green & fresh.
In Love Again for fruity & juicy.
    Galop for rose & leather.
Santal Majescule for sandalwood & spices.
Rossy de Palma for don’t mess with me…

There are others I wear like Coco and L’Ombre dans L’eau which do have significant rose notes but somehow I don’t think if them as ‘rose perfumes’.

  20. I agree on Mohur, it’s such a beauty and very wearable in any occasion.
I’m a fan of Rose Velours from the VC&A Collection Extraordinaire, which is a woody rose and my latest flame is Penhaligon’s Much Ado About the Duke, a spicy rose with a touch of leather and alcohol. Exquisite.

  23. I remember how much I loved Roger & Gallet Rose Thé, and Yardley’s English Rose – the former in scented soaps, the latter in eau de toilette. I felt like a sophisticated 11 year old!

These days I grow and adore roses, but I can’t wear many, for some reason – I gave away my split of Ce Soir ou Jamais, for example, because I just didn’t like it after the first half hour. I do love my sample of La Fille de Berlin, though.

  24. I love Rose, but I feel like I’m getting too picky with it for my own good. So I only really have two rose loves in
    1. Frederic Malle – Portrait of a Lady
    2. Papillon – Tobacco Rose

I am yet to try Mohur but it sounds very promising!

  25. Last year I did a month of roses (February), so I have many favorite rose perfumes in my collection. But if I had to name just, let’s say, five – Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, Amouage Lyric, Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady, Les Parfums de Rosine Rose d’Amour and Le Labo Rose 31. But I could go on and on and on… I should probably go back to reading everybody’s replies to join my vote for those beautiful perfumes that didn’t get to my mini-list.

But I think I have now found a rose that fits me: the voile of rozy.

  29. Fun times reading the comments. I adore fresh-cut roses from the garden, especially the highly scented ones. But I favor perfumes with roses blended into a floral bouquet. I do love PW Tea Rose, just a light spritz is enough. And I miss the R&G rose soaps, they were beautiful.
