Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

No early night..I had coffee in the late afternoon as I was afraid of falling asleep at the wheel so now I am wired!!! It is way past my bedtime-LOL! and I am sure I will pay the price tomorrow!
and I am still doing my exercises! I added a handstand against the wall and a crow pose too as they both help on upper body strength and core.

I am a stubborn….and I blame it on Cookie Queen because her post made me look for my Hermessence samples in the basement! I already found a huge love (Paprika Brasil) but with two in college and one more going next year it just isn’t in the budget! But it will go on my mental to buy list and be bought as soon as I (or Cassie) win lotto 😉 For now I have plenty of other lovelies to keep myself occupied with!

Yes. I am counting on Cassie here. You’re too tired poor Mrs. Teeny-Tiny. Last found on my ‘I really need it badly’ list: FB Musc Ravageur, full size Antique Ambergris, proper 60’s vintage Shalimar perfume. Apart from a travel size of Musc Ravageur, none of these are in my budget. Time to quit whining and enjoy what I have. I guess ☹️ Till I feel like whining again 😈

I am loving that you are loving the Ambergris which would probably smell god awful on my skin 🙂 I would agree with you on the Musc Ravageur although i sniffed it recently and was told it has been reformulated so my version might be much tamer than your version! And forget about that 60s Shalimar!

Yes, the Hermessence are quite expensive, even the smaller sizes because you have to buy three bottles. I didn’t pull the trigger so far but I’m checking on ebay. Every now and then someone is decanting them and a decant is what I would go for first.

Douce Amere on a coldish bright day. Serge and I don’t really get along. But this one is gorgeous. I think it’s one of those stupid bell jars tho. So I’ll never have more than a decant. Off to the site. Meeting with contractor and various tradesmen. Gonna play with some power tools. Should be fun. For me, not for them 🤣

Flipping cold start to the morning here, was only 5 degrees when I poked my nose out. Has warmed up a bit now though. I’m keeping the chills away with Frangipani. Had mop top done and sporting some nice red hairline streaks. Goes with my red lipstick.

Someone (I thinkmthe lovel Kate) recently suggested a trio of Mitsouko, L’Heure Bleue and Jicky all applied in equal amounts, so I just did it. So far the blue one is winning, but it smells damn good!

I’m not working at the moment, so, have the freedom to go daily–the local pool and gym is about ten minutes walk. These are just tiny recovery swims: only ten or fifteen minutes after training. It’s a nice pool though–Edinburgh’s got quite a collection of old Victorian baths which were all given a facelift in the last decade.

I know some perfumistas wear their perfumes all year round but I have always divided them into seasons depending on how the influence my body and soul. Maybe this is because of the continental climate I live in – hot summers and cold winters so there’s a huge difference in temperatures.

I have a job interview after lunch today. My go-to in these types of situations (me being nervous or in meetings or cramped spaces) is to go with a citrus fragrance. Today I selected Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Limon Verde. Wish me luck, I’m really nervous! I’m competing against much younger people and it is a pay cut/grade drop, but I think the job would be more enjoyable for me.

In late breaking news, received my sample of Aftelier Antique Ambergris. Wow. Mandy doesn’t fool around. FedEx. Three days from California to Montreal.
This is some amazing stuff! Alright the first minute or so it smells like straight up poopie on me. But wait. The ambergris blooms and what is left is as Portia described “a subtle, refined funk’ Gorgeous. Not sure if I can pull it off but it would be particularly devastating on a man. Not that it is particularly masculine, but in my filthy mind it conjours up an incredibly, irresistibly mateable (use your imagination girls! That’s not the word I wanted to use) man. The kind you don’t take home to meet your Mommy. Say no more.

But oddly enough there were numerous fragrances I wore years ago (Bal a Versailles for example) that folks describe as skanky and even some current stuff (Absolute Pour le Soir which folks say smells like panties but on my skin smelled like honey when I wore it in the summer) so I would not say that I am completely “lady like”…..

Struggling with decisions this morning I am! Changed my shoes and shirt twice! Had three little scents on trial, SMN Vaniglia, DK Cashmere Mist and Profumi Di Firenze Vaniglia del Madagascar. No luck with any of these so have gone to something I know – L’artisan Al Oudh! Even if I look like I can’t coordinate my outfit, least I’m smelling great!!
Yesterday’s highlight was Le Labo Patchouli – definitely worthy of another wear and more time for me to write properly about it. I will say though I really, really liked it 😉

Twilly read as very sweet and nothing Earth shattering. I liked the Gentiane more for it’s herbal and tomato leaf vibe… I am wearing it now and I thunked my sample. I could see Twilly being popular with mainstream perfumistas though.

Atelier Iris Rebelle. A total misnomer for this, as there’s nothing remotely rebellious about it. A nice skin scent, though. Veers ladylike (dunno why I’m wearing it in that case). i went mad and went to bed early last night, and had a full night’s sleep! So much, in fact, that i feel like I’ve got puffy sleep eyes today. Ya can’t win.

best as I can work out from the codes and address these two are from 1980–it’s a little gift box set of 30ml of EDT and 3.5ml of the parfum.

Non-vintage vintage Shalimar over Antique Ambergris in Episode One of Marcella Learns to Layer. I think this combo is providing a some guts to the gutless Shalimar I got. Probably a waste of my little smear of Ambergris though. I like it straight up best.

My package arrived!!!!!! Talk about luxury! The gorgeous box, the beautiful wrappings, the samples placed in a beautiful envelope, the handwritten note and also a surprise of the Rose Cassis in travel spray (me likey! and me also likey the Orange Blossom Petal….sadly the Pink Pepperwood sample was empty …I think Jessica forgot to fill it-LOL! but I will count on Marcella for chiming in whenever she gets around to sampling that one)….
so I guess this ends my Hermessence streak…and now you will be having to read my daily SOTD as Reglisse Noire for I plan to wear a lot of my preeeeciouuuus……..

I have your favorite Réglisse Noire, Narcotic Flowers, Rose Cassis Paradis, Ode, Orange Blossom Petal and Pink Pepper Wood. Do please review them for us. I was supposed to get all three samples of the Blue Collection but I only got two as the Pink Pepper Wood vial was empty so I am counting on you to review it for me! I am already familiar with Narcotic Flowers and I posted my response to one of your comments on another thread…If you need me to reiterate I will happily do so. Ode for Him I also adore…it reminds me of Carolina for Men with it’s beautiful spices…my middle daughter always wore Ode until she thunked it. I really should get a bottle of that one for my son…it’s that good (and then I can steal some from him). The Rose Cassis Paradis lasted the entire night ..I can still smell it on my hand and I LOVE it. would be great not only in the heat of summer but also in the dead of winter as a mood lifter. I have a travel spray of it right now so I think I will use that first before investing in a full bottle.
I am trying to be a bada$$ in my old age…maybe all of this strength training will turn me into one? LOL!

Fair to middling chance that I might like it then. I don’t get something Mrs. M, you’ve worn some pretty beast mode fragrances back in the day. I mean Rive Gauche as a tween? Opium, Poison, Giorgio BH. I don’t consider these necessarily ladylike scents…not funky but still mega watt stuff. Could you perhaps be deceiving us 🤨? Are you illicitly fragrancing your tiny self with Musc Koublai Khan and various skanky, slutty scents? Perhaps moisturizing with bacon grease rather than the essential oils you claim to enjoy? The Marzipan Mystery continues. The story is not over yet.

It’s 1000 Flowers and the perfumer was originally from Canada but now lives in Grasse, France which is where she trained and where my package came from.

Ah too bad! I would have liked to go there as well although I only made it to Paris and never to Grasse. Oh and to answer your question, I retired my pointe shoes when I was 23…which basically was a lifetime ago. When I stopped I pretty much stopped.

Neva, I too get that pinch around my heart….and the muscle memory of the body as I watch them move…I can feel and imagine again dancing as they do. When I gave up my career I wanted nothing to do with ballet anymore…I could not watch it or do it….but several years later I took a class at college and I rather enjoyed it but did not resume ballet after that one semester. I think I am so enamored with yoga because it challenges my old body in the same vein as ballet challenged my young body….if that makes any sense to you?

Yes, you described it so accurately! I know what you mean. I could watch ballet performances but every time I had tears in my eyes. I still sometimes do.
I went to contemporary dance classes some eight years ago with non professionals who were in their thirties (much younger than me) but nowadays it’s all about rolling on the floor and I didn’t enjoy it so much anymore so I gave up. I do yoga for 4 years now and the benefit is that I’m more flexible but I really miss dancing, practising a choreography.

She is a lovely artisanal perfumer that I have been enamored with since I discovered her work around 2012. Beautiful creations well worth checking out.

SOT evening: Asphalt Rainbow from Charenton Macerations. I really like their perfumes and it’s a pity they are not sold in Europe. This is an interesting take on the rose – soft and powdery mixed with a metallic note and asphalt smell. In the opening it smells like fresh pine. I’m still wondering how they managed to combine it but it’s a masterpiece and I often get complimented on it.

I feel melancholy today. I desperately wanted to wear my precious De Profundis…..I own a 10ml sample, however I cannot find it…..so I have found another sample of a scent in a similar vain. VIDI by HDP. And I’ve just ordered an 8ml spray of De Profundis via surrender to chance. I’m off to make some Christmas cards

So I wrote that down Crikey! I was clutching a little piece of paper that said “wibbly wobbly jellyfish in the ocean”. The doctor asked me what I was reading. He laughed then asked me if I was in jellyfish mode right before impaling me with a 10” syringe. I suspect he was still laughing while he did his thing. Not sure tho, I was off wibblying around in the ocean. I’ll be squatting again real soon!!

Thanks all, for your cheerleading! I have walked through the gates of hell and returned. Bloody hell, that hurt like a b**ch. Ha! But it’s over. Treating myself to a generous application of incorrect decade, but still vintage Shalimar overlaid with Antique Ambergris. Which will soon be finished 😢. Not allowed to drive for the next couple of hours, so I’ll just hang out and smell my gorgeousness. Whilst the Shalimar I received is not of the decade I would have preferred it still smells pretty darned good!

I can’t remember, but I think it was a week or 10 days….minus two days of an excruciating cortisone flare which I hope does not repeat itself. Anyhow, soon enough I won’t be gimping around and climbing stairs like I’ve never tried that new-tangled contraption. Best of all, no more waking up half a dozen times at night, lying awake for ages and swearing a blue streak. My cats will be relieved, they now swear like demented lunatics. The hub can sleep through an atomic blast. He won’t notice a difference.

I’m happy to have my little SSS family – five of them- but half afraid to wear them in case I can’t ever get any more. Luckily they’re so potent that it only takes a couple of sprays. Whatever base Laurie used is like glue on my skin, so tenacious and great sillage. Can’t say that about 90% of my other perfumes.

I received my Sedona Sweet Grass from Providence Perfumes. Natural perfume yes. Independent perfumer, don’t know. They also sent along samples of Bay Rum and Vientiane. Sweet Grass is not unimpressive. Sweet pine opening swaddled in a lovely smokey embrace. Incense? Not sure. It doesn’t smell churchy to me, more hiking outdoorsy. A campfire? Whatever, it’s a smooth, slightly sweetened smoke. Nice. Worth another go.
Vientiane is supposed to be a sandalwood, basmati rice affair. This was disappointingly sour on me. Guess I’ll try it one more time 🤷🏼♀️

Big PG fan girl here. Have Coze, Felanilla, Indochine, Aomassai, Sucre d’Ebene and a few others. I haven’t pulled them out yet, but will soon. His stuff is still very reasonably priced, the 50 ml bottles are just right. I order straight from Paris. Incredibly quick. OTT packaging and presentation. Mostly black, chic white accenting. And they send loads of very generously sized samples. Plus Pierre (as I call him 😉) is a very tasty morsel. Google him. You will not be left wanting!

Today I passed by a shop carrying Diptyque fragrances and finally came to try Fleur de Peau that everybody seems to like a lot. It’s a very pleasing soft skin scent, clean and a bit soapy. But then the SA pulled out another new scent – Tempo – and I was stunned! It’s actually a patchouli scent and I like patchouli only in vintage perfumes in the drydown. Well, this one opens with a soft, refined patchouli so it immediately feels vintage. Huge like! After the fresh opening it smells like humid, maybe even rotten, leaves and then it gets slightly bitter and the drydown is deep and woody. I think it will be nice to smell traces of it on a scarf or pullover in the wintertime. And I think I need it 😀

do you like patchouli e.o.? I love it. I once spend an entire Autumn wearing nothing but patchouli diluted in sweet almond oil (which is actually an unscented carrier oil) slathered all over my body…I applied it every morning from head to toe…my clothes reeked of it…and I Loved it. Hundreds of years ago patchouli leaves were packed with clothes to ward off moths and other critters that might eat the clothes. Then folks realized how good their clothes smelled. This is what my clothes were like….saturated in the scent of patchouli.

I’m not sure Brigitte. I remember the patchouli scent that hippies used to wear in the seventies and it was rather harsh and strong. I guess it’s not what you meant. I love chypres so as a part of the whole package I like it because it gives a certain depth to a perfume but I’m not really fond of patchouli dominated perfumes. Tempo was a very nice surprise though.
Where did you buy your patchouli? Was it an oil? I’m curious how it smells…

Yes I buy patchouli essential oil…I used to buy patchouli dark from Eden Botanicals..if you let the oil age for years it gets very mellow and not as harsh as you remember. Also, if you dilute in a carrier oil it tones down the harshness. But it is part of the mint family so it has a minty aspect to it but it also has cocoa and chocolate facets which is what I get with my skin chemistry. You can also get less expensive patchouli essential oils such as NOW Essentials which is what I have hiding in my basement on my e.o. shelf. See if you can find it in a health food store and give it a try again.

Neva- A carrier oil is an unscented oil which “dilutes” the essential oil (technically you are not supposed to apply an essential oil straight up onto your skin ,however, I do all the time and have never had a reaction but that is the recommendation). Examples of unscented carrier oils would be things like jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, unfractionated coconut oil, apricot kernel oil, sesame seed oil…..usually you add the essential oil to a carrier oil and use that blend. If you blend patchouli in a carrier oil the scent becomes “tamer” and is more powdery and less earthy. I will put essential oils into carrier oils when I want to wear the scent all over my body. I also use carrier oils alone as an all over unscented moisturizer for my very dry skin. It helps any fragrance you are wearing to better stick to your skin too.

Hey Mrs. Marzipan, I’m down here. So yeah. Trying Pink Pepper Wood. Opens a really clean, gentle pepper. Not at all sneezy or harsh. Pepper is quickly joined by juniper. Fresh with no sweetness. To me it smells like the cleanest, brightest summer woods ever. It’s ultra clean but not at all soapy. Very refreshing. It would be great on some of those hot, humid swampy days we had last summer. Not particularly ladylike, but certainly not masculine. The cedar is low key and simply adds to the overall fresh outdoorsy feel. It smells like hiking on a cool, bright early summer day. Jessica’s perfumes are really well done. No doubt about it. I hope day two of REGLISSE NOIRE was every bit as good as day one. We’re counting on you to do a masterful run on this one. No cheating allowed. No running to the basement for a hit of Hermessence. All we want to hear is REGLISSE NOIRE!!!!!! for the next month. You will be our stubborn hero!

Oh MY gawd!!!!! Now I am so annoyed that Jessica forgot to fill that empty vial of Pink Pepper wood for me cause i need to get my nose on it!( I know it did not evaporate because when I opened it I smelled nothing)…I love juniper and I do also love masculine scents (hell, I wore Grey Flannel when I had an office job in Manhattan at the age of 18)….thank you for this review…I am going to get my mitts on it. I might go for the Orange Blossom Petal for a Christmas present to myself in preparation for a spring scent. Then for my birthday get a bottle of Rose Cassis Paradis in preparation for summer…and amongst those two “gifts” will either be a sample or travel spray of Pink Pepper Wood…I do enjoy juniper and wood notes so I think this would be right up my alley.
I have been wearing the heck out of my Reglisse..shamefully reapplying throughout the day…got a few more compliments today as well…I think it works on my skin…it’s a gourmand but it’s not overly sweet. Portia did an excellent review of it on Perfume Posse. I will see if I can link it. I will definitely stick with it for a while…maybe yes to a month….cause you know I am a stubborn Taurean 😉
Thanks for testing out Narcotic Flower too. I will have to get my hands on a sample of that as well when I get future full bottles. I had the old version but I am curious about the new one.

I think I am in trouble because a perfumista friend (no not the one that likes aquatic marine notes) heard that I was collecting mini perfume bottles (my intent is to divide up the christmas ornaments into threes for the mini marzipans this year and pack them away and then turn what I have of mini perfume bottles into Christmas ornaments by tying ribbons around them). So she offered to send me her neglected minis which I assumed would be just about empty….NO! they are full or almost full!!! Plus she also sent me a few samples too!!! in that loot were two that look and smell vintage….Femme and Dioressence…one whiff of the Dioressence and I was instantly transplanted back to childhood…. there is also Elle L’aime (Lolita Lempicka..never heard of this one but the mini bottle is gorgeous!!! I will have to wear these at night to continue with my Reglisse during the day! The perfume Gods are surely looking out for me!

LOL! funny thing is I had written on another blog that I was saving my minis for Christmas decorations and she offered me her “empties”. so we corresponded and it turns out she was visiting in the States for a short period and wanted to mail them from the States to avoid all the wacky postal regulations. They just came in tonight and I was shocked to see most of the minis full. I am forever extraordinarily grateful for the kindness of perfumistas. And this also means that I need to keep telling Portia to not enter me so that others can be blessed by the perfume gods.

The Elle by the way smells exactly like vintage Coty Sand and Sable…lordy that was a good but cheapy!
Anyone remember that one? Beachy vibe and gardenia to my nose. I must have thunked three bottles of it back in the day.

I’ve never heard of this Coty but it seems great. Portia did mention Elle l’aime a few weeks ago in the SOTD thread. I’m gonna need to try either one, or both. Not now, though, I’ve got way too many samples on my hands now 🙂 (None of my friends loves perfumes as much as I do, but eventually these little guys will find their way to someone else).

Diana- Don’t know what current Sand and Sable smells like but vintage was fantastic ..and it was a drugstore perfume so it was extraordinarily inexpensive! Wish we all lived near each other so that we could share all of our loot in person!

mOst of the ornaments were made with their photos in them…I started this 17 years ago…so when they each have their own tree they will see the trajectory of their growth year to year. It’s actually kind of cool as they get a kick out of it even now…looking at how tiny they were. I decided that last year was the last year to make an ornament as they are pretty much all grown now.
I am excited about my project and right now all the minis I have collected are sitting in the basement in a box.

What a fantastic idea with minis as Christmas ornaments! I love it! It will surely look amazing on a Christmas tree or a huge wreath. How to describe this one? Well for a start it’s from the 80s, so it’s not shy or retiring. A well rounded, well blended floral, lightly spiced. that’s rich but not overpowering. The carnation blooms well on my skin. I prefer this in the cooler weather as it would be a tad suffocating in the heat. It leans oriental and is very bosomy. If you can, try the original in the blue disc shaped bottle, there’s a new bottle that’s probably reformulated beyond recognition.

today I gave Le Labo Patchouli 24 another spin. The initial blast is full on! It’s big smoke. It’s tyres. It’s just plain smack in your face – well on my skin it is! I did do a quite few sprays so the smoke lasted for more than an hour. What I was looking for was the amazing dry down I got the other night I wore it but today it’s not giving that same feel. Maybe I put too much on or maybe it depends on the temperature. I’ve got half my sample left so there’s enough for another try. Maybe today was a bit cool for it. There’s a few others in the pack – Bergamote 22 was another highlight. And, I’m giving Oud 27 another go right now. Last time I wore it it was not nice, first thought was cow poo! Tonight it’s better and much more wearable (cedar, musk, something sweet) so maybe it depends on temperature?

Wow that sounds potent! I have heard good things about Bergamote 22. I think I have been unconsciously boycotting Le Labo because the SAs in Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC completely avoided me the three times I made the trip in over the years when I went up to the counter. I guess I did not fit the profile of a full bottle purchaser. That snobbery was a real turn off. I am glad that you are enjoying them, though and I look forward to hearing more of what you sample 🙂

I was not dressed for the part…I had a two hour train ride into the city so I was wearing leggings , sneakers and had a backpack…this is my usual garb for perfume sniffing trips into Manhattan…so my tiny self did not look like someone who could afford Le Labo I guess.

Santal 33 is the only Le Labo I’ve tried and I really liked its dryness. I have no idea about their price range because they are not available around here. I’d like to try some more only to be able to comment them.

Brigitte, have you tried passion flower, valerian, lavender oil (supplement, not the EO) or melissa? Melatonin may have some hazardous effects on people’s health, but maybe these herbs could help you have a healthier sleep.

OK, I got a bit swamped with work and autumnal procrastination, so here’s my wee report: Eau Premiere was my yesterday’s choice, and it was as beautiful as ever. Today it’s Rose Poivree by TDC and some Aura on the wrist. I don’t think Aura (edp) will make it to my full-bottle list. It’s an interesting scent, just not my type, although the drydown is really nice.

Hey Crikey, you smell wonderful today! I like B. Fazzolari’s Au Dela but haven’t tried the Narcisse version. Au Dela has a retro vibe and I’m a fan of it. Civet is a masterpiece, it feels very comforting and sophisticated.

Nope. He’s got a new one coming out soon–a vetiver–and I think some people have tried it. But not me, not yet. ADN is LOVELY though–a twisty classical chypre with a rich dollop of narcissus in there. yum!

Today in Australia it the AFL Grand Final. It is the equivalent of America’s Super Bowl. I will be very busy at work because many of the elderly will be wanting to watch the game, and then as soon as it finishes 30 ppl will need assistance to go to bed!! I’m torn atm as to which scent to wear today…another big bold bomb ,or a soft barely there. I shall decide just before I go to work.

Nope , haven’t fallen asleep….I have been up since 1am. Now it’s almost 5am so I am testing before I shower….I think I am wearing Molecule 4 on the left wrist ( I smell grapefruit) and 1000 Flowers Orange Blossom Petal on the right wrist (still love it but I think I may go for a travel spray instead whenever I get around to ordering again…she also has an all natural lavender spray cologne made with organic alcohol which looks really good! this is what happens when you are up at the crack of dawn! you look at perfume sites and get new lemmings!) I will get off the computer and do some knitting as that is always relaxing for me.

You don’t have to buy immediately. Just put it on your list and in the morning it may not feel so important…look who’s talking. I always do my perfume shopping online late at night when I think everyone except me is asleep and won’t notice the bargain, LOL.

I made a vow to myself with two in college and one more going next year that I was going to be frugal with my non essential purchases…and here I went buying two new full bottles very recently! So I need a voice of reason to talk me off the ledge …for now I can “shop” in my basement 🙂
I have very rudimentary knitting skills so I am working on hats and scarves for the mini Marzipans to gift to their friends…much more cost effective and also has a nice personal touch…plus, I find knitting to be very meditative and a form of therapy!

Knitting is wonderfully calming and yes, meditative.I remember I used to talk to myself for hours while I was knitting in my room. It felt so good 🙂 My grandmothers were experts and they taught me to knit when I was very young. I’ve knitted really beautiful pullovers, scarves, bags and all sorts of things but that was thirty years ago. I don’t know why I’ve stopped, probably just life coming in between…

Some comments make me crave for new perfumes, yours often make me crave EOs! I got my stash of citrus oils, ylang-ylang, lavender and a few others to brighten up the room but you have some seriously good stuff there. Hope myrrh helped you have a good night’s sleep. Did you try to take lavender oil in veggie cups? I bought some from iHerb, the effect was pretty good.

I’ve only tried Nawab of Oudh and it was a suggestion from the SA because she knows I like woody scents. I remember that I liked it a lot and was considering a FB but then I went for OJ Woman.

Musc Infini by Ex Nihilo. I liked it last summer but now it seems a bit too sweet for my taste. So far the nicest musc for me has been Clair de Musc by Lutens but there are so many I haven’t tried (and probably shouldn’t 🙂 ).

Missed you all! Wow! Hate it when work/life gets in the way of my playtime here. I worked straight through the night Friday preparing revised drawings for the reno job. Issued said drawings on Saturday morning followed by hours of tense meetings with contractor and structural engineer 😬 Everything is sorted now and I’m happy to return to my regularly scheduled, vastly more important activities…yapping with y’all.

I can still smell the myrrh on my bathrobe from yesterday morning…this is sublime.
Last night I made a blend for my friend…myrrh, frankincense, rose, lavender, sandalwood and my homemade vanilla bean oil. I am sending it to her for her birthday. Like me she enjoys wearing essential oils in the evening to help her relax (another fellow insomniac)
Today I will go for more lashings of Reglisse Noire…would you believe a fifth of my bottle is already done?

That oil must be amazing. The only thing that could improve it for me would be the absence of the lavender. We have a complicated relationship, it sometimes makes me cry. Ha, what I mean is that it stings my eyes and makes them water, though not always.

G’day all. To Jyotsna…I have a love / hate relationship with RDK I don’t need a bottle. Work was ridiculously busy on Sunday evening. I’m so pleased I now have a couple days off. I plan on getting in my garden and doing some weeding. After my post work shower, I have applied Samsara to soothe my soul,and I’ll be taking a hot pack to give ‘warmth’ to my knotted tummy.

Cassie. I’m sooo glad to hear that the coffee e.o. has slimmed your thighs! Isn’t it amazing how that stuff really works? I’ll let you in on an anti-ageing ‘secret’, altho I’m sure you aren’t needing that yet. Before bed, warm up some bacon grease, not too much, a tbsp should do. Add just a bit of dog hair and an equal part of belly button lint. Stir gently. Massage into your face using circular motions. It is amazing!! Wrinkles, dark pigmentation, under eye circles, sun damage, uneven skin tone, dryness, oiliness will all be gone. Your skin will be returned to it’s youthful radiance. And even better….you will have that special ‘lit from within glow’ that every woman will envy. I couldn’t be more thrilled with this. I literally looked 25 years younger when I woke up. Haha, we’re all over the place. Have you ever used coffee eo? It’s so fabulous. I just mix with carrier oil to use. I could lick myself when I use it. It’s (supposedly) good for cellulite busting and tissue drainage. And of COURSE I’ve got sleek and toned thighs from using it😂

on the sleep thing, I had decent results with zinc and magnesium supplements, 5-HTP, and Theanine (the latter really only if the trouble is falling asleep, as it helps the relaxation and quieting process).

easy peasy…..get one or two vanilla beans…slice horizontally and drop in a carrier oil…I usually use about 2 beans to 8-16 oz of carrier oil …then I let it marinate and shake several times a week for several weeks to several months before using (the longer it marinates the stronger the vanilla scent) I came up with this idea/experiment when vanilla e.o. started to become ridiculously expensive and then completely out of stock at Eden Botanicals. So now I make my own and it smells divine. You can actually see the brown flecks of vanilla bean in the oil.

Sounds good. I’ve got to get busy and order some e.o.’s instead of just talking about it. Tbh, I’m kind of intimidated. All this talk of carrier oils…complicated stuff. No idea about mixing ratios or anything. And I can’t decide which ones to get. Myrrh sounds great tho. I want to make something yummy and cozy. No citrus, no flowers. Do you have any suggestions? Could I put myrrh into home-made vanilla bean oil? That sounds good. And then does all that have to go into a carrier oil? So confusing 😫

Yes you could definitely put myrrh with the vanilla bean blend which is already made with a carrier oil so you don’t need to add more- just add the myrrh. Or just decide on what note/e.o you want to “play” with and then just experiment. If you think you like vanilla for the cozy then go for that (2 beans to 8oz of carrier oil). Don’t be intimidated. I have been playing with this stuff for about seven years and you really can’t go wrong. I don’t keep recipes and I don’t do ratios. I eyeball everything and just smell it.

Yep, warm amber. Opens with bitter orange which calms down pretty quickly. There’s a good pinch of cinnamon in there. A very warm and cuddly fragrance, a bit powdery. It’s an edt but don’t let that fool ya, it’s got great projection and longevity – very important to me that I leave a chemtrail😷

And speaking of sexy……tested Ode for Him (1000 Flowers) yesterday. What a ride! I loved it. The fact that it reminded me of the scent worn by an extremely lust-provoking man I worked with in my early 20’s may have had something to do with it. I have tried to figure out what it could be. This would have been a mid-late 70’s men’s cologne.
Hope you’re paying attention here Mrs. Marzipan!! Sadly, my nose is not smart enough to pick out the individual notes. Also, in my nose’s defence, Ode is very well blended. And it’s also great. And very sexy in a non-sleazeball way. Not sure I would wear it as it is verrry masculine and virile but guaranteed I will trying it. From time to time. So that I can remember how it felt to be 22 and in lust 😏

When I first smelled it I thought of Carolina Herrera for Men…it came in a box with dots on it. There was an American commercial where two women were conversing about how good a man smells and one told the other “the fragrance that comes in the box with dots”. There are lots of spices in Ode (cardamom, coriander ) along with oud but it is so well blended. As I said before my middle child (female) shared the bottle with her brother because they both loved it. And I wore it as well until the bottle was no more.I love how this one awoke your 20ish year old lustful self 🙂 Love when perfume triggers good memories!!!!

And so. Trying Narcotic Flowers for a second time. At the risk of raising Mrs. Marzipan’s considerable wrath (remember now, she’s a flexible, man push up doing mini terror these days) umm….ya…well I am not a fan? Hope that was diplomatic enough. Honestly, it smells like a really really old, stale bouquet along with some of the rank vase water mixed in. But that’s on me and I lack the magical skin gene. A slightly rotten, fetid mass. Very muddy. Quite the contrast to Jessica’s other offerings which are beautifully done if not to my taste.
I’m outta here. Going to hide now.

marcella I love your honesty…and you always make me laugh! Narcotic Flower was the first fragrance Jessica ever made but never sold…she started out wanting to only make naturals (which is what Narcotic Flowers is, an all natural fragrance) but then she segued into mixed media and her first offering was Reglisse Noire which was a huge success. I think a high quality and wearable natural is not an easy feat.How you described Narcotic Flowers (old stale bouquet with rank vase water) is how many of the Afteliers wear on my skin…they just don’t work….SSS was by far the best in making all naturals imho. But getting back to Narcotic Flowers the original that I had from about 4 or 5 years ago I remember being a huge tuberose and reminded me quite a bit of the original Karl Lagerfeld Chloe (from the 1970s…also a tuberose bomb). If I had to choose in which one I prefer it would probably be the Chloe. I am grateful for your review because now I don’t feel a pressing urge to immediately get my hands on Narcotic Flowers. For now I can be happy with my Reglisse (which I am draining at an alarming speed) and Rose Cassis Paradis.

I used to wear Chloe lots in the 70’s. It was lush. And I can tell you 100% certain that Narcotic Flower does not resemble Chloe. Not one iota. Rose Cassis Paradis is one I could see growing on me over time tho.

y’all are so funny.. but what can I say??? I have been tiny my whole life! My mother kept telling me I would get “fat” like her for every milestone birthday (30, 40, 50) but it never happened-LOL! I was only 32 lbs when I started kindergarten and 78 lbs when I started high school…and I have been eating like a horse for my entire life!!! I kid you not!!! Does anyone remember that commercial with Kelly LeBrock where she says “don’t hate me because I am beautiful”??? my mantra has always been “don’t hate me because I am thin” !!!!

Not that lofty Jyotsna, interior designer. With some mad CAD skills. Unlike an architect, I can only bash out the interior of a house. Technically I am not supposed to do work on the exterior envelope but I can still design doors where none existed and stuff like that. I certainly cannot design new buildings, but Bob’s your uncle when it comes to interiors. Reconfigure the stair case? Yup. Gut the kitchen? Sure. Turn two rooms into one? I’ll wave my magic wand. Also not allowed to plan any additions/extensions on existing constructions. I think my clients are pleased only cuz I smell so damn good!!!

Cassie, for the record I do NOT do brown. Just no. I expect you to be too busy polishing the genie lamp to have any opinions whatsoever. In exchange for your lack of input, I will design a perfume cupboard that will be the envy of all. Temperature controlled. Sleek dividers. Transparent pull-out drawers. All sorts of sizes. It will be magnificent and win me a couple of design awards along the way. I will become famous. I will work for only the most discerning, wealthy and refined clients. I will be on the cover of Architectural Digest. Royalty will request me. I will make them wait, just because I can. And all you have to do is keep it zipped Cassie 🤐. Just don’t argue, suggest, ask, comment or otherwise interfere. I know better. I will take you with me while I’m jet setting around the world, fêted by all and sundry. You will enjoy carrying my bags. Just keep mum.

Okay, I expect I’ve annoyed pretty much everybody enough by now. So I’ll talk perfume. Last spring I thought I should teach my nose oud. I ordered a sample of The Oud Affair, as one does in these cases. Small but satisfied reviews were researched. One hesitant spray almost threw me into the wall. I think I got a concussion. This stuff is ungawdly strong. Super pushy. Very aggressive. After the disgusted look I gave it it’s now cowering in the back of my perfume cupboard. Resigned to purgatory. Question. Do I try it again? Does my nose really ‘need’ to learn oud? I’m scared of it. Do you suppose it’s just a rubbish oud? Are there better/nicer ouds out there? Does anybody really like oud? Or will liking it make me part of the cool crowd? Maybe I should stay in my lane and just ignore oud. Need advice please. I’m okay with being part of the cool crowd tho.

The JHAG… Another Oud, is the name… I haven’t sampled it yet..it is in my discovery set. Today is a glorious Spring day….so glorious that I’m going to be Undina’s scent twin. Yes 3 sprays of Bronze Goddess. And I’ve got the ‘spending itch’…oops… I might be in ‘trouble’ lol

Montale! What’s up with that? Oud all day, every day. Something about that line irritates me. The bottles are atrocious for starters. They’re like a one trick pony racing around the oud track. I just don’t get it I guess. I’ll have a peek at the JHAG. Still scared of the oud monster tho 👀

Ha, did my comment get lost? It’s probably floating somewhere over Outer Mongolia. I’ve got Jasmine Full and Intense Tiaré. They’re real powerhouses. No problem with sillage or longevity here.

I say try it again. BTW, there is oud in Ode. And finally, get your hands on the real stuff (agarwood) before you decide you do or don’t like oud. I wasn’t crazy about oud until I tried the real oil (versus the synthetics in mainstream perfumery). I am agreeing with you on the Montale bottles…they are odd birds but they do prevent light from hitting the fragrance and that little attachment at the top makes an interesting clinking noise every time you move the bottle. I thunked two Montales not that long ago and they were not ouds so do explore the line. They are also powerhouses, even on my scent devouring skin.

and Marcella- Goldfield and Banks Wood Infusion was featured in one of the youtube videos I watched last night and i thought of you because there is oud in it….I thunked a decant of that not too long.. it’s a fantastic citrus/woody scent from an Australian brand that Portia has posted about. You might like it.

Montales, eh? Cute little clinking noises. Powerhouse. All very compelling reasons. But somehow those bottles look sooo cheap to me. So I immediately make the association the the fragrances will smell cheap and tacky as well. Still not sold. Maybe if there weren’t so many other lines that I am wanting to try.
Agarwood oil. An essential oil? This is a great idea. Smell it in isolation, not all gussied up. That’s a genius idea!!!

To reply to Marcella, and Jyotsna… Sweet Oriental Dream is delicious. Yes it is powdery. In similar vain to a scent like Caron’s Parfum Sacre. Some might find it sugary sweet, but I don’t. It gets me through melancholy days.

Marcella, in my opinion oud was no improvement for the perfume industry. In other words: I don’t like oud based perfumes and I ignore everything that says oud. The truth is, many perfumes that have the word oud in their name aren’t necessarily heavy on it. I only think that there are soooooo many other perfumes I could love and I don’t feel the need to explore ouds. But you’ll do as you please, of course 🙂

Miracle Monday! Walked to the bathroom WITHOUT LIMPING! Was able to sleep on the lousy hip side! I’m thinking of layering 😲 a bit of Rose Cassis Paradis over Eau Duelle. I’m a shy layerer. I figure if a respected perfumer has gone to the trouble of creating a beautiful fragrance then who am I to decide that I can make it better. I feel rude when I do it. However, I really really like RCP, it’s just missing a little something for me. A little base? A bit of richness? I thought the dry vanilla of Eau Duelle might expand the RCP. We’ll see.
So layering. Is this a thing? Like loving oud? Have any of you tried it? Do I need to haul myself out of my 70’s ancient-ness and get with it? I feel like such a Neanderthal.

Where has everyone gone? I’ve had a busy week, doing ‘nothing’ really, except tending to my sick husband….not quite the man flu because I stuffed him full of vitamins and a ‘proper’ diet. He is still claiming ‘woe is me’ lol

It is intriguing that we associate people with wearing different scents… When I think of you ,the 4 scents which come to mind are the ‘proper’ vintage Miss Dior, Shalimar, Liberte and Nikki st Phalle. There are others which escape my mind just now. Anyhoo…. I’m wearing Madness today ,because that is how work will be later today.
