Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 29.10 – 4.11.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

Go To It Crew.

  1. Scent of Bed last night was Caron Pour Un Homme from Portia’s Perfume Prize Package. This is definitley also pour une femme. A gentle powderpuff cloud of lavender and vanilla, so well blended that neither note ran the show. Made for a quiet, dreamless night.

  2. Oops! Forgot SOTD Patchouli-Oud, also from the afore-mentioned PPPP. Reminds me of the patchouli oils I used to smell in the 70’s, but more refined. Not really my style, but fun to wear on occasion.

  3. Well, yesterday I wore vintage Boucheron then vintage Ralph Lauren Safari. For bed, I tossed on some Zum Frankincense and Myrrh. I could still smell it a bit this morning; so, I spritzed LUSH Karma.

  6. Having got some all over my fingers while making a sample, I topped up the dose of CDG2 Man.

And this evening, post gym, some Au Dela Narcisse. Third wearing in a week. Is this a record for me when I’m not away somewhere? But it was just the rich brightness that I needed to cut through the gloom of the early nightfall. Clocks went back yesterday and at 55degrees north, sunset is just past half past four. And there are two more months of the days getting shorter.

  7. A thorough dousing in Caron Pour Homme in an effort to control my raging anger and sky-high blood pressure. The maniacs at IKEA put me on hold for 40 MINUTES. You’re probably thinking I had some incredibly complicated and difficult enquires to make. No. I needed to change a delivery date. Ten minutes waiting for the first person who could not effect this simple change. Forty minutes waiting for the person who eventually could. Outrageous. A letter of complaint has been sent 😡

  9. Monday I wore vintage L’Artisan Tea For Two. I have a soft spot for tea fragrances, and this one is a cracker.

Today I am wearing Cologne Sologne by Nicolai Parfumeur. One of a few EdCs I have that I trot out in the hotter weather; this is a pretty good neroli scent. IIRC, I actually got this from you Portia.

  10. I am going out this evening to visit my favourite person. He took a turn for the worse on Friday but is well enough for us to visit. It’s his birthday today. I’ll put on my Anais Anais. I was most likely wearing it when I met him over 20 years ago!

  11. Monday I wore Fame by Lady Gaga. I’m close to thunking the 30ml bottle. I like the scent ,but won’t be replacing the bottle, I don’t think. Tuesday has arrived ,and I’m feeling quite sad and lonely. I’m not wearing any scent today.

  12. Monday was Joop! Le Bain. I have become quite addicted to this little number of late.

Today was a Cuir Beluga sort of day.

      • I had always thought of CB as pretty subtle but as I was still sniffing it last night on my wrist, without a top up, maybe it isn’t as subtle as I thought. She sure is gorgeous though.
        Good luck with your appt.

SOTD; Chanel Gabrielle, perfect for this spring day.

        Like

        • Jealous of your spring! Now Cuir Beluga. Let’s talk. You thought it was subtle? Well, so did I. Until the day I was wearing it and my eldest daughter said it was projecting like crazy. She liked it a lot, but thought it was pretty powerful. And she is a bona-fide perfumista herself and wears a lot of heavy hitters sprayed with optimism. You think maybe we don’t smell it on ourselves? Oh, and thank you for the wishes on the apartment! It will be gorgeous if it ever comes together (and yes, of course it will 😃)

  13. Marcella – this one’s for you – yesterday I wore Le Labo Tonka 25. First sprays a lovely spicy orange, yet soft and fresh. Later, musk but not sweet. Bit woody and a bit green. Later I the day it reminded me of Santal 33. It wafted a little but would not call it strong, nor long lasting. Which is a shame because it’s a really lovely fragrance. Just a bit short on staying power on me.

    Like

    • Thanks Melanie! Great review btw. The fragrance sounds great and it would be one I’d like to try, but your description gives me pause. It’s not very noticeable and rather short on staying power. Combine that with Le Labo’s pricing strategy and I think it’s a safe miss for me. So yeah, double thank you!

  14. Cassieflower, dis for you 😍 tried NR Rouge on Saturday. First thoughts this is just like the others, but after a little while it became a bit more floral. Rose? Still the same NR musk without being too sweet. And it lasted for ages. And I really liked it. And you guessed it – i will be needing some!

    • Yesss💪🏻 Another convert. I get the Rose after a while and think there might be a smidge of iris also. My Smally wore it the other day and it was lovely on her little self.

  16. Neandertal Dark today. However much I like this–and I really do–I can’t bring myself to spend £200+ on a bottle. Sure, that bottle is an insanely lovely hand made ceramic cast of a knapped flint axe that you would want to just hold a lot, but, damn.

    Like

      • I think it’s actually pretty fair–if you consider you’d easily see that for just the ceramic work in a gallery or craft shop. And it’s still cheaper than an awful lot of the higher priced niche stuff out there…just more than I am comfortable with coughing up on a single bottle.

        Like

        • Nevertheless, those bottles are most likely mass produced, not hand made and while I really appreciate a quality, beautiful bottle, ultimately it’s the fragrance that warrants a potential purpose. If I wanted a one of a kind, hand-cast ceramic I would go to an art studio. Huh, then I could decant the perfume into my unique bottle 😏

          Like

    • Yes, I really like that bottle design. I’d display it after I used the juice up. I’ve actually got a piece of rock displayed that doesn’t look unlike this.

Just heard on the radio while I was driving my daughter to the metro that our temperatures for October have been well below normal. Yup. It’s been one of those.
On another note, I think we need to mount a search party for Neva. Our fragrant friend seems to be MIA 😲

Questions: 1) what are you going to wear 2) type of shoe 3) any jewelry 4) fragrance. Is it a ball-gown/opera coat affair? Or a sleek LBD do? Or perhaps a deadly sexy one-piece pant suit plunging down, down, down. This is fun. Can I come over and do your make-up, help pick clothes and generally hang out and make a nuisance of myself?

          Like

          • Hair, by somebody who isn’t me. Mani and pedi I will do myself. Brows recently done. Now, the dress is giving me pause for though as I can either go cocktail or full length and fabulous. Shoes and jewellery will follow suit. Perfume, will see how I feel on the day. Have to pack all in a travel case and get ready in the hotel. It will be ‘interesting ‘ jostling for space at the mirror as four of us ladies (ha, ladies😀) are sharing a room. And one guy gets a room all to himself, methinks he will have to share mirror space.

          • This sounds fun, Cassie! And an away thing to boot. I’d be tempted to go full length and fabulous. The opportunity so rarely arrives these days. I mean, you can never go wrong with a wicked cocktail dress, but that can be worn on so many other occasions. When I get the chance to do it up big, I take it. Either way, our little thug will be looking glam and gorgeous. Hope it’s a fun do, tho. Occasionally, in the past, the getting done up has turned out to be more fun than the actual event.

Lime is hard to get right; too often it smells like dishwashing detergent, so when I first smelled this I bought it and never looked back.

BTW, I’ve often found some pretty nice fragrances in op shops, but take a look at what this guy found in a Texas thrift store:

    • Greg, have you ever tried Ormonde Jayne Zizan? Or Frangipani? Both heavy on the lime, Zizan is more green with a tinge of herbal woody vetiver, the Frangipani is a BWF blend but the lime is very linear.

  22. Last night I tested the Rosie Jane perfume oil samples that came in the mail before I package them for middle Marzipans birthday in two months. James reminds me of Pacifica’s Mediterranean Fig and Leila Lou of Annick Goutal’s Petite Cherie. Rosie I cannot smell at all and Tilly is pretty but fades fast on my scent devouring skin. Angie is new and is a very pretty honeysuckle, jasmine and fig.
This perfumer is Australian but now resides in Los Angeles and I think her line is well worth exploring because the fragrances could replace the d/c Pacifica’s I love and they are also very very affordable for niche. Not only do they come in oils but also EdP and 1.7 oz are only 50USD but I see them discounted as well. Oh and the sampler pack of five was only 10USD with free shipping 🙂

I was very patient, didn’t go out every night because I didn’t want to make it worse, drank a lot of tea, did some slow yoga,…it took me almost a week to get back in shape. The last two days I was visiting cemeteries, lighting candles and meeting my family – the usual occupation on All Saints’ Day. SOTD was Antonia’s Flowers Tiempe Passate, which I thought appropriate. Today for a bit of work and a business lunch I wore Orris Tattoo from Parle Moi de Parfum. It’s my first iris based perfume and I’ve bought it mainly because it reminded me a lot of Versace’s V/S from the nineties.

UGH! Clocks get turned back tonight. Me no likey! Wearing Carnal Flower to distract me.
Tomorrow is moving day. At least the sun will be shining. I hope I can refrain from murdering Mr. LaurelHardy. I suppose I can behave since we will be helped by my daughter’s friends, my other daughter and my SIL. Yeah, I reckon I’ll be able to keep a lid on it.

    • OMG Marcella, I wish you luck for tomorrow. Moving is such a stressful thing to do but since you’ll have so many helpers I think it will be all right. Don’t forget to bring a bottle of champagne to celebrate when you’re done with the work.

      • Home. Pooped. Not me moving, Neva. My youngest daughter with stuff scattered in three places after a terrible breakup. She’ll be in her new digs on Wednesday when her bed gets delivered. But wow! I’m gonna miss her all over again 😢

        • I suppose you have a wonderful relationship with your daughter Marcella. It’s always hard when they leave us but I hope she will not live far away from you and you can see her regularly.

  47. Well ,kids.. I’m in LURVE!!!! I sampled Dustia Fleur de Lalita….so fabulous on my skin. Not such a fabulous price….. Might have to just buy a travel spray to see me through Summer, and save up for a big bottle. Heading to the pits, wearing Il Bacio. Hubby is having a ‘rest day’ today near Noosa ,after driving 700kms yesterday.

    • Well Yay!! Not about the price. Hope work treats you well. And you get a chance to have a good rest. I’ve just started my cards and I am panicking!

When does your husband get home?

      • Do not panic, sweet Jyotsna…one day at a time. Hubby has to be at work this Friday at 9,30 pm ,so I’m hoping he will be home on Wednesday,so he can get some sleep because he works nights. Work was remarkably ‘calm’ this evening, and now I have 4 days off. I will be joining in the cleaning frenzy which Marcella and Brigitte have been doing. It is nearly 10pm.. will shower soon ,have a glass of Shiraz and apply some Bluebell to go to sleep.

        • Saffy- I must focus. On cards. Got sidetracked by Midsomer Murders and then started sketching noir-ish characters. Do you think a Cluedo theme would well-received?
Sleep well, lovely Saffy, wrapped in Bluebell. And enjoy your time off!

I’m wearing YSL Y. (Thank you, Portia) And inking the last of the shady characters.

          • Y is such a beauty. They are still selling it in those beige cubical bottles but I haven’t tried the new version.
Is there a possibility that you post a picture of your noirish characters?

    • Yes, Dusita perfumes are so good that somehow one doesn’t think they’re overpriced. That said, I just wish I had more money to buy them all. Hope you’ll get a bottle of Fleur de Lalita soon enough, Saffy!

    • Saffy, please describe Fleur de Lalita. I haven’t been able to try Dusita Perfume but there’s been much talk about them recently. I hope your husband has a safe trip home.

      • Neva I’m useless at describing things, however ,I will try. On spraying I immediately feel uplifted and I feel happy. Imagine if you go to a florist shop to find the flowers behind glass doors in a cool room, or a fridge. Open that door ,and a cacophony of gorgeous scented flowers greets your nose. Add the iciness of the fridge. There is a ‘lightness’ or ‘airiness’ too. I’d equate Fleur de Lalita to a fragrance like SL De Profundis, or even April Violet by Yardley. Hope this helps.

  49. Travelling between cool and hot climes yesterday, so I went for AdP Acqua Essenza di Colonia. This is a really good all-rounder in my opinion. Today was another warm day, and I went with Tom Ford Mandarino di Amalfi.
