Hey Hey Perfume Junkies,

The idea is that anything worthy of comment, either good or bad, that’s passed under my nose through the week will get a short write up. Up till now I have kept APJ positive comments only, those days are gone. If I think something is terrible, shamefully lazy, greedy or stupid and you should know about it, it will be said. Not everything works for everyone and it would be pretty boring if it did >>> YMMV. I’d love it if you all agree, respectfully disagree, have any thought-out opinion and want to share, do so in the comments below. The point is starting a conversation.

New Sniffs Aug 2018

New Sniffs: 8.11.2018

Noir Anthracite by Tom Ford:

The opening is very bro-designer with ginger, some greenish spices and pepper backed by some woods. It’s got a metallic freshness and doesn’t smell bad. Takes me back to 1990s gym spray but not quite as aquatic. I can’t put my finger on what but it smells ridiculously familiar. If you’re between 15 and 35 your Dad probably still smells something like this. You’ll buy it for nostalgia.

Figment Man by Amouage:

Rotting grass clippings is the opening note for me and seems to go well into the heart. Pretty quickly that is taken over by a zingy geranium with a slightly off kilter wee sprayed wood. This is weird and commanding, The oily take on vetiver gives a petrochemical vibe. I love it/I hate it. The notes seem to be warring with each other. I also sense a white flower trying to tie the whole thing together but that might be the sandalwoods creaminess. After about 40 minutes Figment Man softens to a highly unusual creamy sandalwood and old chrysanthemum vase water.

Dent de Lait by Serge Lutens:

Wet, steamy flowers. Tropical nights and peonies in metal vases. Water, cold. A few minutes in and it’s definitely heliotrope. I like the green, bulby sweetness that smells like it should be fluffy and powdery. It’s not here, at all. Dent de Lait is a crystal flower magnet on your fridge, in a space ship. L’Occitane meets Buck Rogers. I like it but would never reach for it. Where’s the milk? This seems to be what most perfumers call cherry blossom and would fit perfectly into the 2018 releases of the DIOR Prive line..

  2. I may have sniffed the Tom Ford somewhere but not my cup of tea. And rotting grass clippings – doesn’t sound so appealing!!

    • Hey MMKinPA,
      You know I have really good memories of rotting grass clippings. We would mow the lawn and then put the grass clippings on an area of the garden. It gets REALLY hot in a grass clipping pile and smells amazing if you dig through it.

  3. No, I haven’t tried any of these, and they don’t sound like winners? Good to read your descriptive and honest reviews!

      • I haven’t sampled Figment Man; however, Figment Woman was also somewhat different. It is interesting, but an odd unpleasant note in the opening on top of white floral and pineapple. Not offensive, but not pleasant. It’s funny; I love so many fragrances and always have a huge wishlist. I love the excitement and thrill of finding fragrances I want to bathe in! Fragrance is one of my largest expenses, and I’m also somewhat relieved when I sniff a fragrance that is not for me!

  7. Haven’t tried any of these but the only one of the three that I’d reach for is the SL. That sounds very appealing. Rotting grass doesn’t do it for me at all at all, so Figment Man probably would be😷 but then, everyone’s nose picks up different things. Congratulations Melanie, enjoy your new sniffs.

  8. I have smelled all of these and agree with your assessments. Wouldn’t wear any of them, Figment is very weird, not sure what they were going for there.

  9. I have try the TF and Amouage. Haven’t try the SL. Amouage I can’t remember. But TF I do remember. The initial impression was, need testosterone to wear it or a hairy chest lol..

I had considered ordering a sample of Dent de Lait but quickly removed it when I saw Fragrantica reviewers reporting metallic notes as the most prominent, nothing metallic will ever make its place in my fragrance wardrobe. Aside from the notes, isn’t the branding a bit odd–“milk tooth”? Anyway, to each their own, and one person on Fragrantica is reporting this as their signature scent.

      I could see it becoming a signature. It is very easy wearing, just not what I was expecting, in a very Le Labo style release from Serge (you know, the ingredient on the bottle being only very insignificantly the story)

  13. I have not tried any of these but Figment Man sounds like one I would like to sample. Sorry Uncle Serge but the very name “Dent a Lait” is unenchanting.

  14. The Lutens does sound quite good actually. Never mind the name, which seems like it would fit a totally different perfume.

    I have a sample here of Amouage Figment man, received either from Portia (I think so!) or Sandra. This one was odd and just like several other Amouage samples, I get so little flowers here. So, not really for me, I loved Amouage Ciel, so will not give up testing Amouage perfumes, it just seems their most usual style is not for me.

      • Oh all right, then! I’ll give in and add D aL to my list. If it’s a SL and it’s good, it would be stoopid to not try some. Most of the Lutens’ perfumes are pretty awesome on me.

      • I tried the Lilac Love, which was good, I enjoyed using up the sample Sandra very generously sent me. However, it is not a perfume I need in my collection, it really reminded me of the violet flavoured candy you can buy in France (Les Anis de Flavigny Violette), not lilacs. I think the vanilla in the perfume may be the reason I associate the smell with candy.

      • Portia, have you tried Moon Bloom? You mentioned Love Tuberose above which reminds me that I’m apparently all about the BWF, especially these days. Carnal Flower does it for me, but I’m looking to expand. Have ordered Mahora and Fracas, now Moon Bloom comes to mind.

  16. Let’s see…..Noir Anthracite: ‘doesn’t smell bad’. Figment Man: ‘rotting grass clippings’. Not exactly ringing endorsements, Portia! But good to know. Your New Sniffs are a great tool to weed out the ‘don’t bother trying’ perfumes. Lutens and I have a rocky relationship at the best of times, so I’ll take a pass there as well. I’ll await until next week’s post and see if you’ve come up with some ‘must tries’. In the meantime I feel relieved that I can safely skip these.

  17. I received a sample of Noir Anthracite not long ago. I agree, it’s got the old-school masculine scents’ impression but the metallic note is what makes me want to wash it off: NA smells like heated railroad on my skin.

    No new sniffs for me this week but I’m revisiting all those generous samples I’ve received this year (so lucky!).
