SOTD 22.10 – 28.10.2018

Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 22.10 – 28.10.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Janibs? What sort of autocorrect is that? Jacobs, of course.
Monday is going swimmingly so far. Car engine started to go on fire this morning when hubby was heading off on two hour drive for work. Luckily it happened just a mile from home!

  5. Had a marvellous day. Co worker and her hubby came to check out my house. He will begin the job tomorrow ,and hopefully it will be completed by Friday morning. My only worries now are; 1. will I choose the correct colour and 2 what hubby’s reaction will be. I will shower soon ,using my Nantucket Briar shower gel… then I will THUNK the last 2 mls of the mini Miracle bottle.

    • Get some paint samples and try out on the wall. It’s hard to know what any colour will look like as it depends on the natural light in the room. Good luck with the project. Hubby will have a nice surprise after his holliers.

Middle Notes.Orange Blossom.Jasmin. Lily of the valley
Base Notes. White Woods. White Amber. Musk
        Hope this helps.
I gave a generous spray at Lunch time. it’s still going strong on my skin now at 22.00.
It’s not at all heavy. Quite refreshing. I like it.Very reasonable price from UK sellers. I usually have a look on the Allbeauty website. They do good prices.

  7. Two iris days in a row: yesterday I wore the long-neglected Infusion d’Iris and today Bois d’Iris by the Different Company.

Brigitte, I wrote something about Safari in the last week’s thread, have a look when you have a moment, please!

    • Diana- I love galbanum and have used the essential oil in some of my blends five or so years ago. Eden used to sell it but not sure if they still do. REally like Chamade too. I wore Safari (the perfume version) in the mid 90s but never replaced once done. I have seen the EDPs on various online sites discounted. I have never done the ebay route and am a bit apprehensive. As soon as I break my no buy I will consider a bottle. I know it’s gorgeous.

        • Check Eden to see if they have it. That was the only place I could find it at many years ago. And a little goes a long way. I had only a sample and it lasted me for ages.

          Like

      • Brigitte, I believe that the bottles you saw on the discount sites are much younger, the juice is probably weaker than the one in the first batches (ain’t it always the case?). Once you decide to buy yourself some Safari, I’d suggest looking for it on eBay.

  8. I thunked the decant I made of eldest Marzipan’s full bottle of Arz el Rab. I went a bit bezerko spraying all day today when I took it to work. this was over a base of patchouli oil /carrier oil blend slathered all over my body. I am going to slather it on tonight too. I find it to be so soothing. Nothing harsh or rough about it. and it has a minty quality to it because I am fairly certain that patchouli is part of the mint family.

i will have to think about what I am going to wear tomorrow. The weather is getting cold so maybe my decant of Lalique Elegance Animale? It’s a leather which is very very underrepresented in my collection…something fruity/jammy on top…maybe peach?

Don’t know if anyone won the 1.6 billion..wouldn’t it be lovely if it was me? ha ha !!!

  9. Eau de IKEA. Spent 5.57 gruelling hours there with both my girls looking at 3,748 items for the youngest’s new apartment. She is currently living with me after an emotionally devastating break-up of a long term relationship. The scummy weasel of a dirt bag she was living with decided after four years he wants an Open Relationship 😖. Her heart was well and good broken. I have been ministering motherly care and comfort for the past five months. I will miss my little girl terribly when she moves out 😭

  10. I am wearing Dunhill icon. It should impress those who want longlasting neroli. I am puzzled because Icon is kinda linear on me, neroli from beginning to finish and lasted over 12 hours. It has impressive longevity though I suspect sillage is not much but I prefer it that way. I liked it in the beginning but I am not sure the lack of development has impressed me. I was thinking of getting a second bottle but now I am doubleminded.

      • Brigitte, I hope it works same for you if you like neroli because my experience might be unique. Others do report evolution but to me it smelled same even after 12 hours.

  14. Le Labo Iris 39 today. I put some on before drying my hair, so had to reapply! Fun fact: Last week at work a young co-worker came into my office, sniffed , and asked if I had been shopping at Lush! So she perceived the drydown of the Le Labo iris as something from Lush. It was a comment with good intentions, so I didn’t exactly go into detail about my scent, just told her it was an iris.

This morning, Wednesday, the ceiling has been completed. Wow….it looks marvellous..so happy. Gary ,the man of the hour is having a break ,at the mo and will begin painting the walls in Vanilla Cream.
Scent -wise I’m wearing a combo of 3 different scents; sample of Slumberhouse Sedane…too too syrupy ,and clings like a vice to my skin. I’ve applied Laguna to refresh me. And under my nose I’ve placed a drop of SDV. Whilst the painting is being done I’m listening to Leonard Cohen, ‘playing on my computer ,and creating ‘masterpieces’ ie Christmas cards.

    • Some unsolicited advice. Don’t buy essential oils from a perfume company. Unless you have money to burn. The prices are massively marked up. The fruit blends are 20 dollars for 1/4 of an ounce on the Providence website but sell for 30 dollars for one ounce at White Lotus. I made the mistake years ago of buying oils from Mandy Aftel (spent hundreds of dollars in one order and she did not so much as send me a free sample or write a personal note in the book that I also bought in that order and one of the samples I bought arrived empty because it spilled into the box…I was really annoyed) only to find out from another perfumer that Mandy’s source was White Lotus who was selling those exact same oils for one fourth to one fifth the price she was charging. I kid you not. The perfumer who told me was kind enough to direct me to both White Lotus and Eden where she got all of her oils from as well.

Take out the middle man. You can get an enjoyable patchouli from White Lotus, Eden Botanicals, Aura Cacia, Now Essentials and even Vitacost. I have used and enjoyed them all. Age the patchouli yourself if you need for it to be aged (right now I have a big bottle sitting in my basement aging). Also, Eden has a patchouli sampler pack for eight dollars for four full vials.

OK that’s all I have to say 🙂

      • Bravo 👏🏻 That’s quite the informative reply. I’d be hopping mad to be caught out like that. Hmph, can’t believe that perfumer was so grasping and without any acknowledgment either. But anybody can get caught once. I get most of my eo from a local shop or a trusted online seller. Don’t think Eden ship here, more’s the pity.

  23. Warning – long post alert 🤪
I’m hitting up my NR scents these next few days – after finding out there is a new one, Rouge, I thought it best to revisit the ones I already have! Yesterday was the little black cube, today the white one. Tomorrow For Her, in the black bottle, pink writing which I think is this best. Thinking of ya Cassieflower 🤩
Then I remembered few other things .. Saffyishere, for your aches and pains at the end of your busy day have you tried Karmarub? It’s an Aussie liquid magnesium you apply to yourself. Should be able to find in chemists and good for headaches 😘
And Brigitte, me too a knitter – super easy knitting pattern if you want to look up is Jo Sharp, it’s a moss stitch beanie. Looks like it’s called Large Beanie. I’ve made quite a few. Do you know/knit with Madelinetosh yarn? 😍

I am a newbie knitter…took me years to learn how to even manage rudimentary knitting thanks to a very kind librarian who ran a knitting club that I used to attend at the library while the kids did their volunteer work. Unfortunately she left and my skills never quite took off. Don’t know how to read a pattern and just do basic stitching for basic hats and scarves. Can’t even tell you what I do-LOL! Knit..knit and pearl??? don’t know. What I do know is that my recipients are happy with something that is homemade and free 🙂

One day I will explore and learn how to really knit following a pattern and also various types of stitches. However, I will say that what I do knitting wise is incredibly relaxing and meditative so it’s worth its weight in gold or the cost of a skein (that’s what a ball of yarn is referred to as, right?). I buy my yarn for very inexpensive at Walmart. I get Lion’s Brand Hometown America because it’s thicker and easier to knit.

Christy’s was an Australian firm, and this fragrance was being produce before the second world war and into the late ’40s, as far as I can work out. The packaging on mine suggests pre-war certainly, and maybe pre-Art Deco too. It comes in a hefty splash bottle with a glass stopper, inside a marbled brown cardbaord box.

The juice has held up surprisingly well. It’s got some lemon and lavender in it, and I think maybe some herbs; I’d guess it is just a typical EdC, nothing remarkable other than its age and that it is Australian. Like most vintage fragrances it’s lost some of its kick, it’s close to the skin and the top notes are ephemeral indeed. It is still quite a nice one to wear occasionally, for old times’ sake.

      • Portia, I bought a Bosch thirteen years ago. I love it. When I buy an appliance I specifically avoid too many bells and whistles. The more gee-gaws there are the more techy components are required to support all that complex technology. And that means the likelihood of malfunctions, glitches etc. goes up. Suddenly you’re best friends with your repairman and he’ll be sauntering around in your kitchen wafting Shalimar. The same reason BMW’s and Mercedes are always in the shop. They are so highly engineered that some temperamental computer component or another is always throwing a hissy fit. My advice is get what you need. Don’t be seduced by all the high tech flouriches and bows.

My husband is miserable at this task. REFUSES to read the directions, actually throws them out. The first thing he does!!! Then he screws it up, swears at the irritation of it all and walks away in disgust. Like it’s the furniture’s fault 🤨. So, my eldest daughter and I will have a workshop and patiently teach the youngest daughter how to do it. At least that’s the plan. I may also be walking away in disgust. Sadly it isn’t 1877 ,so I can’t say ‘here’s 20 cents ,call someone who cares’ like I wanted to, so just have to ‘cop it’. Anyway for those in Australia ,on GEM this arvo is the fast 5 netball, so I’ll put it on a couple of TVs at work. Since Operation Hallway is complete…the painting at least, I now have decided that the items which adorned the walls and tables ect need to be redone Do any of you have indoor plants and are able to keep them alive? Hopefully tomorrow I will feel better as the mower awaits.

I think I will go with St Clair Scents First Cut today…this is in my top five at the moment..gorgeous stuff…just wish it wasn’t so bloody expensive and it came in a 100 ml bottle because I would love to spray it with reckless abandonment as I usually do.

  44. Le Labo 39 today. My little 15 ml bottle won’t last me more than a year, and now i’m curious about the Tonka one! Not really a brand I waant to fall in love with, all that hype with them filling the bottle especially for you plus the price tag kind of puts me off.

My Andersen furniture coffee table is in the process of being assembled by a young chap from a local design store. Rather a lot of work it looks like, so I’m counting myself lucky I didn’t have to do it myself. The barstool for the kitchen is also a nice step up from the IKEA one which have served me for 9 years. A good day even if it is SNOWING outside. It was not forcasted, so theree’s bound to be some chaos.

      • Tiger’s Nest is mostly a warm amber on me. I don’t find it animalic personally. It has an odd note hovering in the background and I can’t figure out if it’s the aldehyde or lemon. In any event, it is easy to wear, has decent sillage and good longevity. Also received Eleventh Hour, Patchouli-Oud (Affinessence), and Caron Pour Un Homme which is a big like. A old school vibe lavender/vanilla. The patchouli reminds me of what the cool kids wore in high school while I was wafting Shalimar. Eleventh Hour was not my bag, but then I have a really bad relationship with practically all Byredos.

        • OOOO Caron Pour Homme has been on my radar for a while now because I like the notes and a HUGE bottle can be bought online for a song. I will be curious as to what you have to say when you give it a proper wear. Portia refers to it as lavender lollies.

  46. Stove shopping was a godawful nightmare. The appliances they make are so revoltingly cheaply made these days. Getting something of good quality requires paying through the nose. I’m thoroughly disgusted 😠. Having a cup of tea and heavily scented with Sedona Sweet Grass, the ultimate calming and restorative fragrance to me.

    • Marcella- true. I need to get a new stove plus oven. Looking at miele. But —gah- the quality! I’ve replaced more appliances than my mother ever had to. 😕

Hmm, I think I need to sample Sweet Grass.

      • Miele has a good reputation. Pricey though. When I say stove I am referring to a freestanding range. So a stove and oven combined. Of which I’ve owned only two of in my forty plus years of cooking.

      • Oh. And Sedona Sweet Grass. I’m loving it more every time I wear it. I ordered the perfume oil roller ball, not my preferred vehicle for fragrance, but not yet ready to part with over two hundred dollars for the full bottle.

  47. Sunday morning! Yesterday’s SOTD for my party was Aftelier Parfum de Maroc layered with Aesop Marrakesh intense. The tea party was glorious. I had a constantly boiling pot of masal chai. Last guests left around 10pm.

Lazy day today. In Chergui. I have time to read throgh everyones posts and catch up on New Sniffs and The Saturday Question. Just like my parents used to read the Sunday papers, only better.

  48. Wearing HdP 1725 today. I don’t know about this one. As soon as I sprayed it I got a big vanilla hit, which wasn’t really what I was looking for on a sunny day like today; I was hoping for more of the citruses. I think it might be time to move this one on.

  49. A gloriously sunshiney Spring day. Sadly I have to go to the Hellhole. Hubby is leaving Sydney today. He took lots of fab pics of the famous Bondi beach. When I chatted to him this morning he said he planned on ‘heading north’ Will get a text message tonight from him. Jyotsna that tea party you held sounds like a great time was had. I’ve made 55 Christmas cards…5 more tonight ,then I can pack away my ‘factory’ for another year!!!
I’m going to wear something soft, dreamy and with a touch of romance to celebrate Spring. Bluebell

  50. Very fragrant tonight in Bond No 9 New York Oud. I smell delicious! This was part a a huge, delightful box of treats from Mel. I am giddy seeing all the samples. Thank you😘

PS. Hubby was a bit alarmed- “tell me you’re not going to try all of those at once”. He’s probably reminded of when I get art supplies then I simply must swatch & mix them all.

  51. Bottega Venetta …again…might just be thunking this sample because I am loving it so I many wear it for the next few days. Sadly, even discounted the bottle is well over 100 USD. So no full bottle in my near future. Will keep it on my mental list and hope eventually the price will go down. The first true leather I have actually fallen for (unless one counts Ineke’s Evening Edged in Gold which I think has suede in the base)

  53. Catching up on inking for Inktober this morning. Nest Indigo sounded just right. Just dabbed some on.

This is One of my New Treasures. Very different from what I expected (inky or rainy accords) I’m getting some lovely wood from my left wrist but alchol+floral (can’t make out yet) on my right wrist. Much softer than my normal frags. I think it has some nice complexity. Let’s see what emerges in an hour or so.

  54. I wore Tauer URC during all of Sunday. I love it! Then used hours on the net looking for perfume bargains, no real luck. It is quite depressing to see how few interesting, used bottles are put up for sale and at prices near eighty percent of recommended retail price for the most part. Did see a few sellers offeering decants, so will make a note to follow them.
