SOTD 16.7 – 22.7.2018

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 16.7 – 22.7.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Rockin’ some Fico di Amalfi from ADP , fig galore , excelent scent a 10 out of 10 but with average to low performance :(( around 3 hours mark.

  2. For tonight’s SOTB I couldn’t face anything too challenging so am wearing Citron Boboli by Jardin Retrouve, it is a pretty but short lived soft and sweet lemon. Def cologne strength.

  3. Yesterday I grabbed a bottle from the back of the shelf, one that has been sorely neglected in my headlong rush to try the bounty that is on offer.

Farmacia S.S. Annunzita’s Sweet Musk turned out to be just what was called for on a hot summer’s day. Jasmine, Rose, and Musk, over a base of Amber, Patchouli, and Vanilla. It was soft and lovely, with a gentle persistence that lasted through an entire work day. I received many compliments from my usually mum coworkers.

Sweet Musk has now been advanced to the front of the shelf, with apologies for the neglect to which it had been subjected. To further make amends, I shall rock it again today. Cheers.

  4. Voyage d’Hermes edp again. Seriously, this does seem more masculine than the edt. But at times it is just right. I find the bottle has a good, modern design and the purchase was partly motivated by the bottle, which does not happen very often.

    • HA! I totally get the bottle directed purchase Ingeborg,
Interesting that you find the EdP more masculine. I’m not familiar enough with them to give an opinion but it does make me want to try them both together.

    • I have a mini bottle of Voyage but now I’m curious to check the concentration. For a long time my vSO and I used that perfume as a shared one on our plane trips, and it smelled unisex enough for both of us to wear comfortably though I always thought it was leaning masculine a little. Then I got tired of it and switched to another perfume for trips. I should probably revisit my old favorite.

  5. Voleur de Roses, perfect for a rainy day! After two weeks of mad heat it started raining so hard that I got soaking wet in less than half a minute outside! Still, I like it when a perfume opens up the way it should, I missed the “Rose Thief” a bit, and cool weather definitely suits it better.

      • Thank you, Melanie! It’s a beautiful scent, I’m glad I own it (it being a great bargain really helped seal the deal :)) I don’t know why but its opening notes remind of the grand Magie Noire.

    • I like this one too! Have a sample – it’s definately worthy of a second go. I love too many Montales. You smell delicious Brigitte x

      • I hope it doesn’t sound too strange but I love Montales on someone else: they’re all a bit too powerful for me. I do wear Aoud Rose Petals, such a remarkable rose perfume.

        Liked by 1 person

        • yes, many of the Montales I have sampled are definitely powerhouses! This one is not so bad…it reminds me a lot of Light Blue which I happen to like because I wore it when it first came out, before it became so ubiquitous (like Giorgio, which I also wore when no one knew what it was) and everyone started not liking it.

          • I actually think Light Blue is pretty good, it’s got such a lovely fresh vibe. I’m going to check Soleil de Capri out when I have a chance 😉

  6. Wearing a spritz of 34 boulevard Saint Germain from a sample. Smells marvelous, it teeters just on the edge of decadent. Even the little paper box the sample lives in has a wonderful scent. Thank you to Portia for mentioning this beauty in the Saturday Question.

  7. Cedre sambac for a frustrating travel day where anything that could be late was late. But, my luggage finally showed up, so did my train, and so, eventually, did I.

These new Hermes numbers are odd: two or three sprays from the wee bottle and i get nothing, or a pale ghost wisped away in half an hour. Six… And it’s an all day cloud. Ok, maybe eight.

  8. There is half an inch left of my L’Heure Bleue in the vintage rose bottle so I dabbed that all over me…no point allowing it to evaporate I think. It was luxe!

  9. PdN Weekend in Normandy. This has a lovely herbal aspect floating over it, very refreshing on a humid and hot day.

    • I bet you smell great!
I have the one called only Weekend. Not quite as good as the original Weekend à Deauville, but good both in summer and for use in the office.

  10. Amouage Ciel before going to the hairdresser and spending a small fortune there. Curl was from a sample and this light scent is very true to the picture on the folded card, light blue sky and sand. It really makes me want to try some of the modern, lighter Amouages.

Guerlain Cherry Blissom in the afternoon, a very crisp and un-sweet take on cherry blossom. Very far from the pink and sweet mainstream interpretations.

  11. I’m wearing a bunch of “for men”s: so far, I’ve liked Allure Homme Sport Cologne, Knize Ten and Le Male most. Surprisingly, Hugo Boss Intense is pretty good.

It’s actually an interesting story how these samples fell into my lap: I’ve listed a few perfumes for sale on the Internet, and a couple weeks ago a woman called me to say that someone had stolen my pictures for his ad. We talked about perfumes for two hours, and I promised to make decants of some of my perfumes for her (Shalimar,Mitsouko, Tabu, a few classic legends including some chypres), and so I did and sent them to her. Today I got a package from her with lovely gifts which are awesome (and made my wishlist at least three items longer, lol!).

  12. I’m on my hols since Sunday so I haven’t checked in for a couple of days. Perfume has been taking a bit of a rest as I’ve been to the beach. I’ve brought decants with me of SJP Unspoken, No 19 Poudre, NR Santal Musc, R & G Osmanthus. Going on a boat trip later this morning and think I’ll wear Osmanthus as it’s very fresh and sparkling. Having a sleepless night since hubby woke me by going downstairs for a drink and missing last step. Thump! Then he’s too warm, then he’s too cold with air con on. My patience level isn’t good🙄

  13. My canister of Montale Soleil de Capri is done!!! So I will be moving on to my full bottle of Phlur Greylocke next…this is the one and probably only vetiver I truly adore where vetiver has the star role….usually my preference for vetiver is merely as a supporting player.

    Liked by 1 person

    • at least I think of it as full on vetiver but someone else may not…there is a sweetness and chewiness to it for lack of a better word…I think apple and pine are also notes….I find it highly addictive and can’t stop huffing my wrist every time I wear it.

      Like

        • Brigitte, I’m intrigued by Greylocke since I love vetiver a lot. Pine note adds some sharpness to the mix, doesn’t it?

          Like

          • It does but there is also some sweetness to it as well…not too much info on all the notes but a few folks have mentioned apple so I wonder if that’s were the sweetness is coming from….

  16. My SOTD was Irresistible For Men (the green one), one that almost got away: eleven years ago, before I could even entertain the idea of ever becoming a full-blown perfumista, I fell in love with this Givenchy but I didn’t buy it ’cause I was on a strict budget and a bit intimidated by the fact that this Irresistible was aimed at men. Ha! Sadly, Givenchy discontinued it so it took me a couple years to find a nice (half-) bottle of this elixir.

  17. Yesterday was L’Artisian Al Oudh. Today Tokyo Milk Dark – Bulletproof. Haven’t worn this’ in ages. Was looking for my Bottega Veneta and found this instead. Its a bit sweeter than i remember. Description on bottle says Smoked tea, Coconut Milk, Crushed Cedar and Ebony Woods.

    Like

      • Well, I dont’ detect coconut at all. This might be the reason for the sweetness to it but i wouldn’t have picked coconut if i didn’t know the description. I think the cedar and tea are the strongest notes. And as it warms up it gets a bit toffee, caramel – not a sharp scent, but soft and round. Well on me anyway! Tokyo Milk Dark scents are rather interesting – their blends quite often have one element that is a little left field.

    • You’re a rare bird amongst perfume lovers. I start the day with one scent but after the shower it’s all you can spritz buffet, lol! Not every day, of course, but quite often.

      • I am old school I guess. In the beginning of my perfume jouney I always had a small wardrobe of 5-7 full bottles and it wasn’t unusual for me to wear the same scent for days on end. Then you start reading perfume blogs and you want to try everything under the sun….as you said, an “all you can spritz buffet”…..I think I am back to wanting to minimalize to make things easier and just do a “wash, rinse, repeat”….especially if I really like how something smells.

        Like

        • I hear you, perfume blogs make you desire too many scents. I used to be more loyal to my few bottles in the beginning but now even getting a sniff of a different perfume off of my wrist or from a vial is like changing a tune. Too much of a good thing seems like a foreign concept when it comes to perfumes. Of course, I don’t mix `em when I go out or meet someone.

  21. Rouge Malachite was my scent of the day. My decant’s almost finished, I guess I need some more of this splendid juice. As for my SOTN, it’s vintage edt of Mitsouko. I was chatting with a friend from Eau My Soul, Mitsouko came up so I took out the bottle to take a picture of it and wham! I’m wearing it. I love it dearly.

  22. A bit of a rarity today – Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme Concentrated Cologne. This was an op shop find, and I have never encountered this concentrated version elsewhere. It’s not listed on Fragrantica. It smells much like VC&A PH, but has a fair bit of oomph on first spraying and lasts forever.

I have the regular VC&A PH, a big vintage splash bottle and this version, and I love them all.

    • Finds like this make it even more exciting. I never knew there was a Safari (for women) cologne before I bought it 🙂

      Like

      • did you only wear Safari perfume? I had several minis of those many years ago…it was a beautiful perfume….I recently got to try the EDT and it was as stunning as I remembered it to be.

        Like

        • Brigitte, Safari is one of my favourite perfumes ever! Glad you like it.
I’ve got full bottles of Safari eau de parfum and cologne, both made in 1989, and I had a tiny bottle of pure perfume. Is there eau de toilette, as well?

          Liked by 1 person

          • Yes, I am pretty certain that there is also an EDT!!!! I thought that this is what my decant was. I did not know that it came in cologne! I only had several bottles of the pure perfume (the tiny sizes that i think were gifts with purchases)….It is an AMAZING scent and I could see it being someone’s signature…I think the perfume might smell slightly different from the EDT….Mals from Muse in Wooden Shoes adores Safari and I think she mentioned that the variations of it are slightly different.

            Liked by 1 person

          • Mals said that she did not remember an EDT but there is a difference between the perfume (sweeter and more ambery) and the cologne…I think the EDP came out later. I looked on ebay and all I could find was EDP and those tiny mini perfume bottles that I had…loads and loads for sale! Must be all the “Gift with Purchase” bottles from the 1990s!

            Like

        • Brigitte, your memory serves you well, I’m from Russia. Truth is, I got all of my Safari bottles from eBay (the US, France, and surprisingly, the cologne from Hong Kong). You’re absolutely right, all of the concentrations are a tad bit different, I find that EDP and parfum have a stronger rose presence reminding me of Hermes’s Rouge sans sandalwood whereas the cologne is greener. I’m looking forward to finding out what EDT is like 🙂
