SOTD 20.8 – 26.8.2018

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 20.8 – 26.8.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

    • I wish I could wear it, but it just makes me smell like lemon mousse cheesecake. I passed my decant on to a friend, though, who smells gorgy wearing it. So I bet you do too.

  1. I’m starting my day with a few spritzes of Fragonard Verveine- zingy but it doesn’t last long. I will be sorting through samples looking for a handful to use up this week so will report later!

  2. After all that chat yesterday… Cedre Sambac. Though not as much as I prefer wearing, because flights and alien office.

  3. Tonight I have rediscovered my little bottle of Parfum Sacre and remembering why I like it so much. Old school and just beautiful.

  4. Pottered around the duty free a bit aimlessly on my way home this evening. The new Dior Joy? Utterly forgettable pinky floral white musky sweet stuff. Almost offensively inoffensive. Finally encountered some Chanel No.18–after one assistant kept telling me I was wrong, and that it was No.19–and that’s more dangerous. Tried it on my skin and sniffed it happily all the way home.

  5. Two days of back to back intense seven hour drives. this morning we left before 6am…no caffeine or even shower for me…came home and did a massive cleaning of the girls room because they are gone and I can now finally get into all the nooks and crannies and wash all the linens and what nots and mop the floor.

After shower kept it simple with a simple blend of patchouli and sweet almond body oil. I have been up since 4am and I am pooped.

  6. My SOTN was Misia but as I was filling a few samples for a girl who bought some perfume from me, I inevitably got some vintage Nina Ricci on me (l’Air du temps & Nina). Those perfumes of yore!.

  7. Found the Etat Libre d’Orange sample set that Lillibet gifted me (thank you) Yesterday was Like This – I’m not sure how to describe but notes on packet say tangerine, ginger, pumpkin (huh?), neroli, Rose, vetiver and musks – I really liked it. I like a few from this brand – Dangerous Complicity too.
Today I’m wearing Fils De Dieu – lime, spices, amber, rose, jasmine and musk to name a few. Will see how long it lasts as I found Like This needed constant top ups.

  8. Remains gloomy and COOOOOLD today. Only 6C at 10AM, but feels like 3.6C. Brrr. I haven’t slept since 3AM…had a recurring bad dream which I simply couldn’t shake, and I got up at 8.30AM to make a fire instead of using the Central Heating. Going out to lunch with my friend. Will wear Samsara EDP

  9. Today is physio day and am going to challenge her nose with Mona di Orio Lux. I can’t even describe it, but it has an overripe orange top and then resinous, maybe myrhh just humming along.

  10. I tried my sample of Mayura today. Luca Turin called it a monster floral with massive civit. He was not kidding. Usually animalic/musk scents turn sweet and powdery on me…not this time! We are experiencing a nasty, smoky haze in Seattle from forest fires in British Columbia and Oregon. Maybe not a good day to try such an intense perfume 😉

  11. Musette of Perfume Posse sent me a sampler of a niche house I had never even heard of. Today I am wearing Half Moon. Really pretty creamy white floral. I like it a lot. I have four more from the brand (Atelier Bloem) that I will sample this week.

  12. Superstitious. Lots of it. I think I am leaving sillage as broad as a motorway. It grows in this weather (It’s only 20 degrees today, but 95 % humidity.)

  13. Neela’s Pichola today (thanks to our Portia) OMG this is lush, there’s a lot going on here. Perfect for housework day to glam it up.

  14. Used up a sample of Le Parfum de Therese. I thought it had a bit more juice, only a few drops left sadly. At least I got those before they evaporated. Will need to find something else in a few hours.

  15. What a beautiful cool overcast day we have! We might even get some drizzle! (How often do you hear all these words together? 😉 But in North Cal where we do not usually get any rain from May to October, a once-in-a-while freakish rainstorm in August is something to look forward to)

Wearing Guerlein Habit Rouge Dress Code. I do not understand why this one should be a limited edition – it’s such a great perfume!

  16. Up with insomnia so I thought I would do some testing…La Collection Musc…all five of them up and down my arms…Florentina and Helicriss are my favorite of the bunch. The sampler is so beautifully packaged. I think I will give it to one of the mini Marzipans for Christmas…makes a nice stocking stuffer. The hubs has now woken up as well and says to me “are you testing something? I smell perfume” LOL! Yup, one in the morning and the house reeks! Only chez Marzipan 🙂

Later at a more reasonable hour and after my shower I will test Atelier Bloem Iris.

    Like

    • The Iris is interesting…something else in there…maybe cardamom? I also sprayed Peony and Suede Blush in the air and walked through…because today the eldest of the mini marzipans turns the “legal to drink” age and she considers this Jo Malone to be her signature scent…I bought her the huge bottle of it when she turned 18 🙂 The middle one got Ginger Biscuit when she turned 18. Not sure what to get the youngest when he turns 18…..suggestions?

      • Ah so you have heard of the brand!!! Today I am testing 1614…it’s a bit harsh at the onset but then the drydown smells exactly like my beloved and discontinued Heaven by the Gap. If it weren’t for the weird onset and the fact that it is more than 10 times the amount I paid for Heaven I might have considered a full bottle down the road. For now I am happy enough with the sample.

  18. The unthinkable happened this morning. I left the house without spraying myself. This is strictly verboten round here, and I can’t remember when it last happened 🤔 But no panic, I always have something in my bag so Mure et Musc it is.

    • Ha! Perhaps, I should keep a sample or two in my bag, too: leaving home unscented is not unheard of since I spent a lot of time choosing my outfit or something else.

      Like

      • Yes keeping samples in your bag or even a scented hand cream is a good idea. I also keep things in my desk at work and our bathroom always has stuff folks don’t want … usually lots of Bath and Body Works but I have put some nicer things in there from time to time. Another good way to spread the love with unwanted samples

  19. I spent the whole evening yesterday going through my stash of samples: a fellow perfumista I met on Instagram decided to let go of some of her vials to clear up some space, and so did I. I can see now that we’re gonna end with more samples than we have now, but it still is so much fun!

SOTD was Sel de Vetiver by the wonderful Celine Ellena.

          • Most of the ones I’ll be sending are rare vintage stuff, La Rose Jacqueminot, La Rose Giraud (LOVE that one), Patou Amour Amour, a couple Cotys (Les Muses and something else), Jolie Madame (both edt and extrait), Sikkim and so on, the overall amount is about 20 vials and 3 minibottles of Paris and Y by YSL, half a bottle of Safari. I kept them for future references but now I’ve realised that I remember those I’d like to own in a FB so there’s no reason to let them sit in my drawer until they vapourize or turn bad. The generous new friend has sent me a bunch of niche samples. I can hardly wait!

      • For me, yes! For other people? Don’t care (much). The chap who sits next to me these days doesn’t give a hoot. I did the usual thing when we all moved around–which happens every few months–and asked him to tell me if my perfume ever bothered him, or if I wore something that he really didn’t like so I could avoid it for the office. He said he hadn’t ever noticed, not like some people in the street who wore giant toxic clouds that leave you choking. Then sniffed, and said “aye, that’s nice.”

And the gym is kind of stinky, so, it will always be an improvement!

        • Hello all. Thanks for your concern. A bad back is just part of my job ,sadly. However, some days are really bad, pain-wise. I must sound like a miserable git…so I shall try to stay more positive and fume- focused. To that end, I’m currently swooning in the very last drop of a decant of Bal a Versailles. It will only last until I shower in a couple hour’ time. Then another ‘lucky dip’ I shall return to let you know who gets the Main Prize today.

          • I know exactly how having a bad back makes you feel, and no, you don’t sound miserable at all. Hope you’ll get some rest today or tomorrow.

  24. Started with a testing of Atelier Bloem 1614….as I mentioned above starts off harsh but dries down to the exact replica of the Gap’s Heaven (d/c scent which I love) except it is more than 10 times the price.

Later I may top it off with Incense Pure….the warm weather amps up the vanilla in this one and it is so addictive. Hope this one comes back in the lineup when Laurie finds a buyer for her business.

    • Hey Jyotsna,
It took me a while to understand how beautiful Fleur Narcotique is. The name had me expecting something so OTT it was never going to live up to. Once I let that go the whole fragrance takes on a pearlier sheen and I can enjoy its luminosity.

  25. Hello work was ABYSMAL….. my back is screaming. I’ve had a hot shower, and applied a beautiful scent. It is a sweet resinous ‘number’ lol. Sadly the wording on the sample vial has rubbed off, so I have no idea of the name.

  26. Testing the last of the Altelier Bloem …. Nieuw Amsterdam….a tame soft leathery our to my nose…I enjoy it. Later I will spray on some Assam of India as a thank you to Val for making me laugh so hard earlier this week when I needed it. Also a perfumistas friend says she gets incense in this one so my nose will try to hunt for that note.

A new hand cream Maine Beach Mclaren Vale Olive oil with Fig and Pear smells delightful. And because that’s not enough, I’m trying hard to like Hiram Greens Slowdive. Sadly I’m not enjoying this one. Had read lots of good stuff about this one but alas, not for me.

I caved and bought Heaven yesterday for 25 USD for 100 ml…enabler pin goes to cassieflower, Undina and above mentioned friend who encouraged me to do it before the prices go up astronomically as bottles become scarce (y’all know how THAT goes!!!)

  32. Last night’s fundraiser perfume was LPRN Black Perfecto. I have a generous decant and it was all I could do to not buy a bottle in Paris (because I love the bottle). The decant is probably all I will ever need of the juice. The weather today is uninspiring and school starts tomorrow. Stash sounds pretty good so I may give that a spritz.

  33. Monday afternoon. I slept in until about 9AM. I’m feeling particularly fragile and I want to curl up in the foetal position and cry. I’m staying home today, in a ‘safe harbour’. I will shower soon ,then go for a little walk around my garden { a few daffodils and jonquils have sprouted}. I may even have a visit from the neighbourhood cat, whom hubby has nicknamed Checkers. Perfume wise, I’m burning a Crabtree/ Evelyn Christmas candle called Noel…gorgeous resinous incense gloriousness. For my skin? I’ve found a sample of Madgredoe Poupre.
    Apologies for the long post.
