I seldom binge watch anything on TV.   I don’t have the attention span, nor the time, and am pretty fussy about what I watch.  Not that I wanna appear as a snotty bitch, I am an EastEnders fan after all.  Still it is autumn and cookie season is in full swing.  I spend a lot of time in my kitchen, which makes it ideal for hammering my way through several hours of TV, as I make and weigh hundreds of dough balls.

I binge wore Cèdre Sambac basically for the month of July.  Every single day.  I could not stop.  I had used up a travel size between April and June and as it came to an end I bought a bottle, knowing I could not bear to be without it.  In all my years of being a perfumista, this has never happened.  It is so beguiling and narcotic that I took to it like a drug.  Talking of drugs, you might wanna take a look at my Strange Tales series which will feature on A Bottled Rose the last Friday of each month.

Hermès describe Cèdre Sambac as being raw, voluptuous.  Nagel has created a very clever fragrance.  The notes are simply given as jasmine and cedar.  The two of them wrap themselves around each other in total unification.  The creamy jasmine sambac being a little more dominant in the summer heat.  In the cooler autumnal weather the cedar feels warm and on top, veiling the jasmine a little.   The jasmine  and cedar switch between being sometimes more green, and sometimes creamy,  a touch of sweetness,  kept at bay with the light sharpness of the wood.  A fragrance for all seasons.  There is a soft inkling  of suede in the dry down, which places the Cèdre Sambac so adeptly into the Hermès home.  Tara fell in love with it too.

I have binge watched six out of ten hours over the last two days of Trust.  Directed by Danny Boyle, and starring Donald Sutherland, Harris Dickinson and Hilary Swank, it tells some of the stories of the Gettys; one of America’s wealthiest and unhappiest families.   It begins in 1973, when John Paul Getty III is kidnapped.  Those as old as me may remember it happening.  I love Sutherland in the role as he, as an actor was so prevalent in movies from the early seventies, not least of all Don’t Look Now.  He fits so well as Old Man Getty in Trust.  Hilary Swank is excellent as Gail Getty, mother of JPG III.   Although the series is shot with the high tech of 2018, the effects from the seventies, flash you back to that era.  Boyle does a great job.  And the music – Pink Floyd, Bowie, Hawkwind, Jefferson Airplane, Thunderclap Newman, Uriah Heep – superb.   I dunno if I would sit down and spend ten hours watching this in couch potato mode, probably not.  But it is the perfect Cookie Kitchen entertainment and I am loving every second.

    • Hi Portia! Trust is great. What is astounding to me though, is that the real story is even more mind blowing. What a freaking weird family. I love CS as much now as when I bought it, albeit I no longer wear it every day. That was such a weird trip ….. xxxxxx

  3. Great post, Val. Cedre Sambac is such an unsuspecting fragrance. You’d think in passing that it is the type you’d addicted to but it is totally beguiling. It always feels right and I’m looking forward to seeing how the cedar dominates as the weather cools. Such a clever composition.

    • Hey Tara! I love it that we fell for this one together. It links us, and that is something wonderful in the perfume world. The cedar is definitely at the front in the cooler weather, which as I said I think will allow it to be worn in winter. It might be more oriental in the cold weather. We shall see! Hugs. xxxx

  4. I bought a 15ml travel spray of this, and was a little ambivalent to start with. Until I upped the dose and fell in love with it. I rarely wear the same scent even two days in a row–with perfume, though there are things I love madly, I hop about like a distracted sparrow.

    In pretty much everything else, though, I have binge tendencies: reading whole series of novels in a row, devouring box sets, eating the whole bar of chocolate, wanting to lift *all* the weights…smoking the whole pack (ok, I quit that nasty habit).

    • Hey Crikey! Oh my gosh – good we weren’t friends years ago, we would probably have killed each other off. You do need to spray big time with CS – it makes all the difference. As I have mentioned – it was bizarre – I have never worn anything more than a two or three days in a row, and that is rare. But this stuff was my Summer 2018 in a bottle. Which was fine – since I spent the summer in the gym instead of at the lake. You know? Bussis 🙂

I can relate to binge watching TV, oh yes – Happy Valley, and most recently 18 episodes of Unforgotten! – and have been known to wear the same scent for a few days in a row, though never as long as a month, haha. I must retry Cedre Sambac now it is autumn. It is mostly animalic throughout on me – I seem to bring out the filth in the the jasmine from the off – but there may yet be a seasonal twist to come.

    • Hi V! I binge watched Happy Valley because you told me to. Unforgotten? Is that a BBC thing? Eighteen episodes is a lot, the ten I just watched was already pushing it. CS is quite animalic, yeah. I doubt it will be any different then. Although you could be surprised, stranger things have happened. Hahahahahaha. Bonkers. Hugs, xxxxxx

  6. Instant lemming. Binge behaviour? Is there any other kind? Narcos on Netflix followed by anything remotely connected to drugs/cartels/violence. Sicario (original) movie and soundtrack. My gym playlist. Never changes or expands. Same 8 tracks on a loop.
    Coronation Street. Eating. Specifically whipped cream and anything that goes remotely with it. I have confessed and feel better for it. I’m assuming that I am duly forgiven so that I may now continue my sinful ways. Thank you.

  7. Hi Val! Cedre Sambac truly is, as you’ve aptly described it, a clever scent. I only own a sample but it’s definitely seems FB-worthy. As for binge-watching TV series, it’s a “yes” for me. I prefer to wait ’til the whole season is over to be able to see it in its entirety. Last summer I watched the seven seasons of Game of Thrones over the span of two or three weeks (I watched it at night that’s why it took so long). Mind you, I do binge-rewatching, as well 🙂

    • I never watched Game of Thrones. It has absolutely no appeal for me. The rest of my family love it though. I did binge watch Breaking Bad though. Over a couple of weeks. Binge rewatching is taking it to another level Diana! Hahahahahaha. Nice you like CS. Lots of love, Val xxxxx

  8. I really miss the times I used to wear only one fragrance for months because I was in love with it. It was in the 80s when there was no hyperproduction of perfume. I wish I could do it nowadays and I’m very happy when I find a perfume interesting enough to wear it at least one week in a row. The Hermessence line has a few lovely scents and Cedre Sambac is surely one of them.
    I never binge watch TV series. I’m more the movie fan…and I like Donald Sutherland and remember him vividly in Visconti’s XX century. He’s such a great actor!

    • I’m with you Neva. This flitting about with different scents daily, often multiple times a day were not de riguer back in the day. I would wear the same one or two fragrances for months on end. I wonder if that’S a reflection of today’s industry. Too many releases. Oftentimes short longevity. Perhaps not as complex to the extent that top, middle and basenotes have often been usurped by linearity. Of course this is a rank generalization.

    • I miss those days too!!!!! From the 1970s to the 1990s I had only 7 bottles in my fragrance wardrobe so it was not inconceivable to wear one of them for days on end. And then there were those that like you I would wear for weeks/months at a time ( vintage Prescriptives Calyx was a summer staple from 1986 to 1995)

    • Hi there Neva! Donald Sutherland is so good in Trust. Brilliant. Every single scene. I like movies too, but am quite fussy about them. Its went to see The BlackKklansman. Was AMAZING. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Everyone should see it. Those who should see it won’t though. Always the way. I like wearing the same scent a couple of days in a row ….. this was crazy though. Although I s should say I layered it with the Musc Pallida oil on at least half of those days. Stunning. 🙂 Hugs xxxxx

  9. yes I binge watch tv…while I should be exercising or meditating or knitting or cleaning the house…my lazy little body lays in bed and watches one show after the other…Mr. Marzipan complains about this all the time.

    yes I can stay with one fragrance for an extended amount of time…summer of 2016 was Assam of India (the infamous elephants) for SEVEN WEEKS STRAIGHT.

    Sadly I tried this Hermessences (along with all the other new ones and the two oils) at Saks in NYC a few months ago and it lasted a nano second on my scent devouring skin.

    • Brigitte! Hahahahahahahahahaha. THOSE elephants, back again. 🙂 Wow! The Cedar Sambac lasts at least 12 hours on my skin, as does the Agar Ebene (which I also want to buy). The oils too, they even outlast the perfumes. I never ever watch TV in bed, unless I am in a hotel, and then I keep it on permanently. Luxury. AS I said my TV bingeing is in the shop. I stand for around 8 hours on a Monday, baking up the cookies. The perfect time to put myself into a semi-coma watching telly. Bussis. xxxxx

      • I think I would pass out standing for eight hours straight! and probably eat every cookie I had baked! How do you resist it all? I am going to give the Hermessences another try on my clothes to see if I get better longevity…or maybe upwards of 12-20 sprays.

  10. Hmm, Val, I used to wear Safari for years on end. It was my true love, my daily companion. I can’t do it now. I am a perfume slut. At least 3 a day now. In a way, I wish I could love just one for a length of time. But it isn’t in me.

    I keep meaning to pop by Hermés, but I forget to. This has tempted me to be more earnest.

    • Hi Kate! My skin holds onto perfume for a really long time. Most things are a total commitment. Colud not actually wear three in one day. But sometimes I wear five or six different spritzes …..Drop into Hermès and take look. No hurry though I am sure they are not going anywhere. xxxxxx

  11. You have me curious here Val! Will have to try Credre Sambac. I have a sample of the Paprika Brazil which I got as sample from Paris airport….mmmm love it and it lasts on me.
    As for Bingewatching, I like to reward myself with it. A French six part series of NOX, set in Paris in the underground passages 3 layers of them. Of course there is a serial killer under there, it was pretty good.

    • Hi Anicasunny! Paprika Brazil is that the iris one? I did not like it at all – but that was a while ago. I have a sample somewhere, I will dig it out and try it again. OH! That sounds like a great series, I will Google it. Probably never watch it – way to lazy to actually find stuff but you never know! I like serial killer stuff ….. Lots of love, Val xxxx

  12. I love binge watching. Game of Thrones, Mad Med, Band of Brothers, West Wing, The Wire. The way you talk about Cèdre Sambac I feel about Paprika Brasil and Poivre Samarcande, so I’ll obviously need to try it at some point. Trust sounds good, I like Donald Sutherland and Hilary Swank.

    • Apart from violent, drug-lord type of stuff, I gorged myself on The Crown – appealing to my more civilized side. Fargo because yeah, more violence but also really quirky. House of Cards was truly watchable stuff, but without Kevin Spacey (who is getting killed off), I’m skeptical about the upcoming season.
      I’e never seen The Trust. You all seem to love it. Is that a Netflix thing? Portia seems to love Grimm. I’d give that one a go, but Netflix Canada doesn’t carry it ☹️
