Hi APJ,

A SOTD (Scent Of The Day) thread is a really good conversation generator. The idea is you’ll chime in through the week with whatever scent you are wearing. You don’t need to be super knowledgable, have high faluting tastes or be a published author to comment. Just tell us what fragrance you’re wearing, smelling, buying etc. and how it makes you feel and/or anything else about it that tickles your fancy.

You can also comment on everyone else choices too. It’s great to tell someone how much you love their choice, ask for more info about it, the house or perfumer. There’s someone here from around the world 24/7 and perfume people love to chat.

SOTD 19.11 – 25.11.2018

You probably won’t have time to write every scent, every spritz but whenever you feel the mood take you share your current spritz and a few things about it. Maybe you love/loathe it, want it, are excited by the notes/bottle/SA who sold it: WHATEVER! As always here at APJ, taking sides never means taking offence and everyone keeps it respectful and light, even though we can sometimes trawl the depths.

Hopefully you will come back and see if anyone has responded to your comment and you can reply to them.

  5. Nicolai Kiss Me Intense. Almond, heliotrope, vanilla dusted with some clove and cinnamon. It’s actually breaking through my clogged sinuses! A little almond cookie-ish but a comfort scent for for a cold rainy day.

  8. No scent yet. Thinking of trying Fille en Aiguille again. That stewed fruit accord did me no justice the last couple of wearings. Maybe this weather will change that.
    Major brain malfunction this morning 😞. I’m disgusted with myself. Arrived at the mechanic’s this morning to have my winter tires installed. Of course, said tires were still sitting in my garage 😳. My SIL was meeting me there to drive me home. He offered to get the tires out of my garage and bring them to the mechanic’s. Off we sailed. Went to open the garage door and realized I had left my keys in my car which was back at the mechanic’s. Yeah. It’s that kind of a day.

  9. No. 19 Poudré. The sun didn’t really appear today so no lawn mowing. Food shopping instead. Hate food shopping with a passion, but my cupboards are nearly bare. I did pick up a couple of Christmas clothing items for the Smallies though. Cute bits. No cute bitsfor myself😉

    • Sometimes shopping for food is the only thing that can get me out of my apartment when it’s very cold outside. You smell good, Cassie and I think you really need some cute bits 😉

    • Oooo! Smally stuff. Such fun. Used to love buying anything for the girls when they were young. And I LOVE food shopping! Especially in stores/markets that I don’t usually frequent. And in the U.S!!! The selection there is absolutely cra-cra! You want a container of yoghurt? There’s a bazillion brands, flavours, lactose-free, fat-free, sugar-free, hen’s teeth free. It’s almost as overwhelming as a good sniffing tour of a well-stocked perfume shop.

        • I understand that completely. I like it for the novelty. But if I just got to get it done, I’ll go to my regular supermarket where I know the location of everything, fly around buying my usual items and be done with it.
          Scouting ethnic markets and shopping in the States is more of an exploration and discovery expedition. Done in leisure with no real agenda.

  10. Multiple Rouge by Humiecki and Graef today. Red berries with a cool metalic undertone. I think it is acchieved by the coriander. Strange but very wearable. It’s slightly above zero degrees and I’ve decided to spend the day at home working as usual and later starting with my Christmas wreaths for friends and family.

  11. Didn’t notice the vintage week suggestion until just now… but Shem el-Nessim kinda-sorta counts, maybe? It’s a remaking of an Edwardian scent, cousin to L’heure Bleue.
    And now some early eighties Diorama. Yum!

  14. And so, having won the battle of bats in the belfry I thought it worth mentioning that I tested Absolute Aphrodisiac last night. As previously mentioned, I have no need for this sort of perfume. Just ask Pierre.
    Another one from Initio Parfums. And another powerhouse in terms of silage and longevity. It’s almost a straight forward vanilla. Very high quality, not too sweet. What sets it apart is the beautiful floral/boozy whiffs that float around the vanilla. The dry down is equally delish. That’s where a plush leather nudges the booziness of the way. Lasted forever.

  15. Gucci by Gucci for me today. Using plenty so I can thunk this clunky bottle and make room for something new. It’s a bit humid here this morning which I detest- nothing irks me more than trying to apply ones make up one while one is perspiring 😆🌦

    typical Manic Monday but I came home to the most beautiful card from Saffy…

    THANK YOU SAFFY!!! It is gorgeous and could definitely be sold in a stationery store…Saffy, you need to start your own business!

    now that I am home I can waft profusely….lashings of Eau de Lierre which is gorgeous and green and reminds me a bit of my beloved but discontinued Annick Goutal Eau de Camille…think its the shared ivy note.

      Oh, I can’t wait for Saffy’s card!!! I hope it will arrive soon. Eau de Lierre is very nice. How does it feel in cold weather. I’ve used my sample in the summer and it felt refreshing.

      • It’s equally as gorgeous in cold weather..it’s making me think of springtime. I did not wear it out, however. This morning in honor of a good friend’s birthday I wore two of her favorites…one tiny spray of Incense Mythique and two tiny swipes of L’Atessa because I don’t want to overdo it at work least the perfume grinch complains. Then when I got home I sprayed myself silly with Lierre!

        BTW, you won’t be disappointed with the card…I think Saffy needs to start her own business….I would surely buy them 🙂

    • Eau de Camille was very special, wasn’t it? I wore a lot of Goutals right through the 80’s. I almost ebayed-up a bottle of Eau de Ciel not long ago, but then got nervous thinking it may have been reformulated and backed off. One that I remember buying and regretting was Heure Exquise. It didn’t work for me then. Neither did Gardenia Passion. I’ll bet they would now, tho. Too bad the bottles have changed. The old ones were such classic beauties.

      • Eau de Camille was amazing…so many of the originals were sadly discontinued…I also liked Folavril (that tomato leaf note! and that was the very first fragrance…it was inspired by a face cream that she sold long before she segued into perfume making) and eau de Ciel (yes, it’s been reformulated..that was the first bottle I bought at the flagship store in Paris…I had never even heard of the brand but when I returned to the States I sought them out and found that they were sold at Saks in the city…Saks would do a buy one get one free event three times a year and I would get TWO 100ml bottles for $98 USD in the mid 1990s…talk about a bargain)….Gardenia Passion is actually a tuberose scent. I also blind bought Heure Exquise and while I didn’t hate it it wasn’t a love and ended up gifting it away….should have saved it! The old ones really were classics as you said.

    • Just reread this, Mrs. M and I think I’ll seek the Lierre out next time I’m downtown. The last week has lead me to think that I’ll be needing a lot of green and floral scents to drag me through this winter. It’s already weighing on me and my woody/vanilla/gourmand-ish perfumes are not doing the trick. I’m still fighting this weather and have not settled in to it yet.

      • Same here…the cold and snow reek havoc on my psyche and it’s just too early for this…I also think I am going to go with lots of spring evoking scents this winter…although I am currently up at the “buttcrack of dawn’ (as Mr. M puts it) and wanted something sweet with my tea so I paired Casmir with Bond no 9 New Haarlem….then topped it off with Rose Anonyme…..a trifecta of perfection….and for the day I may go with Ginger Biscuit from Jo Malone.

          I have four of the Hermes Jardins line that are going to be getting lots of use. They yell spring and summer to me. And, I need to be yelled at to remind me of sunnier, warmer days.

          • Well the two eldest are home now for Thanksgiving and middle marzipan has already stolen the casmir and bond no 9 as well as Arabian Oils Groob (which she loves as much for the bottle as the sweet scent of the oil)

    • 1932 is my favourite from this line but I still haven’t bought a bottle. Meanwhile it got only more expensive. That’s what you get for hesitating…

      • I kind of regret that I did not buy no 22 back when they first released it as an exclusive…but the fact that I had bought it so cheaply maybe five years earlier made me angry that they were releasing it as an exclusive for three times the price so I boycotted the brand…ah well! Live and learn…plenty of other beauties to love, right?

      • So I did some research and the Exclusifs (all ten) were released in 2007..according to the NYTimes 800 new fragrances were released that year…and the cost was $175 for 200ml…boy, was that a bargain in terms of price per ml.

  19. And another sleepless night. A liberal dousing of Pour Un Homme and a bit of reading here to pass the time. I finished up testing the St. Clair Scents line with Frost the other night. It was in the same vein as Gardener’s Glove. To my nose, lovely florals overlaid with a rawish leather. The florals this time around did not smell as fresh or vibrant. Without a doubt First Cut was my favorite, although Gardener’s Glove gave it a good run for the money. I’m still quite certain that a bottle of First Cut will be joining my collection. For evenings with Pierre, perhaps, à la Marzipan.

  21. I thought I’d do another “theme” week. This week I’ll wear fragrances I found for cheap in op shops and flea markets.

    Monday I wore Chanel Allure Homme Sport Cologne. This is a nice citrusy number, perfect for summer. Today I wore Hermès Equipage. This is the vintage bottle with a knobbly cap with marbled markings. It’s a pretty good woody scent but the oakmoss does take over early on. Very good longevity; it lasted at least 12 hours on me.

  22. Following Diana’s lead yesterday re vintage, today I’m in Organza. It’s vintage according to Portia’s rules! 1998. Nearly at the end of this bottle. I don’t know what the current juice is like.

  26. Since it got so cold I’m hiding in my apartment the whole day. Wearing Fragonard’s Santal to keep me warm. In the afternoon I did yoga with youtube, took a shower and now I smell of L’Occitane’s peeling Verveine Agrumes, verbena and citrus. That’ll be my SOT evening. Off to read my book…

  28. Finally home after being snarled-up in traffic and careening around greasy roads for the better part of the day. Was late for two client appointments but both were very understanding.
    In Jardin Sur Le Nil. Go away winter! Ten cms of snow tomorrow on top of the 5 we had today. Thursday’s day time temperature will be -21C. This will be my last weather report until we get an awe-inspiring 25cm dump of blowing snow. For now, winter DOES NOT EXIST!

  29. Today’s op shop find is Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme Concentrated Cologne. I am a bit of a fan of VC&A PH; it’s a very good leather at the price. When I saw two pristine 25ml boxes of it in an op shop I bought them right away, without looking closely. It was only when I got home that realised they were actually a very rare flanker. With a bit of digging I was able to date one box to 1986, so I’m assuming they are both of that era. CC is not actually cologne, but an EdT with the base notes ramped up. So if you like the leather aspect of the regular fragrance this one is right down your alley.

  35. Le Parfum de Thérèse. I gave this a cursory sniff first go round and quickly dismissed it on account of the opening cantaloupe note. Like most Malle’s have played out, the second time’s the charm. There’s something vaguely Diorella-ish about it. I wore Diorella with fervour in the 70’s, and now I’m on the hunt for yet another vintage.

  36. Some mid-eighties Miss Dior EDT yesterday, with some late 60s No5 parfum in the evening. I have a wee non-spray bottle, so wore a dab or two in honour of CQ and Portia.

    Knize Ten today, and may need to top that up soon to give myself the oomph to go back out into the cold and dark and wet to go and train this evening…

Wore Mitsouko the whole day (I’m still trying to decide if I should let go of a bottle, and which one if any), and now, inspired by Crikey, I’ve put some L’Heure bleue edt (recent reformulation) on. Yeah, it’s not what it used to be but it’s still got that Guerlain DNA. Jacques G. was a genius.

    • Hi Greg, it’s the old Gucci pour Homme that I remember my friends wore in the eighties. It’s a rather typical representative of the male perfumes back then and it’s good 🙂 Wish I could smell it again…enjoy it!

  42. Today I’ve pulled out Cuir Cuba Parfums de Nicolai. It smells like wet tobacco leaves and licorice. Just right for the cool humid weather. Patricia de Nicolai is a great perfumer IMO.

  44. Happy Thanksgiving to those APJers who live in the States.

    I am forever grateful for the perfume chatter, friendship and belly laughs always experienced on APJ…thanks to Portia and all you lovely folks for making that happen… I think in 50 years time if this site is still up and readable those reading it will get a kick out of all of our conversations, right?

    wearing eau de turkey today…it will be a quiet day cooking in my bathrobe…no entertaining and very very low key which is exactly the way I like it.

    I will think on my fragrance choice…maybe Jo Malone Ginger Biscuit or Dame Black Flower Mexican Vanilla…either of the two would go great with food. Or maybe Solstice Scent Estate Vetiver which is all about cocoaed patchouli and bourbon vanilla on my skin…yeah, I think I will go with that one as I had been thinking about it last night.

  45. Well hello all…. it has taken me TWO HOURS to read this entire forum. I’m glad that the Christmas cards are arriving safely. I had a great 2 nights and 3 days at my caravan. It wasn’t quite warm enough to go swimming, but was lovely to be wearing tee shirts. We arrived home on Wednesday night to Ballarat, which was cold and windy. Today Thursday it was hailing, and felt like winter again…. in fact my Central Heater is back on.
    Fragrances I’ve worn throughout the week include, Vanille Gallant, Issara, Samsara, THUNKED samples of Penhaligon’s Dorothea, and Yasmine and I bought one of the Klein’s rollerballs, but at the moment I cannot remember the name!!! I counted all my samples/decants which were sitting around my computer today…..76!!!. I’m off to bed soon and will drain the last ml of my SDV

  46. Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating today. Is Mrs. Marzipan the only American? Speak up if we have any others.
    Wearing Jardin Sur Le Toit (and yeah, I’m totally juvenile and still pronouncing it Jardin Sur Le Twat 🙄). Off to the hospital this morning for a couple of routine screenings (boobs and bones) then a proper, long overdue glam-up with my hair dresser. Blonde highlights go in at this time of year. My natural colour is a medium blonde, but tends to darken in winter (much like my mood) and I want to be looking all sparkly and gay for Mr. and Mrs. ‘and-a-home-in-St. Martins’ cocktail party this evening.
    And Mrs. Marzipan! A reminder to line up the mini’s for their Secretions Magnifique’s hose-down.

  47. SOTN- ADP BM Mirto di Panarea & some Cambodian OUD oil. My mood lifted immediately. The ADP opening is so strong. It’s like a lemon blast on your face. On top the basil leaf gives another direction. Almost feels like neroli plant and flower.
    The oud oil is a bit skanky and oudy.
    The freshness of the lemon and the darkness of the OUD are very well balanced under a windy full moon.

  48. Everlasting, from Christophe L’s Zoo. oh, WOW. Narcissus-laden resin-amber chypre concoction. Another one to wear a few times to get my head around–and probably try in greater and lesser amounts to understand more about how it unfolds. But, yes. (This sample pack was a damn good buy, especially given the size of the samples. I’ve not yet found one I don’t want to wear multiple times.)

    Evening: breaking out the box of eels extrait. Because I can. I have a hot date with my research notes, after all.

  49. Dark Rum, Malin+Goetz for me. Big day playing catch up in office so went for something I don’t know much about nor have worn before! Bit risky. Initial notes fruity, reviews say plum. Cream. And something a little sharp. It’s a bit smooth right now so will see later if the woody, spicy notes come out.

      • Jyotsna, I prefer earing orientals in summer, with a few exceptions, of course. If I wore Elephant now, I’d feel as if an actual elephant stomped on me 🙂

  51. Winter has come back… it is 8C but feels like 2,5C because it is also windy and wet. Off to work this arvo, but I haven’t quite decided which scent to wear yet. Wishing the Americans in the group a Happy Thanksgiving. Neva, I did quite like the Dorothea however I made a silly mistake and only purchased 1ml samples in the dabbers. Next year I shall order the same scents again in 3ml sprays.

  58. Predictably posh cocktail party last night. No Prosecco. Proper champagne for these folks. Oh! And the most stunning floral arrangements. It was like walking into a greenhouse. I was going to wear my go-to ‘you best be taking me serious’ perfume, Chanel No. 19, but at the last minute, decided eff it, and wore Carnal Flower.
    This morning, it’s Fracas. I remembered it immediately. I must have tried it in my 20’s. Still not a fan. Love the ‘in your face’ of it, but I’m getting nothing but a rather stuffy gardenia. Where’s the green? Or anything else to give it lift off.
    A couple of very good contacts last night. I smell some work coming my way 🐽

  59. Feeling poorly again, so off work again for two days. Together with a co-worker I have an important deadline on Monday afternoon, before an equally important meeting on Tuesday. So, hoping the last of migraine and an upset tummy will be gone by Saturday morning, so I can finally put in some serious work during the weekend. Cutbacks at work lead to no staff with extra time on their hands and a possibility to step in and give a helping hand.

    No pefume today, but Tauer’s perfumed body oil, so lots of amber!

    Also have to report the safe arrival of Saffy’s Christmas card. The first Christmas card to arrive this year, and it is very decorative. No glitter, so I think Saffy must have paid attention to what I said about interior design, the card has a simple, cosy design with attention to detail and it looks great on display.So thank you so much Saffy for good wishes and a beautiful card!

  60. my parents came to visit today and we went to our usual place for brunch…they brought up all my favorite holiday goodies (Marcella you will know many of these)…speculatius, marzipan stollen, lebkuchen and gefulte hertzen zabitter…the only thing missing is my dark chocolate covered marzipan…but Aldi’s in NYC still does not have it in stock 😦

    • I am positively drooling!! I don’t suppose your parents would like a wee drive up to Montreal? And stollen……so good. My Mum used to make it. She was a fantastic, prolific baker. Loved it. Cooking? Not so much. Do you have Dutch? German? Belgian? heritage? How come you know of all these treats?
      And more importantly, have you instilled a love of these goodies in the mini M’s?
      I’ll be starting the traditional cookie baking this week. Mostly Austrian/Czechoslovakian recipes. But then I’ll switch countries and closer to Santa day will bake a traditional Dutch Krentenbrood.

      • Well, we used to think we had much Western and Northern European heritage until I did some DNA testing and boy were we surprised at what showed up-LOL! However, these were the treats that my parents grew up with so love of them has been passed down to me and now to my children who look forward to my parents bringing them up every year. They usually buy them from Aldi’s in NYC.

        Marcella, if your mom used to make homemade stollen I am beyond impressed…it must have been amazing. did she make it with marzipan? That is my all time favorite…I think I could eat marzipan paste straight out of the package 😉 And thank you kindly for the offer of authentic chocolate covered marzipan but the shipping from Canada is ridiculous and my parents are already on the hunt for some to get me for Christmas !!!!

  63. Today’s op shop find is Amouage Dia. I don’t normally where the Amouage women’s fragrances, but this one is quite a well-balanced floral that ins’t too overwhelming and girly. I guess that’s the woods and musk in the base notes.

  64. G’day, I’m back from my swanky time-travel party. OMG I can’t even begin to describe everything that went on. Jay surely knows how to throw a party! It’s an outstanding production in which the cast members play out events in the midst of the audience. The venue is set out as different rooms in Gatsby’s mansion. Some members of the audience are brought into the live action and directed to different areas to get different perspectives on the story. My own story is that I’m a wealthy property developer with oodles of cash to invest in some nefarious schemes😉. I may also be guilty of an offence after the fact. All the staff and most attendants were in costume, and the floor was fairly bouncing to the strains of the Charleston. The run has been extended until at least February so my hubby and daughter will be getting tickets in their Christmas stockings. I cannot wait to go again! Wonder which rooms I’ll get to see next time?
    Anyway, back to perfume. I’m in my gorgeous Cocoa Dreams today. I have an idea for layering with Stash for work later. This big idea was inspired by Tara on abottledrose.

  66. Tiger’s Nest from Portia’s Perfume Pressies. It’s wearing perfectly this morning.
    The sweeping saga of the gripping and suspenseful IKEA Bathroom Cabinet series is airing it’s last episode today. An outsider, a ‘guy’ has been hired to fix the cabinet to the wall. Marcella, the cranky but fiesty protagonist has lost faith in the amiable but bumbling Mr. Laurelhardy’s skills. The daughter, in whose apartment this series plays out, wonders why her wall looks like it was used as a target in a shooting gallery. She wonders if she should call in the police. Roll credits.

  67. I have scored some sweet almond oil and apricot kernel oil at 25% off the normal price today. Sadly, I’m not sure it’s food grade quality, but from a reliable supplier at least. Did not buy any EO this time around, but saw essential oil made from Siam benzoin gum. Would that be good on its own just mixed with a carrier oil, I wonder? Or should I look for other woody notes as well?

  70. Galop this morning (thank you Hermes for your large samples, but now I have to quell the craving for me. Though… not at non-duty free prices for sure.)

    Rozy this evening, for pottering about in town trying on things I don’t need, and getting a bit magpied by all the shiny things in the windows (ooh! sequins!) when I *really* don’t need any glam party frocks. I may, however, have acquired a replacement bottle of L’Heure Bleue at a decent discount (17% ain’t nothing). The Guerlain lady decided I smelled very nice, so gave me a bunch of samples too.

  71. My last op shop find for the week was the first perfume I found in an op shop: Dior Jules. It was on the counter next to Chanel Pour Monsieur and Antaeus. I snagged the first two but, in a classic newbie mistake, I left the Antaeus behind.

  74. I smelled magnificent going to bed last night. Early evening bath followed by a generous basting with Nubian Heritage Raw Shea Butter with Frankincense and Myrrh and vintage Shalimar perfume. Then a couple of spritzes of Tiger’s Nest just before diving under the duvet. Bliss.

  77. SOTVeryEarlyM- Dior Granville. Surprised I hadn’t tried this before. Bright, fresh opening. Seemed appropriate for the up omping sunny day.
    But then, poof! It vanished! Gone! I only dabbed so might pour on some more juice the next.

    Amped up with with Resina by Oliver & Co. Love the oh-so-resinous star anise.
