Loving Leather

Hello fellow perfume lovers.

Fall is a time when the mornings are cool, almost cold, but the days can still get really warm, sometimes hot. I have the darndest of times figuring out what to wear. My best bet is to layer up and peel the layers off as the days get warm.

Loving Leather

The days are quite a bit shorter now and the sun is hanging so low in the sky that it can be blinding. But glorious sunny days with crystal blue skies have been blessing us as of late. It is so unusual to be able to walk around in a t-shirt and sandals at the beginning of October. I am lapping it up as long as I can, sitting in the sunshine and loving every moment. I have been going on many walks in nature lately. It is something different to the daily school grind.

Not only do I find it challenging to dress for the day but my perfume choices seem to take longer in the mornings. I am forever checking the weather forecast, telling myself that I am just making sure that the weather gods will behave for one more day. There is one genre of perfume that is getting quite a bit of wear these days. Leather!

Leather is the perfect choice. Leather has a slight spicy aspect to it. It can be dry, dusty, woody or slightly sweet. Sometimes the leather is kissed by florals which are reminiscent of summer days not so long ago. More often than not the leather can have feminine and masculine aspects.

My absolute favorites this autumn so far have been the following.

Cuir Cannage by Christian Dior

Dior lists the notes for Cuir Cannage as leather accord, orange blossom, rose, jasmine, iris, ylang-ylang, birch and cade.

This is my easy day to day floral leather perfume which makes me ready for the day. I love that this can be worn by my husband or myself and it smells completely differently on both of us. My skin brings out the florals with a slight sweetness and on my husband it is quite the masculine leather with little to no florals. I wear it most often in autumn when the chilly mornings transforming into warm days makes the leather sing.

Galop d’Hermes by Hermès

Rose and leather

The unusual quince opening intrigues me, pulling me and allowing me to properly apply several spritzes of Galop. This is a stunning rose leather perfume that transforms throughout the day. Linear it is not. It is slightly dusty, or I could say dry. At the beginning it is momentarily bitter and rather than distract my nose, the bitterness lures me in. The longevity is stellar.

Cuir de Russie Parfum by Chanel

If push came to shove, I would rank Cuir de Russie Parfum as my holy grail leather perfume. Fragrantica lists the notes as “aldehydes, rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, russian leather, tobacco and vanilla”.

Words fail me. Cuir de Russie Parfum is perfection for me. The florals are there on the side lines. Leather is the star here and as my skin warms during the day the florals send leathery tendrils to my nostrils. Even though I wear this dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, I feel as if I have an expensive strand of pearls draped around my neck.

Do you enjoy wearing leather perfumes? Do you tend to wear them during certain seasons, or year-round? Which leather perfumes are you currently loving, if any.

Fragrant kisses,

Sandra xo

  1. I could wear a different leather every day for a week and never repeat. This would also make me quite happy.
Wearing a lot of Cuir de Lancome, Cuir Cannage, Jolie Madam and Bottega Veneta. Not quite cold enough for the Chanel Cuir de Ruisse EDT on me yet. Putain des Palaces is getting rolled out this week.

    • Hi tfk31, you have some lovely choices there. I love Cuir de Lancome but keep hoarding the last bottle that I have. I should really wear it. Love love love Putain des Palaces.

  2. I absolutely love leather scents. Cuir anything has my attention!
Cuir de Russie is a special love and have a tiny drop of the parfum left. Cuir Ottoman is a winter fave and a Sultan Pasha oil called Ambrecuir.
My god, we smell so posh don’t we!

  3. Leather scents? Oh hell yes. I am swanning around today in Cuir Mauresque, and was luxuriating in Cuir de Russie parfum at the weekend. From the meanies like Bandit and Rien to the luxuries like Onda’s spice or Cuir Cannage’s cool leather, from the elegant classics like Knize 10 to the fruited skins of Boxeuses and soft suedes like Bottega Veneta, I’m in. All year.

  4. Hi Sandra!
It’s the same in London. This morning was really chilly but tomorrow it’s going to hit 23 degrees.
It doesn’t feel cool enough for me to wear leather just yet but I’m really looking forward to it. My number one is Cuir de Lancôme, but now I’m thinking Galop would be really nice right now…

    • Hi Tara! Isn’t this autumn just perfect?! We are so lucky. After two comments about Cuir de Lancome I need to pull out my bottle and just wear it. No more hoarding. Galop is wonderful for the current weather.

  5. Love the smelll of leather, especially soft Italian gloves. Still, prefer leather scents on others rather than wearing them myself. i think birch tar is not my thing in perfume and it is detectable in many leather scents.

    • Hi Ingeborg,
Soft Italian gloves are on my bucket list of things to treat myself to one day. I truly enjoy smelling leather perfumes on my husband.

      • I got my first pair of Italian leather gloves when I was 14 and the whole family accompanied my father to Florence where he attended a large medical congress. Gloves without a designer name can be beautiful too and won’t break the bank!

        • What a wonderful memory to have! I do enjoy wearing leather gloves but I have a pair of wool Norwegian mittens that I wear more frequently. 😊

  6. I’m a huge fan of leather scents, and I wear them all year round, the only exception being Jolie Madame: I prefer wearing it in winter. My favourites are Cuir de Lancome, So French, Gomma and suede softies such as Cuir Amethyste and Daim Blond. Hope one day I’ll have Parure and Galop, both are outstanding.

I just remembered Azuree but sadly, I don’t have a bottle (yet, I hope). It actually seems similar to Cabochard but the latter is a bit too harsh on me. And how could I forget the first Aramis? This floral leather is absolutely gorgeous!

  7. Hi Sandra! I love leather too. Cuir d’Ange is my most worn. Cuir de Russie EdT – Love the stuff. Cuir de Lancôme too. Vero’s as yet unreleased Naja EdP has a hit of birch tar in it, it‘s great. I have a bottle of Cuir Ottoman but cannot bear it. And as for Galop? Well you know I have it, and have used about two thirds of the bottle ….. great post. Hugs. Xxxxx

Cuir d’Ange is wonderful and I tens to wear it when it is warmer. Shame about Cuir Ottoman! I am flying through Galop as well. 🤭

  8. I am falling for Cuir Cannage though it did not impress me initially. It is similar to Knize Ten but it is a kind of velvety knize ten. I assume your cuir de russie parfum is newer version and not vintage one, right?

    • forgot to mention my fav. leathers. Cuiron is not strictly a leather but it is my most favorite leather, or must I say abstract leather, perfume. In fact, Cuiron is one of my 2-3 most favorite perfumes of all time. other leathers I enjoy are vintage versions of Knize Ten and Bel Ami.

    • Hi Fazal, Velvety is a good description of Cuir Cannage. It is so smooth. Yes, my Cuir de Russie Parfum is the newer version. I have never smelled the vintage, which is probably a good thing as I would obssess about it until i had some. 😆

  9. Your post made me realize how lacking my collection is in leather notes! Not because I don’t like the note, just don’t seem to have it represented. I recently tried Ombre Leather and really liked it. Might have to ask for a sample next time I am in Sephora.

  10. A very timely post, Sandra, since I was just thinking about leathers. Have gotten a few good suggestions here for me to go off and explore. There’s a few on the way already, and I doubt another few will be added to my ever growing list. I wish I had gotten the chance to try Cuir de Lancôme before it disappeared but hey ho. I like Cuir D’Ange but it’s a bit tame. Wanting something a bit rougher.

  11. LEATHER!! How I love it in life and fragrance Sandra.
When I want leather there are a few I reach for, Cuir d’Ange, old Trussardi donna and Cuir Amethyst. There are more here but they rarely get a look in.
Jin wears Bottega Veneta like it was made just for him. You have NO IDEA!!

  12. Hi Sandra, beautiful Indian summer here as well. Your description of the varieties of leather perfumes is spot on. I like leather perfumes softer, more floral, like Cuir d’Ange or Bottega Veneta or sweeter like Mon Cuir by Ramon Monegal.
Galop is a masterpiece but the more I wear it, the less I feel the leather. The quince note is very prominent so I’m happy I only bought a decant. Maybe I should test it in wintertime…

    Like

    • Hi Neva, I completely forgot about Monegal’s Mon Cuir. It is beautiful. Softer leather are perfect companions for every day. The quince note really is fascinating – I wish it lasted longer. You never know, cooler weather might be what is needed for you.!

  13. Daim Blond and cuir mauresque are the only leathers I’ve tried.
Someone here mentioned Kelly Caleche a few months ago- that’s on The List. Added Mon Cuir to it now.

    Great post, Sandra! Thank you.

    • Hi Jyotsna,
Kelly caleche is beautiful. Used to wear it a lot to work. I have also enjoyed wearing cuir amauresque when I had a decant. Need to smell Daim Blond again. Thank you for the tip.

    • I forgot about Kelly Caleche! EDT and EDP didn’t work for me but the parfum is a bliss. Less leathery, granted, but also rounder and better balanced.

  14. I tried Amouage Myths Man yesterday. It was not for me, decidedly masculine and an ashy kind of leather. It seems very well built, and after the top notes disappear there’ is a nice rum note.

So happy to try some of the Amouage perfumes, thanks to Sandra.

    • Hi Ingeborg, Myths Man is quite masculine. I am quite curious about Amouage Tuberose Love. Have you tried that one yet?

      • No , I haven’t. It does look like it is a sweet, creamy floral judging from the notes. But hard to know without testing on skin.

  15. Hi Sandra very good topic for a post. I LOVE Leather Oud! I hope that’s not too much… also a Leather Rose I purchased in Paris Yves Rocher very nice I should have bought a few bottles!! I was with Scott when he bought the Cuir Cannage at Paris Airport, that was nice. I tried a few at Le Bon Marche, by Memo all the leathers i was loving the French and Italian and each bottle was 470 Euro! I have plenty samples to satisfy my craving every now and then. Cuir Amethyst is my daughters favourite!
Need to try Galope Hermes sounds wonderful xxxxx
