Hi APJ,
A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.
You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.
SOTD 15.10 – 21.10.2018
You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.
Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.
Go To It Crew.

don’t think it’s just your wonky nose. While I’ve not smelled this one, pretty much all of the ones I have tried have a layer that is very, very similar, the “tauerade”. They have a tendency to go to megaton levels of radiation on me, too. (But, OMG, the soaps… the soaps are gorgeous.)

Do you use the soaps? Or keep them and ‘display’ them?

oh, I use them. And use them with delight. Finished off a bar of Solar Engineer right down to the tiny scraps, and now on a bar of Data Miner. They keep their scent incredibly well, and have really good texture. (There may be another still-sealed bar sitting in my sock drawer…but I will be patient!)

👏👏 excellent thinking Mrs. Marzipan. I understand all too well the pull to keep trying new fragrances. It’s fun, let’s be honest. But to think that you will find something ‘better’ than what you have already sniffed, I think is about as likely as you winning that mega-million lotto (you didn’t. ☹️ I heard on the radio that there was no winner ) Think of all the perfumes you have worn and loved since you began this pursuit. You were, what, five years old? Still in diapers? There is no way you will find something better! Different, yes. But really, with the outrageous cost of some fragrances these days it’s better to be happy with what you’ve collected and USE IT UP! Full disclosure, I wrote this for my benefit just as much as yours.

Does Ginger Biscuit smell like gingerbread? I desperately want a fragrance that smells like Speculaas. It’s the Dutch version of gingerbread. I’ve got Dries Van Noten which doesn’t do it for me. My mom still buys me those cookies for the holidays. Ginger Buiscuit is sweet and almost bready with some hazelnut in the mix to my nose. Happy Doobie Day! Recreational marijuana is now legal in Canada. We can smoke a joint anywhere we can smoke a cigarette. This means that we can now go to our local government-run pot shop and buy some weed, then cruise over to our government-run liquor store to purchase our booze. We can fill up our cars with government taxed gas and pick up some cigarettes at the local depanneur. Also heavily taxed by the government. But, don’t worry, if you get sick, just head on over to a government-run hospital. You’ll only have to wait eighteen hours to be seen. Possibly seventeen if you’re bleeding profusely. You might have been able to see your doctor, but in all likelihood, he/she has left the province because of the government imposed salary caps. Since the government has yet to interfere with the sale and distribution of perfume, I’m safe. Wearing vintage Shalimar perfume on a rainy, cold day.

SOTN- Sadeen Blend from ASAQ. Oh boy.. this is magical. Long ago when I tried it was mehh.. typical rose oud combo. But it took me a while to understand the depth of the fragrance. It opens with some florals mostly rose and musk. The rose is very fresh. after a while, it starts to get a bit sweeter and spicier when Amber kicks in. You get the very nice rich amber accord with oud at the background. In the drydown its all about the rich oud or agarwood. The oud is non-skanky and very rich n has a very depth character. Some people in fragrantica say, they get incense. I do not get the incense, however, the aged agarwood has that kind of rich depth smell. Almost like incense but I personally doubt that. Overall love love and love it..

She sprayed it liberally all over herself. Then turned round and sprayed it all over my tee shirt.
Ihad to go supermarket shopping and didn’t have time to go home to change my tee shirt. As I was in the shop a lady next to me asked what perfume I had on because she thought it was very nice. She asked what it was..I replied that I couldn’t remember. Same thing when waiting in checkout line. I didn’t want to admit why a retired aged woman would be wearing this perrfume .

PG Arabian Horse elegantly dribbled down my thumbs. Strategic perfume placement courtesy of the Machiavellian folk at Lucky Scent. Why do they continue to use these psycho sample vials? I was tempted to take a hammer to it this morning. You need a vice-like grip, the digit dexterity of a virtuoso pianist and a PhD in physics to get these shi**y bottles open. Half way through this soul-sucking procedure my hands and fingers began cramping up in a convincing imitation of advanced rigour-mortis. I decided to take a break only to watch the stupid plastic cap, which had shown signs of surrender, sink defiantley back into the vial. I redoubled my efforts with a lot less finesse and a whole lot more brute force. The cap gave way suddenly and unexpectedly resulting in the contents of the vial splashing over my thumbs, fingers and trickling up my sleeve. Infuriating. We must mount a campaign to convince Lucky Scent to replace these evil vials. Perfumistas, time to mobilize!

Agreed! I usually open these vials pulling the plastic part with my teeth. That way I think I’ve swalled a fair amount of perfume in the past decades. Surely more than was left in the vials after my opening attempts.

Bizarrely commando this morning. But now, post gym, wrapped up in Encens Mythique while I transcribe a research interview and prep for another one scheduled for later. They are so much fun to do, and SUCH a ball ache to type them up later.
yesterday was MEM–always such a pleasure to wear that. Wednesday was Cuir Mauresque (and the en-birthdayed mr crikey was smelling utterly lovely in the rose and bitter oranges of the Lush/Gorilla Road from Damascus. He’s so much better at wearing rose scents than I am, damn it.)

No Saturday errands for me today. I’m in recovery mode due to little stay in hospital Thursday. (Nothing major, or nothing we can’t fix) Wore tiniest splash of Dame Black Flower Mexican Vanilla to get me thru the doors, should have worn more as the day involed a lot of waiting. Yesterday, inspired by Brigitte some Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple for a restful afternoon.
Today I’m trialling Juicy Couture Dirty English on left arm – not lasting at all but initial sniff reminds me of CK Eternity for Men. Right arm, Montale Patchouli Leaves – it’s softening, not a scratchy Patchouli. Earthy and dusty.

I love Black Flower Mexican Vanilla too and oddly enough it reminds me of what my brain “remembers” Love’s Baby Soft smelling like…do you get that connection as well? Perhaps a more grown up slightly less powdery version?

Being that I haven’t smelled BFMV in a few years and the last time I smelled Love’s Baby Soft seems like a lifetime ago I can’t vouch for that connection. BUT, you’ve got me excited here. I’m going to sniff the Dame next time I’m downtown and see. Offhand, based on memory, I would not connect them tho. I seem to recall BFMV being a rather spicy vanilla? And quite powerful while LBS was a bit of a lightweight, musky floral? I really don’t know. How did they come across on your skin?
LikeLike
Both read as super sweet and a bit powdery… but my recollection of the Love’s is from the 1970s and I am sure current reformulated is nothing like what I remember. I haven’t sniffed it in what, almost 50 years? The Black Flower Mexican Vanilla is the older round bottle from when it first came out. I bought it for middle marzipan. It lives in the basement. It’s full because it’s her second bottle that replaced the first bottle she thunked.

Wearing Ultima by Charles Revson. It can easily be my signature scent. Previously around 2 years ago while I first started my perfume journey, I was very fussy with perfume. In a way that, didn’t like to smell those who were categorised as women. Even was fussy with unisex fragrance. Until I fell in love with vintage. And credit goes to couple of people. Portia is one of them. Still Opium and Miss Dior(vintage) in my mind. Outstanding creation. I felt in love immediately and they took me to a different place. Still, I can remember, my brain cells were trying to process the fragrance and I was smiling all the time. They were magical. Since then I have a soft and weak corner for vintage perfumes. Only problems are they are expensive and not easy to find. Later, one of the good souls introduced me Ultima. The rich sandalwood was haunting. That day I kept visiting that perfume. And she saw the joy in my eyes. Later she surprised me with a bottle. I was out of this world. My joy didn’t have any limit.
Sometimes I fell I am weird. People at my age(28!!!) they don’t talk about the vintage perfume. They are not interested at all. But I think most of the modern perfumes are not up to that standard. Even when I talk to my friends about my project car they give me a look. Because those cars are old.
I really want to know what you people think. It really does not matter though lolll.. Because vintage perfumes will remain special to me.
Happy Weekends

Evan, getting into vintage is opening up a whole new universe. There’s so much to explore. Don’t be afraid to take the odd risk if you come across something you’re unfamiliar with. The beauty of vintage is that they contained so many materials that are now prohibited. I think it’s great that something you liked has turned into a passion, so what if your friends don’t get it. We’re all individual and have our own interests.

Evan, my perfume obsession started mere five years ago with vintage perfumes and even though I have tried and loved numerous modern frags, I still have a soft spot for vintage, especially Guerlain, Caron, Lancome and Dior, and I don’t think this will ever change. Oh, and I forgot to say that I was 28 when I fell for the perfumes of yore. There’s no need to be embarrassed when you love something, be it old cars, fragrances or music, what matters is that they make you happier.

Evan- I adored Ultima and had my own bottle WAY back in the day (I am almost twice your age 🙂 !!). No one ever mentions Ultima!!! I would encourage you to continue your exploration of vintage if it touches your soul and smelling them makes you happy. You should wear what you want to wear, regardless of what others in your age bracket think. I was wearing very sophisticated perfumes in my youth (Chanel, Dior, Caron) while most of my preteen and teenage peers at the time were wearing more age appropriate fragrances but I did not care. Perfume is extraordinarily personal. As long as you are not putting yourself in financial difficulty obtaining elusive vintage continue on your quest! And I look forward to hearing what you are wearing because I am sure many of your vintage perfumes are ones from my distant past.

Brigitte thanks love for your kind words. Yes, perfume is very personal. I love dark, thick, loud, heavy perfumes. My better half loves soft, floral, sweet perfumes. Sometimes I point out that as Yin Yang.. lolllzzz. And financial difficulty, yes I have already experienced that. So that for the head up.
I don’t have many vintages but I’ll try my best.

Evan, you’re bringing joy to this old broad’s heart! A 28 year-old vintage lover! And, apparently enjoying all things oldy-woldy. I love it! My eldest daughter (33) has a similar love for things of years gone by.
I’m going to sound like a grumpy old lady here, but, I don’t care either. So listen up. The perfumes back then were better. So were the clothes. Cotton t-shirts did not look or wear like cheap toilet paper. Wools were lush and thick. The cars were amazing – sexy and fast AF. You did not have to assemble your furniture. Beds did not collapse if you were enjoying a particularly energetic evening. And sunglasses were just so much cooler.
Back to the vintage scents. I’ve only recently started to delve into them. Sadly they do seem to be pricey and I always worry about which ones age well, but nevertheless I think I’m going to be purchasing a couple each year. And, unlike you, I get the bonus of revisiting a great time in my life. You, on the other hand, are making memories. Pay attention. What your friends think? Pfft! Never mind. They don’t know what they’re missing!

marcellavmiller your comment made me laugh last night at work. I do agree what you said.
I still remember one event, I was a school going kid. One day after school me and my mum went for a photo shoot. I had heaps of fun with her that day. She bought me a hand pulled lollipop from the street. I always used to touch her long hair because I used to love them. ( I cried the whole day when she cut her hair, she said.) She was wearing Charlie. I know the smell very well. I can reconnect from memory. I used to know when she is coming to pick me up after school. Because of her perfume. She was always late and I used to complain every day. But that used to vanished within a second with her smile, hug and a candy. It was not easy for her to maintain work, take care of 3 boys and house but my innocent brain did not understand that. Yes, perfume does bring back the memory. Some of them are very special for me.

So happy to hear that you’ve discovered vintage fragrance. In my opinion (despite that there are many fabulous and beautiful contemporary fragrances), vintage perfume are the most gorgeous, distinctive, and glamorous (I wear them often). Many ingredients are no more, are complex, and such a pleasure to experience. Perfume is a time-machine and allows you to explore historical culture through olfactory art. Don’t mind what others think, enjoy your pleasures and let your choices define your narrative. I recommend a wonderful book by Barbara Herman, Scent & Subversion, Decoding a Centruy of Provocative Perfume. She researched fragrances from the past century and you’ll be introduced to the past’s most spectacular perfumes. Best wishes and glad you’ve found this perfume-loving community.

Neva- anyone can do what I do. I have been blending for years. All it takes is a willingness to try. And luckily for me I have lots of friends and family that eagerly accept all that I make which means I can keep on making more!

My new bottle of Tauer Amber Flush Body Oil arrived, with a handwritten note from Andy. I do like that personal touch! This was a gift to myself, since my birthday came and went without very much celebration at the start of the month. Now I’ve put on generous amounts of this perfumed body oil, and my dry skin really likes it, and my nose likes it too! Will go to bed shortly and SOTN will be Prada Candy again. It will layer nicely with the amber, I’ve tried this combination before.
Something totally different: Has anyone of you already tried the limited edition Christmas products from Yves Rocher? Golden Tea shower gel sounds good, but I’ve not always been pleased with their Christmas offerings, so hesitate. I have Lush and Body Shop within a five 5-10 minutes walk, so have a better chance of making up my mind about those products.

So jealous of you having Lush in your neighbourhood. I don’t think we can buy Yves Rocher in Australia. Portia will know. I do know that I’m angry and disgruntled with the Crabtree / Evelyn Christmas packaging….and left a message to same effect on their Facebook page.
See Portia I’m not the only one to mention the C word.

Does Andy ship to Norway or do you have a mule? On his site there’s only limited countries he ships full bottles to☹️ Or is it different for the oil?
LikeLike
The body oil and samples in limited quantity ship to Norway. I think even the miniature bottles, but haven’t looked into that. My stepmother regularly visits family in Austria, so I do have the possibility of having items sent there and taken to Norway at a later date. But generally there’s always wine, apricot jam, chocolate and many other things which get priority.

Ok, maybe the oil can be shipped then. I’ve got many samples but didn’t realise that a full bottle would be out of reach. Typical.

Aus Liebe zum Duft in Germany has Andy Tauer’s perfumes, and ship to most countries, but at a cost. The given shipping rates for sure are higher than when I had a German perfume friend send a bottle to me (that was in fact done by using registered letter). I would guess your best option is to have someone mule perfume from London. Anything non-alcohol based seems to be easier to ship.

MMMM apricot Jam and chocolate would take priority for me too!!!!!

Was forced to put on some What I Did on My Holidays this evening. The gloom and cold are threatening to squash me. I was at a big box hardware store this afternoon and found the gigantic Christmas display with lit up trees helped to revive me. So did a walk thru the greenhouse. I come back to life when the snow starts to fly and the decorations go up. But from now till late November…no! Take me away 😖

Arz el Rab from the Berdoues Grand Cru Cologne collection…ginger, iris and cedar…perfect for this cold morning…and this brand made me realize that there is an oud for the oud haters out there- Oud al Sahraa…the bottle was thunked a while ago but it was/is a jammy resinous thing and you would not know there was oud in it were it not for the name. Plus, the bottle is so beautiful.

I love jammy resinous. Is that a new category? It’s right up my alley!

I made it up- LOL! But seriously, this is a good one for those oud adverse.

Excellent category. It’s a keeper. Along with your wood pudding which I still haven’t figured out. Mix cedar chips into a custard?

There’s several commenters over on NST who have adopted that wood pudding expression. I have to say I haven’t really figured out what fits in that category, but then I don’t suppose its my favorite style anyway.

Well…I like woods, and pudding tastes good, but I’m not convinced that sprinkling wood chips over my pudding is a good idea. And then do I use a wooden toothpick to extract the wood chips lodged between my teeth? Or, is it more of a wood powder. Pulsed through the food processor? Need more info.

Ingeborg is right..It came from NST…for me it is a sweet sandalwood..that’s my interpretation..when I combine sandalwood e.o. with vanilla bean e.o…..wood pudding for me.

No nonsense Chanel No. 19. I’m interviewing several painters today. My regular crew double booked themselves and I was none to pleased at having them show up every third day. They can expect to be shelved if I come up with a good team today 😠

No 19 is crisp and gorgeous. Speaking of painters, one of my work friend’s hubby is a painter…..so guess what Saffy has done? I’ve asked them to visit my house and see if he can find time to paint my hallway. The walls are a very insipid barely there white/ pink…my mother in law loved pink. I detest it.
Marcella can you recommend a lemony/ yellow colour. I’ve thought Hawthorn yellow might be ok..

I’m reminded of the time many years back when hubs went away for work for about a week. My daughter and I had a big idea to redecorate the sitting room. We removed the wallpaper and had to fill and sand the walls down before repainting the whole room. It looked great, too. We only had evenings to do it so it was all go for that week. I wish I had the same energy nowadays 🙄

Sure. I need to know which company’s paint you use. How much natural light is in your hallway. Is it east, south etc light? And if it is furnished (console table, bench, etc) what colour. Wood (pine, oak, dark mahogany, etc), painted furniture and colour of it. That sort of thing.
Also Hawthorn yellow can be very subjective. Better you specify a known paint colour name that I could look at. If ya want, that it 😁

That drives me insane when workmen disappear for days on end😡 When I’m having a job done I want it completed in shortest possible time. And as this is your business and you’re in the firing line from clients it must be doubly annoying.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I don’t tolerate it. Ever. I have a reputation for bringing my work in on time and on budget. I’ve worked with most of my crew many times. So this rarely happens. When it does, they’re gone. End of story. It’s very hard to be inconvenienced when your home is being renovated. Nobody likes it. I am a total bear when protecting my clients’ time because I know how important it is to them.
In this case, the clients have decided to vacation in Italy for the duration. But, that’s not the point. They want to come home to a job that is completed. Hence, the Chanel No. 19. Time for the big girl pants.

Oh yes, I like that too. And what’s great is that you can have it as gentle or as loud as you like. No lawn mowing here today, couldn’t be bothered as I think there’s a nasty lurgy floating around inside me. Feel like I’ve been beaten with several baseball bats. Great, and it’s only October 😒
