Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 27.8 – 2.9.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Today I wore Russian Musk, it was still discernible after half an hour in the pool. It cheered me up from my sad mood all afternoon, love how perfume can do that!

  2. Villa of the Mysteries Carthago. Haven’t worn this one in ages and it needs some love..dry fig, rose, calamus, styrax and labdanum. It’s interesting, to say the least.

      • I think you would like it P because I know you like the ones that are off the beaten path which this one is . The calamus makes it different from mainstream offerings

      • I actually won this one in a draw wore it quite a bit but then put it in the basement and forgot about it. I was down in my basement yesterday making 1ml sample vials from my full bottles for my mom (she uses 3-5 of them a day when she goes Latin dancing or to zumba so I filled up an entire coffee can of vials for her…the basement was reeking!!!) and I found it. Like I said, it may not be for everyone but I rather like the oddity of it.

        • You must have inherited your love for big sillage from your mum, that’s great. She sounds amazing, by the way: I love Latin dancing!

          • Ha! yes…she has had multiple bottles of perfumes in her house for as long as I can remember…this is where I get my love of vintage from…except when I wore them in my youth they were not considered vintage! I once got berated as a teenager for wearing no 5 in ballet class. I did not care…I wore what I wanted to wear regardless of who it was marketed towards. I think today folks are more open to disregarding gender and age “requirements” when it comes to perfume…..case in point, my 81 year old dad rocks in roses!!!

          • Aww, you’re freethinkers, the whole lot of you. Your parents must be fun to hang out with. It’s true that nowadays the reign of gender-specific stereotypes is becoming a thing of the past, yay!

      • Oh I would no recommend a blind buy on this one. Thus far no one has expressed the desire to steal it….yet! I might be done with it soon anyway. I made a decant for a friend and some samples of it for my mother

  3. Finally a hint of Fall in Phoenix, I actually had cool water from the tap to wash my face! Immediately changed vanity sprays from hot to cool. I’m in 90’s Jolie Madame. A hint of violet and leather. Not what she was (Lookin’ for trouble, mister) in the ’70’s, but still several dark streets away from the carnival lights.

  4. Beaufort’s Coeur de Noir this morning until it all got washed away by swimming and showers, then dug out my sample of Galop which I’d still not tried on skin. I am slightly sad: it just turns a bit ordinary on me. It’s nice… but, you know, not what it can be. Still, many quids saved by not developing a mad craving for that one.

  5. Yves Rocher secrets d’essences Accord Chic (Olivier Cresp and Marie Salamagne): pink pepper, elemi, iris. Actually quite nice and wearable, and traces remain almost 12 hours later. Plus got it on sale in the YR store on the Champs Elysses this summer!

  7. It seems I’m better at finishung body products such as lotions and creams, than I am at finishing perfume. But today I wore L’Occitane Grapefruit and rhubarb (or is it the other way around?). Anyway, a lot left in the bottle. Really need to use it more as a room spray.

So fed up with sorting and packing everything in my office. We move to a new building without much bookshelves. Will find something greener for tomorrow, to keep me going!

        • and LOL on the name change P!!! I was kinda liking the crickey though as I would love to be buff and fit and sporting glorious hair in my age!

          • As a former ballerina, I bet you are/were stronger than I’ll ever be! I’m not even slightly buff right now…ask me closer to the end of the year and I hope to claim it again properly.

But be careful, because I will sing you the sweet siren song of strength training (srsly: it’s one of the best possible things for women as we get a bit older, and is fun.)

          • Crickey I retired my pointe shoes thirty years ago. I was very regimented with exercising until the second Marzipan was born. Unfortunately I am very thin which means that there is less motivation for me to exercise. But given my age I really should do some weights to prevent osteoporosis.

          • I am still in awe of ballerinas’ strength, though. That level of control just blows my mind.
Yep, the bone strength is a massive bonus of lifting. But, also…i found real joy in it. Strength sports are pretty liberating, i think, for women, particularly the non-twenty-somethings among us. I love that it’s become more widespread.

          • Yes, crikey I would imagine a sense of euphoria in being able to lift weights and just exercising in general on a regular basis. I really do need to carve out some time and find the energy to do this. I am hoping that when the last mini marzipan leaves for college next year I will make this a priority in my life. You are a great inspiration to me!!!

  8. I received the generous gifts from a new acquaintance of mine today (a few Nasomattos, Molinards and a bunch of niche I don’t know of much), so now I’m wearing several scents at once! Will continue my discovery tomorrow.

      • Hi Portia! Plenty of them seem like a FB material (oh-oh): modern Molinards, especially Habanita (I haven’t tried the vintage formula but I really like this one), Molinard de Molinard, Mugler’s Chyprissime & Over the musk, Rosarium by Angela Campagna (smells like an Orthodox church), to start with. Colony by Patou and Blouse by YSL left me speechless, both are incredibly beautiful.

        Like

        • I am curious about the modern Molinards…if I am not mistaken they come in purple bottles which look lovely..I have been eyeballing the musk one because folks say it smells like champaca. I am looking forward to hearing what you have to say when you get around to wearing them.

          • Brigitte, I’m sorry for not answering earlier: I’m a bit all over the place what with the end of August and the last efforts to at least pretend to get some order into my life. Yes, Molinard has a range in unified purple bottles, so far I’ve only tried Violette which is supposed to be really nice but smells like apple juice on me :(, and Figue which is lovely but I need to give it more skin time. Their other line sold in vintage style transparent square bottles is more to my liking: there’s the classic Molinard de Molinard, fruity AND gorgeous Nirmala (I don’t normally like fruity frags but this one is outstanding). And last but not least, Les Amoureux is one of the best citrus colognes I’ve tried, it’s bright and sparkling and why did I not buy a bottle when they were cheaper?

            Like

          • Diana- please no apologies necessary! Sometimes i forget to answer questions too if I am reading to fast! I had the Molinard de Molinard and was gorgeous! As I said below a scent that my ballet teacher wore. I also had a decant of Nirmala which I loved (smelled like Angel to me and then I read that Terry Mugler’s mother wore only Nirmala so that makes sense). I like the uniformity of those purple bottles and for a while I was eyeballing the Musc, Fig, Patchouli and Amber ones as they were discounted online. But I never pulled the trigger because I would be breaking my blind buy rule and also, I really DON’T need any more full bottles in the house 😉 . I can live and sniff vicariously through all of you! I always enjoy reading about new scents that APJers are sniffing and testing and wearing and loving!!!!

            Like

          • Now that you’ve mentioned it, I do detect a shadow of Angel in Nirmala, it seems closer to the EDT version, though. It’s nice to know that Thierry wasn’t lying when he told the world about the idea behind the fragrance: I don’t care much for all the purple prose some perfume houses love to attach to their scents 🙂

Up it popped, in a set with body lotion, exactly as I had before. I bid on it and won! I scarcely believe it, but happy days. It was not remotely expensive either.

I dug deep into the closet collection this morning and found one that I used to wear quite often before I veered off into niche territory and abandoned it, one of the very few designers I still own–Marc Jacobs “Daisy”. Perhaps I am too old to pull it off, but it put a smile on my face and lifted my spirits on this foggy day.

  14. Montales Ginger Musk which reminds me a lot of Jovan’s Touche from the late 1970s. Does anyone remember that one? This one is a powerhouse even on my scent devouring skin but the drydown is perfection. I made several samples of this for my mom and a decant for a friend so I am fairly certain this bottle will be done by today (yes, I plan on re-applying ’cause that’s what I do 😉 !!!)

  15. I can still smell the remnants of Habanita from the last night. It’s incredibly beautiful with its sweet tobacco overtones. If the modern version is good, how great the vintage must be?

      • Portia, you describe the vintage exactly as I thought it would be. I’ll try to find a minibottle or a sample, as for the modern Habanita I definitely need a full bottle.

  16. Well today was something of an eye opener. I was wearing La Femme Prada Intense, nice enough, nothing that rocks my world really. Got into work and three people said I smelled lovely. Alrighty then, that’s great, happy days.
And then. . . Went to PO to pick up my lovely package from Crikey. Got back to office, opened it in a hurry, tried one spray, ok maybe two of Superstitious and whoosh, a bubble of aldehydes. Two of the girls shouted out to me ‘what’s that? It’s GORGEOUS” So it is a huuuge hit round here. And I totally agree, it surely is gorgeous. Thanks again to our Crikey😍

Oh the joy of Saturday morning!! I am really enjoying having a TV again ,though. I can very easily see myself becoming a series binge – watcher. Perfume- wise I’m going to celebrate the first day of Spring {despite the fact it is only going to reach 9C} with the gorgeous Le Chasse Aux Papillion…..Chasing Butterflies. Perhaps the scent might brighten me up.

Septembers means I should start saving for my new years treats. Maybe something other than a Lutens.

Today I’m trying Dilettante and even though it doesn’t give it in the notes list, I’m getting a definite honey vibe in the mix. It’s very rich, and I only had three spritzes. Will top it off with a few more later for a night out.
