Hello Fellow Fumies,

At APJ we have a Saturday Question. Everyone gets to chime in with an answer, chat with other responders and it’s a fun event each week. Taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

The idea is you’ll see it on the weekend or chime in through the week. Hopefully you will come back regularly and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them. The aim is to generate real conversation and connection even though we are scattered around the globe.

Saturday Question: What Is Your Everyday Scent?

What is your staple? Your Go-To? A spritz and go perfume that seems to work effortlessly every time. The one you wear when the day’s going to be wash, rinse, repeat. Maybe it’s your office scent, around the house favourite, cheap and cheerful, go through a bottle annually, favourite. What are you most likely to spritz for routine life.

My Answer:

I feel like this question doesn’t really fit my life, which makes it even more interesting to read what you all say. I don’t have an office job. My very loose routine is rarely within confined spaces at all. Yes, I have a bunch of favourite perfumes that get more wear than the others but that isn’t because they are everyday. The fact that they are stridently NOT everyday his what makes them popular choices for me.

So I can talk about a couple that have hit the forefront of my heavy rotation tray lately.

Granville by Dior Prive is a modern cologne that has all the cool and zesty bells and whistles. Iy’s excellent longevity also makes it a good choice for going about my day.

Kiehl’s Original Musk has been getting a few outings because I’m using up my Annick Goutal Musc Nomade shower gel. It’s the perfect sweet, caramel musks overlay and smells wonderful to me all day, even into the evening of wear.

Equipage Geranium by Hermès is so damn wearable. That nose ticklingly good opening. A very unusual spice and soapy heart with the soft focus woodsy dry down. It fits in everywhere and never makes a poor showing.

  2. Kiehl’s Musk is so wonderful! And Granville is a great call for hot weather; super elegant and understated. I need to try Equipage Geranium now-Hermes can do no wrong.

    For me, right now it’s all about iris. So I’ve been circulating The Different Company’s Sel de Vetiver (sea salt driftwood, vetiver, and creamy iris), Prada Infusion d’Iris for better-behaved days, and Etat Libre d’Orange La Fin du Monde for days when I’m all exhausted from the news and need to just bask in buttery iris and popcorn-very much a comfort scent.

    Any other irises I have to try???

  3. Chanel No. 22 EDT is the perfect office scent for me. Rich enough to make me happy, polite enough to sit through meetings.

  4. I sadly don’t have an everyday scent, which I often wish I did. Something so comfortable and “me” that I could routinely effortlessly spritz and find comfort in would be wonderful. My problem is that I love so many fragrances for different reasons/seasons/occasions, I could never choose one as an everyday scent. I have fragrances that get wear marginally more often than others. These include Molinard Habanita, Chanel No 5, Chanel Coromandel, Chanel Bois des Iles, Papillon Salome, Parfum D’Empire Ambre Russe, and Amouage Fate.

  6. It is never the same one day to the next. Recently Cuir Beluga for work, Laudano Nero for shopping, and Swiss Arabian oil when I feel self indulgent, um, quite often! Hard question!

  7. No two work days or nights are ever quite the same so my perfume wearing follows that non pattern. I wear whatever I like, whenever I like. I don’t work in close quarters with anyone else so a space-filler perfume is not out of bounds.

  8. I think y’all know my answer already…that highly addictive black licorice number that I have almost half drained a full bottle of in less than two weeks….1000 Flowers Reglisse Noire.

    Also in the lineup would be Nocturnes de Caron and Gap Heaven and as of late SSS Incense Pure and for the upcoming cold weather Winter Woods.

  9. Like others posted above, my days follow no predictable pattern. Most days will see me in the gym, however. If I think discretion is called for, however, my go-to’s are amongst Eau de Merveille, Infusion d’Iris, Un Jardin Sur Le Nil and Ligne St Barth Vanille West Indies Parfum.
    I find all of them to be serviceable (a rather perjorative term for a perfume, I suppose) and unlikely to spook the horses.

  10. I don’t have an everyday perfume – I rarely wear the same thing more than once a week! That said, some go-tos, depending on season: SSS Champagne des Bois and Fig Tree; PdN Fig-Tea; Si Lolita; Tauer L’Eau. I find that I can easily wear all of these regardless of the day’s activities.

  11. I try to mix it up during the week, but if I had an everyday scent for spring/summer it would be JM Basil and Neroli, so simple and refreshing, and for fall/winter it would be VC & A Bois d’Iris, for comfort. Strange that I just picked 2 fragrances that I don’t even own bottles of.

  14. Even though I do have an office job, this question isn’t for me either since I almost never wear the same perfume twice even in the same month. So most of my perfumes that are not designed by me as “special occasion perfume” belong to the “everyday perfumes” category. This week, for example, I wore Chanel 1932, Yves Rocher Nature, Aedes … the carnation one, can’t spell it before coffee and vintage Miss Dior cologne. But I’m not sure when I’ll wear any of them the next time (well, Miss Dior will probably make her appearance within a month or two but the rest…). So, most of my collection is my everyday scent.

  16. I really miss those days when I had my perfume and wore it until I finished the bottle. Sometimes I even immediately repurchased it. Back then I was really in love with a single perfume at a time.
    Nowadays, well you all know how the story goes…constant changing. To answer the question – I like green perfumes so there are a few perfumes that I could wear every day for all occasions and I’d feel perfectly “dressed”: Clinique Wrappings, Weekend PdN, Hermes Sur Le Nil.

  17. My all time “go to” fragrance is Origins Ginger essence. Always works for me. And my go to gourmand is Guerlain SDV or Jo Malone Blue agava & cacao.

    Once upon a time, a long time ago, I was a serial monogamist with perfumes. These days? Not so much.

    I don’t have any I save for special occasions, though like others of you, there some I avoid if I’m going to be on a plane or stuck in a small room. There are a handful that get worn more than others, absolutely. This year it’s been Aeon 001, MEM, Rozy VdP, Dryad, No.19, Miss Dior, Encens Mythique. And now the temperature is falling… well, hello Madame Mitzah.

  19. Strangely, I have been going crazy for Chanel’s Beige edt. I scored a used bottle with a bit left for absolute peanuts, so it was a blindish buy. I hate frangipani, so was happy to pass it on if it was gross. But… I ADORE IT. I gave been faithful to it for 4 days now and am scouring the internet for a full bottle that won’t cost me an airline ticket to Europe.

    Generally, I wear whatever and rarely wear anything twice in a row, or all day.

  20. For me Prada Amber and Gingembre from Roger & Gallet hands down 👍🏻 I’m really curious about Kiehl’s Original Musk since i heard a lot of nice things about it ✌🏻

  21. Hands down Shalimar Cologne edt is my winner everyday work scent at the moment. Just bought a big back up from fragrancenet as it seems to be harder to find. I’m a midwife so work very closely with other humans so I spritz lightly. I come home and spritz Coromandel edt heavily!

  22. I’ve been wearing Grey Flannel a lot recently as I find it doesn’t exacerbate my nausea (sorry if that’s tmi). Jacomo Silences, Chanel Cristalle Eau Verte, and No 19 are also good in this respect.

    • Oh, a lot of green beauties 🙂 I love your choice lena. I’m curious about Grey Flannel nowadays. I only know the eighties version of which I had a FB back then.

      • ah, thank you so much. you know the funny thing, I smelled eau sauvage extreme first because my dad had it and my mom loved it so much she would wear it herself, too, back in the 90s. I only smelled eau sauvage after coming to US in 2000s and fell in love with it. i may say both eau sauvage and eau sauvage extreme (vintage) will always be in my collection. I dont touch the current versions of eau sauvage or extreme which both have been ruined significantly.

        • Oh Fazal- that’s a lovely story! My mum sometimes wore herself too!! My dad didn’t use any fragrance. He just used cinthol or santoor soap (common where I come from). Memories!

          So sad to hear the new versions have been ruined.

  24. I wear scent most days but recently I have been enjoying the lighter ones as it starts to warm up in Queensland. Current favourites are Amande Honorable, Narciso Poudree, La Vierge de Fer, Rose Privee, Royal Sovereign by Christopher Hanlon and La Tulipe.

  25. I rarely wear the same fragrance for two days in a row unless it’s a new acquisition or when I’m considering a purchase. However, there are two perfumes that never ever fail me: whenever in doubt, I wear Shalimar and Miss Dior. They always fit my mood or make it better. The other contenders are any iris- or incense-centric perfumes, and sometimes vetiver gets into rotation (Guerlain, Palais Jamais by Etro).

    • I agree with the Shalimar. It always works. Every single time. The Miss Dior you wear, is that current or vintage? I wore it frequently in the 80’s and since I’m still maybe considering vintage Shalimar hunting, I’m more inclined to pursue the current Miss Dior formulation. Getting a good vintage is a right royal pain in the butt. Bloody expensive to boot.

      • My Miss Dior bottles are vintage, as well, Marcella, mostly from the 80-es but I also have a bottle of Miss Dior Originale made in 2014. It’s different, of course, but it bears a resemblance to the perfume it once was. Vintage Miss is still available on eBay, and far less expensive than vintage Guerlain (unless you want extrait because that one is never cheap), just be careful with splash bottles: even if the juice is authentic, it may turn.

          • A generous seller sent me a vial of the vintage extrait along with a bottle of eau de cologne (a houndstooth bottle, a splash one! I break my own rules 🙂 ). It’s amazing, of course, but I prefer to pay for a big bottle of edt/edc instead of getting a tiny bottle of extrait. Call me greedy if you dare!

          • Good luck! And one more piece of advice: look for clean looking bottles (it usually means that it’s been stored properly) and listen to your heart. I mean it: sometimes you just look at a bottle or read the description, and a little voice in your head says: “Don’t buy it”. If after an argument with your Jiminy Cricket or whatever this is you still want to take a chance, get the bottle, just don’t get your hopes up.

  26. I rarely wear the same thing even for the whole day! This summer I wore a lot of Capri and Mito though and now that fall is coming here Hendley Rosenthal is out and Suede de Suede. And L’Attesa and Iris Cendre are good anytime. I came to perfume recently and alas don’t know te vintage classics🙁.

    I habitually reach for Guerlains when I can’t think what to wear. Eau de Guerlain, Apres L’Ondee, Jardins de Bagatelle, and Vol de Nuit are easy choices with a wide variety of notes.

  28. The last 3-4 years I have really used a variety of perfume. Among the ones I own in FB Guerlain AA Pamplelune is the most obvious to call an everyday scent. Bulgari Mon Jasmine Noir has always been much used at the office. In the colder months or when I need a calming scent SL Five o’clock au Gingembre and L’Ambre des Merveilles are typical choices.

    A hard question this week! i guess I try to give most of my scents some skin time.
